In the 1980’s I curated the Hard Rock Cafe collection and we had this guitar. When I played Not Fade Away on it everyone within earshot got goosebumps. I’ve played a lot of famous guitars in my career and this one has more mojo than all the others put together!
I'm from Levelland a small town 15 minutes outside of Lubbock. Buddy Holley inspires alot of the music I create and my girlfriend took me to the museum which I've heard about but never went. The energy of buddy and his belongings were so strong I was sick to my stomach and shaking. I've never felt energy like that in my life and it brought me to tears. It didn't help I took a hit of good LSD the night before. It was the most powerful moments in my life seeing buddy's guitars, bed and other belongings. I will never forget that feeling.
That's awesome! A legend playing on a legendary guitar. I would get excited to just hold a famous guitar but to see Graham Nash get excited over Buddy Holly's guitar is neat. That's respect!
I just watched this and .....I have nothing to say. I bet after 10 years it's all been said. But that flame story hit me 4 sure. I hope this guitar is stil around telling a story, the story that Buddy never finished..
Other than Elvis and the Beatles, could there ever be a peer to Buddy Holly? Had Buddy's plane not crashed that night, I think rock and roll would be different today. Our loss, but Buddy's glory forever.
He didn't diss them he was drawing attention to the fact that ALL of the Hollies had named their group as an acknowledgment of how much they admired his music.
Buddy is the real KING of rock n roll. He wrote his songs while Elvis was an entertainer. I know Elvis fans will disagree. Then of course Chuck Berry is iconic as well. I’m not saying anything that has already been said.
The hollies and the beatles both got their names and their juice to be musicians from Buddy Holly. Many others did too. The Texas et al rockabilly roots came from Elvis coming through and the Brits all got inspired by Holly touring europe (or was it just england).
And Gene Vincent and Carl Perkins and Chuck Berry and The Everley brothers wasn't just Holly and Elvis it was a whole bunch of the American rock n roll artists that inspired the Beatles and the British invasion.
"Touching the flame....". Loved this video. Graham seemed to get a bit emotional as did I as he admired the guitar, probably one of the mostic iconic pieces of Rock history. Would like to know how many owners this guitar has had...Anybody know?
He looks so much like Mark Lawrenceson, That aside,I love this clip.the awe that he genuinellly has and the respect he shows. GN once of "The Hollies" plays Buddy Holly. Great
i only knew about Buddy after watching the biopic the Buddy Holly story, anybody's grandparents see him in concert? maybe in that winter dance tour of 59 with ritchie vallens and the bopper?
It’s crazy how Buddy Holly is so revered but only had a few songs. Life was so much smaller back then in the sense that everyone was exposed to the same things.
there is a video from the early 90's of Gary Busey playing this guitar on the Arsineo Hall show...he mentions he bought it and played it for buddys parents....after playing buddy in the movie....does Gary still own it or is it in the care of a museum?
Bill Flagg and Rockabillies. He had a hand made guitar cover before Elvis or Buddy.Ihave pictures on stage in mid fifties .I have that D28 and the cover ,but just front cover, the rest was mildew.
"The Hollies ?" I feel that is a tad disrespectful for the Band that started him on his stellar career path. The Hollies did their best work.....after he left !
Can someone explain how the hell Buddy tooled the leather sleeve on it, I work with leather myself and I want to attempt to make one just like it but my only question is.. once it’s on how do you take it off?? Lol would love some feed back!
I think that he is using one of the 18 replica (more on the line of offspring because how it was made) of the buddy holly guitar. I MAY BE WRONG AND PLEASE CALL ME OUT ON IT! But the thing is that there is an organization named the buddy holly guitar foundation. Its perpus is to lend out one of the 18 replica (offspring) guitar that gary beusy own. The story gose that gary took the guitar to get it repaired. And when it was repaired, all 18 ferts where where replaced. So time pass and a someone found out about the original ferts. so they bought them, teamed up with the person who fixed the original guitar and made 18 duplicates of that guitar with each one having one original fert. With the blessing of buddy's wife to use buddy's name that team created an educational organization that lent out those 18 guitars to teach people the story of buddy holly and the importance of music. Graham is one of the charman (i think) to this organization and that is indeed buddys guitar (or the child or duplication NOT recreation)
I thought Gary Busey owned that guitar? No bs, you can watch him all coked out on the Arsenio Hall on RUclips. He sings and plays on that guitar, and talks about buying it from Buddy Holly’s family.
Buddy's Gibson guitar was made in WW2 it is called a "banner" guitar because the golden banner decal states "Only a Gibson is Good Enough". That was when women replaced many of the men at the Kalamazoo plant. Indeed, the guitars from this era are reckoned to have been very good instruments. Here's a link to show I am not kidding! www.voanews.com/a/gibson-guitar-women-kalamazoo-girls/1622199.html
Ah, Graham, i've said it before, ....who needs politicians ! This world needs people who speak from the heart,..speak from 'Spirit', ..speak from the soul, speak about cosmic truth...shine on dear friend..!!
I wish Graham would stop putting the Hollies down they were a great little Brit band with some classic tunes, and they put him on the road to his success.
I have always thought that Nash is, was and always be a jerk believing he is the nivel of the unirverse... I recognize he had it... but the last I saw him was a very wasted and tired voice of a very old man that believes he is a legend... Legends are The Hollies that stayed and still stay and keep on going even now.
@@jmshaw357 he's referring to buddy covering the guitar in leather not Nash covering the song. You don't have to play guitar very long to know that old gibson would sound 5 times better without the leather muffling the sound.
Yeah..I do get it the nostalgia and history of this guitar...because it was Buddy's. Its like 2 separate issues in my head. AMAZING...just amazing to hold & play that instrument. Yet still the point remains that the tone of the guitar will be badly affected by the leather...will it not? I have played pro with a 6 piece band behind me for 24 years....I think I know exactly how getting "it" feels.
Many thanks for the compliment. I play a Gibson J180 in my "Neil" show...so I do appreciate how wonderful these guitars are. Being a tribute show, it has its limitations...but, hey, it's been better than a "proper" job! lol!
Absolutely, the leather serves as a mute and doesn't allow the spruce top to vibrate. Ole' Waylon did it to his telecaster. To each his own I guess but I would NEVER do it.
Nash is just so full of his own importance these days - he seems to forget that he is a harmony singer - all his best moments are of being part of a band - ie The Hollies and CSN - this is so contrived and somewhat over the top - yes a nice moment but nothing more.
" As close to the flame as you can, Without getting burnt" Great quote
In the 1980’s I curated the Hard Rock Cafe collection and we had this guitar. When I played Not Fade Away on it everyone within earshot got goosebumps. I’ve played a lot of famous guitars in my career and this one has more mojo than all the others put together!
Gary busey bought it from Sotheby's in 89

