Went 2 months ago and was able to do both. Bought a VIP pass and express passes. Got in 15 minutes early with VIP pass so I ran to this ride to do Backdrop. Used the express pass for the forward-facing ride later in the day. IMO, Backdrop is a better ride because you can't see what's coming, and I got a bit more airtime as well.
It doesn’t look scary in the video, but DAMN my heart dropped on the floor when I rode Backdrop. I wasn’t prepared! I thought we were going to just sit on the back section but daaaaaamn
Ive ridden this coaster several times and I love it. I rank it over behemoth and its close to shambhala. As the train is very long and the drop is short, on the back row you get pulled over the first drop with some fantastic airtime. There are some strong and fun moments and it felt very different from other B&Ms!!! Also the theming, location, music, smoothness... make hollywood dream up for a really underrated world class experience
I guess the importance of the row you're sitting in is bigger on this ride than on most of the other B&Ms. Just look at the footage of the train on the first drop. The last row's acceleration looks pretty neat while the middle rows don't even start accelerating until they're half way down the drop.
Last row is always the best for the drops. I I was close to last and the first drop kicked my butt unexpectedly. It's not an extreme coaster whatsoever but so smooth and fun, the trains are huge so it's good for families and groups of friends. We selected the same song and sang it together out loud with out hands in the air. The best time. Also the XR ride has a pretty unexpected and fast drop.
I went on this ride with zero expectations and actually came off surprised at how fun it was. Nothing groundbreaking but some nice pops of airtime and a decent enough layout. I was in the back row mind, but haven't done Backdrop either.
I have actually been on this ride backwards, I took a Japan trip in November last year and this ride was way better than I expected when riding backwards. You get some backwards airtime on the second hill and it is sensational.
Well, yes and no. One time I rode that coaster, it had speakers on the seats and you could choose from a selection of songs. So, while you go to the top music is blasting behind you and the chorus starts right on the drop, plus you can wave at the people in the line it's really fun
I rode this roller coaster tdy. Maybe some improvements have been made since you rode but I can’t be sure. The initial drop was surprisingly fast and I found the air time hills quite Literally took me out of my seat, shoving me into the restrainers. The helix I found to be cool but felt the flight of the hippogriff was more forceful. Overall I found it to be really smooth, thrilling and just an all round fun ride.
i rode it 4 times forwards, with single rider line 0 min wait, i thought it actually had surprisingly good airtime and an intense ending helix. i thought it was very fun, and had decent airtime. I rode front twice (lucky) and second to last too. I also rode backwards once, and the airtime literally feels twice as strong, because of the way it pops you it gives kinda ejector. Backwards was really fun (rode in last car so had view) and i thought it was just a great fun ride. and with no wait it was just amazing. Music had great addition to the entire experience.
This video was great.... it totally reminded me that I had actually ridden this on my Coaster trip to Japan in 2018. Otherwise I had honestly completely forgotten it.
I rode Hollywood backdrop a few days ago and I found it elite. The music (especially bad by michael jackson) added a lot to the ride, and not even that, the hills gave ejector while going backwards and that is an awesome experience. I think the only hill that didn't give insane airtime was the second hill. Hope you get a better experience this fall trip!
I just rode this one last week and LUCKED out as I got the back row on backdrop at night. WOW. I was really not expecting much but it was a fantastic experience and one of the best coaster experiences I have had. Easily top 10 as it had lots of airtime and more intensity than I was expecting based on this review and based on it being in a family friendly park. Maybe it was due to the backdrop and being in the last row, or maybe that and it is running faster than before on a hot day, as WOW it was forceful and so much fun at night. If this coaster had no music, and was not backwards at night, perhaps it would have been more of a generic experience, but it was not and ended up being one of the highlights of the day. This and The Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba XR Ride also at USJ which was another coaster that caught me way off guard and is also ranked in my top 10 of all time. What a great USJ visit. Easily the best Universal Park after Islands of Adventures.
bruh I dont even ride roller coasters yet im the only one in my family who isnt a gp. I remember my dad getting off Rip Ride Rockit and saying "wow that was so smooth" I almost died of laughter after that.
To me, this looks like a mini B&M Hyper, but without the speed and height needed to achieve the amounts of airtime. It's a ride designed to look good (which it really does well), but really suffers from its lack of stats. The gimmicks, backlot and the onboard audio, are nice, but they sadly don't save it as far as you can tell. The nighttime lighting on the trains though, that looks legendary (I thought that Rip Ride Rocket was a joy to look at night, wow.). If I ever become a roller coaster designer, I may actually take a few ideas from this, if the client wants a visually appealing ride.
Right!! Both are Soooo worth the 3 hours, especially backwards!! Never tried it forwards but the backwards one at night and with the music was the most memorable for me!! Flying dinosaur was incredible toooo
We rode Backdrop as soon as the park opened and waited 30 mins. By luck, we got the very back of train. MAN that seat is intense. You are pulled down every drop and because you cant see where you're going, it's an awesome, scary experience. We rode HD before closing and waited 45 mins. We got the last car AGAIN. Front facing is less intense, but being in the back means you still get pulled down the drops. Super fun and intense.
