Thanks for watching. I tried to fix this trimmer but it had other plans for me.
Check the crank seals and carb mounting seals before condemning the carb. Thanks for the video.
great idea!
That trimmer is one of the best ones I’ve ever owned. Husqvarna is better than Stihl in my opinion. Husqvarna will run for a long time IF you take care of them properly.
The split shaft feature is, by far, the best feature of that trimmer.
Plus, service and repair parts are typically way cheaper than Stihl too.
Everyone has different experiences, but I’ve been working on these things since I was a teenager.
I think you have a bad “new” China carburetor. I’ve seen that before. It’s always 50/50 shot with China parts.
The other thing I’ve seen before is a faulty ignition coil. Rare, but it happens.
Good luck with the repair! If you decide to give up on it, I’ll take it! lol.
Take care.
thank you and all your ideas, are very appreciated
I’ve expressed my views working on trimmers, they’re nothing but nonsense. I stick with lawnmowers. Thx for sharing your frustration 👍
I know what you mean
i always check piston on 2 strokes to make sure im not working on a dead engine
I work on boats for a living, I also do some small engine repairs in my free time as a hobby and to make a few bucks. I think I'm pretty much done with working on handheld equipment and I will stick more to push mowers, tractors, etc. The handheld equipment can be such a pain to get right
thank you!
If I had to guess it could either be the carb or it's low on compression. Sometimes a machine can start ok but will fall flat on its face when put under a bit of strain. Normally I find that's low compression that does that
interesting way of putting but It makes sense, the next video will address it. thank you
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I've had a few machines start and run then once under a load it just can't handle it
it makes sense
Replace new carb with old one once you clean it up and rebuild with kit. That will let you narrow new carb is defective. If still no luck, try a leak down test on both carbs. Check compression, check gaskets for leakage of air. Block could be warped also. Too much smoke coming from exhaust too.
Good luck and I am confident you will prevail and educate us all!!!😊
you already read my mind!
Dang cliffhangers LOL
I know it man.
I'd tune it as good as I could get it and run it and get it hot and see how it did. I just worked on one of these and it was years ago and had a dead coil. The owner said that wasn't what was wrong so I told him that since he know what was wrong more than I did he could fix it himself.. I'm waiting to see what you did and Good week for you.
thank you and the next part chalk full of parts swaps and testing.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Waiting on it, Pal!
I had a similar experience the other day with my redmax that I found; it recently started to surge and wouldn’t respond to the throttle. I thought the engine was finally giving up until I started to take the air filter off to get to the carburetor.
When I got the air box off I realized the intake piece between the carburetor and the engine had play in it. Turns out all four screws were loose likely from vibration.
Tightening those screws fixed the trimmer but I need to replace the trimmer head on it. The head is worn out and becomes unbalanced when throttle is applied.
I learned 2 things that day:
1, when you find a piece of equipment always check ALL of the screws for any looseness and 2, sometimes the problem is caused by something completely unrelated to what you think is causing the issue.
Addendum: go OEM for parts if possible; if not check the reviews on aftermarket parts. Personally I don’t trust aftermarket stuff like carburetors but sometimes I have no choice but to replace it.
very good advice!
Yes I has that same problem with my FS 450 I changed the carburettor 3 times, spark plug, fuel filter and fuel lines, with an OEM parts and same after I reseal the crankshaft was then the problem was fixed
nice, I think you're on to something
You should do a pressure test and a vacuum test to determine the engines sealing capability
yes that's a great idea.
I've had a few of these over the years need new cylinder gaskets and/or crank seals. I feel like this might be the issue, since it seems to run up pretty good but won't idle. The kit for that isn't awfully expensive. It's also a super easy job to do with the engine design - last one I didn't even have to fully disassemble the case. Also, never discount the potential of the chinese plugs being the problem. Those L7Ts and several other versions of it can be problematic. I also keep a few NGK BPM8Y (I think) sitting around, and almost NEVER have a plug issue with them. It's an easy way to rule out the plug, instead of going down that rabbit hole (new doesn't always mean good). I rarely have issues with the aftermarket carbs, other than having to adjust them. The old carb didn't look bad, so worth a clean and quick swap as well to see if that's the issue.
thank you very much for the information, it was very helpful
exact same as the one I just repaired. make sure you are using a resistor spark plug. OEM.
think it was an RCJ8?? maybe..
thank you
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE let me know how it goes
The new carb is usually not the issue with these. I repaired one of these a month ago and find that the SEALING of the engine with the bottom end also has something to do with it including the gaskets in-between the block and the cylinder. They are cheap so try that first. The next would be the crankshaft seals. Again. Cheap. So try that also next
thank you very much
I literally just had the exact same trimmer 2 weeks ago. wouldn't run at all. I did everything I could. then, in the end. I replaced the spark plug with the correct one and it fired right up and ran great.
you are correct, the wrong spark plug will certainly have an unwanted affect on the engine
I have had this happen to me a lot in my shop. Sometimes you just get a bum carburetor right out of the box. I keep a bunch in stock and will often try another one if I suspect one is faulty. To me it sounds like the pump is not pumping. It might not be metering right either. I'd try another carb for simplicity sake, then go from there.
thank you and that's the plan, don't worry the next video goes from the simple to the complex stuff
Well if you wanted to test the carb then put it on another working trimmer and test it, if it works then it’s something to do with the engine itself
that's a good idea and you read my mind
You checked the spark arrestor was super oily. possibly partially blocked exhaust port. I’m repairing one of these now and a faulty ignition coil was my problem. Would some times start but timing was not advancing throttle trigger was completely unresponsive when it would start. The crankcase uses o-ring seals with regular crankshaft seals judging by the looks of this trimmer I would bet the seals are fine.
thank you for the advice, I really appreciate it.
