The Easiest Way to Keep Your CPAP Gear Clean & Dry

  • I finally talked my dad into ditching his SoClean ozone cleaner, but he wasn't looking forward to washing his CPAP equipment by hand now. So I walked him through my process. It's easy! 5 simple steps once a week, and it only takes about five active minutes of cleaning and an hour-and-a-half of doing whatever else you wanna do.
    1) Load your gear into a plastic kitchen basin and bring it to the sink.
    2) Dump your humidifier reservoir, put some Dawn in your hose and sprinkle some around the basin (and maybe a bit of white vinegar once a month) and fill the basin with hot water.
    3) Go do something else for half an hour.
    4) Rinse your gear and (optional) put it in a Hurricane CPAP Dryer.
    5) Wait for it to dry.
Equipment you need for my process:
    1) A good kitchen basin, which you can buy at Amazon: amzn.to/3dIsB9I
    2) A Hurricane CPAP Dryer: amzn.to/3qUYCks
Other gear mentioned herein: Dishwasher-safe reservoir for ResMed AirSense 10: amzn.to/3AwsQOP (the regular one is not dishwasher-safe).
You might also want to get some CPAP wipes to clean your machine weekly, and also your mask daily if you don't want to wash it: amzn.to/3jOVWmL
(As an Amazon Associate, I might earn a few pennies here and there from qualifying purchases.)
Your mask may look a little different and you might not have washable filters (ResMed machines don't), but otherwise, you can follow along with us and get your hose and mask and reservoir nice and clean once a week.
By the way, check out the damage that ozone has done to my dad's mask. And it's only a few months old! Also, his humidifier reservoir (only about six months old) was covered in a film of grime and gunk. Yeah, SoClean had killed the bacteria, but their tiny corpses were still hanging around, waiting to be inhaled. Ick!
    Chapters:
    0:00 Intro
    0:13 Opening credits
0:28 What are ozone cleaners like SoClean and how do they work?
1:05 Philips is using ozone as a scapegoat for #foamgate, but ozone is still bad
1:33 How often should you deep-clean your CPAP gear?
    1:55 Daily cleaning and maintenance
2:14 Some stuff you might want to make CPAP cleaning quicker and easier
2:49 What if you don't want to buy stuff?
3:00 CPAP gear comes in all shapes and sizes. Yours may not look like mine.
3:30 Step 1) Gather up your hose, mask, humidifier reservoir, and your filter if it's washable.
4:02 Step 2) Dump out your reservoir, disassemble your mask, put some Dawn in your basin and some in your hose, and fill the basin with hot soapy water.
    5:41 Step 3) Wait 30 minutes.
5:51 Step 4) Rinse out your hose and plug it into the Hurricane Dryer. Rinse out your reservoir and put it inside the coil of your hose. Rinse out your mask and reassemble it. Connect it to the hose.
10:45 Step 5) Turn on your Hurricane Dryer and go do something else for an hour.
    11:09 Summary
11:50 Setting a schedule and sticking to it is important!

Hey Dennis! I enjoy and learn a lot from you videos. This time I have to disagree with your advice… Every component comes with clear instructions as to use mild soap an luckewarm water, never hot “toasty…They recommend baby shampoo or free & clear dishwashing detergent, Dawn is way too harsh, I use Seven Generation. Otherwise your cleaning routine is perfect! My humble opinion…

    • @AdventureswithCPAP
      @AdventureswithCPAP  3 года назад +11

Hey Susana! Thanks for chiming in. You're not wrong, of course. All of the CPAP manufacturers recommend mild soap, and Dawn is technically on the strong side. If I may, though, allow me to defend my recommendation for using Dawn for my dad.
Most people, I've discovered, aren't properly cleaning their CPAP gear. And the lower we can get the barrier to entry on regular, thorough cleaning, the more likely they are to do it. My dad, for example, was all in on buying a Hurricane CPAP dryer. That's fine. It's a one-time purchase, like ripping off a bandage.
But if someone told him he needed to buy some special soap every month? Nope. I can tell you with all certainty that he would forget to order it, then just stop cleaning his mask and hose and reservoir.
Dawn is easy. It's there. Everybody likely already has a bottle handy, and they're likely to buy it immediately when it's running low, because they use it for dishes and probably hand-washing, too.
Granted, I've only been at this since February, and I admitted in my first video that I was going to make some mistakes. But I've been cleaning my gear with Dawn since Day One, and it hasn't caused any issues yet! I haven't noticed any build-up, nor any deterioration of the silicone.
That said, again, you're absolutely correct. If you want to go by manufacturer's recommendations 100%, Seventh Generation is great detergent! But it's also half-again as expensive, and I just don't think my dad would switch over to it permanently for all his other washing needs.
PS: Never be humble about your opinions. Share 'em loud and proud!

