looking at the artwork here in black and white, it looks to me really heavily influenced by the early Nemesis the Warlock stuff that Kevin O'Neill did in 2000AD - would love to see you guys having a look at that stuff, and also 'Marshall Law: Fear and Loathing', I've read that Kev O'Neill's art process was really unusual for that book.
Would love a reprint of this to get a closer look at the Spawn art! Agree that these first dozen or so issues are the “essential” Spawn issues. I culled the rest of the run I had but kept these McFarlane-pencilled ones. Make sure to nab a copy of the McFarlane Spider-man artist edition this Fall!!
The next relevant run of Spawn doesn't come up until sometime after issue 100 when Brian Holguin and Angel Medina take over. You guys should really check those out!
This is spooky. I have literally just been reading the Violator series for the first time and came across a reference to Alan Moore's thumbnails. Then this video appears within a couple of hours!
Spawn 12 double page spread (28:38): Bottom right corner, Liefeld inked that dude...Top left corner, Jim lee inked that dude... More Lee and Liefeld inking dudes in the debris all over the place!
Great video! I'd love you guys to do a video on Italian comic artist Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri. ...However I don't know how much of his work you can actually show on youtube lol.
Everytime Todd draws Spawn I look to see if he switched which side of the leg or arm has a spiked band around it. Same goes for pouches, in some cases I don't think he even drew them.
I believe that these issues were 100% Todd artwork with no help. That's probably why they look more sloppy than usual. After this he took a break because of deadline issues and had Grant and Greg come on then did a few more issues before becoming just the writer. I also remember there was some weird numbering thing he did around this era too. I miss Todd drawing comics though. When he stopped that was truly the end of an era.
Non-anime artwork is so refreshing

Sweet, new vid ! Thanx a million for this channel, shout out from Baltimore. The vault books and artist editions always blow me away, them deets !!
The drawing from issue ten that appears in issue nine is by Sim. He faxed it to Neil and Neil had Todd include it.
This was super entertaining. I learned a lot, thank you for the content.
