My name's Paige and I have just finished my second year studying Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge. I am a member of Jesus College and make regular vlogs of my day to day life at uni, including lectures, supervisions, and social activities.

I just started sixth form and let me tell ya.... if I get just one mistake in maths it's Heaven. If I get no mistakes, it means I've mastered life.

The value I see in you having completed this assignment is that you now know in what area you need to develop your skills, and that’s why I think the students were given this assignment, to get their heads in the game because this major is expecting you to hit the ground running.

Haha this was so me 2 years ago when I did the summer projects, don't worry about finding it hard at this stage (also the person who marked it in my year was really friendly about it all). It definitely gets easier with practise. I have a lot more advice I can give on how to do well in CATAM and the CATAM essay choice so feel free to message me as an older student if that would be helpful for your yeargroup. :) Best of luck!

When coding you will bash your head over mistakes. But after you fix those mistakes and the code works as intended, it feels soooo good.

Just came to say, everyone has their strengths and weaknesses - while I may be able to code something in a heartbeat as a software dev myself, I could certainly not do 90% of what you do as well as you do. No one is brilliant at everything, set out with the goal of improving yourself and not achieving excellence in everything under the sun and you'll do great in life

You reminded me of the process so frustrating, and so rewarding at the end, that it was to write my thesis on the application of cymatics in the architectural acoustic design process. It was not easy to develop a model that would render the sound waves, and with it the own vibration modes associated with the standing waves. It wasn’t easy apply all that physics formula and concepts in to my own career and also find software to allow me do that, Among the few options I had, I kept was mathlab and GeoGebra , but any of them didn't allow me to analyze the results as I needed. As an architect I opted for 3D modeling, through grasshopper a plug in for visual programming for rhinoceros, commonly used for parametric design and generative architecture, I could visualize the maximum reververation in an auditorium, to generate specific corrective measures through acoustical resonators and diffusers.

I loved the video, the coding causes you stress because of the errors that occur but when you compile it feels excellent, MATLAB is interesting because it brings many functions I am also starting with this language and it motivates me to see the dedication you give to the study.

Coding is hard, it's something you have to constantly keep working on. I've just started an HND in Web Development and it's already hurting my brain and that's the lectures slowly breaking us in lol
You should see if there any free courses, training on coding around the Cambridge area? I am sure there must be like STEM groups at your University that could help you.

I work in the actuarial industry and had absolutely no programming experience when I started out, but really wish I had! If you're planning on an actuarial career, it's great that you're getting this exposure to coding now. (Having said this, certainly not all actuarial roles require programming.)

I think one of the stupidest mistakes I made when using MATLAB was with the spelling. I kept spelling it as "colourbar" and MATLAB kept returning errors. It took me nearly 45 minutes of debugging to realised that MATLAB uses American spelling.
Colormap(gray) gets me every time! 2 americanisms in one
I'm currently working on the euler method, rk4, etc at the moment with matlab in one of my first year subjects
I swear I always find that you are studying similar topics to what we're going through in college. I am currently working with mathlab as well, though I am studying engineering and not physics. So much in common in different careers :D

When I was in uni, in North America, we had assignments to do, but in the UK uni they were called assessments. I think, in the UK, the items to do that were not marked in any way were called assignments, but projects for marks were only referred to as assessments. .....Two geographical locations divided by a "common" language?....so does Cambridge call them assignments or assessments?

Hay Paige, it might be a bit late but if you are interested you should try R (if matlab is not mandatory..) there are many packages which might help you and it is fun to try to automate with it your work...

Was there an option to take a programming module in your second year?
In physics we do some c++ in second year and matlab in first year.
Usually all Physics degrees do programming it is usually not an option so it must be completed basically

In my experience, Matlab is fairly easy, it’s just really different from other languages
