A very underated film. This was clearly an homage to the relationships of the characters especially Kirk, Spock and McCoy. They were a family and this was the key point. Not the greatest movie but if your a true fan you will appreicate it

I just recently rewatched them all, and was surprised I liked this one alot... the last time I saw it was in the theater. It's really not bad at all... You can tell there are some compromises, and I think Shatner was a little mean or neglectful of some of the characters, but it's not really that bad.

Star Trek V was a mess in terms of story ... but I'd argue that if you love the Kirk/Spock/Bones dynamic, it's the best in the series for interaction between the trio. The scenes in the park at night are just beautiful, watching them sing and joke together. If nothing else it gave us time with these characters to just relax and enjoy them.

I love the Voice of an Angry God and Barrier music from this film. And it absolutely NAILS the Roddenberry humanism philosophy when Kirk KNOWS (and is proven right) that some weird energy alien isn't God, because what God means is inside us not out there somewhere. Some fantastic stuff in this one. And of course, THE speech. "I NEED my pain!"

I think that people tend to be too hard on this movie. Granted, it has a number of elements that simply do not work, but there are also a number of elements which work very well.
People remember that the over all story was weak, but forget the (IMHO) excellent character development.
People remember the cartoon-like Klingon torpedo shot, but don't remember the beautiful scene with the Enterprise parked in front of the full moon.
Keep an eye out for all the good bits, and you might find that this movie is not as bad as people say it is.

I return to this film over and over again. The best film that focuses on the trinity of TOS: Kirk, McCoy, and Spock. How Kirk isn't flummoxed at all by the "all powerful entity" claiming itself to be God (because he's personally dealt with very, very many of them). Sybok at the beginning as a laughing Vulcan. Sybok experiencing McCoy's pain and Spock's pain (which he didn't even know he carried). Sybok calling Kirk "my friend" to the entity at the end. Kirk talking about how he needs his pain (so soon after losing his son, who he really only knew because he was murdered). This is a very personal Trek film, and unfairly maligned.

  • @k1productions87
    @k1productions87 6 лет назад +20

Missed opportunity is indeed the best way to put it. I feel the payoff is far too subdued, as you find it in the final moments - "I lost a brother once. I was lucky I got him back" "I thought you said men like us don't have families" "... I was wrong" - implying the realization that Kirk, Spock and McCoy are indeed a family, sharing a deep bond and love for each other. Spock realizes this too in the Observation Lounge scene earlier when he says he cannot go with Sybok, because he found himself and where he belongs. There should have been far more time spent touching on that aspect, especially the internal conflict that must have been going on within Spock with regards to him and his brother. The deleted scene where Sybok expands on Spock's pain had so much more story possibility to reach into.
I wonder if Paramount was bitter at Shatner. I mean, coming right of the heels of the most overall successful Star Trek film at the time, and yet still refusing virtually every request Shatner would have to make.... it just seems like the studio was deliberately trying to sabotage this film for some reason. Maybe Voyage Home wasn't what they wanted, and they were upset we weren't returning to a traditional "good guy - bad guy" story that the audience wouldn't have to invest any actual thought into. Paramount wanted a popcorn Trek, and so tried to make sure any potential thought-provoking Trek would fail.
There was definitely Hollywood Politics involved. That's not to say that Shatner wasn't a back-stage politician in his own right. And while he would certainly do right by the cast,... he wouldn't do right by the executives. Something Roddenberry certainly learned early on in his career.

This film had a strange plastic look about it to me, the only scene that felt real and gritty and like Star Trek of old, was the scene where Sybok attempts to convert Spock, Bones and Kirk in the forward observation room.
In fact the scene with bones may well be one of DeForest's best scenes in Star Trek since The Man Trap way back in 66.

When the Enterprise goes to warp to evade the Klingon ship, its clearly a 2D cut-out. And the distance fly-by shots of the shuttlecraft a bit earlier were animations, not models, except for its crash landing. Disappointing.

This is actually along with the first one my all time favorite trek movie. I thought it was the only st movie that captured the spirit of the original series and the characters were great. Loved the theme and even the original bridge sound effects were in place this time. Loved the new bridge design and that even made the movie not looked dated today when compared to the 80s style of the other trek movies before. Despite the weak special effects and bare ending this is the trek movie that I still like the most.

Star Trek V has the best opening sequence of the entire franchise... when Sybok rides out of the sun, mind melds with the moisture farmer, reveals himself to be a Vulcan, and then laughs heartily... it's really quite awesome. Unfortunately, the rest of the film couldn't live up to that moment. In spite of its flaws, of all the films, it is probably the most true to the forumula TOS.

That scene of Kirk, Bones, and Spock in the brig is still some of the best character moments in Star Trek.

