Yes, this is spot on! Archetypes are often more undisguised in popular culture, more evident in action films, operas and romcoms than in Virginia Woolf. If you see the same elements again and again in films, songs, novels, dreams, then there are archetypes, too. This is not arbitrary. Deserts, jungles, mountaintops, floods, the depths of the seas, journeys, as challenges or settings, are common archetypes, too. There are hundreds. We know them from myths, fairy tales, and folk songs, and evergreens. Propaganda tries to feed from archetypes - like using fire, blood, flags, marches, black, red, white, etc, in its arsenal. Snowwhite, the evil queen, the seven dwarfs with their work in the mines. Many of us who are fascinated by Jung's analytical psychology kind of feel elevated when we recognize these patterns. A world of not random elements... it is suiting for the mind and satisfying from both an ethical and esthetical point of view - if these things are important to you - and if they are, then you need them in your life, like if you've got an N in your personality type, or otherwise inclined towards being a creative or a dreamer. Congrats if you resolve a riddle from a personal dream with their help.

Try to find a copy of "the red book, a reader's edition" and finish off with "man and his symbols". I think "modern man in search of a soul" does a great job at explaining a lot of terms and concepts created by Jung (shadow, archetypes, complexes...) and " M,D,R" explains Jungs life, so it becomes helpful to comprehend how his books evolved with him through his life. What I really love about these lectures is how it is clearly important to Dr Peterson that he convey these ideas in a way that will aid his students in their transition to adulthood, rather than simply provide them with a notebook full of unconnected concepts. He reminds me quite a bit of one of my philosophy professors who, unsurprisingly, is also doing quite well for himself now.
Greetings from Lebanon Dr. Peterson, Thank you for sharing your wisdom, it’s a very enriching experience (full of insights). I would like to draw your attention to the origin of the word ‘nice’. From Latin (nescire = not know) to (nescius=ignorant), then old French /middle English (nice=stupid). It seems to me relevant to the discussion at the beginning of the lecture (8th min).
I love word origins. They can tell you a lot about they way people thought and viewed things in the past. One of my favorites is 'Fair'. It not only meant pale, but also meant the best, the most beautiful. Today it means mediocre.
Jihad Allam In America, men want “nice” woman and if you are disagreeable, it is not in your favor. The truth however, is it’s best as a woman not to be nice. Cordial, exchange pleasantries but never nice. ❤️🕺

