I personally like Kraken but it's because it's a little more subdued; and I imagine it much like the kraken itself, you don't know it's there, seeing a hint, then suddenly your boats gone ..
+Darklord Noctis in the end, it has more to do with slavery than pirates unfortunately. Pirates didn't really drink rum, the British Navy did. Pirates drink brandy, madeira wine, port and anything else they could get their hands on, but rum wasn't really a popular one.
+Darklord Noctis yeah, Marketing wins out in changing the history of normal human perception. However, folks like Jeff Berry and other cocktail historians have set the record straight. For good reading, checkout Potions of the Caribbean by Jeff Beachbum Berry--nice historic Island recipes along with some great history.
Darklord Noctis watched this video and came to the conclusion the guy with the glasses is a douche . Keep it professional! The Lash is NOT offensive. If a name bothers you then get off RUclips
My guess is that the idea behind the name "The Lash" has to do with the punishments implemented on ships during the time period that most people would associate with your typical Pirate. As far as it's association with the drink itself, I would assume they are trying to market it as a somewhat "punishing" rum, being of a strong flavor or a higher alcohol content or something of that nature.
Winston Chruchill said a famous quote about the traditions of the Royal Navy being "Rum, Sodomy and the Lash" so perhaps this is where The Lash rum got it's name, but I don't know. That's the first thing I thought when I heard the name.
I think Kraken maybe my favorite of all the new alcohols I've discovered in the past year. We now know, thanks to all the reviews. you are a closet Bacardi fan so how does Bacardi Black compare to Kraken? Thanks. These reviews help a lot.
Kraken is my favourite drink. A store by my house started selling it after I asked them to get some in, and now they have a permanent $15 off sale on it (It's usually $60). I'll need to try the CM black for myself.
I think Doug was a little harsh on the Lash. I think what they were going for was the whole "sailor mythos" of dark rum (Captain Morgan, Sailor Jerry's, Kraken) and the common punishment for sailors was a whipping with the lash. Maybe they should have made that more clear.
Have you tried Kilo Kai spiced rum? I just heard about it. I don't think its anything special but I looked into and the way its flavor was described made it sound good. "A rum for aficionados and novices alike because its complexity and unique blend of anise, vanilla, banana, cherry, nutmeg and orange flavors allow it to be mixed in your favorite cocktail or enjoyed straight."
Have you heard of mixing kraken with horchata? It's something a buddy of mine did before a party and now has become a staple in his fraternity, I would like to know what you think of that?
Kraken is my go-to sit-back-and-sip rum. I bought it from novelty at first, but surprisingly, the flavor is quite good; ended up really enjoying it. Gotta try Morgan Black. Thanks for the good video, y'all.
Tried the Kraken rum and it is good! I have only had rum in mixed drinks so this was a new experience. I bought coke to go with it, but found out its much better straight on ice. It was $15.99 for 750 mil at CVS in Indiana.
In most provinces, alcohol sale is done by government ran stores. In Alberta however, it is privatized so it's a lot cheaper here. Even in the small holiday town i live in, where mark up is huge, it still only costs $30. If I go into the city, it's a lot less.
I have not actually tried Black. I live in Scotland so rum is limited in supermarkets and most spirit shops ect tend to lean towards single malts (ofc!). Not that I am complaining about that, love a good dram ;) I can get it online though, only thing is Kraken is 40% here and Black is 37.5% over here!
Both are among my favorite bottles, but I actually prefer CMB. After regular CM, I was completely shocked. I get pick up a whole load of vanilla in it, which I simply love.
I have been drinking Kraken for a while, but I am keen to try CM Black. My favourite way to drink Kraken is in a Dark and Stormy! How would a Dark and Stormy taste with CM Black?
i finally got a bottle of captain black and i like it. it's definitely got quite a bit of alcohol burn/heat but w/o that alcohol flavor like vodka. tastes like the regular spiced rum but with 4 or 5 times as much flavor and the charred barrel taste which is different to me in a rum but i kinda like it. i just wish it were priced better. kraken here in indiana is 20 a bottle. captain black is always 23-26 wherever i look but i snagged it for 19 at walmart :)
What do you think of Sailor Jerry's? I used to drink Captain Morgan spiced rum (just the regular off the shelf.) When I tried Sailor Jerry 's it tasted very smooth and very oak-ey and vanilla.
Sailor is better than original captain morgan, but I like Kraken better than Sailor and the rest of the spiced rums all play their own role (aside from Oakheart, which I've not taken a liking to very much)
Drinks are so expensive here in Australia! Our $ is stronger than the US but these drinks still cost between $35 to $45 at our cheapest bottle shop (although we call them bottle-o's here). Subscribed!