Not only do I love Buddy Holly, I also love Graham Nash!!!!
You can feel the rock and roll
What a wonderful guy to do such a wonderful tribute to Buddy Holly. Grahm Nash is one of my all time favorites.
Great performance, you can tell he greatly respects the man.
the English loved Buddy... he was bigger there than anywhere
👍
That's awesome! A legend playing on a legendary guitar. I would get excited to just hold a famous guitar but to see Graham Nash get excited over Buddy Holly's guitar is neat. That's respect!
What’s great about that this guitar. It’s being played not stuck in a museum but it’s being used for what it’s meant to still.
one part of me agrees but another part wants it to be forever ..maybe take it out once a year and play a few buddy tunes
True, because it will only last so long before it crumbles
@@KingRiverVlogs like a couple three hundred years.
The more you play a guitar the better it sounds.
Gary busey bought this guitar in the 80s after the movie and played it on arsenio
You can see his youth returning, transported back to the time when he was a young teenager, listening to Buddy Holly. Truly a touching moment!
man, thought i was a buddy fan! The Brits loved Buddy Holly. The people that gave us Shakespeare and Dickens know how to recognize talent.
Would have loved for Nash to do a solo album, using that guitar, doing Holly covers, and calling it "Touching The Flame".
This was a treat, great song and a great artist.
what a nice cover ...graham nash....sings peggy sue so beautifully.....wow....
Buddy would be proud
Oh for fucks sake, he would more than likely laugh at your troll like comment.
Graham played this song perfectly well.
Oh to be a fly on the wall... It took long enough for this to come into my feed!
I asked Graham what this was like when I saw him at the show recently in Loig Beach and he related it was a real thrill to do this!
No words man i would be in tears such a legendary guitar
I saw Graham live last month. One of the best gigs Ive been to and I go to lots!
I just watched this and .....I have nothing to say.
I bet after 10 years it's all been said.
But that flame story hit me 4 sure.

