Elvis himself said Roy had the best singing voice he had ever heard
Roy Orbison was in a league all his own! What an incredible voice! Thank you, again, TMS team! Your efforts are so greatly appreciated!
Didn't Elvis claim Roy was the GOAT. Awesome seeing this and knowing it's actually a live performance
Elvis was a fan of Roy. Roy was a fan of Elvis
Benjamin Orr-the late great bassist of the Cars band said Roy Orbison was his favorite musician and the only “autograph” he’s asked for. He cherished it & Roy, he obviously had great taste!
Roy had many tragedies in his life. Such a great talent!
Greatest voice in rock and roll.
That growl.... Mercy! 😄
The audience is into it!
Happy Thursday... thank you for sharing! 💖
-cheers !-
I was thinking the same thing about the crowd. Towards the beginning when the camera cuts to the audience, the first five rows are dancing, and you can tell they’re really into it.
He had a great growl! 😸
@StephanieJeanne Tops! Makes laugh every time! Have a wonderful and peaceful day! 🕊 💖
@@Oklahoma-Dreaming 👌
One of the best of the originals of all time. So many that came after looked up to him. Roy is great 😊
Best voice ever.
An American Classic!
The secret to this song is having a drummer that can get up in the audience's face for 3 plus minutes. It helps to have Roy Orbison as the singer too.
Some mean sideburns there Mr. Orbinson !
I’m only a minor Roy Orbison fan. But whenever I hear him or see him I immediately think of the film “Blue Velvet” (BV). I’ve watched it several times over the years and I actually like it more each time I see it, even though my “hero” Roger Ebert really panned it. I think that Roger might change his mind a bit today. But that scene where David Lynch had that background music - “In Dreams” maybe? - and the scene where one guy says, “Here’s to your f-k, Frank” then has dancers on top of the car? I tell you BV is very good but is like one very bad drug trip. (I’ve never really used drugs - I do like a beer or two - but I’m guessing that movie is supposed to feel like an acid trip.)
What a f*cking LEGEND!!! He looked a bit strange with his haircut and thick glasses. But NO ONE can sing like Mr. Orbison!!
Another great musician showcased on The Midnight Special
The original and the best version.
Great singer great song. They don't build them like this anymore. Thank you for preserving these memories, TMS!
What a treat to wake up to.
Great song by Roy! He sounded terrific here, as usual! I love Van Halen's version, too! 😎💜
What a talent l. I am still a fan, and always will be.
LOVE Roy Orbison!! What a SONG!! 👏 👏 👏 to that cool drum beat.
When I was a freshman in ‘78 @ OKLA State University 🇺🇸, there was a traveling circuit band named “Vince Vance & the Valiants” based in New Orleans, LA. This was one of their signature songs, anyone else ever hear of them?? They wore zany costumes but were such talented musicians. The guy dressed in all black leather with only his eyes/chest showing, tried to get me to “visit” his trailer behind the bar after the show, we were talking in between sets, and no, I didn’t…it was kinda shocking for lil’ ole innocent me, haha.
Thank you TMS!
I think Vince Vance and the Variants played the NCO Club here at Barksdale AFB in the early 80s, I missed them, but a friend told me they were crazy 😂. All the musician wanted was to pet a Kitty, 😂.
@@robmatlock7675 I’m telling you they were “something” to behold, very very talented musicians who had the whole place Jumpin’! One of them dressed just like a McDonald’s French Fry Cook, look for pics of them online & you’ll see the black hooded “Zorro” guy. I saw them again in Tulsa @ a live rock n’ roll venue called “Whiskers”…haha 🐈⬛, it’s where all the traveling bands played in Tulsa to get their “feet wet” before making the big time, or not. Nathan Hale HS had a great band of grads named “Counterpoint” who sounded just like Kansas-band, Jeff Kouns graduated with me & was their keyboard player. The clubs owner Gary Bentley arranged to have a local motorcycle gang-The Rogues I think, drive their motorcycles in through the front door of the venue & drop off each band member at the front stage. I’d never seen anything like it before or since. A friend that I was with said “let’s get outta here” after awhile as one of the biker dudes was hot on her trail, he scared her. She was a beautiful full blood Creek/Choctaw Native American. 🎶 Blast!💥💥💥from the Past! 🎶
awesome!
I think I saw a Frank Zappa in the audience or maybe Croce!😁
la mejor voz del rock
Roy Orbison's pale blue pant suit was auctioned in 1993. It smelled like farts and salisbury steak, but fetched a whopping price.
1:29 2:23 Give the drummer some!!!
This is GREAT😃👍🏻ROCK ON!!!!!!!!🤘🏻🤙🏻✌🏻
Awesome!!
Thanks Burt!
🙏🤗🍺cheers
I was 14 then and loved this show, all I thought about was girls and music.
hell yeah roy was here follow the maker of soulful rock and roll thank you tod infinity
My parents loved Roy, had a couple of his 45s. For me, shows like the Midnight Special were the only place you could here him at the time. The early 70s were before Oldies Radio was a thing, except a show KAKC had an Saturday morning. Roy definitely was the prototype for many rock acts to follow.
We used to see him play all over West Texas in the 70's. He played in the bars for the oilfield hands, they were pretty rough crowds, but everyone settled down when Roy would start.
The king of COOL
💜
What a voice. He will always be missed. He seems to look old in this.
I think this live version sounds better than the original record!
🎶🪄🌟💃🏼🎶✌🏻😎
Roy Orbison was a great singer and an incredible songwriter, and by all accounts was a truly lovely human being. There are few performers who are so widely respected and beloved by audiences and musicians alike. But what a lot of people don't realise about Roy is that he had a truly tragic haircut.
More Pretty Things. Silk Torpedo era, my fave.
He kilt that rite thar.
Lefty Wilbury!
I saw Roy and Joe Pesci perform Pretty Woman together on the Midnight Special, with both playing Fender Starts and wearing sunglasses....it was wild. But, there is no record of it that I can find. At first Copilot AI on my PC denied they performed together but after I stated I saw them, it did admit they were together on Midnight Special. However I can not find that show.
Awesome!
Even more so if the cheesy fake applause was edited out.
Who told the drummer to add those fills? They're unnecessary. Other than that, great version.
What do you get if you take Elvis but make his music actually interesting? Roy Orbison of course.
LMBO!
How can you stand there and not move a muscle and still captive the audience?
A God
We’re all here for 0:56, right?
I'm guessing that Mr. Orbison was influenced somewhat by The Beatles when he wrote this song about his wife.

LOL. I love the Elvis Presley baby-blue jump suit. The Van Halen version is better but this is ok.
he looks like a serial killer
who can sing well
Roy Orbison created it. Van Halen perfected it.
I have played both versions with local cover bands, and I still can not get that awesome whammy bar dive bomb out of my head when I hear this song!😊
-julia roberts ... !-
@@sunnystormy4973I ❤️ that movie with Richard Gere, so romantic, Julia was drop dead gorgeous. Loved the clothes she wore/bought on her spending sprees.
Number one in the fall of 1964 for Roy Orbison and number twelve for Van Halen in the spring of 1982.
HA HA the only thing they perfected was how to ruin a great song, this and You Really Got Me
Respect but Van Halen’s version was way better 🎉
