I came across your videos and I watched because my daughter had a spinal cord injury as well . Unfortunately my daughter didn’t get to the point you are. She passed almost 10 years ago . Just out of curiosity of what her life would have been like had she lived I have been watching your videos . That may sound crazy . But I am a momma that would give anything to have her back. You are a true inspiration.

My best friend became a quad when we were 19 in a very similar diving accident. We are Australians and are now 68. Over the years we have travelled extensively, when I married my Norwegian husband she came to stay in Breiviklia with us, she lives half her time in Sydney and half in the U.S. and has advised on the many aspects on living as a disabled woman. Covid meant her life was curtailed to a certain extent but travel is not as important to her as it once was. Like you my friend was an amazing water skiing and pianist before "the accident" as we have always referred to that dark day. Many, many light days followed and she always managed to get her bed sores healed. My love and admiration to you. In those early wheelchair days people used to stare and whispered and some would just bowl up and say "and what happened to you?" That no longer happens as times have changed thank God. All the best X.

You remind me of my dearest friend who passed away very suddenly a while back. Although I am sorry I’ll never again enjoy the sheer joy of her company, I feel her presence in many delightful ways. She would have loved your posts as I do. Like you, she was a statuesque blonde who lit up everyone’s life with her wonky sense of humour and unawareness of how much she contributed to the happiness of those who were blessed to know her. I want you to know how pleased I am to know you.

Eirin - I've always thought of the word "No" as a really positive tool, and one that can be used in so many ways - it's so versatile yet, culturally it carries a negative connotation that I believe it doesn't really deserve. We use it in so many helpful ways, sometimes without using the word at all. It keeps a child's hand away from a hot pot. It lets your friend know that perhaps it's the other dress that looks fantastic. It keeps a schedule reasonable. And yes, it can set boundries. It's a very little word with such a huge job. I'm so glad to see that you're feeling more comfortable with it. xoxo Suzi

Now that I have finished watching the entire video, I will post again. Loved the content and hate how we as humans have a hard time saying two letters, which can be a complete sentence! NO. In my case when I got sick with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue back in 2000/2001, that pretty much took care any social life I had. I lost most of my friends and my marriage - thankfully it was a sort lived second marriage, but it still hurt tremendously as I had sold my house and moved an hour away to live where he lived, leaving two of my children with their dad, they were at a point in school where it didn't make sense to disrupt them and I saw them on the weekends, I did take my son with me because he had started getting in trouble, hanging around the wrong crowd and I was more strict than their dad was. I did move back near my ex and kids when my marriage fell apart and I am glad I have my children and now 10 grandchildren all close by. I still have to say No to many things - sporting events for my grandchildren that involve sitting on hard bleachers, even with a padded cushion, I still can't do it, any parades they have been in, I can't stand for a long period of time nor sit in a beach chair or whatever they are called. I do attend all of their birthday parties even if they are at a local park. I just double up on my pain medicine and know I will likely be in the bed or on the couch for several days afterwards. It sucks. They range in age between turning 4 in March and the oldest just turned 19. I did babysit most of them when they were little so my kids could work but it was tough (only one child at a time usually and never more than 6 hours at a time if I was alone.) Saying No to my kids and grandkids is much harder for me than to anyone else. I really really have to love someone enough to say yes to something knowing it will result in me being bed or couch ridden because of that activity.

And for those who identify as empathic, it’s harder because we can feel the “sadness and/or dejection the other experiences, when we say no- it can be a double whammy. I always focus on the other person’s emotions I often forget/forgo my own, stemming from childhood, wanting to please and be acknowledged by older siblings, narcissistic mom. And now, I’ve sadly taught my daughter the same behavior. 😔

Eirin you are human, its ok to loosen your grip. You like cheese too! I use a coping mech which is simply tell yourself if you want cheese, as a comfort, is tell yourself you will have it tomorrow. When tomorrow comes you will likely feel a little more up beat in the morning and not want cheese after all. You are such a treasure. The sun will always come up in the morning. Saying ‘no’ is ok too. Just say its gently, the receiver will understand and move on. Only use an alternative if you want to. No, its not shutting down its just postponing or be clear about how you feel. It’s ok to say no.

Eirin you are a beautiful soul. Your calming, warm and soothing voice reaches out & touches so many of us I am sure. I suffered for years thinking of others first and never myself. As I have gotten older (almost twice your age) I have learned to think & love myself for who I am first and then others. For the longest time I felt this would be selfish on my part if I let this happen but have finally understood you have to love yourself to love others. I have had to end relationships with people who were toxic in my life, always being there when they needed me, to vent, to comfort but never getting that love or care back. It was quite painful to go thru, the guilt, the should I let my feelings go and hang on to what was. I can say as time has gone by it has gotten better. Thank you for being you.

Oh whoa 😮. Pretty much every word statement you made in this particular video could’ve come out of my mouth… Except for the fact that I’ve reached the point where getting to the bottom of the trench and being exhausted, and my mind not shutting off, well, I’m OK with it not resolving after 40 years as I’m 58 now. Having discussed my feelings and plan with family and getting things in order with my finances and lawyer, etc. and made the decision that I want to and I don’t have to say. NO IT’S MY DECISION. I KNOW WHAT IT FEELS LIKE EVERY WORD THAT YOU SAID ABOUT HOW IT FEELS, AND AS YOUR VOICE TREMBLED WITH THE EMOTION, I FELT IT. It’s very ironic and educational. If that’s a good word to explain it, that you can sense that feeling starting to come over your thoughts and mind and body you know it’s coming, and there’s really nothing to stop it and you can’t explain it to someone else who’s not been in that situation or has that “illness “… you said it in a way that I’ve tried to explain to others. With therapy it literally took me years to say no… And by saying no, and feeling that guilt, and yet been exhausted, that particular time or day, even though I had nothing to do because the thought of the request was overwhelming 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️‼️❤ MB Canada