    • @k1productions87
      @k1productions87 6 лет назад +5

Mix that with the camping scene in the beginning, and it all caps off at the end with three simple lines
"I lost a brother once. I was lucky I got him back"
"I thought you said men like us don't have families"
      "... I was wrong"
Indeed, Kirk, Spock and McCoy ARE a family and share an unbreakable bond that transcends mere friendship. It is the whole reason why the bridge crew sacrificed everything, their careers, even their lives for the slim chance that Spock's memory could be saved, two years prior. Not a single one of them questions Kirk's decision to go back to Genesis for even an instant.
I feel that is something Final Frontier should have spent more time focusing on, and it could have been something truly special. But alas, it was not to be.

Star Trek The Next Generation was being shot at around the same time during its second season in 1988, as both ST:5 and TNG suffered from the 1988 writers strike. But as television series? No despite its 1 million dollars per episode budget, Next Generation also had a ton of stock footage repeats of the SFX shots of the Enterprise-D. So i've never seen how Star Trek V's budget could've been put into the ongoing spin off TV series instead. Star Trek V borrowed from TNG (set wise that is?) it wasn't the other way around though. Paramount killed STV off when it went out in '89 and have continued killing it by not granting it a much needed Special Edition of any kind over the years!
And had they waited 9 months later before production started they could've gotten their original choice for the character of; Sybok in Sean Connery! Who was filming Indiana Jones: And The Last Crusade at the same time The Final Frontier was being made. The planet and god seen in ST5; "Sha-Ka-Ree" is a nickname pun for Sean Connery by the way. Also worthy of mention is also the fact. The Klingon Captain Klaa seen in the film was also the same large extra/actor who was also seen in the extended TV versions and eventual 2002 Director's Edition of Star Trek 2: The Wrath Of Khan standing right next to Scotty's Nephew! As a fellow Engineering cadet.

From an industry veteran who worked on the first Star Trek:
    ILM were not "unavailable".
They (ILM) had had a disagreement with Paramount on overages on Star Trek IV, and basically held the negative for ransom until Paramount finally agreed to pay up.
So when it came time for Star Trek V, Paramount told ILM they weren't the only game in town and proceeded to offer the VFX to whoever could create the best "God" VFX.
Went to the guy who made a really stunning shot of "God" but from what I gather, the process was too costly and time consuming to do for the entire sequence. Also, for the rest of the effects, he didn't actually have a VFX shop and had to set one up from scratch - bringing with it all the problems of getting a new shop up and running. When the motion control didn't work, still frames were animated on the animation stand etc.

Star Trek 5 was the reason I became a fan. Unfortunately, like this video states, it had so many things that were against it like a huge year for blockbuster movies. In Melanie (I believe she wrote it) Shatner's behind the scenes book on ST5, they also had a Teamsters stike. I've always believed this should have been a TV movie of the week considering how it finally turned out. I still love it better than any of the JJ Abrams movies.

This movie has grown on me over time. The campfire scene is still one of my favorite Star Trek moments. The Sybok character (and Laurence Luckinbill's performance) is highly underrated. It is not the worse film of the series anymore. I'd give that award to Insurrection. If the movie had decent special effects, a better thought out ending, and less "forced" comedy, it would have been better received.

The rockwork that came up from the ground before Sybok, Kirk, McCoy, and Spock, and the shuttle bay in particular. But there were moments for me that I liked with the lighting here and there; I really liked the time out on the observation deck. 'The opening scene with Sybok coming out from the distance and "saving one soul" there in the desert - I always liked that, but anyhoo'.

I loved the movie when it came out. 1. I enjoyed the premise 2. Loved the energy 3 Which is actually the main reason, after 2 movies we finally see the Entreprise and it's crew explore the universe, go on a mission and visit new worlds!!!!!! Right after the Wrath of Kahn we are stuck on a planet, than we got back to earth (granted IV was a great movie) but we don"t travel in space. Blowing up the Entreprise, killing of the the amazing twin Klingon characters and Kirk's son did not make up for a very bland villain and weak plot. If the twins had been the main villains surviving the movie to do damage in the series sure. In my book it's my 3rd favorite even if the production value is not there, it has a lot of heart and a great vision.

The studio agreed, and the result was they got a critically lauded film that also made them a ton of money. If Shatner had offered to give up his salaries as actor and director in order to secure more time to complete this movie he was so anxious to make, I wonder what would've happened?

I don’t think it was shatners fault. Despite its flaws there are some excellent moments, and bones reliving the death of his father has to be one of the best moments of character development in a trek movie to date, and a brilliant performance from deforest Kelly. You even get a glimpse of Kirks bullet proof character “ I NEED MY PAIN “ ..... V is not a great trek film, but it certainly isn’t bad. There are brilliant moments contained within. I would have loved to have seen Shatner take on another movie and given a decent budget to back him up.

