    Been a cyclist for a long time, but I've never known about this Garmin GPSMAP series before as my head is deep in Garmin Edge and Wahoo Bolt. I'll be doing a lot of bikepacking trips in the future, you Sir, have just convinced me to look into one of these GPSMAP devices. This looks niftier and more intuitive than the Garmin eTrex series! Thank you for such a mellow and easy to follow tutorial, besides, your voice is very therapeutic too!:) Keep up the good vibes and videos.

      Me too, Edge was God, but now I'm going to try the 64st bought used last night. I don't need the competative and social part of the Edge family. Heartrate, cadence and route or logging the map. And I can use it in the canoe on the fjord etc. This will help me a lot the next days when I'm learning to use the new used device 👍

    Very , very informative. Hell of a good job explaining the the GPSMAP 64. I have had GPS units for 20 years just like most folks but I still learned something. I will need to replacing my 15 year old 60 CSX that died 3-17-19. That was a great unit. Not sure if I will buy the plain 64ST because I bought the TOPO and City Nav DVD's yrs ago with my 60CSX. Anyway thanks for taking the time to explain the GPSMAP 64. Sure wish there was a power port on the GPS for traveling and not have to use up the batteries.

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  5 лет назад

      Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it. Oh yes I would love to see them add Power Ports to the 64's... I would use my all the time on my daily travels on the land both with the ski-doo and Side by Side... and even in my vehicle for that matter. I'm always out exploring new areas for hunting and fishing. Now I just wait until I'm near the place before turning on my GPS with a Power port it would be turned on right from the get go....

    Hi - thanks for the video and for attending to the follow-up comments.
    I'm wondering if you can get the unit to take you back to your original point along your breadcrumb trail rather than the shortest possible distance. In hilly terrain this is probably a more likely scenario then just walking the line produced by the 'Find' function.

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  5 лет назад

      Yes 100%, I will do a video on that... It's actually a wonderful idea for a video. I have used the breadcrumb trail to mark a trail into a moose before. It was getting dark and I needed to get a trail into the moose for the quad to follow after dark. Learned I should have flagged a couple of tricky spots but other than that the breadcrumb trail took use right back to the moose.

    Hey NLGhostWolf, excellent video. I bought the GPSMAP65 and definitely needed a how to use it video and you answered that call. It was super important for me to know how to use this device before going on an adventure. However, I plan to use roads to navigate from one waypoint to another and this GPS only does straight line as the crow flies. To use roads I have to buy and install software, but, now I know how to put in waypoints and that is essential. Thanks so much for the video.

    Wondering if you ever had an issue with the GPS going back into tracking North while having it is in Track up mode?Have owned mine acouple years and this year had it where it was working fine out in the woods and then looked at it and Blue arrow would only track North and it was definately in track up mode.Thought it may have something to do with cold weather.Shut it on and off.Put it in pocket with a hand warmer.Installed new batteries while in the field and even went into track north mode and back into track up.Eventually got it to start to track up.Any ideas?

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  4 года назад

      Sorry no ideas here, that's the problem with the electronic world we are living in. When everything works great its a wonderful world, but like all electronic devices, when its not working, it's very hard to determine the cause/fault. That's why I always carry a compass as back-up... Play with over and over and if it happens again contact Garmin directly...

    Thanks very much for your informative video. I have a Garmin 64sx coming today. But holy crap. What a hassle to use! Lately I've been using GaiaGPS on my iPhone8, and it's fast and easy. The only reason I spent the money on the Garmin was because I often find myself roaming around out here in the wilderness and suddenly realize I'm in an area where there's no cell service and I haven't downloaded the hi-res topo maps for the region I'm in. So, the Garmin will at least give me some indication of where I am and what's there. Obviously, however, much better to have downloaded the suitable maps in advance for GaiaGPS.

    • @NLGhostWolf

However when I press MENU while in the compass, there are only 3 options and no option for calibrating the compass. I noticed the instructions do show the 64ST model in the pictures. Thanks for this. Hitting Find shows all waypoints, and you scroll down to the one you want. But if you have 1000's of waypoints, can you somehow specify the name of the waypoint you want, and the device will take you right to it? If you can do that, does the device display just that one waypoint, or does it take you to that waypoint within the complete list of waypoints ?

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  6 лет назад

      I don't no, the only time I look for waypoints is when I'm in the area of that waypoint and the Garmins do a great job with listing the waypoints by nearest, so that is the feature I always use because it just makes perfect sense to me.

      Did you try selecting a waypoint then hitting Find Waypoint. This should give you the shortest route/straight line path to a waypoint. Don't select route... Waypoint and Find Waypoint.

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  3 года назад +1

      For me it's a 9+ out of 10.... Only compliant I've heard was some people find them hard on battery life. For me the two most important things in using a GPS are 1). ease of use. and 2) Sat signal.... This unit has both in spades...

      Mine takes 2 AA batteries. So no, I just carry spare batteries. Much simpler than carrying the charger and solar panels. Not sure about the newer units? but mine is at least 5 years old. Still works as good as the day I bought it.

    A tip: This unit guzzles battery life even when "turned off". I turn one battery backwards when I am no longer navigating to save batteries. With Garmin "off" is not "off"... It is a MAJOR frustration for me. If you do not do this you will get 18 ours from a pair of good alkaline batteries.

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  3 года назад

      I constantly turn off my GPS when not needed.

    • @davidbrewer7937
      @davidbrewer7937 3 года назад

      @@NLGhostWolf I find that the batteries still drain down over 24 hours even when it is switched off... This is why I kill off whatever sneak application is running in the background by turning one battery backwards to shut it off completely. When "off" does not really mean "off". This is not a unit I would buy again, but I also have Trackmaps with all the extras for it so I am in for $500 for this unit.

    Man thanks for sharing I am thinking about getting one was wondering how hard it is to use. What model would you get now?

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  4 года назад +2

      Well if money is not an issue I would go with the inReach Explorer because it is both a GPS and a source of communication that enables you to trigger SOS if needed. Truly can be life-saving if needed. I was recently asked to go on a search with the local search and rescue team for two lost hikers up in the Lewis Hills. Well due to their altitude the hikers had intermittent cell service. But the search team had none where the search started at the trail head. With the use of an inReach that was paired to a cell phone the search team had cell service through it. Which enabled us to communicate to the hikers as we conducted the search until I spotted them. Anything can happen out there off the beaten path, having help available at the press of a button is priceless.

    • @stevenhicks815

    On your computer you had the trails in satellite view. In the field you had a blank screen. Why can't they put the satellite view on the GPS unit? Wouldn't need as many way points and able to see exactly where you are on the trail. Wouldn't that make sense and be a lot easier and safer travel?

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  3 года назад

      Yes you can get that with the more expensive models, however this is all I could afford at the time.