People in Japan aren't crazy impatient, so I respect that. It's a cultural thing, and the ride ops are very organized and patient so a lot of people don't mind with the long wait. I know a lotta people will not be patient enough for it, but hey that's your own choice lol :D
i went on hollywood dream 3 times (twice forwards, once backwards) since i went on a pretty quiet day. my best experience was riding it towards the end of the day when the park is dark and everything is lit up, and i listened to lights by bts, it felt magical!! backwards is pretty fun but yeah probably not worth waiting two hours
I am a big b&m hyper fan and I guess this is the most atypical never the less I wrote 4 times front facing and 2 times backwards facing and I really enjoyed it however if you expect a hyper coaster you will be disappointed. It is a nice funny ride not scaring away regular visitors with height which just happens to be based on a thrill type model.
USJ Backdrop - I am the bravest when it comes to roller coasters, but I must say, the Backdrop ride made me want to cry mid-air! If not because of the background sound (Taylor Swift's Shake it Off) I'd probably faint, lol. But I I love it a must try! The forward was okay and fun, but the backdrop was something else, IMHO. Also, I also waited for only half an hour for both rides so maybe that's one reason I loved it.
Not many people realize that this may be the best B&M hyper coaster out there almost to be as good as intimidator and flight of the Himalayan eagle It’s short but it’s definitely sweet and it’s a really long ride too featuring a helix and a tunnel at the end One thing I do wish is that the drop was longer so the drop could be like 157 feet or so
I also only got one ride on it however it was on the backdrop in the back row (so the front). I found the ride to be quite fun and did get some air on it but I can definitely see that if you were in the middle of the train that the ride would be a lot worse.
This might be a really hot take, but after riding Shambhala, Diamondback, Intimidator, Behemoth, Raging Bull, Apollo's Chariot and this, this still turns out to be my third favorite B&M hyper just behind Shambhala and Behemoth.
I was there in the single riders line and got appointed not only the backdrop version but also the front (or is it back?) seat. It was just before closing so you could see the lights on the mainstreet and bridge in Osaka. Probably the most amazing ride experience I've had. Now backwards this ride is amazing. You really get pulled over some of its hills. BUt I can imagine that front facing it's a farely mediocore mega coaster. I consider myself lucky.
I accidentally got on this ride backward, sitting at the last row. Got air time on every drop. No where near the level of FujiQ rides, but more intense than Flying Dinosaurs IMO. Best thing about the ride is, it’s super smooth and floaty.
I wouldn't have waited 2 minutes to ride backwards; I rode Viper at Six Flags Chicago backwards once, and I was constantly turning my head to try to see what was coming. I prefer to see where I'm going. 😄
I think for non roller coaster person it was pretty good 😁 I am not a roller coaster person and I went on the Hollywood back drop thing with my cousin n dad the moment the park opened so there was almost no line and I had fun. Dad n cousin almost threw up tho 😂
I spent two days at Universal Osaka and managed to ride Hollywood Dream more (5 times) than I've managed to ride Rockit, which has been 20 minutes away from my house and I've visited Uni Orlando around 50 times since it opened. Even when Rockit has no queue I don't bother. Hollywood Dream certainly is not one of my favorite coasters, but it's around 50,000 times better than Rip Ride Rockit... It would be a massive upgrade to that Maurer pile of garbage at Uni Orlando.
I bet if the drop was steeper, it would be a better ride! But I understand with land and Japan's geography, it would be more expensive if they want it to withstand earthquakes.
I don’t agree… this was one of the best rides in Universal!!! I did the regular “forward”… chose “shake it off” by Taylor Swift which was very accurate lol I think it as about half the song 2 min ride!! Which was one of the longest rides!! About 70 min wait.
According to a new video here on RUclips this was one oft the most expensive rollercoasters of all time. I think it is even the most expensive B&M coaster with some 80 million of total cost as far as I remember.
You really got a bad shake with this ride. When I did this ride on my first day, the park wasn't as crowded, so the wait (in the single rider line) was pretty quick. I was lucky enough to get rides facing forward near the front and near the back, and yeah, you do have to be near the back to get any airtime with this ride. I also got one backwards ride in the very back(or very front?) and holy hell, was that great. Going backwards on this ride really saves it in my opinion, as going through the layout you have no idea what's coming, and the floater air going backwards feels a lot better going backward. So yeah, if Universal ran another backwards train, and let single riders go on a backwards train instead of forcing them to go forwards, this would honestly be a much better ride.