I can confirm the mojito one, made a few on new years, ran out of bacardi superior, and thought I'd have a go with the Capt I used for the rumballs, I switched the sugar from white to raw too, gave it a dirty brown colour but the taste was so different, might make the change permanent.
I am a Capt. Morgan fan, nice to hear the results of the Kraken review. NICE comparison all around, I will have to pick up some of it. I have been waiting to try it. Private Stock is awesome I do agree. Can't wait till LIVE on Friday!
i used to be all on the Havana dark rum, but since randomly got a bottle of Kraken as it was cheaper and wow, Havana is still great but Kraken is great sippin and mixed. love it, goes well with a good smoke also
Hey Derek. Out of Oakheart, regular Captain, Sailor, and Cruzan 9, what order would you put them in from best to worst? I personally like Oakheart the best, although I haven't tried 9 yet, mostly because its sweeter to me and I get a lot of caramel and vanilla. Also I wanted to get your thought on an infusion I'm doing. It's Oakheart with Bosc pear and a little bit of cinnamon. Sounds good or a waste to infuse something that already has flavor?
also ive been craving kraken for so long and it is really good straight. but i do want to add something to it though not like a sweet soda or something that takes/hides its flavors. im not really familiar with bitters and havent really seen them in the stores around me. which ones are good for this particular rum. and is it better to get the alcoholic or non-alcoholic?
Prefer the Morgan, because of the vanilla.....gives it more character and less bitter than the coffee / Kraken. Though I do add a little Angostino with my natural (bio) cola (with Morgan). Gonna try both with just ice, lime and few drop of Angostino this weekend, as a sipper.
Thanks for the opinions. Never considered trying Kraken straight, as Captain is horrible. But I came looking for a review of Captain 1671 - If you can find some, I'd love to hear your review!
@Derrick Schommer: Nope, I bought it here in Switzerland. Strange... I like The Kraken though it has a bit of a strange aftertaste, though not that it's ruining it.
Didnt realize you did this on the 7th :b. I've owned a bottle of each and finished them off. Ive tried Kraken with Coke and Dr pepper. Between both sodas i would say it tastes the best with Dr. Pepper in my opinion. At a Halloween party the host to my surprise made hot apple cider with Kraken. It was delicious but you dont really get that much of an alcohol taste. Captain M Black ive only had by itself and with Coke. Both of them have great taste though. In the end i would just buy both again XD
Kraken at one of my local liquor stores goes $18 for a 750 ml, and $20 for a 1.5 L. I reccomend it to everyone, especially fellow college students on a budget.
Thanks a lot for your advice ! I think the kraken would be fine for cocktail "Damoiselle". I'll try, and I tell you it is appropriate for this cocktail.
hey guys I just picked up a bottle of Black Magic Black spiced rum to compare with Kraken, which is my go to. Black Magic is less refined, not as smooth, but has a much stronger spice flavor, not so strong on the vanilla, more licorice and pepper flavors
+Common Man Cocktails it is a very new product, and has a label that is obviously trying to mimic Kraken ala Shellback. (BTW) Shellback did not impress me at all, very weak spice profile.
+Chris HydraBob M well, keep in mind, rum was a hot bed of distilling in North American in the colonial days, it's not out of the realm of possibility.
As I kept watching you said captain black has some vanilla kick... might have to give it a go I'm just looking for something similar to the kraken made in Mexico.... and if I was just gonna drink rum with water how much water should you add per shot of rum
not sure, it's not a quality most rums contain. Outside of something like Pink Pigeon (Mauritian Rum) because it's infused with vanilla spice. That's not typical. So, nothing else really comes to mind.
Common Man Cocktails if your ever in Mexico and try the kraken you'll see why I ask.. they make it sooooooooooo good there I emailed the company and they said it's the same formula as the 47% kraken here but it's just 35% there and that you can taste more of the flavor because it's lower in alcohol and they said the black label kraken made here in the states is a completely diff blend of runs :(:(:(
I have a question, is it smart or "advisable" to slam down a bottle of rum? (my friend tends to do that and pass out!) although I can't blame a man for passing out after consuming like what forty dollars worth of rum? but moving on, my friend really likes rum and says "slamming it down is his favorite way to drink it" from what I figure he likes drinking till unconscious!
thevashfan12392 well, I guess I just don't see how anything you wrote would be smart or advisable. I'd never advise someone or inspire them to be an idiot. And, drinking until you pass out is right up there on the idiot scale next to playing in traffic ;-)
Goddamnit, being a spirits-lover in Australia is fucking draining financially. 700 mL of Kraken goes for roughly $50 USD here. 700 mL of Captain Morgan Black costs roughly $37. Ridiculous.