It's not only Buddy's guitar....but it's a banner J45....which alone makes it very valuable! Made during the war by the "Kalamazoo gals"...
@chris rocco 42 , maybe 43
👍🙏
Really excited! Emotive tribute! Both Buddy and Graham had an impact on my musical life!
Other than Elvis and the Beatles, could there ever be a peer to Buddy Holly? Had Buddy's plane not crashed that night, I think rock and roll would be different today. Our loss, but Buddy's glory forever.

Dylan
And that’s Mt Rushmore of R&R
Robert Johnson
Elvis couldn't have produced what Buddy did in his final months in his Greenwich Village apartment.
Just WOW!!!
„Blue days, black nights“
He wasnt putting the Hollies down in this clip at all..he was merely making reference to the fact the "Hollies" got their name from Buddy Holly
Captain obvious.
Very cool! thanx for posting this
Amazing the impact a 22 year old had on so many people, of so many ages, from so many places. Wow.
That was just soooo-Cool man.
i want this guitar ! loveeeeeeeeeeee
Transatlantic accent
MAYBE THE BEST VID I HAVE SEEN IN YEARS...EPIC
What a treat.
Graham Nash ist einfach nur klasse!!
He didn't diss them he was drawing attention to the fact that ALL of the Hollies had named their group as an acknowledgment of how much they admired his music.
The miles it has seen and the stories it could tell...
Such a fine thing.
wow thank for shareing
this guy CAN sing & play

this is just great
thank you...
WOW!
My friend has one of Buddy's jackets.I have tried it on many years ago.It was given to him by the crickets.
The hollies and the beatles both got their names and their juice to be musicians from Buddy Holly. Many others did too. The Texas et al rockabilly roots came from Elvis coming through and the Brits all got inspired by Holly touring europe (or was it just england).
And Eddie Cochran.
Bobby Dylan too. Buddy Holly and Little Richard were the guys that set him on the path.
Simple easy songs to play that are still good and they make millions off of 3-4 chords
And Gene Vincent and Carl Perkins and Chuck Berry and The Everley brothers wasn't just Holly and Elvis it was a whole bunch of the American rock n roll artists that inspired the Beatles and the British invasion.
I lov This Sh
touching the flame
Awesome to play Buddy´s real guitar.
NICE !
"Touching the flame....". Loved this video. Graham seemed to get a bit emotional as did I as he admired the guitar, probably one of the mostic iconic pieces of Rock history. Would like to know how many owners this guitar has had...Anybody know?
gary busey bought it at auction in the 80's
Yeah, Buddy, then his estate, then Gary Busey ( at auction) then into a private collection ( via Christie's auction), where it remains.
Guy named Mike Malone owns it now ( stated at beginning of video).
He looks so much like Mark Lawrenceson,
That aside,I love this clip.the awe that he genuinellly has and the respect he shows.

