- Is there a such thing as a miracle cure for the plagued plastic thermostat housing for these 4.0 Rangers or Explorers? I'm going to install an aluminum one on my ole pickup truck, and hope to find out!
Come watch me struggle my way through this in my second youtube video, now with editing!

At least you did not have to take intake manifold off! Good job thanks for sharing! Amazon has plug in sensors.
I installed longer bolts down through the housing and put nuts on the bottom. This keeps the seams from separating, has worked so far.
did the same thing wen they told me it was 250 dollars to fix it. my ass more like 2.50 🤣
I just attempted this and sadly had to remove the intake manifold due to a cross-threaded & sheared bolt when trying to mount the housing. For $1.40 at the scrapyard I got all the bolts needed. An extractor from Peavy Mart and a centre punch got the old one out. Much easier with the intake out, but I'm glad you and so many others were able to leave it on instead.
Love real time videos like this, thanks for sharing.
K&N filter, 1 of the first jobs I did on my MX5, in fact the only job, my mechanic does the rest. Lol Great video again. 👍👍
Great video. Great editing and great music. Great job
Thanks man. I'm really running low on musical options, so for future videos if I can't find any different music I'm going to have my friend just play guitar for me lol
Good Job Jesse.
I am about to install the very same aluminum thermostat housing on my 01 Ranger 4 L. I'm so glad I watched your video first it made me aware of the problem with the sensors. Where were you able to get more screw in sensors I would like to get some I will need them as well
My 2011 ranger was a one temp sensor housing. The cast aluminum thermostat housing I got was the same install as OEM with OEM gaskets and sensor clips
Yeah Ford changed so much constantly. I never understood why they went with a 2 sensor housing when they both report the same thing but to two different places. Seems like something they could have split off later, which, sounds like they did
@@JestersGarage it definitely makes it easier to change the driverside timing chain tensioner not having a sensor and a sender. I had an issue with a new sensor having an o-ring that was a bit too large to fit in the port.
Lol I just noticed, but I use the airbox for tool and fastener storage too!
do you have a source for this part?
One sensor is for the computer and the other is for the gauge in the cluster.
I saw another video of the aluminum replacement with the clip in sensors for the Ranger.
I solved your problem with the sending units for the aluminum thermostat housing.
Hey, how are you? How did that workout for you? I’m still trying to find the right sensor for the aluminum housing replacement . Does anyone know? The part # for a screw in for the 2001 4.0L engine? The thanks.
Should of replace your timing chain tensioner when you have the thermostat off. So easy now I have to remove it again to put it in. 😟
Where in the world did you find the aluminum housing with screw in sensors?
Great video, I forgot to mark which wire goes to which sensor, plugs and sensors plugged in either way but noticed sensors had different part number on them so will see when I run it, may have to switch my wires. 2004 Ranger but only has 70K miles and never had leak at thermostat housing but was doing timing chain tensioner and got it mostly bank together today, have to add fluid and run tomorrow 9/4/21. We will see
Great video! Thanks. I bought the same unit but without the thermostat. I'm waiting till the weather changes in my unheated garage (-25c)
to finish the install. I guess I'll be using my wife's hair dryer to heat up the parts tomorrow. Ha!. I was wondering if you still recall the actual thermostat part number of the thermostat? If it has the emergency pressure bypass hole drilled into the flange, and if the hole is necessary at all?. Some have them, some don't. If you have the radiator cap part number and specs that you feel works well with your thermostat, that would be great?
So two years later how has the aluminum housing held up? This is my third time replacing it and I'm looking for "the Catch". The first time I replaced it all three bolts broke off in the block. The Ford dealership charged me $45 for those three bolts. I want this to be the last time I replace it.
My 2000 Explorer has stock screw in sensors, clip in came later.
i just got my aluminum housing for my 2003 Ranger 4.0L and am hesitant to put it in without a few days to play with lol
my sensors are the clip in style! i was wondering if you could put the connections on the sensors while you were putting in the housing and save your hands?
Also curious as to if you could put the top hose on before bolting the housing in, i will have to try that
i bought that same thermostat housing last year, the inlet and outlet hoses ruptured and as i was takin the housing out to replace the hoses, I notice the sealer on the inlet port where the small hose goes, had eroded some and i was able to spin the port. im thinking putting rtv sealer on it and see if it holds up. the housing itself is pretty good, it’ll outlast the hoses ik that much. lmk your thoughts
Can you post a link on where you got the thermostat housing !?
I got it on ebay.... one sec....