    • @AdventureswithCPAP
      @AdventureswithCPAP  3 года назад +15

Susana, I just wanted to let you know that your comment stuck with me. You've changed my mind. I have switched over to Seventh Generation for all of my equipment cleaning. Dunno if I'll convince my dad to do the same, but you changed one person's mind, at least. :)

@@AdventureswithCPAP Great news Dennis! I was very cautious when I sent you my message, I did not want to offend you at all, I I respect your opinions and like I said before I enjoy and learn a lot from your videos. I use the ResMed full mask with memory foam, which I’m supposed to replace every 30 days. Because of the way I clean my headgear my mask and my tubing as long as I have no leaks I keep on using it sometimes up to six months! My buddy The Lanky Lefty recommended the Hurricane Dryer. I have been using one since my third month. So Clean and otherboxone devices struck me as insane, dangerous, and not effective at really cleaning. So it has been COAP soap and the dryer for me. Distilled water ONLY. On a completely different track I bought a battery backup and have never regretted the purchase. During a power outage I just mask up and go to sleep. The two most important accessories as far as I am concerned.

I found the best solution for drying...
I found something called Electric Balloon Pump. As you can guess, it's designed to blow up balloons with air. Its about 6x8x5 inches. There are two ports.
It's so powerful and dries the p10 hose in less than 5 minutes. The 6' hose takes a bit longer, maybe 10 mins. It dries 'mostly' then I hang it up where it finishes drying on its own. It's a little loud but is so quick I don't mind.
I paid $7.99 at the goodwill, it is $16 online

I use dawn and rubbing alcohol to clean my tubing and reservoir and also made a a scrubber with the head of a Childs toothbrush ,Then to dry the tubing i put about an inch of 70% isopropyl alcohol and move the pipe up and down so the alcohol reaches all the surface inside then leave it to evaporate. Then if necessary use an electric pc mini blower to blow it out and dry completely. Absolutely spotless and never had a problem.

Thank you Dennis for your very informative video. I’ve been using the Phillips Dreamstation 2 since last year and I love it! I found your video because I wanted to find a easier way to dry my tubing out instead of hanging it in the bathroom(YUCK) on a plastic hanger. Then you mentioned this thing called a ‘hurricane dryer’? Not that that I need another gadget. But this is useful. Pricey. Going to purchase one now. But useful. I can dry and keep all my equipment together. And………I like that you mentioned the use of white vinegar for disinfecting your hose. Also, I purchased CPAP mask wipes and a hose hanger. How come I didn’t know about these things before? Again? Thank you for the awesome information. I look forward to more of your videos. And I did like your page. 🤗👍🏾

I have the ResMed AirSense 10, a nasal pillow and a heated hose. I put 2 hooks on the back of my office door which is always open. I wash the nasal pillow with 2 drops of dish detergent and rinse the water tub every morning and place them on a plastic placemat covered with a small towel to dry. The headgear hose and air tubing I hang on the hooks on the back of the door. Twice a week, I put a few drops of dish detergent into the hoses, hold one end firmly against the faucet and rinse them. I hang them in the shower for an hour or so and then they get hung on the back of the office door for the day. And 2 times a week I wash the water tub and place that open next to the nasal pillow to dry. The whole process only takes minutes.

Have you ever tried alconox or tergazyme? I never even tried using dish detergent or anything like that. What I do is I get my sink spotless with normal dish soap, then fill it up with hot bleach and let it sit for several minutes. I drain that out rinse thoroughly. Then I fill with hot tergazyme. I soak for 10 minutes or so. Alconox will get it 90% clean without scrubbing, but I found some biofilm of some kind was still left behind... Tergazyme seems to get it 100% clean without any scrubbing, and does no damage! Magical stuff. Just make sure you use good gloves!

