Yes Chris is certainly an interesting character. I heard about his life today, in a podcast. The podcast had been made in collaboration with an author of a biography about Chris Madsen. The author was fascinated by Chris and his story. Since he started his life in Denmark the author got curious, could he be traced in danish archives? His findings showed a man who ended up on the wrong side of the law and ended up in prison. He was a con man who exploited a goodwill toward war veterans. He decorated himself with medals he did not earn, to get people to pitty him and give him a coin. Eventually he conned an officer who actually fought in the war, and he went to the police. He ended up on a lot of wanted posters but kept up the game for 6 years. In prison he heard that the very worst prisoners were offered free tickets to America, he could not believe his luck. All he had to do was to make the prison-personel hate him. He changed his behavior to attain the status of a prisoner with no chance of ever becoming a law-abiding citizen. The prisons back then held political prisoners who, the gourvenment wished far away. This way Chris could enter USA as a totally different person, he could make his own story up (he never fought any wars before he emigrated, he went more or less from prison til USA). He was very good at telling good stories though. To me his shady past, makes the story even better - it shows that given a chance, people can make a better life for themselves and so he did. The author Frans Ørsted Andersen is a professor with a PHD in psychology, but also an interest in history apparently. www.saxo.com/dk/et-liv-paa-kanten_frans-oersted-andersen_haeftet_9788772180144?gclid=Cj0KCQjw1tGUBhDXARIsAIJx01m0j_eyIfDv8b7Lj5Tpc1B-gcsGMJLlUvwNrkHjotKrYpmR6PmHi1UaAjf2EALw_wcB Another danish author is Leif Rudi Ernst - who wrote an earlier book on Christen Madsen Rørmose (his full danish name) with title "Villain in Denmark - Hero in America" boggaragen.dk/index.php/product/leif-rudi-ernst-skurk-i-danmark-helt-i-amerika-marshal-chris-madsens-skjulte-fortid/ A short version can be found on the danish wiki: da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Madsen The danish and the english wiki, has different texts and differs in what is emphasized about Chris Madsen. Leif Rudi Ernst is listed in both wikis as a source. It is only the last 20 years ago that we in Denmark uncovered his shady past as a notorios con man. I does change how you see a person. It teaches us to be wary of what sources we use for our stories. When we hold up the records in Denmark with his own story, he had told in his biography - his whole existence before emigration was fabricated. He told he was from Jutland , but was actually from a different part of Denmark. During his 6 years as a criminal, he was caught by police 7 times and spent 1346 days in 10 different arrests and prisons. He became so notorious for his tricks that he had to try Norway, but he could not run from his reputation. He ended up pleading guilty and serving 2 years in high security prison. But his biggest con act must have been to write his own legacy... His story have made me interested in the fates of the 350.000 danes who emigrated to USA i that period. We know of another dane named Willard Erastus Christensen, who ended up as Matt Warner - the mormon kid, an outlaw - that survived and eventually became a judge and a sheriff. I have read other posts mentioning his past - but I got a bit carried away - but that is what history does to you. Finn Olsen Denmark
Man of honor forsure. The Lord had a plan for him. I pray they do get that monument done. Anyone that gave that much of there life in service definitely deserves it. Everyone wants to be remembered, that he was so selfless speaks volumes to me. Thanks for sharing 🙏🙏☝️
You're right. He certainly deserves it and no telling how many people have passed by him and don't realize who he is. I do know if the VFW doesn't get it done then the cemetery association is prepared to do so. The pandemic has just been rough on everything. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for this fascinating story about lawman, military veteran, etc. Chris Madsen. I hope the town will be able to have a monument built in this gentleman's honor because he's deserves it. Great investigating, as always. Take care 🐎
Thanks for the video and research. I had a problem finding that marker the first time I was there. He was stationed at Ft.Reno when the Cheyenne left Oklahoma to join Sitting Bull. He went with the troops that chased them. He saw Buffalo Bill charge a chiefs' son who was leading the group. He was on the burial detail at the Little Big Horn. They found the horse Comanche so badly wounded he could barely walk. No one had the heart to put him down and he followed them back to the riverboat. They loaded him up and he became another legend in history.

Another great story. As I prowl cemeteries I see elaborate monuments erected for people that for a few moments in local history contributed to their community. Rhett, thanks so much for this amazing story and the fascinating life had had. The love he has for his wife is so sweet after all thoughs years following her death. Did you by chance get to the other two Guardsmen? Again, thank you. PS I really like your music and pictures at the start of these stories.
I have. One of my first videos was visiting Bill Tilghman. I didn't have a beard then and it certainly wasn't the same style as I do now. I will probably go back and cover him more like I did here. Not to long ago, in fact this year, I visited Heck Thomas. I believe it was January or February. Seems like ages ago now. Thank you for watching!
The funny thing is that most of it is a Lie, the only thing true was the things he did in the us. Back in denmark he was actually walking around asking for money and lied about being a soldier. He was arrested and in prison he discovered that difficult prisoners was given a free ticket to the us. Therefore he began harassing the prison guards and was later given the ticket to the us. Still very impressive what he did in us
It's a bit funny to look through the different commentary and notice that pretty much every comment gets an answer from "Rhetty for History" but commentary from ""Matematik Overalt" and "William Rooth" and "madsdahlc" get no reply? Can only encourage you to read these comments. I have no doubt that Chris did many good things in the US, but if you are serious about history, you can't just "Cherry-picking" facts.
His story about Denmark before america is far from the reality.. this is not hateful but your fact are wrong:/ he was sent from Denmark to America because he was a criminal and was always pretending to have been in war.. but America would in the end turn him around😅 again no hate here just facts from Dk..😅
Yes Chris is certainly an interesting character.

Thank you and I appreciate you watching!
Nice video on Chris Madden. I need to get with you.
Thank you for watching!
I love cookies!
Thanks for watching Scooby!
Still very impressive what he did in us
rhetty for history huh?
i see what you did there
It's a bit funny to look through the different commentary and notice that pretty much every comment gets an answer from "Rhetty for History" but commentary from ""Matematik Overalt" and "William Rooth" and "madsdahlc" get no reply? Can only encourage you to read these comments. I have no doubt that Chris did many good things in the US, but if you are serious about history, you can't just "Cherry-picking" facts.
His story about Denmark before america is far from the reality.. this is not hateful but your fact are wrong:/ he was sent from Denmark to America because he was a criminal and was always pretending to have been in war.. but America would in the end turn him around😅 again no hate here just facts from Dk..😅