This ride is amazing, incredibly smooth and very long. The first drop slaps and the many camelbacks allows plenty of airtime. Plus the music selection always offers cool JPOP. I was able to pick Osaka Lover by iconic Dreams Come True ❤
UNIVERSAL: We need some new roller coasters stat! B&M: Sure, what would you like? UNIVERSAL: A Hyper and Flying Coaster. B&M: Ok, what is your budget? UNIVERSAL: $100 Million with theming. B&M: Ooh, we can't do both with that price. Which would you like more? UNIVERSAL: Uhh, let's do the flying coaster. B&M: Ok, great! Oh, by the way we could get you a Mega Coaster that could work with your budget. It may not be very good, but it's something. UNIVERSAL: Sure, let's do it!
When we went there backdrop's line was shorter so we went there, and we didn't even know it was gonna go backwards... we just picked a shorter line lmao🤣
Weird layout and make it aint even near hollywood lmao. Heard the lines are a pain in the pass on this ride. How do the use the double station with a backwards train as well? Is single riders long?? Small hypers just are not exciting with this company, the elements are just to spread out. Those first two hills are very drawn out wow.
I'd have a lot more respect for Universal had they sent Dueling Dragons to this park to open in 2019. It would have fit in great and helped a ton with the croud issue. They could have changed the name to "Dueling Dinos" and put it in the with Jurassic Park.
This is called a Mega Coaster. Not Hyper Neather a Jr. Hyper. Its like a Jr Hyper but its mostly perfer as a Mega Coaster. Let Me Explaind it to you. Steel Eel at SeaWorld ....or HellWorld 😒what I mostly called it, is also a Mega Coaster and Apollo's Chariot at Busch Gardens is Not really a hyper because it has nothing to do with the drop ,it all depends on just the hieght itself ,and I heard that a Happy Valley themed park Somewhere is also getting a B&M Mega Coaster just like This and Apollo's Chariot. And after Orion becomes a failure after the 2020 2021 or 2022 season it will be redesign into a Mega Coaster but taller than this and way better.
Talk about one of the most poorly designed b&ms. Half of those hills are no where near parabolic and the whole ride looks like it was designed around the front gate and not the other way around.
When taylor said he picked the song “Bad” by Michael Jackson and said it fits the layout, i died 😂🤣
I didn’t get the joke lol
Doesnt even really seem like this was designed to be a great ride but it makes sense for a park like Universal
Yeah. It's in between a family coaster and a thrill coaster.
Exactly. It’s kinda a family/thrill coaster
Hey what should be my first B&M flying dinosaur or hollywood dream?
yeah it looks like it's just for fun
btw I wach your channel
@@jaylenrocks1738 thanks!

should have gotten a B&... hol up
Should have gotten a good B&M
Should have gotten a Mauer.
Plz put that in the parody .
:0 when he said the song bad fit the coaster woah that was a good roast we need a parody of this ASAP
General Public: OMG Universal's Rip Ride Rocket
Coaster Studios Fans: Should have gotten a B and M, but not this one...
at least its a *B and M*

Imagine riding a 200ft+ tall B&M hyper backwards!
isn’t every b&m hyper 200+ feet (apollo’s chariot is an exception but whatever)
By hyper I mean hyper model not hyper height(200ft-300ft)so that could include a B&M giga.
Intamin Enthusiast oh my bad lol

TheSpanish Potato no a dueling dragons clone (maybe just fire)

This is called a Mega Coaster. Not Hyper Neather a Jr. Hyper. Its like a Jr Hyper but its mostly perfer as a Mega Coaster.
Let Me Explaind it to you.
Steel Eel at SeaWorld ....or HellWorld 😒what I mostly called it, is also a Mega Coaster and Apollo's Chariot at Busch Gardens is Not really a hyper because it has nothing to do with the drop ,it all depends on just the hieght itself ,and I
heard that a Happy Valley themed park Somewhere is also getting a B&M Mega Coaster just like This and Apollo's Chariot. And after Orion becomes a failure after the 2020 2021 or 2022 season it will be redesign into a Mega Coaster but taller than this and way better.
Went on it. It was awesome but scary
Let’s be honest the words “underwhelming” and “boring” were invented by Universal Studios parks
Nick Young I don’t agree, AT ALL
Nick Young *disney
No way this thing is worse than RipeRideRocket
This coaster imo was surprisingly underwhelming. The first two hills, as you watch the trains go over them, give the worst airtime on a b&m.
Looks like a family coaster
Give it the RMC treatment
I wonder why this isn't taller
Should’ve gotten a Rip-Ride-Rocket clone.
Did you like it better than rip ride rockit?
No
Rip ride rockit is terrible which is so bad as the songs are so cool and the idea is awesome
Trust me, you should ride it AT NIGHT
A wing coaster would work way better here
same design as Helix
The backdrop doesn’t make sense. Just feels like a gimmick!
Talk about one of the most poorly designed b&ms. Half of those hills are no where near parabolic and the whole ride looks like it was designed around the front gate and not the other way around.
