    Beautiful lady , love your presentation ! My 3 goji berry bushes produced way much more then we can consume freshly so I had same idea of yours to dehydrated them but the results were the same - it took too long and don't really dried completely. I learned from another video after dried them (as much as I can), I put them in jars and cover with raw honey. I keep them in the fridge. We were able to enjoy them during off season by mixing with morning ginger tea. Works great!

    Ours took two days to dry, also. I agree with Zachary that they have a somewhat bitter taste. I know how excellent they are for you so I eat them anyway. It's better than a multivitamin from the store.

    I dry mine on a screen in the sun. I lay paper towel over them and staple it down to the old wood table, this keeps the birds off. Takes about a week, they last all year in ziplock bags in dry cool place. I will make much more this year, the plants are really taking off. My dad takes a couple with his vitamins everyday. I mix them in with mixed nuts or just peanuts for snacks, very good. Thumbs up for Goji!

    Better to just eat the Goji berries after picking . They seem to be delicious and very healthy. The dehydrator is costly to run Kaye for such a small amount. I love the video and look forward to watching your next one. Fondest thoughts ,Patrick

    Most people own a dehydrator already. It's called a frost free refrigerator. I dehydrate food all the time on a sheet of food grade cardboard in my fridge. Cold dehydration is the way to go as it preserves the most nutrients. It also doesn't kill the seeds in my fruits. No additional energy required. A good source of food grade cardboard is pizza boxes.

      Gosh, I never thought of it that way. I tried freezing peppers whole in a plastic bag and they were mush when they thawed. So do you cover it or is it exposed to the air? Thanks for contributing!!

    • @mainiacgardener5628
      @mainiacgardener5628 7 лет назад +3

      Any fruit like peppers need to be at least cut in half so that the water can evaporate. Lay them out on the cardboard cut side up in the open air of the fridge. When re-hydrated they are very close to fresh in taste and texture.

    I sun dry tomatoes and goji berries on a screen in the back window of my car while I am at work; goji takes longer than my 'Principe borghese' tomato slices (which dry in a normal, 8-hr work day in NE Ohio; in sunnier, hotter climates I am sure it wouldn't take long at all.)

    I’m growing two goji plants from Baker Creek in Colorado at 5500 ft elevation. I’m growing them directly in the ground and they will come back each year. One thing is they resent heavy soil amendments so I use wood chips but don’t top dress with compost like the rest of the garden.

    Wow! They're like stunningly red little jewels. Sorry to see you didn't end up with the dried results you wanted; however, I think they would make wonderful little raw superfood juice shots if you're into that kind of thing! I think I'll try them out for my zone 5 garden this next summer :)

  • @ellenferguson1860

    I had the same problem trying to dehydrate my goji berries! However, I did not dip them in boiling water or lemon juice first. I will try that. I am not fond of the taste when fresh. I actually tried to cut them down one year, since they take up so much space, but the next year they came back with a vengeance. I have made peace with them, and eat a few fresh every year. But it does seem like a waste, since they are so nutritious. Making them into a chutney is a good idea.

    I have tried Gogi Berries twice. The first time was from seed and the second time from live plants sent to me from Trixie. Both had the misfortune of being cared for by Terri Blackthumb, as she is known around here on the reservation. I may give them a third try next season.

    I have a smaller, simpler dehydrator and can dehydrate 2 lbs of thinly sliced carrots in 7 to 8 hours but the temperature stays around 135-140 degrees F. I think yours would work fine if you just raised the temperature. You just need to experiment a bit and I think you will be very happy with it.

  • @joansmith3492
    @joansmith3492 7 лет назад +2

    Fruits dehydrate at 135 to 145 degrees. If you poked your berries with a knife point they would have dried faster. It usually takes 24 hrs for me to dehydrate stuff in Texas. I have dehydrated figs, persimmons, onions, peppers, eggplant and cucumbers. Dehydrated food does not need refrigerating and lasts 15+ yrs (if you vacuum seal it). So in the end dehydrating can be very energy efficient. Don't give up on dehydrating! I don't recognize your machine. What kind is it?

    I have about 100 goji berry plants that I started a few months ago in seed cells but they are growing very slow. Any suggestions on what kind of fertilizers are good for goji berries

    • @Latebloomershow
      @Latebloomershow  Год назад

      If they are still in cells, you need to use a liquid fertilizer, and I would choose fish fertilizer that is natural or organic, if possible. If you have a nursery nearby, ask someone who knows. Berries usually want something more acidic.

  • @thehealingberrygarden9608
    @thehealingberrygarden9608 7 лет назад +2

    Very interesting video. You were extremely lucky to get gojiberryplants that were so loaded with berries in the first year. Normally they take much longer to get established. In my garden they always struggle a little bit because of the heavy clay soil and the many rainfalls. I too prefer to eat them raw or frozen (they taste even better when frozen). Traditional Chinese Medicin talks about eating ca. 20 grams a day as a medicine, so freezing a little bowl as a vitamin pill so to say will get you a long way. :-)

    I keep it in the freezer.it freezes well.
    Don't sun dried ,it will lose its red colour.
    Put it in oven.and keep the light on with door slightly open,
    It will take few days to dry .the colour would be bright red.

    I'm also growing a goji bush this year. I heard they do best in a soil with a ph above 7. I think my soil must be too acidic so i added a little baking soda to it. If you have any information on the best soil conditions for this plant, it would help a lot.

      My 2 gojis are in their 4th year and have finally taken off. Last season they produced some berries, looks like this year they’ll produce a lot! I let stinging nettle stay put in the garden around the gojis and raspberries (after pulling much of the nettles out last fall so they didn’t totally take over) apparently nettles are a great companion for fruiting plants! I live in Calgary, AB, a very tough climate for the serious growing of anything.

    I can't seem to get a handle on how many varieties of Goji berries there are. I watched a video where a guy had 7 varieties of Goji berry plants. In the replies, he happened to fess up that only one variety tasted good. I've read some replies from folks who have been growing Goji for years without getting berries, or they have a bad flavor I had just ordered some Goji berry plants, and I don't know the variety. I hope it's edible. Which variety of Goji berry tastes the best? And where does a gardener obtain them? So far, I've watched a gaggle of videos about Goji berries, but none gives out information about varieties and how they taste. They say they taste great, which is not informative, as far as flavor goes. From the replies that I've read, the varieties "Phoenix Tears" and "Mountain Goji" taste good.

    I grow all kinds of stuff and have for years, you can see my channel to see. So I'm at the very least a decent gardener. Goji berries I hear from so many people, even here in my climate, that goji berries are super easy and one of the only things that these brown thumbs folks can grow. I have been growing them for years without success! It's so weird to me. This year I finally got them to grow decently, and they taste bad! Got the plants from Dave Wilson Nursery and my friend's got the same plants and his taste good (normal taste for fresh goji berries.) Normally my fruits and veggies taste the best (by far.)
