Love that talk between them like they are mates as the professor knows he is dying and essentially just becomes normal - great scene
Kinda sad and tragic
This movie does a great job of showing that no matter what army you fight for, you’re just a hired gun that was fooled by your government

Clive Owen was my favorite asset. He was so real.
"Look at this. Look at what the make you give."
In the 3rd movie, at the last scene, this is what Bourne says to the assassin that was chasing him before jump from the roof. It's the last thing that Jason says in the movie. That was very nice of the director.
I need to work that into my next peer-to-peer review at work.

Everybody dropping lines or talking about the birds. I'm still impressed with how they subtly demonstrate his training by having him study the room for clues that lead to the shotgun.
Or the fact that he knows something is off as soon as they mention the dog is missing.
The writing for this film was genius.
Just the question "does that happen often?" Some dogs like to run some don't! Movie is fantastic 👍
i dont get why birds indicate the sniper's position??
@@danielniels22 it was just a means of distraction I guess
@@yogeeshlc It also covers the noise of movement. Even though bourne doesn't approach him, he probably assumes that's why bourne scared the birds. This makes him nervous enough to move, giving Jables a shot. We've seen him win a physical fight, so this one is about winning a mind game fight instead.
It’s the OODA loop. Observe, orient, decide, act. Any new piece of information gets examined independently, so you never get stuck in one way of thinking and get tunnel vision. Your actions have to be based on the most real time information you have.
From realising the dog is dead to killing the assassin in a matter of minutes now that's some skill level

Not buying it, the birds settle in a group. In that big field they could settle in 3-4 places which then would not reveal the sniper’s position. He flushed them to confuse the sniper about his position and then moved under cover of their noise.
Great scene. Bourne makes the sniper change positions then he catches him in sight. Bourne says the same thing at the end of Bourne ultimatum. Look at what they make you give.

@renewer He said he had headaches, which may have messed up his mental focus. They showed how he was quite scared at the gunshots, and thought he must've been in sight. Then he took a proactive approach.
@renewer yeh im talking bullshit. I appreciate the directors vision but it really fails upon scrutiny.
it's not sniper it's an sg553
The Professor was still defiant in the end. Notice how he still gave Bourne almost no information. He was buying time as he died, refused to answer his questions and instead made Bourne confused by asking him about headaches.
@Oz Rico-Navarro Good point. But, when Bourne asks the Professor if Treadstone is in Paris...the Professor ignores this direct question and says, "They said, Go to Paris."
He never gives Bourne the information he wants.
No, he was too mortally wounded to even fight back let alone kill himself. His only weapon against Bourne was to distract him with questions. Do you get headaches?
The guy probably doesn't understand why Bourne is asking about Treadstone and is just as confused about the situation. How can you be asking about the training program that created you?
@DMTdaydream That was part of it BUT he still had a job to do and he did it. No info for Bourne!
When Bourne asked if Treadstone was in Paris, the Professor easily could have said yes or no. He was in agonizing pain. Instead, he kept his wits and refused to answer Bourne's direct question.
The Bourne series is SO AWSOME it’s unexplainable.
Smart as hell by scaring the birds and using their noise to mask the sounds you make moving positions.
Interesting, I didn't think of that. I always thought he was using the birds to triangulate the enemy's position by how they reacted.
Huh... ok. Wow. I thought Bourne did it to stop them from giving his position away. Both would be the case i think.
It wasnt to mask his position, it was to see where in the field the other guy was. He shoots to scare the birds, moves a small amount so that hes no longer near where the sound of the gun came from, and then watches the birds and the field to find where the other guy is.
I think he also knows that by doing this he'll also know the general vicinity in the field that Clive can't have been hiding in ......

i love the attention to detail showing bournes situational awareness on the fly .How hes able to figure out where the home owner would hide the gun from his kids
Smart how Bourne always tops off his shotgun. He makes sure there's always one shot left while he reloads. If the Professor opened fire, he can at least quickly return one shot as suppressive fire to buy time and find some cover.

I know yea. I always admired how empathetic Bourne was after shooting the Professor, he was never sadistic in harming him. I think he always regretted killing the Professor, especially after the 'look at what they make you give' moment. He was the only one who could understand Bourne and the struggles he was facing. I like to think that's why doesn't kill some of the other Treadstone agents in the sequels, in case they also shared his moral doubts.
Matt and Clive made this scene, and later 'Jason' uses the same words, "look at what they make you give". Magic.

Although he could've just asked the guy where the shotgun was.
MyEnemy ah but what if the father insisted that he keep the shotgun to protect his family. In another scene he explains how he can remember every license plate outside and know that the best place to look for a gun is in the glove box of the truck outside. If you watch closely, he uses the flushed birds to locate the "Professor". He sees them shy away from a certain part of the field and knows they are reacting to the other man's presence.
This scene, along with the discovery of his “Treadstone deposit box”, is my favorite scene.
It shows Bourne using really smart, low-tech ways of flushing out The Professor. Sadly his character, the man one Bourne could really identity with (Castel was dead and Manheim unknown) and tragically he dies at Bourne’s hands before revealing much of anything. His well-known line “Look what they make you give” is rivaled only by “She’s standing right next to you.”
Tigerman, "low tech ways" that would never, ever work. Do you really think you can shoot a propane tank at 100 yards with #6 bird shot and it will explode?? Never.
Or shoot a guy at 50 yards with the same shot gun and he'll go down? Never.
Or the moronic scene where the "assassin" rappels through the plate glass window on the street side and no one sees him and he doesn't even get one cut?
And he has an open barreled SMG and no back-up gun?

