Thanks to the introduction of the Oculus (aka Meta) Quest 2, Virtual Reality has been gaining in popularity over the past couple of years and beginning to make it's way into the main stream. While the Quest 2's stand alone capabilities are impressive the BEST VR experiences are still only to be had on PC. But gaming in virtual reality on PC requires some pretty high end hardware and I wanted to find out if the PowerColor Radeon RX 6700XT Red Devil has what it takes. There's about a bazillion Radeon RX 6700XT reviews on RUclips but not one of them, I'm aware of, talks about it's performance in PC VR games. If you own a Quest 2 and are wanting to get into PC VR and looking at purchasing a 6700XT for VR, in this video I take a look at 8 different VR titles (namely Beat Saber, Vader Immortal, Contractors, Red Matter 2, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, Assetto Corsa, Lone Echo 2 and Half Life Alyx) to see just how well the RX 6700XT performs in VR and whether or not it's the right choice for you. So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

4:05 note that MFS 2020 has issues using the CPU mainly, so make sure the LOD sliders aren't any higher than 50.
I tested with both sliders to 100 and 40, no noticeable difference in terms of graphics fidelity, boosted my FPS from high 20s to around 50/60 and eliminated all the micro stutter I was experiencing.
That game is the definition of bad optimization sadly...
Edit: also try to disable ASW either from OTT (Oculus Tray Tool, I use this) or Oculus Debug Tool (open the Oculus folder > support > oculus-diagnostic > OculusDebugTool), you will avoid that really bad stutter caused from ASW kicking in and off + no artifacts due to the motion vector estimation (needed for ASW to render half frame rate and reproject it to your headset default refresh rate).
This will help in every game, you might want to pick a fixed value for ASW (or just ON/OFF as you can find both in OTT and Oculus Debug Tool) if your PC need it, having it always on will avoid the stutter from it turning on and off and in some games artifacts aren't really that present.
These are all things you can find on RUclips, Reddit or whenever you want, I had to learn this stuff experimenting by myself so I hope this could help someone.

Another great video Bryan! I think this video is HUGH and needed to be watch by everybody who is looking into getting into VR! As we of the medium know this already, but VR is taking off and becoming more and more accessible to the public. While the standalone headsets plays games just fine, but what do you need for the real meat and potatoes of PCVR games. Well, it's not very clear as to what specs you'll need, as most will just relay on the pcvr ready tests that are preloaded on your PC to kinda give you an answer on this.
On my 2017 Omen laptop that has an Nvidia 1060 GC and it passed the VR ready tests. That's all it says! It will either pass or fail. And I thought that's all I needed. My PC passes most benchmark tests to run most games on either high or very high settings in 2D, but VR, I found to be a whole different story. Even some games fail to mention this. The newest update in phasmophobia has the minimum pc requirements to play, while this game also supports vr, running that game with the minimum required specs will have your game glitchy and basically unplayable.
You don't know how your system will handle it till you load it and play. And most of which, you'll have to play in ungodly blurry condentions as to having to knock your settings all the way down to basically potatoe settings (no kidding, I think this was an actual graphic setting for half life alyx) which I had to put my laptop to in order to avoid my game from becoming a shuddering mess! I did beat the game on its lowest settings and it's still moved me to near tears and image what it would've been if I could see the game at full detail. I had already paid for the game so that's how I had to play it.
So thank you for letting people know about this Bryan 🙏 there has been way too many that had to guess if their system was strong enough to play games based on the performance of the Graphics cards via 2D games. 2D tests scores DOES NOT reflect what a 3D game would look and play like while in VR. 2D and 3D are two intirely different monsters and can't be tackled in the same manner! Please be aware of that!

you could easily get away with less cpu, like a 5700x or 5600x. or you could go intel with the 12400 or 12500f for the extra generation (13th) of support. AM5 and 13th gen are still, in my opinion, too expensive for the 6700 xt. just saying you could save a little bit on your cpu

I been researching serveral hours for more than a week and I am still struggling with this amd card, haven found many people who solved the problem, tried old drivers, different configurations, cables and wifi settings,..
The only thing it kind of help it was buying VD which let you choose a different codec (hevc) that AMD actually has working well.

I would try automobilista 2 or other sims but honestly I just like assetto,..

Great video, thank you. I am trying to decide on a new Graphics card to upgrade my 5700xt. My main concern is Assetto Corsa in VR. 72 fps with settings turned up is MUCH better than what I am getting. Are you using any custom shaders? Or just native? I am trying to decide if it is worth the upgrade or to hold our for next gen.

    • @SillyMonkeysLikeApples
      @SillyMonkeysLikeApples Год назад

wait,.. I am in the same boat as you are, upgraded to a 6800xt and the performance its great but for VR amd drivers are bad, I use ac with csp and pp, wheel and pedals,...
with my old 1660 i could get around 72fps lowering some settings, switched to 6800xt and the bitrate and ecode problems really showed up, no matter the drivers version, in game configs etc, the bitrate was making things way worse that my 1660, the only work around is basically but virtual desktop where somehow the codec and bitrate can be changed and it works quite well, however if I would known this in advance I would upgrade to a "lower 3070" since it would handle ac perfectly and have the encoder and bitrate working properly.
This AMD problem its been here for over 2 years.
I have a feeling that there is still image quality that could been better with nvidia, virtual desktop-amd workaround really helps but only that much, probably with a nvidia would be better, the guy on the video doesnt explain his settings, he claims that both virtual desktop and airlink works fine, still havent seen how he made it look fine, think that the video u are watching its the monitor output, my monitor also looks amazing but once your eyes are in the little lenses things look diferent, that because the gpu first renders (and that what u see on the video and your monitor) then in encodes/renders to your headset.
I will try to sell my AMD and switch to nvidia back, since I only use it for sim racing on vr, where I expect to spend a few hours every session without eye strain

however this problem its very noticeable on fast games, ac, f1 2022 are the ones I tried, but half life alyx wasnt a problem at all, it looked great from the beggining despite the bitrate being low and so.

Well, considering the current price of GPU's... if you're in the market to spend around $800 (which is the current approximate price of a 3080), I'd get a 6950XT. It's got 16GB of VRAM versus the 3080's 12GB (or the 10GB of the new shaved down 3080) and it's a much more powerful GPU. The best deal on a 6950XT I found just now was a PowerColor RX 6950XT Red Devil on Newegg.com for $784.99 plus $10 shipping. The only 3080's on Newegg right now are the new 10GB models that also don't perform as good as the 12GB models and the cheapest one is $769.00
These are all new GPU's though and not used ones where you can probably find a much better deal if you're willing to spend the time looking.
