    Writing banter without chemistry just leads you to the awkward situation where you have a room full of characters and none of them seem to like each other.

      The way I see it, chemistry is when putting two characters together gives those characters a chance to a. Grow or b. Reveal something about themselves
      Again, it's a broad topic, but I'll use your example.
      Awkward banter would be marvel style humor. We are both firing off witty one liners and insults just because.
      Engaging banter will reveal or stretch a character.
      Character A pokes at the other. He does so with a quirked brow and faint smirk. He's usually a straight man, so it's REVEALED he actually does have a sense of humor, one that's brought out by character B. So its REVEALED character B intrigues him
      It's a good line, but character B doesn't even flinch. With a similarly quirked brow but flattened lips she cooly fires back. Her posture is completely relaxed, slightly turned away. It's REVEALED she smart and secure, just as prepared to "defend" herself, not as personally invested as he is, but still willing to engage
      Character A pauses. It's a good retort, he can't coast this interaction. He has to stretch and adapt to not "lose" this interaction, and to keep the attention of one who was more aloof than expected. There is challenge he must GROW into
      You probably felt chemistry even here with things just being boringly explained instead of demonstrated.
      Good chemistry (easier said than done, and with MANY ways to do it) with cause BOTH characters to be challenged and given OPPORTUNITY to grow BECAUSE of the presence of the other, not just exterior circumstance--taking or rejecting that opportunity are both valid stories
      And both characters will be given opportunity to REVEAL who they are, again, due to the other and not just circumstance--this person makes them so mad they speak from their heart in anger, or so comfortable they will slowly open up and reveal the truth gently, or they inspire each other in different ways to explore new facets of themselves or try new things.

      A good pairing requires similar substance, but different styles. It cannot be random, what the two characters have in common and where they differ: they need to be similar in their core, view on life, but different when it comes to acting about it. Different paths to the same objective. Which is also what makes them complementary.
      The power/wit struggle is part of the process of mutual recognition: they challenge eachother's facade to get to the common ground lying beneath; and back again, forcing the other to acknowledge a different approach to said common ground. So neither really backs out, hence the constant push and pull.
      Speaking of Deadpool and Wolverine,... I think it's not it. Sorry.
      They are polar opposites at their core, who coincidentally happen to be in the same predicament and react to it in very similar ways: they are superficially similar and substantially different, which is the worst combination in hell...
      They are both desperate for purpose and meaning, both get violent when frustrated, both do alcohol/drugs to deal with the past, both avoid talking about what's important...in a coherent scenario, they drag eachother down. As for how deep their difference runs... Wolverine has a strong moral compass, Deadpool doesn't even know of such a thing nor cares. The reason why Wolverine feels like shit is that he's being too hard on himself, he's basically in voluntary exile; Deadpool, au contraire, can't live up to the smallest expectation, but still expects too much from others and that's his problem.
      This is how they got written in this movie, at least. Nothing in common whatsoever, except for the nasty fashion of dealing with failure. This is why they cannot help eachother, this is why it doesn't feel right.

    I think you’ve sorely forgotten the best source of fictional chemistry. The comedic best friends where there is ZERO tension and they’re almost EXACTLY the same. This includes Troy and Abed, Bill and Ted, etc. Of course there are small differences but they’re often treated as a single conglomerate of a character

    • @ajerqureshi6411
      @ajerqureshi6411 Месяц назад +247

      That is true, and those relationships are so fun, but to say that Troy and Abed have zero tension is misleading. Some of Community's best moments come from when Abed and Troy's differences do pop up and cause problems, like the time they had a large pillow fight war because of disagreements on their pillow fort. With that said though, I think a key aspect of these conglomerate relationships is that while they may be the same to each other, they can still be different to other characters...much of the comedy in Community comes from how the others react to Troy and Abed's antics.

    A crucial thing is to sometimes allow the actors to adapt the script, change some of the language and actually feel some chemistry without being held at gunpoint by the script.
    Remember, writing good dialogue is very difficult but in essence its words on a paper and the way the words are said by the actors entire body not just their intonations and vocal ranges dictates how it comes across on camera.
    Characters can also have great chemistry without saying a single word. I'm still figuring out this kind of universal language that has no words because often times it can be just as impactful as good dialouge.