Had this issue with a STIHL fs 38. It would run up to rpm and then coming down from rpm it would slowly die, almost like it was overheating. No matter what adjustments I did it still did it. So I pulled the carburetor down to the bare block. Let it sit in carb cleaner over night, but it all back together and it took right off.
nice work and thank you for the tip
I had the exact same problem with the exaxt same model. Would run fine for about 40 seconds then stop like i hit the kill switch. It is the spark plug. Mine had a new husqvarna plug in that the previous owner put in. Got frustrated and sold it yo me cheap. They require a resistor spark plug. Champion branded ones will start with"rc". Put a 4.99 plug in it and no problems since. Rcj6y was what i used. Try it and let us know. This was the first time i ran into this issue.
will do and thank you!
I've had this trimmer for years and encountered the dreaded spark plug issue. It has to be OEM or I found Champion from advanced auto parts works too.
Maybe the aftermarket carburetor ain't right this time thank you for the video
you might be right!
Why I love shindaiwa
good brand
Sounds like you have an air leak somewhere. Crank seals are where l would guess. Could also be the base gasket if it has one
that was my thought but when you see the next video, it should clear it up
On a previous video, I believe that you had a trimmer with bad seals, and it performed the same as this one. May just be dirt under a seal too. The trimmer does react when you adjust the carb. Time for a pressure test on the seals. Thanks.
great idea, thank you!
It could be something to do with the kill switch
interesting idea.
If the fuel is too low, it will suck air and interfere with fuel supply.
Fill the tank all the way, and then adjust the carburetor.
P.S. The original fuel looked like it had too much oil in it. That will make the fuel too thick to go through even the fuel filter and carb jets. Thus the original carb could've been cleaned instead of replaced.
thank you!
Leaky bearing seal/crank case seal.
that's a good possibility
Great video I have one it’s good what do you think about them
they are good, and I have a couple of these around but I don't care for them. The reason is I like the one I'm using now
Keep up the good work the knowledge is very helpful Did you want to sale that Honda lawn mower ?
thanks and no I'm keeping for right now
Have considered checking spark arrester?
yes in the next video we'll go thru the whole gambit of testing and inspecting
Idk if its just me or if its how Huskys sound bit it sounds like its stumbling every so often, maybe something with the ignition system like a coil on its way out or too much of a gap?
I know right, I think they just sound that way
Cool
Rarely seen in the wild around here
Stihls & hardware store brands
I just did a carb clean on almost exactly this same carb; new gaskets diaphragms etc
But now it won’t prime
Purge bulb stopped working
Nothing wrong with the fuel lines
Checked the accelerator pump etc etc
Nothing
Air leak? Checked for that. Doesn't seem to be
Today I'm wondering if the metering diaphragm is the cause
Is the stem too short?
Long way of saying I get your "questioning my abilities" statement 😅
change fuel lines around see if that helps ive had it happen before were it wouldn’t prime
sounds like it's going to be fun to fix
I've been there did that many times
it's quite frustrating when it happens
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE most definitely 👍
i would check piston to see if its scratched as ive had this exact outcome and the problem was the piston being badly scored
good idea
I just got a new toro 22 inch recycler used from my friend and it runs very high and sounds like it’s going to explode what should I do?
check and see if the governor arm is stuck. It could indicate that the throttle plate on the carb is stuck and not allowing the governor to control the engine speed.
Crank seals could be leaking?
could be
Woah. There's ethanol free gas in america?! in my country the lowest ethanol % is 15, and at the cheaper unknown gas stations its 20%.
Yes there is, but you have to search to find the stations that have them.
I've work on all brands of weedtrimmers with good success
that's good to know
This is a Shakespearesque tragedy!
I know what you mean
look if it has scored cylinder
that's the plan, thank you!
Neither. Add more fuel. Sounds like it's sucking air.
thank you
Why not take this chance for a teardown, maybe a gasket check and drill some more holes in the muffler where the spark screen is.
And try to run it longer because it happened too many times to me were it is acting funny but all it needed was to run.
a bit too soon for a full tear down, and don't worry the next video will address the other issues, thank you
Drilling holes in the muffler is not a good idea for many reasons.
@@MUUKOW3 I've been doing it for years and it doesn't hurt them and they rev higher and the spark screen cover hides and directs the extra holes
I would asume that the head bolts came loose?
that's what I thought but in the next video, you'll see that they hadn't
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE alright. I was going to guess stuck piston ring as my second guess lol
I was hoping that too, but unfortunately the compression is fairly high.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE well i guess ill have to wait and see what it was in the next video.
don't worry, I was rather stumped by this one too, in fact the video went a direction I've never gone before. It should be a week or 2 for the video
Never use ethanol gas never it's a big mistake
you are correct about that
Very informative trimmer repair video. Thanks for sharing. I noticed that you probaly used hipa carburetors and I'm wondering whether you're up for a collaboration.
