    Sinner had chances to win both the 1st, 2nd set and threw absolute bombs at Nadal. He was also able to counter the insistent Rafa forehand attack on his backhand.

    man, people talk about nadal's break back percentage (the percentage of the time he immediately breaks back after being broken) and that was on full display tonight. For most players, the lapse in focus or surge in the opponent's level means the loss of a set. Nadal could have easily lost the first two sets if he was like those other players.

    People underestimate how good Rafa is at the net & he has incredible hands to go alone with his punishing brute force ground stokes to finish big points. Combine Rafa's Massive. top spin forehand to expand a clay court, & then precision drop shots to shrink it. It's unbeatable.
    That is the secret of his greatness. Using the entire geometry of the court with perfectly executed machine like skilled shots point in & point out.
    There is no other player who has done this as consistently as Rafa has done. That is why he owns 12 French open titles & is threatening for #13.
    Only Novak Djokovic is consistent & skilled enough to absorb Rafa's power & has the technical skills to disrupt Rafa's patterns, especially if he executes the down the line back hand from a Rafa's top spin short forehand cross court.

      @qgodofgodsrulerofall1341 3 года назад

      @@michelez715 You are right, a higher first serve % will definitely help but Rafa is best at winning 2nd serve points on the tour, especially on clay. Historically Rafa has improved his 1st serve % for the semis and final in slams. He knows to defeat the Rogers & Novaks he has to. Against lower ranked or inexperienced players he can get away with it. Against the best he cannot.

    Rafa escaped from a sticky situation here. Sinner served for the first set, and had he taken it, Sinner's motivation and Rafa's doubts would have increased. But the young man failed at the crucial moment, and it was game over. If you want to beat Rafa Nadal on clay at the french, you need to win the first set. That's step number one. If not, the mental weight of turning the score around against Rafa on the Chatrier is going to crush you. I hope we see a competitive match against Diego.

    Can never get over just how hard Sinner smacks the ball, sounds like a bazooka when the ball leaves his racquet

    I thought Sinner would win a set but it seems he hasnt comfortably learned how to consistently rip his BH down the line, even though his cross court is easily top 10. If he learns a Djokovic-like BH down the line he will be unstoppable.

    Sinner played well, even though he lost in straight sets! He would have had a better chance on a hard court!

      Yes. Going forward Sinner is going be a tough out for Rafa on any other surface but especially on a hard court where his power with pay greater dividends.

    Jannik Sinner was very impressive to me, first time I saw him playing. Lots of easy power, creative and great reading of the game for his age.

    These highlights are so short you’d think it went in straights... 👀
    Still a great match from the young gun, he’s got a bright future if he continues like this.
