I never kept Shad until about 4 years ago when I came across a pickling recipe by RUclipsr age of Anderson. Nowadays, I keep 10 Shad and thats plenty enough.
I keep shad for bait as well. I have a cooler that says “SHAD” because once you use something to carry dead shad, it’s pretty much worthless for anything else.
I use shad darts in the 1/16 oz size. Green/chartreuse, red/chartreuse, red/white have been my go to colors. My dad hooked a chinook last season at Bonneville, hook bent out same as yours, and he lost it. I love how hard the shad fight!
Been fishing for shad sent 1989. Always have a great time. One year over 7 million through the dam. Largest run of shad in the world. I have caught them on the 4th of July. will be there 2 or 3 times this year. Stay safe.
Awesome fishing day man, love your positivity 🤩! I'm glad to see that those other fishermen do not bother you even though it is obviously seen that they were trying too💯! Loved the video💙, keep them coming👍! Watching you all the way from Kazakhstan 😉🖐
I love shad fishing!! I started using bobbers for shad about 10 years ago, it’s a whole lot of fun. Just cheap bobbers and whatever jig you want. Just have to stay away from the crowd. It’s definitely helped with losing gear though
@@NWfishin I usually start at about 3-4 feet and stay somewhat close to shore. I start moving it deeper after a handful of drifts. Sometimes it takes a bit to find the fish.
Fished the Bonneville back in ‘70-‘80’s for shad with my grandpa. Picked up a peculiar way of fishing for them from the Vietnamese. He would pickle and can them. Better than canned tuna.
@@spiltmilt I’m probably just reminiscing. I can remember driving to Sherars Bridge on the Deschutes River from Hood River in the old ‘53 Chevy eating canned fish on crackers. We kept the Pike Minnows and everyone called us crazy. Grandpa canned them up also.
They are very good crab bait. We run half and half in our bait boxes of shad and chicken, the seals don’t seem to tear up the traps like they do if you use salmon or steelhead heads. Springers this year was dismal. 3 trips and landed only one. Total of two take downs, 3 losses and one landed in 3 trips. Tight lines!
This was interesting. I have been meaning to fish below Bonneville for shad but haven't been able to get away to do it. It looked like a blast. Nothing like fish in abundant numbers that are super willing to hit a lure. I was interested to see you fishing the Okuma lightweight rod as I recently bought one except it is 6'6" instead of the 7'6". It seemed to work good for you which makes me feel good about my choice. Thanks for the video.
I enjoyed this video and it is certainly timely. I have two questions. 1. Would Shad (chunks or strips) be a good bait for bottom fishing for Lings? 2. If you were in a boat that launched from Scappoose where would you go for Shad? Thanks
Yes!!! They work great for bottom fishing! Some friends and I used to have a shad fishing trip so we had bait for our summer trip to Barview, OR. We would use them for crab bait and bottom fishing.
What's the farthest up-river toward the tri-cities that you can go to reliably find shad to catch right now? Thinking of taking the kids over from the Palouse to get some action, but Boneville is a long ways. I do have a boat, but shore would be preferable so I don't have to take the boat.
When i think of Shad i think of little dinks. I was told when the shad run the big Sturgeon bite then. Do you ever see the Shad come flying out of the water like Something chasing them?
Nice! I miss shad fishing on the American, I didn’t realize there was a good run here. Any advice on merwin right now? I went out there last weekend and only caught pikeminnow, I didn’t talk to anyone who caught a kokanee.
When I first watched this video I swear he said that a fishing license wasn't required for Shad in WA. Not sure if he uploaded a new version with that clipped out or I was just hearing things, but after researching you do in fact need a valid license (unlike for carp and smelt). So, if like me you were planning on taking the whole family to go fish without licenses, you might want to re-think that. 😢 This applies to both WA and OR.
Where do the shad that go up the Columbia and the Willamette end up dying and spawning. Do they all die after spawning? Is there any studies on how they affect the native species positive or negative? I’ve heard the pikeminnow gorge on the shad babies on their way out to sea.
i agree it's not worth fighting over, but my lord that annoys me and shows a huge lack of respect imo. good on you staying relaxed while that guy got way too close.

That does sound like fun, what depth do you usually set it at?

You must eat some weird canned tuna. Fresh canned albacore is light years tastier than shad

A plain jig head with the gold hook works great on a sunny day. Flicker spinners too, size 0

Funny I usually go to the willamette for shad and the Columbia for chinooks these days.
The Willie shad are fun but smaller
😊Like it Milt....I will be there soon. Love shad....not just good bait....cook it and eat it outdoors so you can spit bones.....tastes good.❤
Didn’t know they had Shad runs in the pacific; my dad caught one back East in the Delaware river a couple of weeks ago in New York State!
The Columbia gets over 6 million
Pickled shad, love it!!!
doesn't soiund good, sour fish?
These make great strip bass bait.
They are fun on fly rods
Fun on spinning rods too
It's time to see a dinosaur video yay!!
Love this timely video! Tyler, where is a good place to launch and fish from a boat for these guys on the Columbia? Or a few options…?
Beacon Rock for the Bonneville fishery. You can also fish off the ends of the wing dams out of Camas/Washougal or St Helens, OR
What is the salmon regulation under the Bonneville dam? Seems very complicated.

Many years ago that was case. This weekend however is free fishing weekend so you could take the whole family for free.

Yes they die and no studies have been done
Great video, Thanks! So, no fishing license is required to harvest shad???
You need a Washington freshwater license... there's just isn't a limit on how many shad you can keep.
Do you use barbless hooks or not - on Bonneville Dam?
No
Could you do a how to fly fish for these guys?
Nah
why ther's no boats out there?
Boats not allowed
I was fishing downstream from you a bit yesterday. I got nothing on a chartreuse and green dart. How long do you try a color before switching up?
If I was catching beforehand I won’t give it any more than 10 minutes
If such a nuisance fish why letting go ugh thought no catch limit ?
Because I have no use for them and just throwing dead fish on the bank or back in the water violates the law
i agree it's not worth fighting over, but my lord that annoys me and shows a huge lack of respect imo. good on you staying relaxed while that guy got way too close.
Yeah pretty silly he would set up camp right there when you can see plenty of space in both directions he could have gone
If you’ve never fished below Bonneville on a 100k shad day, you would know he wasn’t that close. Two more guys could have jammed into that gap.
