One scary fact I learned about the Northridge quake in ‘94 in the Greater LA area is that it had a peak ground acceleration of of 1.82 G.
Meaning everything above the fault nearly experienced DOUBLE GRAVITY in a split second!
I’m a 6’ guy that weighs 200 lbs and that would mean I would weigh 364 lbs in a sudden instant. My legs would buckle beneath my weight, I would collapse to the ground and the thrust earthquake propelled everything into the air.
One of my older friends says his cabinets were ripped from the walls and their ceiling fans were on the floor! His bed flew up in the air with him and his wife on it. They couldn’t stand up and they both collapsed in their room with fallen furniture around them.
This earthquake was the fastest peak ground velocity ever recorded in an urban area in North America and they didn’t even know that fault even existed at the time.
Can you imagine experiencing nearly double gravity in a single second while being firmly on the ground?
If you look at pics of the damage, concrete pillars for freeways didn’t fall sideways or break in half, they got crushed from the top down similar to vertically squishing aluminum cans with your feet.
Olive View medical center collapsed and the building’s pillars literally gave out due to too much vertical weight and even the infamous apartment building where 16 people died near the exact epicenter of the quake was crushed vertically, not fallen over.
