Why The F-117 Is Still Flying?

- After the introduction of the F-22 Raptor in late 2005, the US Air Force deactivated the F-117 Nighthawk in 2008, but just two years later, in 2010, F-117 spottings became more frequent. Actually, what you don't know is that the F-117s were never retired at all, they were put on a status where they could be called back to service if needed. The most well-known purpose for the F-117's continued usage is as an aggressor aircraft. Let me simplify this for you. Look, the F-117 has a lower RCS than the B-2 stealth bomber and the F-22 raptor, and therefore they're now being used as "the enemy" in training exercises with current front-line US Air Force aircraft like the F-15s and F-16s. Last year, F-117s and F-35s were spotted in a mysterious mirror-like skin, which may have been an experimental treatment to reduce the aircraft's infrared signature. The F-117s have also taken part in Red Flag exercises, and the US Air Force has also acknowledged that they're still flying, as it didn’t make sense to deny it with all the sightings of the jet.

Despite the age of the F-117, it's still considerably ahead of any other country's stealth program. Making it a viable, if somewhat inefficient, plane to use in strike ops
The F-117A is actually a bomber more than an attacker. They should have made a class more of an attacker to be called an attacker.
an aggressor aircraft is a plane used in training to play as the enemy
The main purpose still is to drop Bunker buster bombs from a high altitude.
They wanted fighter pilots to fly it, so that's why they called it a fighter.

Then its a, Fighter?!?!
F-117's were very expensive and still represent a considerable value. They're already in service and it makes sense to keep them just like the B-52.

The RCS for the F-117 is actually a bit bigger than the F-22 and B-2. The B-2 and F-22 have an RCS of ~0.0001m^2, and the F-117's is ~0.003m^2.
No. That is incorrect. Also, your example shows that it is 30 times less stealthy which is very inaccurate.
The true RCS for the F117 has never been published. But it's been known to be the most stealthy aircraft by a margin, until the B21 came along.
@@2engjnr2 The F-117 is the least stealth aircraft of any. It has a poor diamond shape fuselage with radar reflecting panels… it has a large RCS than other USAF stealth aircraft.

@jreyman are you telling me a plane made in the 1980s isn't as stealth as a plane that had its first flight last year? That's crazy talk.
I remember reading a Clancy novel that suggested using the F117 as a radar deflector, flying in front of an F15 or F18. Tom Clancy seemed to have a good sense of our military's capabilities, so I wonder if they're still around for that?
That depends on the angle of the flight and where the radar orignation is.
Flying cover using Nighthawk might blew the stealth
@@Overneed-Belkan-Witch - In the story, it was a head to head fight, too far away for visual, just radar. When the Japanese planes were too close to run, the F15s took over.
Current plans include F-22 and F-35 coming in with stealth drones and attacking known radar and missile sites to hit and neutralize these which are deadly threats to the F-15, F-16, F-18, etc. After the F-22, F-35, and stealth drones have cleaned up what they can, the F-117 is the backup bomber to hit any leftover sites that may have been hidden in reserve to hit non-stealth weapons wagon such as the F-15, F-18, and bombers, especially B-52. Taking air superiority of the OA allows the next wave of all sorts of aircraft such as A-10, F-16, combat and misc helicopters, and ground forces. AND make no mistake like this video, the F-22 remains the Stealth aircraft with the smallest RCS of a small marble. It is invisible to radars until it is almost on top of it.

As far as i know they flew the same Route everyday so the Serbs knew that they were coming. So they were prepared when the F117 finaly opend the Bomb Bay wich was enough to get a Lock on and a Kill.
The organization and over confidence of the sorties downed that plane. The radar frequency used is incredibly likely to have false positives, so if you dont actually already know a plane is there youll end up shooting at a cloud or flock of birds.

The F-117 is no where close to being as stealthy as the F-22
It’s less stealthy then the B-2 and the new B-21, and likely even less then the F-35 just because of its size
The F-117 is super cool without making stats up
I wonder how a literal fighter sized bomber is worse at being stealthy than an even bigger one
The first time I saw an F-117 and a B-2 was at the same time back in the late 90s or early 00s by a joint operations training base. My mom and I were outside taking care of our mini farm and we suddenly heard jets. It wasn't unusual considering how close we lived to the base, and i was young enough to where she would patiently wait with me to see what kind of planes were flying by the base/range. Then, we were both really freaked out when the three planes we saw looked like nothing that we had ever seen.
Even though we all know what these planes look like now, nobody had ever seen anything like that at that point in time. But considering the fact that they were flying on the exact same path that we normally watched other jets like F-15s travel, we knew it was something from our own military. We literally got to watch a B-2 (which looked badically like a giant boomerang) flying between a ninja star that was cut in half, both of us were completely baffled. It was also one of the coolest things i had ever seen.
About 20 years later, my parents had actually moved even closer to the base and my wife and I were living with them while waiting to close on our new house. One day, my mom mentioned that she kept hearing this weird "electrical cracking" kind of sound and asked if I knew what it was. I heard it a few times, but couldn't ever seen anything. But one day a few months later, I finally saw the source of the strange noise. Since that JOTC base had one of the biggest bombing ranges in the midwest, they were doing strafing runs with A-10 Thunderbolts. That "crackling" noise was actually the firing and impact sounds reverberating in the area during training missions. We eve got to watch an AC-130 fire every single gun aboard, including the flares when it left the AO. It was one of the most spectacular sights I've ever witnessed. It also made me eternally grateful that those fuckers were on my side lol. Getting to see the muzzle-flash from the main cannon, hear it shoot, and then hear the impact was totally terrifying, and we were over a mile away.

F22, f117, sr71 and b2 bomber these jets will forever be cool
and almost all jets have an arrowhead design just shows man always stays true to its roots
My grandfather actually helped develop the GPS systems for the 117. He was one of the first people to get their hands on computers (the room sized og computers) and did lots of defense contracting (mainly through Lockheed in Georgia). He also helped with Hubble. My mom also almost got my entire family arrested when she was little because she snuck onto a display 117 (the plane was decommissioned and used for a Lockheed family day)
F-117’s are so cool looking
I'm glad to hear the F-117 is still flying coz it's just so call looking.
One of the best planes
They have one of these at the Hill Air Force museum. Right next to the sr71 and the a10. Three badass planes lined up
My auto shop teacher was an airforce mechanic and was actually a part of the program that helped make them. I think that's pretty cool
being a kid in the 90s-early 00s, that plane alone wanted me to become a pilot
I am willing to bet that those F-117s are still in full operational use. Not even sidelined.
They are also being used as reconnaissance platforms with electronics/imaging instrumentation pallets in the bomb bay.
I don't care how old that design is, it's the coolest thing coming out of the 80's.
These planes are still so capable, compared to everything else out there, it makes sense to hang on to them for a bit.
Considering foreing adversaries doesn't have a equivalent 40 years after the USA introduction and probably they can't shoot it down, it would be a waste to simply retire it
Depends on the adversary. It's already been shot down by Yugoslavian AA missiles. Sure, it was a situation where the plane was easier to detect.
@@drill_fiend1097 surely flying the plane the same route on every missiom and having the baydoor stuck on one mission would help on detection xd
Go, man, go! I feel so patriotic whenever I see a military plane fly overhead. I lived close to an Air Force Base, and I heard reveille every morning at 8 o’clock. I felt compelled to get up and make my bed.😅 whenever I see a military aircraft or vehicle I always pray for the soldiers.
The F-117 is my favorite (modern) aircraft. I did not know that it had a lower radar cross-section than the F-22