I have watched hundreds of hours of JP's work as well as read all of his books multiple times. These kind of lectures, in my opinion, are where he shines brightest though. I understand he was dragged down to discuss political issues and all sorts of complicated topics but, to me, this is where his genius really is to be found. Crazy to think this was recorded only 7 years ago...
As of May of 2020 (quarantine times) 436000 of us have watched all of part of this lecture... how many cohorts would have had to go through the classroom to reach this number? Thankfully JBP made available in this way! Amazing!
My eyes teared up when he started talking about agreeableness and how it can stem from a childhood where the parental figure is aggressive. How to deal with an aggressive parent? I am still under their roof, starting my masters, in our culture it is difficult to leave the family nest before marriage. Have anybody any idea whether Peterson addressed in his lectures the more complex struggles living in an eastern society? Does anybody know whether he will launch one of his QnA soon? I'd love to ask him about this matter.
@@enzostark my therapist is a 2 hour drive away.. always a logistic hell to coordinate a proper time.. whenever i have the chance and the courage, I listen to Peterson
Wow. Listening to this lecture and I am @45:22 speaking about the eye of the king... I had the privilege of seeing Dr. Peterson live back in March and he spoke on the Beyond Order topic: "Notice that opportunity lurks where responsibility has been abdicated." He spoke about vision - the need for us to be present and watch what is going on. He spoke about vision to see hierarchy's and also that hierarchy's of values allow us to see, determine where to look and be present. What is most valuable at this point in time? In the lecture - he spoke of the Egyptian gods who fell due to not being present/having vision diverted. He has also spoken more recently about how the Bible is the foundation for truth to exist. For a long time the vision of America was based in the values derived from the Bible. Many would consider this as the reason is why the country was blessed, protected, and able to advance. We as a nation have had our collective vision diverted from the ancient wisdom and truth presented from this script. We are told it is ONLY a fairy tale. There is no value for it in modern society. I believe we are witnessing evil manifest and attempt to destroy the future of the nation, possibly attempt to destroy the world. World War 3? Women fighting to keep the "right" to slaughter their children. Young children are encouraged to destroy the portion of their selves that are used for procreation. People are encouraged into that relationships that do not contribute to the furtherance of the human species are acceptable. That relationships are temporary. It would almost seem to be almost intentionally destroying supply chains (keystone pipeline, a high number of shortages of different necessities like food and baby formula for example). We are seeing a devaluing the currency we trade upon and causing distrust. The media on both the far right and far left are sewing seeds of lies and distrust. Our currency is based on trust and faith that it can be used to trade. In the end times it is prophesied that a piece of bread will buy a bag of gold. What is your vision based on? Where do you feast your gaze? Are you seeking truth? Are you seeking the face of God? II Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Thank you Dr. Peterson, what I thought about when comes to the Anima and Animus are, that we have characters inside ourselves and these characters stems from real biological and historical substance. For all of these people inside you, you have to give them all meaning and purposes... meaning and purposes as a part of the whole. Lack of those would stem discontentment inside them. The discontent then would lead to all sorts of resistances or even sabotages of the others' purposes.
One question I had been thinking about was whether or not the storyteller-composer-artist understood at the time of composition the implications that arise out of the piece. JBP is so completely brilliant to be able to dissect these seemingly simple stories and archetypes into the complexity they really are. I’m being introduced to this method of thinking and even though I’m in over my head, I’m completely fascinated and can’t stop. So the answer to my question would be no, the composer would not necessarily know the complexity they are building into the structure of the story or depiction because it is not necessary for them to know why they intuitively know deep rooted concepts they, in fact, convey.
I have to say the philosophy of the shadow fascinates me. I want to learn more. It resonates with my spirit. I think if I am going to be whole as a person I need to embrace my shadow, understand it, work with it, know what I'm capable of good and evil, follow the good and keep the evil under control. It's interesting to look at Star Wars and observe the philosophy of the force vs the dark side. Every sith was controlled by their shadow, their anger. It would be interesting to see a sith who embraced the dark side, but wasn't devoured by the negative emotions, but harness their shadow. A dorky analogy, but intriguing. Thank you for posting your lectures. I am infatuated by Carl Jung philosophy and look forward to seeing future videos regarding this subject.
Jesse Knox Luke Skywalker was able to confront his shadow in episode 5 in that underground thing in Dagobah where he fought Darth Vader and saw his face in the mask when the face was exposed. Then in Episode 6 he used the power of his shadow to defeat Vader when Vader mentions Leia, but is able to control it so he doesn't kill Vader. That's why some people call Luke a grey Jedi since he incorporated aspects of the dark side such as anger (he also force choked gamoreans).
That was the first commercial I listened to on RUclips .... and I have been a contributor to Saint Jude for years...makes me feel good to do good .........Thank you for carrying on, Marlo..
According to Orwell’s book, coal miners additionally often had a long commute from their villages to the pit head before they even began their horrific underground journeys. Historically , women and children also worked down the coal mines, usually naked because of the intense heat. Can you imagine the kind of abuse these vulnerable individuals were subjected to under such conditions? Equal to or worse than slavery.
Small communities, husbands and wives working at the same pit, there could also be little that you could get away with without being ostracised from everybody you know - maybe stop inventing evil for which you have no evidence.

And it isn’t someone else’s problem. it isn’t other people who aren’t you .. it’s YOU. If you were there it would’ve been you.” I’ll let you reflect on that as i did
There is more to morality than acting out that which you can get away with. There exists an inherent ideal which can be achieved by incorporating the totality of personality that makes up the individual. It is the acknowledgment of the ability to commit horrendous actions, but making the decision to not act on them and instead embrace the innate virtue we as individuals possess.

Dr. Peterson's lectures are always amazing. Thank you, professor.
Thank you Mr. Peterson, you have inspired me to go to college and study with other real scholars.
That’s awesome brother 👏 he just inspired me to do the same !!! ☺️
What a privilege to be alive today, and be able to just pull this up and watch it whenever you want. Invaluable!