  • @guysolis5843

I clean my items quite a bit differently. First I scrub out the sink then fill it with water, a small squirt of Dawn and a splash of white vinegar. I put everything in the basin and use another container to pour the soapy water through the hose. I never put straight soap on anything, it has to be diluted to ensure it rinses out easily. Let soak for 30 min then rinse everything out and pour clear water through the hose. I don't have a separate machine to dry so I hand dry everything and to get the inside of the hose dry I snake it. I drop a line through the hose so it sticks past by a full length of the hose then tie a clean cloth I trimmed down then pull it through the hose a few times then let it dry the rest of the way by itself...I've had hoses that I allowed to hang with the one end up and the other down and it still had major droplets in it after 2 days...bacteria grows in that environment.

One of the reasons I put off cleaning the hoses (both my husband and I have ResMed machines) is they take so long to dry. I shake them, hang them up, and I've even tried to blow down them with a hairdryer, but it takes days to dry. As others have said, there's a danger of mould when they are damp. Our house is cold in Winter, so that makes it an even longer wait. The only answer is to buy new hoses and wash the old ones, do a swap, so it can take all the time it needs. The other reason I wait so long is the time and trouble getting the hoses off the machine - they are all covered with zip covers and attached down the back of furniture. It's a real pain taking them off and replacing them!

I use a Kleenex for my filter. I put my mask in the dishwasher once. No more mask. I prefer the Mirage Quattro I use wipes to clean the mask. I am not cleaning hoses and I don't use the water reservoir, however, distilled water shouldn't be causing grime in your reservoir. Also, only air that has been filtered through a Kleenex goes through my hose. The exhaled air doesn't go back into where air is blowing out, so that shouldn't get dirty. And yes, Ozone is very bad. Especially to breathe it, which I am sure those Ozone cleaners leak ozone into the rooms they're being used in.

Just a note about just draping the hose over something, is that while the outside dries quickly, the inside will remain moist for a very long time. Even the entire day or more (depending on ambient humidity).
The thing is, that's long enough for invisible fungus and bacteria to grow and stick to the inside of the hose.
    NOT GOOD.
Having some kind of air-controlled dryer is a good idea.
For those with 3D printers, you can either design a dual-dryer WITH FILTER or go to thingiverse and there's a few there. But I wouldn't suggest any that don't have a filter insert area.

    • @BlondieSL
      @BlondieSL Год назад +1

Well, 3 weeks later and I did it! LOL
Yup, I built a washer and a dryer!
I had to design a canister on our 3D printer to hold the air filter so that air would go through the filter, from the air pump to filter out anything in the air, but also to filter out any carbon that comes off the motor's brushes (until I can change the motor for a brushless motor).
For the washer, I just took a little water pump from a water fountain, lowered the pressure and designed an adapter on the 3D printer that connects to the pump on one end and right into the hose end of the ResMed heated hose.
I set this in a plastic tub with a few drops of Palmolive and let the water pump through and around all the parts.
After that, drain and dry the tub, then connect the air filter/pump.
      Works a charm.
Just mentioning this in case anyone who is inventive wants to give this a try.

    • @Motojourneys
      @Motojourneys Год назад +1

@@BlondieSLdo you have a parts list and 3d plans available?

