  • On a rather calm Sunday morning, I managed to get some free time and decided to go railfan at the Auburn Amtrak Station. This station has interested me for a while mainly because it serves as the eastern terminus for Amtrak's Capitol Corridor in addition to being part of UP's Roseville Subdivision. The Auburn Station is interesting such that it sits on only part of UP's Roseville Subdivision, where the double track mainline splits due to the grade over Donner Pass, just prior to going through the City of Auburn. Track 2 in particular runs through the north side of town as well as past the Auburn Station at a lesser gradient than Track 1, with predominantly uphill traffic due to the lighter grade. I initially wasn't expecting too much traffic through here due to the split mainline, but over the course of a couple hours, a decent amount of train action came through as well as intermediate times of serene, quiet mountain atmosphere between trains. In addition, the uphill grade, surrounding mountains, and the crossing just to the south made for some loud full throttle locomotives and reverberating horn action !
Train 1 : Amtrak 729 with F59PHI #2015 & CabCar #6962. The Auburn Station currently only has one round trip train service per day, with westbound trains departing in the morning and terminating eastbound trains in the evening. As seen in the video, there is a storage track just to the north of the station where the trainset is placed for the overnight layover.
    Train 2 : Union Pacific MRVNP-30 with C45ACCTE #7993, SD70M #4952, C44AC #7242, #7152(Mid-DPU), & C45ACCTE #5294(Mid-DPU). Nice crew and an interesting catch with the Mid-DPU !
Train 3 : Amtrak 6 (California Zephyr) with P42DC #195, & #176. Not too soon after UP MRVNP-30 passes, Amtrak 6 appears rounding the corner following closely behind.
Train 4 : Union Pacific MRVNPB-30 with C45ACCTE #8058, #8053, & SD70M #4078. Awesome crew with some blasts of the horn from the engineer as well !
Train 5 : Amtrak 5 (California Zephyr) with P42DC #72, & #145 (Phase III Heritage Unit). I wasn't expecting Amtrak 6 to pass through, but right as I was beginning to leave the crossing activated and I managed to get the shot just in time. It appears that UP has been routing the daily westbound Amtrak 6 over Track 2 versus the typical Track 1 quite often recently.
    Thanks for Watching !

Liam Saucedo Thanks ! It's not too big of a station, but it's definitely interesting to see where the Eastbound Capitol Corridor trains terminate.

How is the action here at Auburn?

CentralValley Railfan8311 It really varies depending on the day of the week. It is worth noting that downhill of the Auburn Amtrak Station near Rocklin, the UP Roseville Subdivision double track mainline splits into two; where each track has its own routing. Because of this, you’ll only catch roughly half of the trains that traverse Donner Pass if you railfan at the Amtrak Station. Plus, the dispatcher may route certain trains on one or the other mainlines based on the steepness of the grade and how heavy a particular train is. On this particular day of the video, I stayed there from roughly 7:30am until past 12:30pm and only two freights came by. (There was a 3+ hour wait after Amtrak 729 departed until the first freight appeared). However, on other days I have visited the station for leisure and not officially railfanning, I’ve seen freights pop up almost immediately, so it all truly varies on the day. Hope this helps !

Do you remember the days of the week that you were at the station?

CentralValley Railfan8311 For this particular day, it was a Sunday and it was a relatively slow day. The other days I’ve visited were weekdays, but I can’t remember which days of the week specifically. Generally though, a good rule of thumb is that freight usually kicks up more towards the later part of the week, when the customers have business and ship out product to a destination. That’s when the trains are made up and are more common arriving or departing major hubs like Roseville, en route to its next hub or destination. Weekends are generally a hit and miss though. One weekend you can get tons of action, and others not so much. This is just from my personal observation though and it may vary from other folks’ observations. Hope this helps as well !

johnipie 460 Yes indeed. The station is only accessible by Track 2, which runs along the North side of the city.