Jean- Jacque Rousseau; Thomas Hobbes on taking responsibility for self. Not blaming our past experiences or parents, the shortcomings challenge us to overcome traditions and embracing the now, tradition vs modernity. Thank you Prof Jordern Peterson , Carl Jung and Lion King. Not being nice to everyone safeguards the self and protects society.
I'm so stoked that I started listening to this man... My life and the lives of others, are better because of it... LONG LIVE JBP!!!!!!
Man I would love for JP to break down the chronicles of Narnia.
From memory I think he has touched on it. Not sure where. All I remember is him saying is the lion is a representation of god

@@danielfriend5635 lol! What a brilliant and unique insight!
I just watched both lectures on Jung in this series; masterful teaching, Dr. Peterson. Very engaging, and, indeed, very enlightening - this coming from someone who reads every bit of Jung I can get my hands on.
i want to start reading Jung, do you have any suggestions? how do i take it, what do i read first? and what do i expect?
@@mirnasrullahkhan6588 "memories, dreams and reflections" or "modern man in search of a soul" are good starts. I personally take notes while reading to ensure comprehension.
And finish with "man and his symbols" because it's the only book that he intented to be read by a general audience (non specialists) and is his final official piece of work (MDR was published after his death but was technically written by him ).
@@mirnasrullahkhan6588 Start with the essay by Jung "Approaching the Unconscious" in his Man and his Symbols. Then read Jolande Jacob's The Psychology of Carl Jung and then read Jung's Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious. Then you can read anything.
After finding out about professor's condition yesterday, it now makes it so much more difficult to watch this and not worry about him. Here is a man, who taught us the real meaning of life and purpose while he himself is at great pain. Please be okay, Professor. Please.
@@MrFloneil As of now, he's in rehab due to total physical withdrawal...

"Until you've practised being competent in a new domain, it's not yours. And so this clip is showing what is basically an eternal truth, which is that your territory is whatever you've mastered. And it's demarcated by everything you haven't mastered."
How kind is JP & his team to make this available for free for those who wouldn't be able to access such advice & guidance & wisdom to help themselves & others 🥺. And after 16yrs in childcare & following JP for 2 of them....I'm strongly realising I may have what it takes to take the steps to train & become a counselor to help people. I'll be honest with you, I never had that thought before listening to JP & his passion for helping people, that same passion, I have. I hate people suffering. Ive recently sat with myself & noted I have the EQ to definitely sit some training & see where it takes me. All this inspiration I believe started with whoever led me to watch JPs talks 🙏 there's many reasons I believe this may be for me. And I will forever be thankful to JP for being such an inspiration ❤️ I'm aged 36
Peterson,
Thank you for sharing your wisdom, it’s a very enriching experience (full of insights).
@@Dude0000 Kind of you to say so
Hope you are doing better Mr. Peterson,
We all are grateful for your thorough lectures and we miss you
Hello,
I'm a songwriter and mental health support worker from England and am also very interested in the work of C.G Jung and Mircea Eliade
Have been enjoying your series on Personality very much over the past few weeks - Really great!

These lectures have helped me to understand myself so much better. Thank you Dr. Peterson for helping me to deal with all the pain I'm in. By understanding myself better I have been able to face my problems in a healthier way and change things about myself that were hurting me that I had been totally oblivious of before. I've fallen off the wagon but fortunately coming back here and listening to what you have to say has refreshed me in a way and I've been able to find my sense of direction again.

How many times I'll have seen "Groundhog day" and never saw the meaning underlying the plot in the way Jordan Peterson explains here. Brilliant.
Alfter this lecture I went to see, once again, the opening of The Lion King. Not ashamed to say that I cried quite a lot, I felt everything Dr Jordan Peterson said during his lecture. So powerfull
That Groundhog Day analysis really made me question my own days. Just wow. Thank you.
Currently 2 weeks into reading carl jungs "the undiscorvered self" these lectures certainly help being able to understand the jung lense so to speak.
I have watched hundreds of hours of JP's work as well as read all of his books multiple times. These kind of lectures, in my opinion, are where he shines brightest though.
I understand he was dragged down to discuss political issues and all sorts of complicated topics but, to me, this is where his genius really is to be found.
Crazy to think this was recorded only 7 years ago...

