Right! Many years ago, in my late teens, he played a show where I lived. He was quite old, but no Oldie. So glad I went (alone!) to see him. Was like seeing a virtuoso. Epic.
Roy's one and only appearance, and the only song he ever performed on the Sullivan show. Although this is a great song, I think it's a shame he never performed any of his legendary ballads on the show which were his unique signature. I wonder if Ed never heard them because I feel a great opportunity was missed. Roy should have been a frequent guest, as one of the greatest singers of his and any other time.
I’m pretty sure they made The Mamas and The Papas lip sync California Dreamin. One of the girls is eating a banana and I think she used it as the microphone at one point.
I still have my 45 of this Monument masterpiece I bought in Chicago in 1964, one thing many people don't know the B side has a beautiful melody " Yo te amo Maria ", that is never played on the radio.
The Sun Records artists made music that is so good. Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Roy Orbison influenced so many artists from the rock and roll and country music genres. An outstanding performance here of Oh Pretty Woman. May Roy Orbison rest in peace. Cheers! ✌️
And you can see Jerry Kennedy a young 24 year old playing his 1961 Gibson ES 335. He is the one who came up with the very catchy guitar riff. He went to play on hundreds of hits in Nashville from Elvis to Reba McEntire as a session studio musician.
The movie" Pretty Woman" brought me here. 👧 Starring: Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. Always Loved this song, but loved the movie just as much! He always amazed me! You can never use your handicap as an excuse. You can be and do anything you want in life. Thank you for sharing! 💖

The Great Late Roy Orbison!!! The Big O!!! Gone but never forgotten! Thank you for posting this terrific video from one of the all time kings of rock and roll! Greetings from Mexico!
Yesterday, December 7th, has been 33 years since he died. Heard about it on the radio in my dad's truck, because my sister and I missed the school bus. It was a shock. It was also a very sad day for my mom who was one of his biggest fans.

I have it, too, along with 500 or 600 other 45's, mostly from the 1960's. Years ago, I put them on audio tapes...it took 18 of them, but such great music!
Was just going to mention the same thing though I am almost positive when the shows were repeated a few years back on TVLand, or whatever channel it was, this clip was from videotape. The sound was so much cleaner and crisper.
@@jthyme7940 I noticed that too. Maybe they lost the master tape. Someone made a comment awhile back saying there was a fire or something, and a bunch of the master tapes were lost. I remember this Roy clip being in a "Best of" Sullivan special in much better quality too.
Apparently, this was an issue with the 60's daytime series DARK SHADOWS. Some of the master tapes have been lost to time, with a number of episodes left on kinescope. This, despite most of the series being preserved on both B&W and Color videotape.
Lucky enough to see Roy twice in person. No one better and truer to the sound of his records than Roy. Couple of observations. Can anyone provide any details on the guys backing him in the clip? Are they the same guys on the record because they too are damn good! And that's a mess of cables on the floor during the performance. Never seen anything like that on the Sullivan show
I've gotta agree. I saw Roy at an outdoor venue just five months before his untimely death in 1988. The man was mesmerizing, and yes, incredibly true to his recordings. Still one of the best -- if not _the_ best -- live shows I've ever attended.
@@michaeltuz608 I wanted to see him play in NH, about the time you speak of. I didn’t, but thought I would have another opportunity. ☹️ I was devastated when I heard the world, had lost him.
@@buckjohnson1119 I just remembered that I've still got the ticket stub from that show; it was July 30, 1988. I found out about the show that morning ... read about it in the local newspaper, and called the Ives Center in hopes that I could get a ticket at the last minute. Luckily, I did. I was so blown away that I left the venue that night thinking, "Man, I can't wait to see him again!" Who knew..?

And to think..he was too sharp behind those sunglasses but according to his bio, he actually wore them because he had stage fright!! Love this song by him! The best is phenomenal!
I heard that he accidentally left his regular glasses on the tour bus and had to go on stage with his prescription sunglasses. They were a hit so he just kept doing it.
@@leerunning4666 that is exactly correct; "stage-fright" had nothing to do with it; by the time he adopted the dark Raybans, he had been performing, "on-stage", for over a decade....

Elvis once said Roy had the best voice in rock and roll. I have to agree.
You couldn't get better kudos than from "The King!"
Elvis wasn't the only one who said so. Ron
His guitar skills are really overlooked! Not many people were performing and singing at the same time at his level in the 60s!

I knew Bill Dees. He wrote this and sings the high harmony.
How great that Ed had his guests perform live, and not lip sync! I was 9 and remember this well.
It adds to Sullivan's sterling reputation. I really thank the SOFA folks for releasing their archives. They have given us a gold mine.
