Testing a Bobcat E42 R2-Series

- Here I am back up at my family friends place to help dig out a foundation, bury some concrete, take down some trees and do some clean up. For this project, I am demoing a Bobcat E42 R-Series mini excavator to see how it compares to my current E26 and if it would be worth getting a 5t size excavator alongside my current 3t.
Equipment Used:
Excavator: 2022 Bobcat E42 R-Series
Grade Tool: Ziplevel Pro-2000 Altimeter
Camera: GoPro HERO 7
The e42 is a great machine!!! NO DEF required.

Thank you for this vid!!!! I'm looking into getting a mini x and doing what your doing in hope I can quit my job and playin with dirt/demo full time. I'm trying to keep myself from rushing into it but it's hard cause I want yo do it now!!! Lol. I have my truck and dump trailer payed for and am looking to pay cash for a equipment trailer then finance a mini x. I'm sure at first it will b a lil rough but I hope 8 can make this dream work. Interesting review. I love the E42 and wanted to get one, but I opted for a used E45. The E45 is about the same weight and power class. Sometimes it is too big. Other times it is too small. Those times, I rent the appropriate size machines.
The salesman at my Bobcat wishes they still had the 45 as a current model. The 45 is basically a hybrid of the 42 and 50 specs. Definitely can see many jobs Ive done where the 5t class would be overkill, but also many where it'd be the perfect fit.
Brian, I remember you mentioned about possibly upgrading to a Bobcat E50 in the comments of a previous video of yours. But whatever equipment upgrade you decide, you have shown the qualities of a successful businessman. You seem to make due with whatever equipment you own. However, your Bobcat E26 was pretty impressive on past videos.
Yeah, I actually demo'd an E50 this past weekend as well (another video for that one). I would most likely get the 50 for the extra reach and leverage. However, I would not trade in my 26, I would keep that and add in the 50. The 26 is an awesome machine, but always helps to have the right size machine for each job!
Had to mute this video during the first little while. The claws of the bucket scraping on the rocks is like nails on a chalkboard xD
Man, that rim joist is rotted out! I had replace mine last year and it was a horrible job. The machine however, what a dream machine. I’m jealous
Im going to start with the 42 since im afraid anything smaller may not have the HP needed for land clearing. I figure can always upgrade my truck later.
@Steven Seagull Yes the E60 seems like the next step up, but it might be close to being too heavy without a CDL license.

Brian, Yes expanding can be financially beneficial however, like you mentioned a larger trailer and possibly a dump truck. Honestly I am happy that you are staying with the E26. I believe the E42 has the dreaded DEF to contend with. Not to mention more fuel consumption. This video has two side to it. Go deeper into debt or spend a little more time with your present machinery. I vote for the latter. JMO, Ken
The E42 doesn't require DEF. That isn't required until you get over 75hp engines I believe. Also, I would be getting an E42/50 alongside the 26. Wouldn't trade that little guy in!
@@CarlsonSonLandscapingLLC Brian, I am glad that you will hang onto the E26. Have you looked around at other brands like Yanmar, John Deere ,or Case, Volvo, Komatsu?. Thanks for informing me about the DEF. Ken
I have not really considered any other brands, not because they do not perform well, but since I already own everything Bobcat. It would make it more complicated and expensive (different dealer, attachments, couplings, etc). Also, it goes back to my original selection of the E26, where Bobcat has the best dealer, support and availability in comparison to any other dealer in my area.
@@CarlsonSonLandscapingLLC Brian, I understand your reasoning. I am simply trying to look at other options. Other brands have there owners happy also. "Tractor Time With Tim" He is very happy with his "Case" for example.
Yea, I don't really think I have seen or heard anything bad about any of the major brands in the mini-excavator space. They all seem to perform really well and it just comes down to user preference and dealer support.
the major debate continues. what size mini to buy. I own a 2017 304e2 Cat 40.5hp and its perfect for the most part. But i just bought a Takeuchi 235-2 because of the longevity of no emissions on a 25hp diesel and fuel sipper. suppose one can ask. will the customer pay more for the e42 vs e35(e26) does the cost of ownership make sense comparing the two. I don't have the answers
use a weed bucket that wat will catch all the small peices without having to pick
them all up
I just bought an E26 a month ago and because of the amount of rocks I have on my land it proved too small for me, but I can't afford a bigger one lol
I have been impressed with the size of rocks, stumps and material I can move with the 26, but it for sure has it's limits! And yes, these machines are quite expensive!
@@CarlsonSonLandscapingLLC aye, I saw a lot of your videos before making the decision to buy it, dont get me wrong, its a inpressive machine, I have posted vídeos moving a lot of rocks and one of them had almost 1ton I believe. My biggest issue is to break thru the ground when its full of gravel and little rocks. But Im enjoying it, its helping a lot and I believe I will make magnificent things with it.
Awesome, persistence will definitely get you to where a slightly bigger machine would get (as long as time isn't a major factor!)
How much was your machine?
trade in the 26, and get a 50, it’s a no regret decision. the 26 really is far too small for most jobs, the 50 will do all of the 26 jobs plus so many more. if anything that’s a smart business decision. I have a 21 Deere 50G, had a Kubota kx-040, night and day on what jobs i can do, and the speed. my company is also part time so i get it trust me
I have considered that! However, I really like having the compact nature of the 26 for various small backyard projects I get on. Plus, it would be nice to have a back up machine, as well as something my dad could take to another job in tandem to me running the 50 or 26 elsewhere.
@@CarlsonSonLandscapingLLC honestly you won’t miss the 26, and if you do need one that small the rental cost on a small excavator is cheaper than a 50. Your more than welcome to travel across the boarder into mass and try my deere 50, you’ll be heading right to Rozencrantz to buy one.
Haha thanks for the offer! I did also demo an E50 a few weeks back (and have run older m-series 45 & 50 as well). At this point, it is not really a question of if I should, but when I will. Just want to time it right and not put myself in a spot where I have to make payments on a single machine where I could have otherwise gotten a few attachments for my current machines that get me into more jobs vs just being more efficient at the same ones.
Do you need a DOT# to transport that excavator?
You don't since you can tow it with a 3/4 ton truck and trailer that is under 26k combined gvwr.
Do you know if this e42 was a long arm or standard arm?
It was a standard arm
If I'm looking to buy just one Excavator should I buy the E35 or the E42? It seems like the E42 is so much more heavy duty and powerful than the E35.
It really depends on the work you are looking to do, along with the towing/transport setup you have. I would definitely go for the 42 if you are not planning on doing really tight or small jobs where you need a zero tail swing model.
@@CarlsonSonLandscapingLLC What are you hauling with? Are you using 3/4 ton truck or half ton? What is the gross vehicle weight of your trailer?
I haul my equipment with a 2020 GMC 2500 and 14k 17'+3' SureTrac. The trailer has ~11k payload.
What is the gross vehicle weight rating of the trailer?
It is a 14k gvwr trailer with ~11.5k payload rating