you inspire me to think macroscopically in a political sense
Such valuable information embedded in this story. Thank you for making it much more understandable Jordan!
As of May of 2020 (quarantine times) 436000 of us have watched all of part of this lecture... how many cohorts would have had to go through the classroom to reach this number? Thankfully JBP made available in this way! Amazing!
I LOVE these older lectures. They seem less forced than his newer material.
God bless this man. May his speeches of wisdom be remembered forever and integrated to our human evolution of higher consciousness and pure love.
Realizing and coming to terms with our limitations can be liberating.
Professor really dropped some absolute gems. Thanks you so much.
He did launch some, if you can reach him, reaching any other local physiologist can help to!

Wow. Listening to this lecture and I am @45:22 speaking about the eye of the king...
I had the privilege of seeing Dr. Peterson live back in March and he spoke on the Beyond Order topic:
"Notice that opportunity lurks where responsibility has been abdicated."
He spoke about vision - the need for us to be present and watch what is going on.
II Timothy 2:15
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Endlessly fascinating - thanks so much Dr Peterson.

YOU inspire me to be a better person! keep up the good work
Thank you Dr.
Jesse Knox
Luke Skywalker was able to confront his shadow in episode 5 in that underground thing in Dagobah where he fought Darth Vader and saw his face in the mask when the face was exposed.
Mind-blown, it felt like I got therapy myself for the recent emotions I was facing

Hey guys,
It may be somewhere in the comments, but just found the movie about Hitler, which Jordan refers to: Triumph of the Will by Leni Riefenstahl.
I have no words, Jordan Peterson gives extraordinary lectures
According to Orwell’s book, coal miners additionally often had a long commute from their villages to the pit head before they even began their horrific underground journeys.
Historically , women and children also worked down the coal mines, usually naked because of the intense heat.
Can you imagine the kind of abuse these vulnerable individuals were subjected to under such conditions?
Equal to or worse than slavery.
16 tons, and what do you get? Another day older, and deeper in debt.
I've always thought this.
Small communities, husbands and wives working at the same pit, there could also be little that you could get away with without being ostracised from everybody you know - maybe stop inventing evil for which you have no evidence.
I did ayahuasca and found out first-hand how much these assertions are spot-on correct.
Same with me my friend
Me too
An outstanding RUclips channel
I paid 30k at mediocre quality to learn what JP posts for free
Very deep, a very good lesson for life.
Jordan Peterson is a great Sophist and Teacher.
Dear Dr. Peterson, I know you are very busy. You may not get to read this, but, I am discovering a lot about childhood neglect and how an absent father effected my development and my personal choices at large. You are such a trusted resource for me with your lectures. Perhaps you might recommend some reading for people like me? I know so many in my peer group with this similar history. Perhaps we group together for comfort and sympathy. I would be very interested to hear what you have to say on this matter. I remain, an avid listener. Thank you.
Do some therapy.
God bless this man with health and sanity .
Biggest advantage for us to having internet now comparing to our parents which didn’t had it ist opportunity to hear great people lectures without opportunity actually going to College.
Thank God for Jordan B Peterson 🙏
I could listen to him talk about Jung for days.
“Because we know that the shadow of ideological possession is repression and death” can’t penetrate much deeper than that 😬
I paused at 3:20. Now I realize the videos I ve hard time to follow are older than 4-5 years. Do you realize how J Peterson has improved as a speaker? He really embodies what he s preaching. Well, everything is said.
@52:20 “The human race will continue to be plagued by phenomena like the outbreak of genocidal nazis and Soviet ideologies until the people realize that the Soviets and the nazis are THEM. And it isn’t someone else’s problem. it isn’t other people who aren’t you .. it’s YOU. If you were there it would’ve been you.” I’ll let you reflect on that as i did
Would love to be sat in one of his lectures writing notes. This topic is soo interesting.
13:15 Kind of eerie watching Peterson explain this given what has now become of him
"The Road to Wigan Pier" is a book by the English writer George Orwell, first published in 1937.
Gonna have to read that.
LONG LIVE JORDAN PETERSON!!

When you genuinely give up all your concrete connections with the world, you achieve an ego death; the true self can only be achieved by sacrifice. This process is on another plane of consciousness.