Interesting. Everybody's tasters are diff. I gave away my bottle of Kraken after I bought it and tried a few times. It just tasted "empty" to me. That's the best descriptor of its lack of character that I can come up with..."empty." I'm used to Capt Morgan Black and I expect and look for the harshness and sweetness before it settles down in the ice. Drink Capt Morgan Black on the rocks. I do. ps: Would not ruin either Rum with any mixer, except Baileys, which actually kinda works for some reason. ;)
+Thomas Bayes I guess, I just subscribe to "better ingredients make better cocktails", so I'd probably go with Captain Morgan Sherry Cask. It's freaking great.
ScopedPewPew becoming life-threateningly alcoholic isnt an easy thing to do. if youre just tasting alcohol, youll be fine. the only way youll become an alcoholic is if you are getting shitfaced every day for a few weeks.
Yeah, I find it highly unlikely that a rum label would attempt to name themselves after something so offensive. It's more probable that they just named it after the old quote. Either way, still haven't tried it. Would like to, but not one of my friends have ever heard of it (I've only seen it a few times at Spec's and whatever that junkie liquor store was called...).
Never had The Lash, but from what I've read is that it's name comes from the quote "rum, sodomy, and the lash" or "rum, buggery, and the lash." Makes since, since it's an old British navy phrase about rum, sex, and getting lashed.
Maybe Kraken and Captain morgan changed their recipe. But I get That the kraken is somewhat "Smoother" and the captain morgan black spiced has This vanilla taste and smell all the way up front and in ur face, and is a bit more spicy. but when I have to pick one out of these two I'll Go captain morgan black all day long! I love That Vanilla smell and taste, and there is a lot of cinnamon in it aswell, captain morgan black spiced is the only Rum I really Liked Drinking neat out of all Other Rums I've tried so far (El dorado 12, captain morgan gold, dark, the kraken) I've always been a bigger fan of Whisky, and Love a good smoky islay or Dark sherry cask malt, or high proof Bourbon. But the captain morgan Black spiced really lacks something (In a good way) That I dislike about rums. This weird funky artificial sweetness to it that I find hard to discribe, but I get sick when I smell or taste it. Maybe someone could give me any other suggestions That are similair to Black spiced. As I really wanna get more into rum, But I so far only had 2 good experiences being Black spiced and the El dorado 12.
for months now i have been having dreams where i mix one of these into a really nice spicy ginger beer. not really a coctail but i have been really curious about how that will taste. will be buying one of these soon, just for that!
Iam a little late to this video lol but my absolutely favorite drink is with a black spiced rum and either ginger ale or beer (dark n stormy). Hope you do try and enjoy 😉
there is always a chance, just not always the time :) I like blackstrap, I can tell you that. But I use it more sparingly because it's so much more molasses sweet than Goslings.
Derrick! I am on th esame page as you! after drinking Capt Black, there is no reason to ever drink regular Captain EVER again! and Private Stock is pretty badass. Have you tasted the Sherry Oak finish? i like it on the rocks…enjoy bro!
oh my friend, you must hit up our channel main page and take a look at our Reviews playlist :) Captain Morgan Limited Edition, Sherry Oak Finish, Review
I love the kraken... but recently I bought a bottle in Mexico and it had a white label like the one here in the us this is 94 proof but it was 70 proof like the new black labeled kraken here in the us... BUT the bottle from Mexico tasted better then both!???!! Can you guys tell me why and is there anyway to get a bottle from Mexico without going to Mexico???? It had wayyyy more vanilla and was smoother and just the best taste ever
I can't really tell you all the in's and outs for Kraken as I don't work for the brand, but I'm sure their twitter account or PR company can help you out if you needed more in-depth information. What I can tell you is that labels and recipes that are exported/imported are not always going to be the same. Even here in the states some brands have lower proof for certain states (this is especially true with beer sales in places like Oklahoma)
Wrong. The reason slaves were bought to the south was for working on tobacco and cotton plantations. In the West Indies and Caribbean the plantations were mainly sugar plantations. Sugar, of course, is the basis of rum. Same as in Brazil where enslaved people were brought to work on sugar plantations. They have Cachaça which is essentially rum (also sugar liquor). History lesson, my friend.
Crazy accident try 1 shot kracken 2 shots monster/Import.The taste is very smooth shocking I call it a (mojo Jojo) Serving with a slice of lemon and ice.
dude. "everytime i think of rum, i think of slavery"
must be a fun guy at parties.
lol
That's one of those weird ass comments that's just funny tbh lol. You know... everyone has that friend with like... borderline aspergers xD
@@nexusclarum8000 not really. As someone with aspergers, that comment would have been made by snowflake liberals.
@@joshuahuf9747 mmm... maybe... I could imagine a snowflake liberal being triggered by such a comment, too.