    • @BlondieSL
      @BlondieSL Год назад

@@Motojourneys Sorry, no. I haven't created a list of parts and as for the 3D parts, I haven't put them on any site.
I'm not sure that my design will just work for everyone.
The parts are very specific and a one-off, I'd say.
But basically, not including the timer controller part, I had to make some fittings to be able to connect the hose to the water pump and fittings to connect the hose to the air pump (dryer)... the end that would insert into the machine.
I ran into an issue with the air pump, however.
The one I bought had an AC brushed motor in it. Besides being way too powerful and noisy, it sucked a lot of electricity. About 90 watts!!!
The brushes that make the motor turn, would also slowly produce carbon dust.
So I had to design a filter to go between the air pump and the hose.
That's not something I could possibly put on a site as the filter cartridge may not be available everywhere.
But people who have a 3D printer and some design skills, could use TinkerCad to make some sort of a housing for whatever small filter cartridge they can find.
As for the air pump, I do need to mention that the motor that it had just wan't not good for this project.
So I bought a 2nd air pump (same model) to use as a test to redesign it.
I ended up removing the AC motor and putting in a small (tiny) computer server fan. Very small, but very powerful.
I had to redesign how it mounted since the air pump housing was not designed for this.
But I got it to fit with some mods to mount it properly.
It runs on 12V, but again, it's a very powerful tiny fan, so I added a BUCK converter with an external potentiometer to control its speed. I mounted the potentiometer so that it stuck out the side and easy to get to.
I used a 12V adapter that I have (12V DC, 1 Amp - switching wall wart type) to power it.
Of course, I added a socket to plug the adapter into the pump rather than direct wired.
This now works well and with no brushes from the AC motor, no fear of carbon being pushed into the hose and mask.
Sadly, I don't do RUclips videos, so I couldn't possibly go through my build process.
I'm still working on the timer as I went from doing a basic quicky timer to a more elaborate device.
I'm using an Arduino with a Nextion display, a mechanical relay, double pole with its coil being 5V, low mA so that Arduino can control it directly. That goes on the other side of an SSR (solid state relay).
On the Nextion display, I designed the main page to select:
      - Wash
      - Rinse
      - Dry
There's also a "settings" option so that the times for each mode could be selected and saved for next time (5 mins to 120 mins).
The way it works it touch "Wash" and it turns on the water pump and turns it off automatically after the selected time (usually 15 mins).
Then, I would dump out the soapy water, rinse out the tub, put in fresh water, put the hose, mask, water hold and parts into the tub, reconnect the water pump and then select "Rinse". Again, this automatically turns off the water pump after XX mins.
I think I'll also add a buzzer to this.
Then, I dump the water, using a clean towel, dry off the outside of the hose, maks and parts. I now connect the air pump, through the air filter, to the hose. The mask is connected to the hose so its inside gets dried.

( except on my main tubing between deep cleaning ) I also noticed yellowing on my silicone mask parts.... On your video, you say "would need to be replaced" .. Is it only a Color issue or it does something else to the silicone ? I really wonder why it doesn't that. I made myself DIY a similar UV light system like the Lumin that I use more in between the Deep water/soap cleaning. Lots of my masks, yes had yellowed, looks permanent, but I can't afford to buy more than one per year because of my 200$ annually insurance policies coverage. I use them in alternance to avoid having the same pressure all the time on my nostrils. You have an idea if there is a trick to put them back clear again ? Just use natural soaps to clean things like your grandma did.
Dawn Soap is owned by multinational conglomerate Proctor & Gamble and contains Sodium Laurel Sulfate.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are common ingredients that cause shampoos, cleansers and toothpastes to foam. They remove oil effectively but can cause dryness and skin irritation. Of greater concern is the manufacturing process used to turn sodium lauryl sulfate into sodium laureth sulfate, which creates the byproduct 1,4-dioxane-a known animal carcinogen and probable human carcinogen that is also suspected to be toxic to the kidneys and respiratory system. Because of these concerns, some manufacturers have replaced SLS and SLES with sodium coco sulfate.

(I have very oily skin).
Mind you, this is with soaking my nasal interface every day and washing everything once a week.

You can! I might need to make a video about how I do it. That won't require sitting! 🤣
Basically, what you have to do is reverse the hose. Since the heated hose has a specified input and output end, you'd think you would plug the bit that goes into your CPAP into the hose drier of the Hurricane. Nope! You connect the mask end to the hose drier, then just slot the elbow from your mask into the wrong end of the hose. It won't lock tight, but it'll stay securely enough to dry it.

Baby shampoo or something much milder is safer, but unless you're trying to make your components last forever and never replace them it's not likely to make a huge difference- they're due for replacement before the Dawn would destroy them, but it could definitely shorten their potential lifespan if you don't replace them as scheduled.

@@tracy3066, ugh! I checked the CPAP Supply USA page on Amazon (they're one of few providers through Amazon that I trust), and it appears that the Simplus is one of the few F&P masks they don't carry.

I sure hope so, friend! I’ve got several I want to do, and now that I’m able to sit, I just need to find the time! I started a new podcast recently and that’s eating up a lot of free time, but I have two CPAP videos in different stages of planning!
