Just moved to Sacramento a year ago, this was perfect information for a novice fisherman looking to learn new technique for new waters! Much appreciated!
This is a great video. It'll help people from all over the state come and fish for shad. Yeah, this sort of video is exactly what we need to ensure people know just where to fish and how to do it. I bet hundreds if not thousands of fishermen will come to fish there. This video is a great idea.
Bobber fishing for shad on the AR is enormous fun. I am lucky enough to live right there in Fair Oaks. When that bobber suddenly gets sucked underwater - thunk - and then you get a glimpse of those silver shimmering fish. My favorite thing to fish for. Great fun with a fly rod, too. Awesome video guys!
I caught some Shad at that same spot almost 30 years ago. Was just a kid and my Dad wandered off to get something from the car and I hooked one of those suckers. Thing fought like a 8lb Steelhead even though it might have been 8 inches long at most. Good times. That and the old Nimbus salmon runs with the water overrunning the parking lot and more salmon than pavement.
Thank you Nick! I have been fishing sunrise rather unsuccessfully and now I see why! I have been a fan for a long time and I have to say this video has helped me more than any other. Keep up the great work and tight lines!
Shad fishing here in CT is usually between April to June. The American shad come into our river systems to spawn and get away from the stripers. I just started to fish for Shad this year. My first Shad went 3 lbs 2 oz. My PB was just over 4 lbs. there's a lot of bigger shads here in the northeast. The method I used to catch them was with a willow leaf. You rig it on a sorta of a Carolina rig. Half oz weight. And then a big leader, followed by the willow leaf. You cast, let it sink and reel it in. Man, they fight so amazing! Especially the rows, female Shad. We call them the poor mans Tarpon because of all the acrobatics they do. I fell in love with Shad fishing this year. Can't wait for the run next season.
fished those places plus an extra area yesterday. didn't get anything, and sunrise was over running with floaters and swimmers - Saturday... what'd I expect ? any chance on fishing with you in the future ?
Lol you got your “barbless pinch downs” because that is the law in the river right there. It was cool to make it seem like you are doing it just to be nice but the viewers should be told it’s a barbless section only in case they do go fish there.
crush the barb of the hook or use barbless hooks on the american river.. year around..its the law, less damage to the fish and easier to release them..you are not tearing them apart trying to release them
Can anybody recommend a good fish finder for Kayak? Am on a $400 budget. Was looking at the Lowrance Hook 5. But Helix 5 is $120 less, and Helix 5 KVD is $20 more. But has side imaging, plus been looking at other brands as well. Really wanna get the best bang for my buck here. So any help is much appreciated.
when ever I catch american shad I cut them up and chum them for stripers. and when I catch a female shad during spawn I rack the scales off of them and the male shad bunch up and it makes them really aggressive. perfect for stripers. great video bro.
+jon garrigus your not really gonna find a lot of schools of stripers but usually some big ones go up when the shad start spawning. and if you find a group of shad look in the back of them and most of the time there's. a big striper laying under a rock waiting for something to swim by. my biggest on the american this year has been a good 15lbs. broke one off that was a good 20 probably. big fish are always in the river you just have to find them.

Only if that is the longest it get in the thumbnail , & if Scientist's will mess with there DNA replacing Plakat or Short Fin Betta fish eauty was in the Shad's getting rid of the aggression .Then can have Chocolate color with Plakat tail and fin's as in short enough to where they might nit tare their tail , and fin's off piece by piece maybe .

Love your respect for nature... It's what separates the HUNTERS and the FISHERMEN from the TAKERS
I watch this every year before Shad season. Best video out there. I was lucky to meet Matt several times while Shad fishing!
same
Thanks so much first time shad fishing and hooked 1 because of your tips
Slip bobber always always gets the job done. No other method mimics such a natural presentation 👍

Awesome video!!
Thats really funny i go to that part of the river all the time
Very nice video. Where is the place along American River? Tried Sacramento before, and plan to fish in American River this summer.
I was out today. My buddy mich #22 never pulls in less that 22 inchs or 22 fish. Away find him fishing the early westerly winds!
Thank you👍🏻
Looks like. Hickory shad at 1:12
Not light but one hell of a rod. Pulled in a 5-6ft sturgeon no problem paired with an 8500 reel. Tip is fast enough to see even the small bites.
Ya when my Lady is in her back she calms right down also how wierd 😂
there good catfish bait
Congratulations on 80 K !!
I’ve stood on that bridge and seen huge stripers swimming behind schools of shad eating them.
Good video
im gonna use those for stripes!!!
Hey Nick shuld I get the Dodyns Fury or the Powell Inferno rod?
fished those places plus an extra area yesterday. didn't get anything, and sunrise was over running with floaters and swimmers - Saturday... what'd I expect ?

That first Shad was perfect striper bait size! You guys are horsing those fish in. I always play with mine more. It’s fun on a long flexible rod!

InformativeFisherman, I'm curious does it matter about brands of hook using for fishing?

Nice video! Very informative! Haha all about the name right?!
Lol, you got it bro!
Bass snacks
