He was a very lethal left-handed draw. Most people are right-handed. The angle that he stood at caused the sunlight to shine on the silver of his belt, creating a ball-shaped light fragment. Standing in a stance, this light covered his right side in front of his right hand making the opponent have to work harder to see, expecting and distracting a right handed draw, but instead it was a decoy and *bang* with the left hand!
except he doesn't really. midnight and calloway are incredibly difficult to beat without cheating (drawing first) so most people did NOT fight a fair duel
I recently replayed the game and did this and noticed the buckle flash.... I'm ashamed to admit it actually distracted me and I didn't begin to draw fast enough. But yes, even when he's desperatly trying to 'prove' his legacy he's still cheating. I think every one of them is shown to be not up to the legends. One is a criminal running a gang, another is a supposed phsychopath who made a deal with the government, another is just a paranoid guy who thinks you're trying to kill him and then tries to kill himself if you shoot the gun from his hand. And black Belle is the only one who holds a bit of water, but she proves she is just intelligent and made the entire area full of explosives to fend off her pursuers. The truth, the 'gunslingers' of old are either the dirty ones who are survived to tell the tales and non one else to disprove them, or the honest ones who died.

It is. The mission starts in Valentine very early in the game. I think you it appear like the first couple times you reach Valentine. But the follow up story comes way later after you finish the initial tasks. The story will give you follow up task only when you reach around ch4 if I remember it correctly.