"Look at what they make you give..."
Foreshadowing
In the end you can see how Jason gets angrier at Treadstone after he kills the professor, the professor was lonely and it became clear just how messed up these "treadstone" people were by using people like Jason and then killing them off. If it was months earlier it could have been Jason on the hill waiting for him, and that's why you see it in Jason's face when the professor dies; it was the first real connection the professor had in probably years and it's in his last moments. Jason was being empathetic to him, because not long ago Jason was just like him; and now he'll never get the chance to be free from treadstone like Jason. Everybody has a story and background and Jason kills many people later, but i think it was here that Jason really realized who he was and directs the regret and anger he has at himself to Treadstone.

From what I understand, both the professor and Bourne are honorable men, unfortunately they weren't aware that the higher ups in charge of operations were corrupt as hell until it was way too late.
Also... Jason spent the entire time looking for the "bad guy" only to discover that essentially he was the bad guy all along as he'd voluntarily joined the and committed to the program,,, thus allowing himself to be manipulated into taking the actions that he did...

I love the attention to detail because it's so realistic. A hitman would definitely drop his rifle and switch to a handgun if he needed speed on his side to defeat his enemy. I've seen a video where a drill sergeant told his recruits to do the same thing particularly if they're cornered and they have to escape QUICKLY. He firmly ordered them to "drop" the primary (rifle), go to the secondary (handgun) and run, run, run. Then he told them to put several shots downrange even if they cannot see the enemy. I guess the point is to lay down suppressive fire while trying to find cover from a different position.

Exactly! Live blanks and real training / stunts - gotta love it 😊
One of the most brilliant and realistic scene I've ever seen in an action movie. Doug Liman and Matt Damon fought to keep it as it was and they have all my respect for that. The scene is raw and cruel but it is also very intelligent and very realistic. The rhythm, the atmosphere, the actors, the scenery, the countryfarm at Christmas (I'm French so I know it) everything is true, everything sounds right... Bourne make a diversion by shooting at the cistern but he saw the landscape through the kitchen window before leaving. He knows that the terrain goes up the other side of the road and that's where the observer is. So he runs in this direction immediately because it may put a potential sniper in the obligation to look up from his scope.... Finally, the death of the "professor" is so raw and realistic. "Look at what they make you give..." It's not a clumsy blockbuster production. It's smart and very well written. Kind of like a Hitchcock from the great era. The whole movie is of this level but this scene really is a jewel.

yeah, and i'm very confused by the sniper's action of going out into the open. one of the worst tactical moves a soldier could ever make. honestly, stay out of the open.
thing is it was a shotgun, shotgun shells usually contain lead or steel which would create a spark if it were to contact metal at that speed
Leslie Doll the professor made a lot of mistakes. Hindsight is 2020, but here are the mistakes I think based on my own experience he made-
1) Killing the dog. There are plenty of ways to mask your scent.
2) Repositioning after the explosion. Once he saw Bourne maneuvering, he should’ve begun exfiltration. Game’s over at that point.
3) Going into the open. Huge wtf there.
4) Dropping his rifle in favor of his pistol in the middle of a field. He would’ve heard from the first two gunshots Bourne has a shotgun. The rifle has a huge range advantage.
5) Sidearm not already having a round chambered....
Yeah Slugs or buck shot would no doubt about it
@@lesdoll402 the professor had to reposition, or he would have been a sitting duck.
Especially after he took shots at Bourne and missed, he painted a red flag to his approximate location (which Bourne would have known by his own sniper training would be in an elevated position ).
He was prudent to displace. The one stupid thing he did was move out into an open field and run, which made him an easy mark to spot.
"Look at what they make you give..." Best fucking action movie in 20 years.
The double barrel shotgun works... everytime. (Ref. Doom)
I'm not a fan of Clive Owen's acting (except in Children of Men, where for some reason he was brilliant) - so his interaction with Bourne at the end of this scene slightly spoiled it for me.
However, everything leading up to that is just fantastic. I think it's the highly believable British family, the American hero in a European setting, the juxtaposition of the idyllic location with the murderous violence.
The grittiness of it helps to suspend your disbelief. I highly doubt shooting at that oil tank with a shotgun would cause it to explode, but somehow the movie sells it so you believe it. And when Marie says "We should never have come here, I... these children, if..." and Bourne just says, "That's not gonna happen" - and walks out to make sure it doesn't - there's just something so cool about that exchange. I love it. :)
Fun fact that I remember from a 'making of' featurette - the birds that Bourne scares up by firing the shotgun in the field are purely CGI.
Would the birds be back there so soon after the explosion?
