How A Canadian Couple Gets Firewood In Winter With Deep Snow: Northern Alberta

- Winters in Northern Canada can be bitter Cold...
But the radiant heat that comes from a woodfire place keeps our home nice and toasty warm!
Join us as we head out to the bush to cut down and load our Chevy truck with dry Lodgepole pine.
When looking for firewood, we want trees that are still standing but are dead.
That way they still retain a large amount of their BTUs ( heat output ).
Once a tree falls down, it starts rotting and reduces the quality and amount of heat it produces when burned.
I split all our firewood by hand with a traditional woodsman axe...
...as I find it helps a person stay in better physical shape then using a hydraulic wood splitter.
Great chev commercial. In the bush,no other vehicles, you know it will start and drive out.
Haha, I guess you can look at it that way! 🤣 I am a fan of the Chevy half tons though
Myself and everyone I know hates those caps. I have a 361 too.
Yah, they work great on some saws, and not so good on others
luv your vid..welcome to my world we do same but with a husky 562 xp makes me feel good doing my owne firewood
Great video. Nice to see families working together. Your boy will be right there in it before you know it.
Yep, our little man already likes helping us with whatever he can
Awesome video! Even when I’m not doing firewood I’m thinking about it or watching great videos like yours! Thanks!
You bet! Yes, harvesting wood is pretty satisfying
Agreed, wood heat is the best! Nice video. Great family time.
Thank you! And yes, it definitely is the best kind of heat
Nice video. New sub from southern Ontario here.
Thanks for the sub!
Great video!!!
Thank you!!
Very dry heat. Some people leave a pot of water (Or a stew for dinner) to add humidity because the air gets so dry. Those stove top stainless steel coffee makers just perking away also helps.
Yes, for part of the winter we also put a pot on the stove with water in it. The wood heat really dries things out...mix that with -30°C for several weeks and things are almost too dry in the house
Schönes Video 👍
Thank you!
Good video! Some great tips. I have not been able to have my fire for years due to insurance. Miss it on these -30 C nights!
Yah, insurance sometimes doesn't like wood fireplaces. Which makes sense in a way, but I also pushes people to be more reliant on the grid. Which I don't think is a good thing
@@LeifnAbby Agreed. In an emergency though, I would risk it.
The MS361 is an all around excellent firewood saw and the last of the good 60cc class Stihl saws. Nothing beats wood heat for sure!
Couldn't agree more! It's a handy little saw.
When I gather firewood I always took a piece of plywood large enough to shield the back window from the bed how to back window broken out once
Wondering why you dont leave that dry pine unsplit? You would get much better burn times. I didnt see any wood in that load you cut that wouldnt fit in your stove. It is nice to have some smaller split stuff to fill in the holes.
We leave most of it unslpit. But I like to start fires with split wood and also the wood produces more heat when it's split. We were heading into -30° C weather for the next week.
Really well done video!
Thank you very much!
Ooo Leif You have a youtube channel! It's Koen btw, I like the video!
I have a suggestion though, in that spot around 9:30 when your teaching about tidying the rope I would make that into a 60 second short people will watch it because they learn something. I've used shorts a lot and they help gain an audience very quickly and you have the ability to teach in a way that engages the listner so I think they would do well.
Also scheduling for 5am I find seems to help because you catch morning traffic for the whole day for shorts
Thank you for the comments and tips Koen! Greatly appreciated! I was thinking of making the rope tying a short as well... So I'll get that done in the next day or so. And the tip on scheduling makes sense. I'll use that feature.
Awesome! I’m excited to see it!
Black for crocheters your doing a chain stitch
New sub here. Like the family together activities.🏁
Thank you for the sub! We appreciate it. We drop a new video every week
Why chop down a healthy tree when you have fallen logs ?
Very good point! We only fall standing dead trees. Not healthy live ones. We leave those to keep growing and continue on keeping the forest beautiful

New subscriber. My ms362c is my most used saw. Not my favorite but I use it most. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Yes, the MS362c is a pretty handy saw. But it does have its limitations
