Thank you for the video. I started fishing for them last year, and love it...it gets crowded mid season tho...I hot smoked them and they taste awesome for me ( Slavic people love fish like herring) best was pressure canned, slightly smoked ...learned canning fish from your video my friend...
Awesome. Cool to see it so uncrowded there. They make great crayfish bait too. Those are starting to pick up to. Would be cool to see you do some crawfishing.
I've only shad fished twice in my life...1st time was on the upper Delaware river in NJ over 50 years ago with my dad, fishing exactly like you were with an ultralite spinning rig and red/white shad dart. The last time was with a fly rod on the American river near Sacramento 5 days ago on a large red/white midge...they fight well for a small fish.
I have fished shad up intel the 4th of July have always done well but need to fine the right depth. That late in the run I bring home about 30. Still first part of July 25k to 30k are still running over the dam. most of the time I'm there 2nd or 3rd weekend of June they are on fire at that time. at times 300k per day over dam. Last year over 7 million. I use 1/2oz to 1oz. Most of the time I use 3/4oz with 3 to 5 foot leader need to have a 9 foot pole for 5 foot leader. Many people will use 1oz to 2oz and cast to fare up river will snag the rocks or your line they just do not learn. I cast at 11oclock as far as I can go out in the river count to 15 to 20 seconds before I start my reeling. if the water is not moving as fast I only count 12 to 15 seconds. When my line is at 3oclock I reel in fast. Most of the time when I use 1oz lead I fish for the big females. They tend to be deeper then most. the water needs to be moving to go deep and when I hook then I know becouse they do not want to come up at first they stay deep you my think you have a small salmon at first. STAY SAFE AND HAVE FUN !!!!
Hello I'm great to watching this video. I live in SF California I like to fishing shad at American river and Sacramento river. When is best time to shad fishing over there, one of friend live Portland I went up end of may last year. He doesn't know about fishing. Please give me a information. Thanks
Brewster pool question, I have been watching several of your Vids today about fishing the Brewster Pool and I was wondering if the Sockeye and King salmon hold up in the pool at the same time.
Those things make the best crab bait! Might have to visit the family next weekend and happen to stop for some shad fishing ;) Did you move to Portland or something? Your usual videos are in central WA.
Got a few the other day. Going back around noon

Looks like a ton of fun!
They are way bigger than I thought they would be.

How many fish did you catch over their limit
There is no limit.

i caught 30+ pounds of shad today it was pretty good
Awesome!
Sometime you will get lucky and hook a salmon out there while fishing for shad. I'm surprised that area hasn't been flooded with people back to back.
I did hook a springer. It nearly spooled me before I decide to bust it off
Nice. I grew up next to the Ct River. Shad fished starting at 5 years old. Old video as usual
Are you able to catch chinook from shore there by the dam?
Yes
How heavy was the sinker? You didn't mention that in your video (or I just missed it).
1/4 oz
I agree on the weather! I think age has a lot to do with it 😬

Best time for shad on the Willamette is from mid-May to early July
@@spiltmilt Thanks, you mention that don't need license even like me Cal residence too?
@@hansungyungable im pretty sure you need a license for shad in oregon. I would email/call the odfw and ask.
Try an old fashion black and white daredevil, loose a lot less gear and they love it . I think they're same fish we call goldeneye.
Not the same species at all.
Brewster pool question, I have been watching several of your Vids today about fishing the Brewster Pool and I was wondering if the Sockeye and King salmon hold up in the pool at the same time.
Yes same time. July through August
@@spiltmilt Thank you for the quick response as always
