HK P30 LEM: Best Handgun EVER?!?

  • After extensive research and time spent testing and evaluating...
I can say that the HK P30 is by far my favorite handgun. I've long been a Glock 19, and Sig P226 fan, but after experiencing the P30's elegant design and luxurious grips I have to say it far surpasses both as a shooter.
Having once had a 9mm striker fired affinity, Heckler &a Koch have won me over to the joy of the DAO, albeit only with their firearms.

The 91,000 round test was actually done by an instructor named Todd Green. There were a few parts replaced starting at 19,000 rounds, but just springs. Those are technically maintenance items though.

That’s true, but still very impressive. Andy Rutledge did a test on his glock 19 and hit 80k, but replaced recoil spring assembly’s every 5k and a few other minor springs. FN boasted about their 20k endurance test that the LAPD did when adopting the 509 as their duty firearm. I’m not aware of any test that was done by anyone on any pistol that exceeded 90k without any spring replacements. Perhaps someone else knows of one.

Your explanation of why a second-strike pull has such a heavy pull weight to it is a bit misleading. The LEM trigger has a two-piece hammer: The hammer itself, and an internal cocking piece. In most cases, the internal piece is cocked, which leaves the trigger doing nothing but moving the physical hammer and then releasing it. Nice, easy, light. If nothing acts to reset the internal cocking piece (via slide cycling due to firing or manual manipulation), now the trigger has to handle ALL of it. It's the difference between about 5 pound pull weight (for V1 LEM) and a 16 pound pull weight. It has nothing to do with "pulling it back harder to make sure the round goes off." The second strike is going to apply the same pressure to the primer that the first one does.

Thank you for spending some time on the LEM trigger. I have very recently acquired the P30L with the LEM trigger to go with my P30SK v3. That first pull seems to take forever and it's easy to short stroke when you are "feeling" for the reset like a DA/SA set up. It just takes some range time to adapt. Nice job demonstrating. This weapon is a tack driver that is very easy to shoot.

I got the H K P30 in .40 call for a Christmas present. Love it. I'll be getting the P30L next in the same caliber. The way the gun shoots & feels in the hand is incredible. It has taken a while to adjust to the LEM trigger, but I'm still getting the hang of it.

Thank you! Finally someone with common sense about the trigger. This guns major clientele are police. Police do not need match triggers because of the high stress situations that come with their field of work. The simple GreyGuns drop reset shortening kit is a cost effective way to make the LEM more like the old USP’s. I think this gun is so good though that the only thing someone can gripe about it is the trigger and not to mention someone who is not a good shooter would like to have something easy to blame than blame themselves.

Without getting into the engineering (research H&K mP-30 engineering on RUclips) this guns superior durability and reliability vs its competitors is easily understood. Funny story, I got a P-30 lem 8 years ago and until 1 year ago thought I got skinned thinking that I should’ve gotten the single / double trigger (V3 variant I think) instead. Gun store owner buddy gave it to me for an $800 debt. It has lived in the safe since I got it, except I let a friend shoot it who’s a former special forces guy and a black ops contractor currently, and he raved about it. Ergonomics, accuracy, trigger etc. and he tried to buy it. I still didn’t get it. Finally my son told me he thought there was a conversion kit to change the trigger available. So I started researching that and discovered the conversion was not LEM to double/single but to other way around and that the LEM DAO trigger was much more coveted and even used by a number of competition shooters. So I took it down to my range and shot a few hundred rds through it. Awesome accuracy, superior ergonomics and not one malfunction and after getting used to the reset follow up shots were very fast. Sad that I didn’t know from the outset what I had but now I feel like I found a hundred dollar bill in a jacket I haven’t worn for years. Good review dude!

Yes the P30/P30L prices were pretty high, somewhere between $800-$1000+ I saw it went on sale awhile now, but they have not had it in stock. So when they did, I had to have it for $583+$7.99 shipping at GrabAGun. It's a P30L V1 LEM version. I saw they had it in stock since yesterday and they had a lot in stock, there were 2 left when I ordered it today. So I was close to not getting one for that price of under $600 shipped for a P30L. I love HK's I have the USP 40, VP9 Tactical and the P30SK v1 LEM. BTW I see these in 40 S&W at $500 often, I guess because since FBI and a lot of the law enforcement are going back to 9mm so the 40 is a lot more abundant and are less desired than the 9mm version.

