Jim was super influential to me. Back to Wizard magazine, being a small town artist who only had access to older comics at flea markets. I didn’t know how to make my own comics until I read a throwaway short article in the back of Wizard Edge that Jim shows how to make your own comics at any local print shop. Changed my life. YEARS later I met Jim at a con and had him sign my copy of Wizard Edge. He was floored that anyone saved the article or that it meant anything of value to someone. Still have it and is one of my prized possessions.
@@JimMahfood When I was 17-18, my twin and I ran a tiny self-publish book/zine and asked Jim to do a cover for us. He said yes and sent a great piece for a cover. It was mind-blowing and will always remember that and be grateful. Not long after met him at a Vancouver comic con and he was very cool. Remember buying some 40oz comics off him. Great guy and have followed a lot of his career since then. Thanks Jim!
I get what Jim is saying. I had pitched a story to the Nib that got in, dealing with my wife’s brain cancer during the pandemic. The editorial got to be too heavy at the wrong time. She was declining rapidly so I had to pull out. I still want to go back and do something with it but the tone and pitch will change. The whole thing took on a surreal almost spiritual experience. Sorry to hear about your buddy.
My Mom bought me a copy of Marijuana Man, and it's so much weirder than it sounds. It was a real wtf moment, but then I looked at the cover and was like, oh, Jim Mahfood, nice.
Such a great dude. Probably a decade ago now I managed to pick up the Frank Zappa cover of the Pop-Up Funk book. It’s set up next to my copies of Grr’l Scouts, Tank Girl, and a drum skin signed by MU-330 (an amazing St. Louis Ska band, you hosts look like you’d dig it.)
I have been a fan of Jim since a teenager. I had the 40 oz collection he mentioned from my local shop off the wall. So inspiring to hear this conversation! Really cool to learn about his journey in this fashion
the guy is a true one-off, incredible stylist, such confidence and great design sense. Futura 2000 x Sienkewicz x Steadman/Scarfe. His art (along with that of Choe and Josh Bayer too) has encouraged me to have some balls and draw gesturally. their styles are very different but Mahfood also reminds me of Biz - gestural, mixed media, pushes anatomy and proportion, big graffiti influence. IMAGINE IF SIMON BISLEY AND JIM MAHFOOD MADE A COMIC TOGETHER, IT WOULD BE FUCKIN NUTS.
