Alfred might be the only person that you can say things like : "he is better than Batman", "he can beat Batman", etc etc etc without creating a fanwar.
Dude you forgot the most important revision of them all, that Alfred was once listed as a member of MI six. During his military service, allowing him to obtain the critical usefulness of being able to double as a field medic and Dr. of Batman.
Peculiar Pepsi Yeah but he cant exactly fix his own shattered bones if he's completely fucked up, there have been several cases where he's needed Alfred to help him because he can't.

Alfred is (in my opinion) just as important to the batman universe as robin and nightwing. But to find out that his original back story is pathetic was just sad
rebal180 I think I prefer him as a former military/soldier and actor before he became the Butler for the Waynes, it gives him interesting depth and backstory
I feel that Alfred is one fo the most noble and heart warming characters in the DC universe. He was tasked with raising a young boy on his own. He is a father figure to Bruce and the heart and soul of the character.
I think he's too out there. Every other word is a curse word or a disapproving shout. I prefer the proper Alfred, but we shall see where they take this.
I'm pretty sure that it was and is Alfred who helped Bruce not become a vengeful psychopath drunk on power and weatlh. He became his moral foundation after his parents were killed and was always there with support as well as criticism, scolding him like a parent would.
I've become a fan of Alfred not only because he's my favorite ally of Batman but also serves as a parental figure to Bruce Wayne when he's not fighting crime as Batman & always there to lend advice when Bruce is struggling through certain events
Believable, in one of the prelude/tie-in comics for Injustice 2, Alfred with ingesting one of Superman's resiliency pills beats Superman to a bloody unconscious knob!
I always wanted an Alfred origins story since I was little. It sounds weird, but when i was a kid I was always curious about Alfred even as a 6 year old. As I got older the more I learned of Alfred the more enjoyed Batman. Believe it or not *the Butler is my favorite part.*
I think they've actually fought once, and Alfred actually beat the living crap out of Supes. I'm not even kidding, I think it was from Injustice or something, look it up for yourself if you're interested.
in the Injustice storyline superman engineers these Super-pills that give the consumer God-like amount of strength so batman tries to steal one and scan it to replicate them, he succeeds but gets his back broken(again!) by superman then alfred comes along seeing batman on the floor as superman tortures him and takes the pill used for analyzing, and beats the crap out of Superman like no one ever has.
+Alfred Pennyworth: Sir, You can had out a choice assortment of bruises to the bad guys yourself and still remain a proper British Gentleman and you do it ever so politely! If I ever got into a ruddy fix and needed help in a fight, I would not mind having you at my back Sir. How are you with a sword?
I just love Alfred. His character has nothing for people to hate on actually, I mean he's old, he's nice, he's loyal, he's wise, he's also a doctor, and he's a good father figure who ready to sacrifice everything for his little boy so yeah... It's hard to hate on Alfred.

WatchMojo, you forgot mention that in his youth, his family were in a british circus. And no, I'm not mistaking his family for the Flying Graysons... P.S. I learned this from the Lego Batman videogame, I learned lot of the basics of stuff. But in Lego Star Wars, it took me a few years to realize the "No, I am your father" cutscene in the Cloud City level, I never understood what was with the picture he was holding, and I didn't really like playing the Mustafar level... Hell, I came to the consept that Anakin and Luke were probally brothers (same with Obi-wan "Ben" Kenobi). Closest to voice characters in that game were the death cries, and the battle droid saying "Roger, Roger!" or "Uh-oh." I'm haunted by the screech of R2-D2... * "REEEAAWOUU!!!!" * Really saddening hearing that little astromech droid squeal...
In my head canon, Batman universe was set in the early 90's, and Alfred was SAS during the end of WW2 and up to the mid 50's as a medic, then MI6 until up to early 60's, until he was employed by Wanye Enterprises to be a corporate intel officer for a short time until he retired as a butler right at Bruces birth. It was Alfred who ended up grooming Bruce to have his moral compass and investigative prowess.
I'm sure, if most of you have not drawn that line yet, that Jarvis Pennyworth, MIGHT be the inspiration for Tony Stark to refer to his AI butler as"Jarvis". Thing is Jarvis is a incredibly generic name for a butler, and with Jeeves. For Tony it is an acronym "Just A Rather Very Intelligent System". But this is a recent invention, even though Tony had referred to Jarvis many times long before then.
