It's quite a long time since I wonder why someone is born or becomes an actor. The answer was revealed to me quite reasonably by an 82 year old Dublin actor who has been on the stage since he was aged 7 and whom I had the pleasure to see recently, Mr. Denis Rafter. He lives in my country and loves and studies our classical theater authors.
He does a brilliant reflection and says that being an actor is something that began in the history of prehistoric man. He figures out that while a group of people had spent a whole day locked in the cave feeling hungry and scared, the hunters arrived with food and later after having eaten ,when everyone was happy to survive one more day, they relax and some members talk a little, others nothing at all, but there is a young caveman of about 14 years old who has the gift of comunicating with his performance the details of the hunting day, using his body and imagination to provide information and entertainment to the other fellow humans.
It is his theory of the 'young caveman' and the beginnings of the acting profession that is essential for humanity, like eating.