This was the most classically Star Trek of the Trek films. And, to my surprise, Shatner really understood all of the characters. He also gave each character screen time, and paired them off, knowing they worked best when they played off each other.

Actually, this is one of my favorite of the movies. Mainly because it reminded me of the TOS episode: A Piece of the Action. Mainly because it seemed like the actors were having a good time.

5 was unfortunately the first Star Trek movie I saw in the theater. I was so excited! The one positive thing that I do like about this movie is how much time they spend on the Enterprise with time spent in many rooms we hadn't seen until that point. I also love the new bridge for this movie. And unlike the Abrams movies, there's no lens flare to keep you from enjoying the cool sets. The exterior effects are unbelievably bad, and the story is garbage, but at least there are some good things about the movie.

the studio and others hate that shatner/kirk is a lot to do with why people are still interested in star trek. could berman or any of the others produced ANYTHING since tos that would create a franchise or brand or property? not even close. shatner was denied final cut because the powers that be could do it.

I thought the camping scenes were memorable. The Hobbitman zipping round on grav boots? Singing by the campfire between saving planets? I got into that.
I never bought the "search for God" thing until now and didn't fret about it. I think a Director's Cut eliminating most of the semi-veiled philosophy and stuff it would drag a lot less. Just edit out all the non-story moving scenes (like cutting out Jar-Jar's nonsense dialogue).

There are some nice moments in the picture but there are also things that didn’t work for a cast of this age. Shatner’s ego is very evident in the picture as well, setting his character up as the only one to see through Sybok. I don’t think any of the old crew would have betrayed their friends and am glad that Nimoy and Kelley didn’t go along with it. Too bad the other cast members didn’t have the same clout. The big problem with the picture is the story. It was very flawed from the start. As Bennett pointed out, it couldn’t help but disappoint or upset some viewers. There is no way that Paramount should have agreed to it. As a fan, it was such a disappointment - to go from a great picture like IV and then to get V as the follow-up. For me, it is the worst of the classic team pictures.

It has some great moments and looks good too, apart from the poor special effects. It's way more enjoyable than Insurrection. Goldsmith's score is impeccable.

Star Trek V had some of the best character moments in the entire series... ie., the Yosemite campfire sequences and the wonderful moment to learn that Spock is the (surprise) gunner on-board the Bird of Prey at the climax of the story.
With today's improved CGI, it's too bad that the movie can't be reedited and the effects augmented. Heck, I've known people to do more professional looking CGI work at home on a PC that is light years better than the budgeted effects in the original movie.
And when i mean reedited or deleted, the first thing to come to mind is the Uhura fan dance sequence.
In addition, I think there is a "kindly" omission in the video when discussing the budget. The budget became problematic due to the actors' salary demands---especially those of the director.

I was living in Texas when the film came out. When Kirk made the statement about God being our making, the whole audience booed it. It probably evokes similar reactions in other southern states.

Why can't these damn studios just give the cast and crew the freedom to pursue their artistic vision? Movies that have this freedom almost always do better than movies that don't, thus making back any money the studio would've spent.

I don't understand why there hasn't been a Director's Cut of this film while Shatner is still alive and well to work on it. With CGI the bad FX(pretty much everything)could easily be fixed and he could have his gargoyle creatures at the end. But the man is 90 so it's not like they have forever to get started

While it's not a great movie by any means, I find Star Trek V to be one of the more entertaining entries in the franchise and its premise is pretty interesting. It lends itself to rewatching more than several other films in the franchise. Take the "Scotty bangs his head," "Uhura's hoochie-coochie dance," and "Row, row, row your boat" out of it, and I think it would have been better received. I always watch some of it when it comes on TV.

Same as those Star Wars prequel haters, I think George sold it to Disney out of spite lol. I would've done the same and I hope George is laughing his a$$ off at the bank

9:35 : Wait -- Roddenberry _wanted_ a Starfleet Marine Corps? I have never heard of anything like this, and I've been a Trek fan since the 70's. My understanding has always been that Roddenberry fought tooth and nail to tone down the militaristic nature of Starfleet, as far as he possibly could. That _especially_ included anything resembling "marines", which is why they never appear as a group, at all, even by mention. It is always "Starfleet Security Officers", instead. I'd be really interested in knowing where Roddenberry said this.

This movie explains exactly why I don’t listen to the popular demographic or just popular opinions, period. I actually love this movie and I think it’s so much better than The Motion Picture. And I don’t hate the motion picture either but I do find it to be the weakest of the first six movies actually.