In the series Agent Carter that nearly came out, It have a REAL Jarvis working for Tony Stark dad which I guess he won't make it in some point of the series and then change into AI
SOS Sama Maybe Tony named the ai Jarvis in honor of his dad's butler. If he thinks hard enough I'm sure a genius like Tony could come up with an acronym to fit with the Jarvis name.
I love Alfred in Batman TAS* (The Animated Series) the most. It's just something about his slight cockyness along with being very friendly all around that makes him the best Alfred in my opinion.
I'm a huge fan of the two most recent iterations of Alfred (Michael Caine's Alfred from the Nolan trilogy, and Sean Pertwee's Alfred from the show "Gotham".) I love Michael Caine's emotional, gut-wrenching dialogue and how he truly feels like a second father to Bruce and Sean Pertwee's Alfred feels more fleshed out. He's not just some soft-spoken butler, he's a hardened war veteran, he's edgy and cynical, and he can fend for himself and protect Bruce if need be.
You left out a great piece of his past; that he was once an MI6 intelligence officer. It has been part of the canon for at least 20 years. It has been ewstablished in the animated series, comic books, and the latest movie trilogy.
An absolute essential part of the universe! A DC without Alfred is just a world that is found to be lacking - and quite simply a Batman without an Alfred would have been long dead.
For me, Alfred was the most amazing butler because he knew when to keep a secret, when shit was going down and when to save Batman's ass. He literally was the best at being there for Bruce, when his parents were gone, when the ones he loved died or when he really needed help. Bruce became Batman because of a Bat but it was Alfred that made him Bruce. Also to me, out of all the Alfred's played, Michael Gough was the best Alfred. He was like the Mr. Rogers of that universe.
I think my favorite version of Alfred is the one in “Batman & Robin” in 1997. It is here that we see that Alfred is the one that raised young Bruce after his Mum and Father were murdered and that rather then having a “Master and Servant” relationship, it is a “Father and Son” relationship that the two men enjoy. OH yes. Alfred is a Butler and he makes no bones about that when others are around. But between the two of them, they know that it goes far beyond that and that is what I love so much about that movie.
What an amazing character , I liked Alfred since I was a kid, I've always liked how loyal he is and how much he loves and care for Bruce like if he was his own son.
HOLY shit.. I didn't know Alfred's father was named Jarvis... That really doesn't make Tony Stark aka Iron-Man look like less of a Batman rip off either.. his helper robot is named Jarvis.. lol
Steve Wilson The Stark family butler, Edwin Jarvis (human, not machine) first appeared in the Marvel Comics title: Tales of Suspense, Issue #59, NOV/1965. He served Iron Man's parents, Howard and Maria, until they died and stayed on to maintain the family mansion. When Tony Stark turned the family mansion into Avengers HQ, Edwin Jarvis became the butler to the Avengers.
Greatest butler of all. even in convergence where he met an alternate earth Grayson he was hardly surprised and offered him a cup of earl tea, graysons favorite.
Alfred's Father = Jarvis Pennyworth Alfred's voice actor in Arkham Games = Martin Jarvis Iron Man's Voice assistant = J.A.R.V.I.S Alfred's Job = Being Batman's J.A.R.V.I.S Coincidence? I think not.
alfred is one of the most compelling and the best characters ever created. what he did for batman when his parents died is really touching and alfred is batman's father, his only family he has left. the bond that these two share is very special and something unbreakable. what i love the most about alfred that even in darkest of situations he is there to comfort and elevate bruce from his doubts and troubles but in the other hand he can be so sarcastic and cynical and that is what i love about alfred the most. i loved michael gough's alfred but my favorite alfred is michael caine. i look forward of seeing jeremy irons as alfred and what would i like to see about his version is that he was an old MI6 agent who could train bruce and finally see alfred kick some ass.
I always thought Alfred was born old but the one i like the most is the Arkham series version, he's witty and classy and shows his love for Bruce like a true father
+deathliest wolf Superpill, yeah. It's in Injustice: Gods Among Us, great comic series, you can read it online, although be prepared with a box of tissues nearby, it gets very emotional. XD
"He might not be the butler that Batman needs, but he's the one he deserves." And favorite is TAS Batman. Former MI6 spy, adoptive "father" in Bruce's childhood, and loyal friend theraout.
