    Such a unique vehicle, too. It isn't just "another plane" or "helicopter" or "glider."
    It can operate as all three and a quasi-rocket. 😂 Its so much fun to chuck around the place and canyon race in.

  • @BenBallard13

    The wings of the Arrakeen ornithopter aren't powered by motors, they're actually powered by desert "oyster" muscles. They're removed from the shells and implanted into the thopter's mechanics. Then there's an electrical charge passed through the oyster muscle to make it "open" and "close" very fast. Which in turn causes the wing mechanisms to oscillate incredibly quickly.
    The shield wall not only protects from sand storms and sandworms but it also protects from Atomics (nuclear weapons), it resonates at the same frequency/wavelength as the atomic weapon produces, thus negating the effects of the blast.
    You're correct on thinking machines/AI's being outlawed. It's why the Ixian Confederacy is much maligned as far as the Butlerian Jihad goes that all the major houses comply with. This is why they have house Mentats, they're effectively human supercomputers that operate complex planning strategies for them. The Harkonnens have Pieter De Vries (a "twisted Mentat" who isn't bound by the same ethical restrictions that regular Mentats are), the Atreides have Thufir Hawat.
    They're instantly recognisable by their red stained lips. The red staining is caused by Sapho juice, an elixir taken by all Mentats to greatly enhance and boost their thinking capabilities. Thufir Hawat was so powerful a Mentat that even the Padishah Emperor Shadam Corrino IV greatly feared his capabilities.? Most Mentats are regular "humans" who have natural innate ability and undergo training within the Order of Mentats that was first formed by Gilbertus Albans.
    However, Mentats could be artificially created by cloning humans in Axolotl tanks. The Bene Tleilax did so with Duncan Idaho, Paul Atreides' swordmaster after he was killed in a battle on Arrakis.
    "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind"
    But you CAN create a human mind in the likeness of a machine. These creations are called Gholas. This was done to try and subvert Paul Atreides by showing him they could create an exact equivalent of his dead wife Chani, but only if he abdicated his throne.
    Later on in God Emperor of Dune, Idaho reappeared as a series of gholas when Duke Leto II (Now God Emperor of the known Universe) ruled as a human-sandworm hybrid for 3,508 years. After the death of every ghola, Leto would have him replaced with a new one. To Leto, Idaho represented loyalty, humanity and the spirit of the unknown, something which the God-Emperor, having perfect prescience and memories of all his ancestors, knew nothing of. Having all the memories of Leto I and Paul Atreides, these kept bringing Idaho back as the feelings between all of them for Idaho resonated on a sub-conscious level he couldn't quite understand but acquiesce to every time Idaho was killed.

      And, eventually, [if one allows herbert's son's collaborations to become canon] an Idaho ghola finally becomes the sisterhood's goal: the kwisatz haderach. I'd hoped it was gonna be Bashar Teg, but oh well.

      @@kevinbarnard3502 I still don't know if I'm decided on subsequent books by Brian and collaborators to be canon for me yet.? Frank's books had this essence to them that sometimes I feel haven't been captured in later publications.?

    • @kevinbarnard3502

      they are really good books. While Clarke is my favorite sci fi author, Herbert is a close second before Heinlein and Brin. As incredible as the first movie was and part 2 looks like it's going to be, they're pathetic and just meh compared to the books. To me, that is how good Herbert was as a writer.

    • @BenBallard13
      @BenBallard13 11 месяцев назад

      @@kevinbarnard3502 tbh with a universe as rich as Herbert's Duniverse, you're never going to scratch the myriad of layers deep enough in a film. Yes, they were cinematically brilliant, but not as cinematically brilliant as your own imagination.?
      If you haven't already got it, and you can find it, I'd highly urge you to find the Dune encyclopedia.? It's out of print I think, however it is definitely worth the detective work. It contains ALL of F. Herberts research and drawings for the novels. It covers everything from the Fremen to Hunter Seeker workings, Bene Gesserit hierarchies, House genealogies, Sardaukar uniforms and medals, Sandworm life cycles, Face dancers, Fish Speakers, LANDSRAAD structuring, windtrap mechanics, the water ceremony for returning your water to the Sietch reserves, what the Butlerian Jihad is, Weirding modules etc. It's frigging epic.!
      This level of richness imo is extremely akin to Tolkien when it came to creating a world from lore. That's why those books are simply brilliant and so immersive.
      A similar sci-fi writer for me is Ian Banks (RIP). His culture novels are fantastic, again, I'd highly urge you read them if you haven't already.
      Tolkien, Banks and Herbert to me inspire that sense of "Fernweh" or "Farsickness" (German) - it's not homesickness, homesickness is a yearning for something you already know, love and live. Fernweh, or farsickness, is also a suffering, but is less clear cut and rectifiable. It is a consuming longing to be somewhere you’ve never been; an aching to be in a distant and unknown land, an ambiguous yearning for anything, anywhere else, as anyone else. The Welsh call it "Hiraeth", it's also known as "Saudade" (a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves).

      One word - Ekranoplan.
      This Lun class GEV (Ground Effect Vehicle) was a failed Russian experiment that worked on the ground effect principle. It not only works over land, but also water. The thing was fracking MASSIVE. It was intended to serve as a large military transport and heavy duty warship, to deliver large amounts of troops, supplies and military hardware under the radar capabilities of foreign countries.
      The only problem was that it had NO altitude capability. If it got up to any decent height, the ground effect stopped working - causing it to crash due to it's bulk and the laws of aerodynamics. They also forgot to factor in hazard avoidance, like trees, buildings, mountains etc? You know, all those things that regular aircraft could fly over very easily.?
      It's now left to rot somewhere on the shores of the Caspian sea in Daghestan.

    • @kyleog6527
      @kyleog6527 11 месяцев назад +4

      The higher you go, the higher the ground speed for the same indicated air speed due to air density. Ground effect is basically sitting on your own air cushion in laymen’s terms.

    I've theorized (and seen from the flying) that using the afterburner with the rotors set to glide lets you obtain a higher top speed. It seems that drag is exponentially higher when you go faster that the speed that the engine wans to to push the orthnicopter.
    you top out around 547 using the wings for power but have made upwards of 570 on a burning glide.

    Ground effect happens for both helicopters and planes. You can even see birds do it. Especially over water. Basically, the air under the wing has nowhere to go so it becomes extra compressed than normal creating almost a cushion of air under the wing. It causes very efficient flight which is why you see birds take advantage of it so much.

    iirc the original reason thinking machines were banned wasn't because they'd turn sentient and hostile, it was because by thinking for humans, it took away their ability to think for themselves, limiting their potential. It also made it very easy for those in CONTROL of the tech to enslave those who used it.

    Love your content Tomo. But I guess I must be feeling my age coz I'm flashing back to flying with my dad and wanting to do cool barrel rolls and loops, and him just sighing. Now I know. How about learning how to fly straight properly first. Unnecessary drama for my taste. I was wondering about something. Is there a side rudder equivalent on the ornithopter? If there is, that will help you straighten up the craft. The crab flying is slowing you down. Lots of drag.

    5:30 very strange that g force was high when you disabled wings/AB, but there was none when you did that sharp turn towards lading pad. Definitely some flaws in g-force simulation.