      @JhadeSagrav I've felt like it can happen for anyone, if you've got a clear idea of what these characters are like. For me, I have two characters that go on a parallel arc. One is a dragon that doesn't like humans and the other is a human that doesn't like dragons, and circumstances force them to become dragon and rider. The human comes around to it a little quicker and the dragon is more stubborn, but their relationship is very much that of two people who originally can't stand to be around each other, but as time goes on, they come to be friends, but still act like they don't like each other with antics similar to an older and younger sibling. And it's made for some fun moments with the more willing human trying to coax the stubborn dragon out of his shell, while the dragon's growing compassion for the human mostly comes across through him pretending to still be annoyed by his rider. Keeping their personalities mostly in line with their main trait (willingness to change for the human and stubbornness for the dragon) I think is what helps their dialogue write itself because then it's more clear what one's reaction to the other will generally be.

    I find largely most people fumble with writing or understanding chemistry because they think chemistry looks like characters being "a couple". There's so much emphasis placed on what they look like together that the writing forgets to consider them as individuals each bringing something unique to the interaction. I think the way you illustrated it as just energy moving between two separate entities is the right way to view it. It doesn't much matter what form beyond that the relationship of the characters takes, but if you stop considering them as two (or more) unique units and only see them as one relationship, then there's nowhere for the energy to flow.

    There’s something about two characters that utterly despise one another that just make you wanna ship them together. Half of it is that they’re deeply emotionally invested in the other (even if that emotional investment is that one wants to see the other bleed out slowly)
    Also the “similar but not the same” thing is why the lancer of a group is often shipped with the leader or a hero with the villain, They’re usually foils for each other.

    I think when it comes to character chemistry, it's not really a fundamental rule that it has to be opposites to get good chemistry. As mentioned in another comment, Troy and Abed from Community have amazing chemistry with each other, and personality wise they are pretty much identical in that they are both goofy nerds who consistently do nerdy things together. Now they do have tiny differences in how they interact with their nerdy stuff, but one main reason the chemistry works is how in-synch they are, almost like they are sharing two-brain cells. For me personally, I always enjoy the chemistry where two characters are wholesomely so much alike each other that it leads to fun interactions like snappy dialogue exchanges or in an action cartoon maybe sick combo moves.

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 28 дней назад +1

      With Troy and Abed, I think we forget how different their backgrounds are, because they're so in sync. But those opposite backgrounds provide the bedrock for why their friendship is so touching. So just basking in the childlike joy of their love for one another is a pleasure on its own, because we're always unconsciously present with how it nurtures what each character has always lacked on their own.

      I wouldn't say they hate each other. They just can't stand each other. Not the same. These are best friends, despite all their resentment. In fact, I think the resentment comes from that more than anything. Even when they stop talking for all those years, I don't think it's out of hate. It's the kind of resentment that comes from love.

    I had a feeling you'd showcase Jack Sparrow and Will Turner in some capacity.
    They bounce off one another so well because on paper, they really shouldn't get along.
    Their initial lack of respect for each other allowed them to speak more openly and bond in a way that's quite unusual.
    Jack has a quiet respect for his quartermaster Mr. Gibbs, but he really cares for Will.
    You'd never see Gibbs argue with Jack, but Will straight up handed Jack over to Davey Jones. Funny how that works.
    But then if you take Pirates 5, Jack never really warms to Henry, despite him giving Jack the same lip Will Turner did throughout the original trilogy.
    A lot of credit goes to the actors but there was also a level of playfulness to the writing between Jack and Will in the original trilogy.
    The dynamic between Jack and Henry in Pirates 5 was just bland. Henry had apathy for Jack, whereas Will would actually treat him like an equal despite their disagreements.

    Morty is definitively more emotionally intelligent than Rick, and they _do_ have scenes and episodes about that. He's much more in touch with the human element and his own emotions. Scenes like the famous "come watch TV" and the episode in which he turns into a manipulative genious as soon as he gets rid of his toxic insecurity suggest this. The reason Rick doesn't learn from him is because Rick refuses to learn from _anyone_ let alone Morty. That is also kind of the point of the dynamic.