I have a P30LS V3 DA\SA 9mm LE (law enforcement package) comes with 3 mags and Mepro night sights, got it on GunBroker (actual dealer was Omaha Outdoors) for $750 total price out the door after delivery and paperwork to my LGS. If you check you can get a good deal on a new one or get a used one for a better deal. It is hands down the most comfortable gun in the hand I have ever had. I am a Sig fan but have a couple HK's and the LEM trigger is nice but I prefer DA/SA triggers. I've heard of people buying the P30 with a DA/SA trigger and then sending it to Gray Guns for a trigger job...so they spent upwards of $900-1000 on the gun and then send it out for a $500 trigger job...what is wrong with people! I mean, it's their money but why wouldn't you just buy a gun set up the way you want it. I'm not bashing Gray Guns, I like them and buy trigger and spring kits from them often but to send it and and spend $500 for a trigger job is a little crazy in my opinion. You're spending $1500 for a gun unnecessarily....buy it with the LEM trigger from the factory and spend the $500 on light/lasers or mags or whatever trips your trigger. Just my opinion, I like HK but Sig is better overall, especially the factory triggers!

    Good vid, great pistol!
That's not why its stiff!... its stiff because the main spring has been released with the trigger pull and hammer release and because the slide has not re-racked the main-spring is not pre-loaded. That stiff pull is the logical product of it, you are loading/compressing the main-spring when you do that 2nd strike after a non-discharge. It doesn't somehow hit the firing pin any harder.
Also, the reason why they dont come with night-sights is because they are made in Germany and tritium is a radioactive substance subject to strict controls under German Export law... Thus, we get the glow worms.

I came, just to comment on the title of the video. YES!!! The H&K P30 LEM, IS the best handgun EVER!!! And I'm no neophyte or an H&K fanboy. In fact, I'm more of a 1911 guy, than anything. (Which caused me some confusion and frustration; because my maiden voyage with my P30L, was rife with failures of the slide to lock back; due to my 1911, thumbs forward grip.) I have a CZ P10C, on layaway. It had better be damned good; to get me to put down my new, P30L, Light LEM, police model, 9mm.

I'm sorry but the elastic band explanation is not correct. LEM DOA trigger is pretensioned when chambered. the second pull on a FTF round has absolutely NO impact on the force of the hammer on the firing pin. It does not increase the strength of the strike at all. It simply has to pre cock (pretension) the trigger as well as cycle the hammer. Not trolling just trying to correct a mis-spoken answer. If H&K customer service told you that nonsense they should be fired. Otherwise if that was true than we would have the ability to select between the tigger weight pull we prefer in that gun....12# or 5.6#.

+Jeff Hastings thank you for saying that. I appreciate you sticking with me :). No I didn't, I probably should have worded it better, but it was more of a "I'll get back to work" on 2/21. Because of your comment, I will do a video detailing what I've been doing :).

Great review sir. I felt the same way when I held the H&K VP9 after renting it at my local shooting range. I almost ran out & bought one the very next day but I really wanted one in a subcompact package for carry. Now someone recently steered me to this firearm saying it is really similar to the VP9 minus the striker fire. How do you compare it to the VP9 ?

+Wally Man is take the p30 all day long!! Now I haven't had a lot of time with the vp9, but after watching military arms channel put it through water, sand, mud and it did not do well. I also noticed while they look similar, the grip and texturing on the frame are not even close! The p30 has soooo much more detail and definition in it. I really wanted to like the vp9, especially at the price.. but there just really is no comparing the two... unfortunately.

It's lighter because it's actually a single action pull. You are explaining it wrong.
The hammer is a two part hammer and the external hammer is only attached to the trigger spring when the internal hammer is cocked, holding the hammer spring in place till the sear breaks it loose and pulls the external to the firing pin. It functions very similarly to a striker fired gun in use but can actually be double action if there's a failure to fire.
The only time this gun is not a single action is if you have a failure to fire and you double strike.
    You're welcome.

Great gun. You can make it even better with the Grayguns Short Reset Trigger. Just 99.00 and a gunsmith is recommended to install it. Check it out.

Gabriel De Leon bass pro shop in baton rouge Louisiana had this gun in 40cal on clearance for $550.... stupid low price. I barely passed it up but i am not a fan of the lem trigger or the 40cal

I still like the Hicham lock bull stomping bramble. It's 21 lbs takes getting used to. But it's easy after u get used to the 75lb triger pull. Beautiful firearm. Swinging Hatchet clidsdal is my second choice.

How's the accuracy as compared to the Sig and the Glock? I would assume at least on par but is it better?

    • @MarylandRefugee2014
      @MarylandRefugee2014  7 лет назад +2

+ksrwhlm for me, I've been shooting glocks for almost 10years, so when I pick one up it almost instinct/muscle memory where I get a general point of aim without even looking at the sights. Sigs, I have to focus a little more but I can be dead on very easy. With the HK p30... it was like a happy medium. Once I figured out where it was aligned to, it was very easy to quickly acquire targets.