32 recorded songs is a decent amount for the amount of time he was active.
I wouldn't dare hold that guitar. I'd be afraid I might break it.
👍

Graham says he held it once before "when Gary Busey owned it," but he clearly doesn't own it himself at this time.
No some guy bought it at auction Mike somebody they mention his name on this clip.
This comment thread about this video gives proof to me that all you have to do is say ANYTHING on the internet and you will get an argument ... LoL
Screw you! (LOL)
No you won't. ;)
EVERYBODY has an opinion and s entitled to it. Relax, man.

Wonderful song by Graham Nash
WHERE DID THE BLUE DAYS - BLACK NIGHTS COME FROM ? ELO TELEPHONE LINE ?
First song Buddy Recorded under his own name... Love me was from the same session, at Decca.

Speaking of Garry, he still plays his guitar. Probably not this one but he's still rocking it.
I think this is Gary’s guitar, I guess he sold it. Looks identical. Unless buddy had multiple made

Who owns it, that's what I want to know?
I saw Gary Busey playing this guitar on the Arsenio Hall Show
What happened to the classic instrumental part of this song!?
Wait when did Gary Busey give up Buddy's guitar?
Tracy Kelly dose Gary not say about the string breaking aswell
Gary busey put that guitar through hell. It looked brand new on Arsenal hall 25 years ago.
You gotta think how many assholes have touched that guitar since 1959 dude
He didn't even know "Love Me" is an early song of Buddy Holly...
What makes you say he did not know that?
thesunrecords-- and that's important why?
Who owns Buddy's guitar now?
GARY BUSEY??
I think It belongs to a museum in Lubbock, Texas. The Buddy Holly Center.
That's funny, I was just watching Gary Busey play this guitar on Arsenio Hall. Wonder why he gave it up.
I did exactly the same thing.....
Did Gary Busey sell that guitar to buy drugs? I can't think of any reason other than a serious cash flow problem.
I can never get the verses straight either.
Ah, Graham, i've said it before, ....who needs politicians ! This world needs people who speak from the heart,..speak from 'Spirit', ..speak from the soul, speak about cosmic truth...shine on dear friend..!!
You just know 1% of him wanted to Honky Tonk Man that thing over someone's head.
That exact Guitar belongs to Gary Busey, it is a Magical Guitar At That. Sounds Wicked
I'm going to pinch that guitar
I wish Graham would stop putting the Hollies down they were a great little Brit band with some classic tunes, and they put him on the road to his success.
That is pretty cool. graham was obviously pretty over-whelmed which he doesn't seem to get very often.

I recognize he had it... but the last I saw him was a very wasted and tired voice of a very old man that believes he is a legend... Nash is a legend - whether you like him or not.
Actually, I thought the tone was…pretty good. It belonged to an icon, a giant in my youth, and I I cannot help but to forgive him for covering it.
Forgive him???? Millions have 'covered it for fifty years--we don't need your forgiveness.
@@jmshaw357 he's referring to buddy covering the guitar in leather not Nash covering the song. You don't have to play guitar very long to know that old gibson would sound 5 times better without the leather muffling the sound.
So Gary Busey sold it?
Just a tad up his own arse. Never diss the Hollies! Great band, harmonies better than none! Nash? Flatters to deceive.
TEXAS
Cant believe busey sold that guitar
I don't care who covers a Gibson in leather...it is insane to do that! The beautiful tone would be utterly f**ked!
Yeah..I do get it the nostalgia and history of this guitar...because it was Buddy's. Its like 2 separate issues in my head. AMAZING...just amazing to hold & play that instrument. You're correct the leather cover will dampen the sound on the acoustic. It wouldn't affect Waylon's Tele though.
Nash is just so full of his own importance these days - he seems to forget that he is a harmony singer - all his best moments are of being part of a band - ie The Hollies and CSN - this is so contrived and somewhat over the top - yes a nice moment but nothing more.
I dare not write that comment....so very true.
Covering a guitar with tooled leather must really reduce the acoustic performance
I bet Gary Busey regrets parting with that guitar.
I thought Gary Busey bought that guitar
I thought Gary Busey owned this guitar? Guess he did.