Make sure ya get a replacement sensor for the incorrect one! It sucks doing it in the truck!! I haven't even done it yet myself!
I’m about to replace my housing with that same one you used there I also ordered mine from e-bay. I heard that the senders needs replaced before doing the installation. The senders are different ranges. I’m looking for the screw in replacements. Did your research and replace yours yet? And can you help me with any part # of senders for a 2001 Ranger? Thanks great video.
I did a little bit of guess work. Then bought a sensor. However I recently broke my leg so I have not been back out to the garage since
@@JestersGarage I just got back from the Ford dealership and spoke to there parts dept. that didn’t help me very much. Having them look up a replacement that would screw into this aftermarket part. Shaking my head! Hopefully your leg gets better soon. Take care and thanks for your help
@@dericktrx7573 did you ever figure out what sensors you needed? I've got an 01 ranger. replaced the housing with the aluminum one. I also had to grind down the throttle body to fit the top hose. My sensors didn't need modifications. But my CPU threw a temp sensor code. I'm headed to O'Riley's today to buy some screw in sensors that supposedly match my year, make, model. Any help would be appreciated.
@@neverstopexploreon Good luck! My friend. I worked as a technician at a Ford dealership. I tried to find the right replacement sensors for the Aluminum housing part . There isn’t any. That will work! All screw in types are for the explorer and will not work on the 4.0 L ranger without setting a sensor code. Check engine light. Also your temperature gauge will be off. The engine will not run properly. PCM will think the engine isn’t at operating temperature. So I never used it. I ordered replacement from Ford. A aftermarket. Part will not work without giving you a code. But good luck 🍀.
I read your comment on Justin's garage I have the same Ranger and 0-1 with a 4 L and I'm about to install the aluminum thermostat housing and I watched the video good thing I did didn't know about the sensor problem. I also have screw-in sensors where you able to locate any and where did you get them if so
Well if you're on your 3rd thermostat housing change you must have been the one that put the hose clamp on before the intake lol
That was actually a friend of mine. We put an engine in it at 382,xxx miles. I had to go back to work, he was off work, and he finished it up for me, but I didn't wanna outright blame him for it in my video. I had talked about it a little bit but I edited it out.
Hey bud did you ever find the right sensor? Nice video too, Im on my 3rd housing about to buy the aluminum one myself.
Hey there, I think so, but I haven't replaced it yet. I shuffled cars around in the driveway to work on my Mustang but everything including the weather has been finding a way to impede my progress! I've also not had a lot of free weekends. I'm overdue on releasing a vid too.
@@JestersGarage hi can you send a link to where you bought the right sensor?
@@chadcaravaggio5701 when I can make it back out to the garage.... I recently broke my leg.
6/11/22 This problem has rose with my 2004 4.0L Ranger looks damp where he seen the fluid and oil in video behind housing. Going to go with aluminum based by reviews the plastics seems to leak at the seam.
nice video you could loose the music
I just replaced my thermostat housing on my Explorer three years ago with a Dorman plastic version and unfortunately it seems to be leaking already around the seams you pointed out. How is the aluminium housing so far?
Well honestly I haven't driven it yet because a short time ago I broke my leg. So I've been staying inside. I intended to swap out that incorrect sensor.. and drive it a whole lot more but it didn't work out that way. Lol. But hopefully soon!
@@JestersGarage that's a bummer to hear about your leg. Hopefully you'll be up and running soon!
I got one for the same engine in my explorer. But I shook it and I hear something, is that normal?
If you haven't taken it apart, the thermostat is still in it, and I bet what you're hearing his the bleed bypass on the thermostat jiggling
Where do I find that aluminum thermostat housing?
I got mine off of ebay. I'm hoping to be well enough soon to make a follow up vid
can get them on AMAZON as well!
What is a "maracle?"
In this case..... a thermostat housing that doesn't crack and leak like the rest of em.
@@JestersGarage whoosh
Would you please explain again what one needs to do with the sensors if you install the aluminum thermostat housing. Thank you and well done.>@@HylianOverlord
Those 4.0 are junk imo. The overhead cam ones anyways.
Notorious for the rear timing chain guides snapping. Ask me how I know lol
Same here. I just put an engine in it last year. It finally let go at 283,000 miles. I've had it since 59k. Regular oil changes and Lucas got me this far.
🍀☘️⭐🌟⭐🌟🌟👍
Ford used ass backwards engineering and makes things more difficult than necessary as apparent on this video.
The 4.0 was a German sourced engine. Hence the complexity.
plus this stuff was made to run about 100k miles and break, hence ALL the plastic shit