    Something I love about Clarice and Hannibal is that it's almost... a power fantasy? Many of us have been in Clarice's position, especially if you're a woman: Men don't take you seriously, you're clever but not quite clever _enough_ ... yet. There's this constant background hum of humiliation. Then you meet someone who despite yourself, you want to impress, but you're always on the back foot because they're older, wiser, better- and then, for a moment, you get a victory. And they concede. You shouldn't crave it, but you do.

    One of the most underrated forms of chemistry is platonic chemistry, and with the way Jujutsu Kaisen blew up this year it’s a shame you missed out on talking about Gojo and Geto or Megumi and Nobara.
    Or even dreamwork’s The Wild Robot- the whole basis of that movie is the softer chemistry between the main character and her surroundings.

    • @lioness3146
      @lioness3146 26 дней назад +3

      @@gavo7911 idk I think that’s a very western approach to relationships.
      Here in the East, friendships are given a lot more importance and depth in media even down to the way our languages work.
      There isn’t any statement that’s connotes “just friends” in most eastern and Asian languages, like Japanese, and friendships are more often equivocated to soulmates rather than romantic love.
      The depth of Platonic love is something that is everywhere, of course, but it’s a lot more prominently portrayed and focused on in the east when compared to the west, especially male friendships.
      Plus (and this is just a personal thing) for me, the intentionality of the writer matters so the fact both Gojo and Geto are canonically straight just confirms what most of us already knew but it doesn’t take away from the relationship at all.
      In my opinion, and probably the opinion of most eastern people, it adds depth.

  • @PlagueOfGripes
    @PlagueOfGripes 24 дня назад

    I'd say the most general rule of chemistry is the most general rule of storytelling: everything is in service to evaluating and developing concepts. If stories are about a single question and the characters serve to illustrate the different viewpoints of that question, then chemistry stems from the character's ability to converse with the audience in illustrating and developing an idea. In the case of contrasts, you present two sides to one thought. With similar characters, it's a more magnified examination of which version is best. It really just comes down to how provoking the chemistry is to the audience's interest in the ideas at play.

    One other great example you didn’t mention is how quite often in Doctor Who the chemistry between The Doctor & the companion(s) can ultimately be what makes or breaks it (or at least in my personal opinion does anyway).
    So with the latest series for example if the 15th Doctor & Ruby’s chemistry wasn’t anywhere near as good as I personally thought it was (and no I don’t care if they got on almost “too well”), I wouldn’t have enjoyed it nearly half as much as I did, and when that actually is the case (like I personally found with 13 & her ‘fam’) it really takes away from the overall quality of the episodes (if there even was any to begin with of course) and leaves you feeling a bit cold.
    Not to mention as well it is lot of times a very similar dynamic to Sherlock & Watson’s like you said (particularly in the Steven Moffat era when he was pretty much writing both shows at the same time) in that The Doctor can sometimes have a real lack of humanity & show just how alien they truly are and it’s up to the companion to both metaphorically AND literally bring them back down to Earth in order to make them see things straight and from a better perspective

    (I emphasise “thematic” for a reason, as most authors these days hear “MOAR CONFLICT” and think it means more pointless b*tching and bickering between characters about trivial things. That, however, is in fact a k*ller of chemistry, since it makes all the characters involved come off as divas.)

    One of my favorite examples of great chemistry is Takumi and itsuki from Initial D. They are best friends and you can tell. They are polar opposite with one being exited and one not giving a crap about anything. They to tend to be annoyed by each other but they care about each other immensely and throughout the entire show, they were there for each other when it mattered most. One day itsuki bought what he the thought was an AE86 (which is baisically a Corolla) but was actually the inferior AE85. His friends made fun of him, except for Takumi, takumi consoled itsuki saying who cares, it's his own car. And then they went on a joyride in the 85 on the mountain, three street racers made fun of itsuki and his car and Takumi got pissed, and he proceeded to show everyone that the 85 is cool while also humbling thise jerks. Itsuki fell in love with his car that day and ever since then, he would improve as a driver with his 85. Another day Takumi lost his girlfriend, and his engine blew up in the middle of a race. He was distraught and the next day he blew up at itsuki. Itsuki didn't know about what happened and soon found out, and instead of watching a race he really wanted to say, he decides to take his car hang out with Takumi to show that he cares.
    Not to mention they bounce off of each other very well. If you want to see one the best and most realistic friendships in fiction, Initial D.