In a idealized / fictionalized comic book world where there are an increasing amount of young beautiful people to pick from, it's always the older characters like Alfred Pennyworth or Julia Kapatelis and Ma and Pa Kent who make the superheroes they had a hand in raised so human and interesting. There's something to be said for age, experience, and quiet, watchful dignity.
Best origins video you guys have done yet I knew nothing about the pre-crisis version of his past I thought I knew everything about Alfred learned a whole lot keep up the great work
I feel like they are slowly starting to run out of things. I wonder when we will get to origins of that one guy batman punched in the face that one time
Thank you for this account of the full comic-book versions of Alfred. I first read the first origin story in a Batman Giant in 1969, but I have known about Alfred since 1962 when I read an old 1960 Batman comic book-the first of many to come.
Alfred Pennyworth. The butler everyone wishes they had

HOLY shit.. I didn't know Alfred's father was named Jarvis... That really doesn't make Tony Stark aka Iron-Man look like less of a Batman rip off either.. his helper robot is named Jarvis.. lol
Steve Wilson Iron Man's Jarvis was originally a normal butler as well :)
Stats goes to 11
After I watched your video I looked up the voice actor of Alfred from Batman TAS. He passed away this past May and I never knew about it.
why haven't they made a movie about alfred yet???
They could dedicate an episode of Gotham to Alfred!
***** super girl got one, and it was not pretty
MadMagician
I doubt they'd have enough of a story to tell to warrant a feature length film, a full episode of gotham would be very cool though
Every one loves alfred
Who’s here from the new Pennyworth series?
Greatest butler of all. even in convergence where he met an alternate earth Grayson he was hardly surprised and offered him a cup of earl tea, graysons favorite.
Alfred's Father = Jarvis Pennyworth
Alfred's voice actor in Arkham Games = Martin Jarvis
Iron Man's Voice assistant = J.A.R.V.I.S
Alfred's Job = Being Batman's J.A.R.V.I.S
Coincidence? I think not.
He was not a voice assistance for Iron man in a comics, it was, you guessed it, Iron man's Butler
And yet Alfred came way before jarvis did?
alfred is one of the most compelling and the best characters ever created. what he did for batman when his parents died is really touching and alfred is batman's father, his only family he has left. the bond that these two share is very special and something unbreakable. what i love the most about alfred that even in darkest of situations he is there to comfort and elevate bruce from his doubts and troubles but in the other hand he can be so sarcastic and cynical and that is what i love about alfred the most. i loved michael gough's alfred but my favorite alfred is michael caine. i look forward of seeing jeremy irons as alfred and what would i like to see about his version is that he was an old MI6 agent who could train bruce and finally see alfred kick some ass.
alfered is a true hero. he's the one make batman
I always thought Alfred was born old but the one i like the most is the Arkham series version, he's witty and classy and shows his love for Bruce like a true father
I heard that alfred beat the living shit out of superman, is that true?
Yep thats true
how?
+deathliest wolf a pill that made him powerful
+deathliest wolf Superpill, yeah. It's in Injustice: Gods Among Us, great comic series, you can read it online, although be prepared with a box of tissues nearby, it gets very emotional. XD
Alfred Pennyworth Ah, Alfred, calm and collected as always I see. How's Master Bruce?
Jeremy Irons Deserves More Praises as Alfred J. Pennyworth in Ben Affleck’s Batman Movie Series
you fucked up at like 0:50 when you said "2000's Batman blah blah" the box said 200's
Heres your cookie
Change That To 0:48 When You Go To 0:50 It Shows The Wrong Spot
"He might not be the butler that Batman needs, but he's the one he deserves."
And favorite is TAS Batman. Former MI6 spy, adoptive "father" in Bruce's childhood, and loyal friend theraout.
Huh. Anyone else find it ironic that the name of Alfred's father is the same as Iron Man's Butler?
+Matt Lipton i do.
The are not even from the same comic universe
Out of all the origins, I think the one that most people remember today -- him having served Bruce's parents -- was the best emotionally.
I wonder when we will get to origins of that one guy batman punched in the face that one time
Franklin?
Dave?
You saying Alfred isn't important to Batman?
No it's more like You the viewer are running out of ideas. they got polls for these kinds of things and the viewers decides what next.
Yeah right like someone could punch batman in the face
Thank you for this account of the full comic-book versions of Alfred. I first read the first origin story in a Batman Giant in 1969, but I have known about Alfred since 1962 when I read an old 1960 Batman comic book-the first of many to come.