@@nexusclarum8000 you know when I said that comment I ment "when I think of rum I think of slavery"
I drank half a bottle of Kraken last night and here I am hungover as shit laying in bed watching reviews lol
lol
Cassius Animus kraken is dangerous, I don't drink it cause I always black out off it
I blacked out once with half a bottle
Half a bottle of a litre or 750ml
Half a bottle hahahaha.
I personally like Kraken but it's because it's a little more subdued; and I imagine it much like the kraken itself, you don't know it's there, seeing a hint, then suddenly your boats gone ..
:)
How does rum make you think of slavery?haha makes me think of pirates.
+Darklord Noctis in the end, it has more to do with slavery than pirates unfortunately. Pirates didn't really drink rum, the British Navy did. Pirates drink brandy, madeira wine, port and anything else they could get their hands on, but rum wasn't really a popular one.

All i know is Kraken and rootbeer is the shit... my life is complete
Try making a "fidel castro" with Kraken. 4cl Kraken, 2cl Lime juice and fill with ginger ale! Nice and cold with alot of ice, really blew my mind!
Thank you for explaining that so I would not have too!
the lash would probably be a reference to a common punishment onboard ships, pirate or privateering corporal punishment abounds.
yeah, probably
I bought two bottles of the Kraken on sale for $15.99 apiece at Safeway here in California. It's some damn good rum.
"I can drink this sh*t all night"
Hahaha! Gold.
Kraken makes a pretty good rum n' coke though! I like a strong mix though - about 1:1.5 rum to coke!
This really helped me choose to buy kraken today. Thanks!
Tried the Kraken a few days ago, tastes pretty nice and smooth, smells exactly like creme soda at first.
Why am I watching this I'm just on a RUclips binge
+Jack Scott fair enough!
I'm on an alcohol binge so you could be doing worse bro. Love all you guys 🍻.
I would bet that "the lash" is a reference to naval punishment, rather than slavery
Winston Chruchill said a famous quote about the traditions of the Royal Navy being "Rum, Sodomy and the Lash" so perhaps this is where The Lash rum got it's name, but I don't know. That's the first thing I thought when I heard the name.

Try Sailor Jerry Caribbean Rum ..Its very very good
Fuck yeah Kraken. I love mixing and drinking Kraken straight!

Hi Doug. Captain Morgan original is the only spiced rhum avalaible around my area, with Bacardi Oak. Which one do you think is better ?
why is the rum gune?
Not sure if it was out at this time but Kraken came out with Stormy ginger beer for it's version of a Dark N' Stormy, the "Perfect Storm".
no, I don't think so
Kraken is my go-to sit-back-and-sip rum. I bought it from novelty at first, but surprisingly, the flavor is quite good; ended up really enjoying it. Gotta try Morgan Black. Thanks for the good video, y'all.
I haven't tasted Captain Morgan Black Spiced but Kraken I have. For me it had a huge burn, but I definitely liked the vanilla after taste.
kraken is overproof I believe, so it should have some burn. Here is my most recent review of it: ruclips.net/video/BgpFsvyIvKA/видео.html

How would a Dark and Stormy taste with CM Black?
by the way you guys were right. captain black makes a great rum and coke. rum and pepsi in my case
I love these two rums, Kraken over ice is great it really mellows the spice out
Would it work just to drop a few cubes of ice instead of adding water?
BeastOf Bodom to taste test? No, not really, ice masks the aromas and makes it cold, which then numbs your tongue to the flavor (and alcohol)
i finally got a bottle of captain black and i like it. it's definitely got quite a bit of alcohol burn/heat but w/o that alcohol flavor like vodka. tastes like the regular spiced rum but with 4 or 5 times as much flavor and the charred barrel taste which is different to me in a rum but i kinda like it. i just wish it were priced better. kraken here in indiana is 20 a bottle. captain black is always 23-26 wherever i look but i snagged it for 19 at walmart :)

Yes and thanks for answering ... and quick ? whats you opinion on buchanan"s scotch whiskey ...and is there any good cocktails using that ?
Prefer the Morgan, because of the vanilla.....gives it more character and less bitter than the coffee / Kraken. Though I do add a little Angostino with my natural (bio) cola (with Morgan). Gonna try both with just ice, lime and few drop of Angostino this weekend, as a sipper.
Thanks for the opinions. Never considered trying Kraken straight, as Captain is horrible. But I came looking for a review of Captain 1671 - If you can find some, I'd love to hear your review!
okay, if I see it I'll see if I can get it.
can you test some of the cheaper scotch whiskey's.. like johnnie walker black/red/blue or J&B rare or dewars scotch.. any cheaper ones neat??
Thank you! You are great with point views and opinions. I love craft beer and want to know more about rum. Please keep doing this!
WAIT, if i have to put water in the kraken to experience the full dept of the flavor, how much water should i put if I have 5 ounce's of rum?
20% usually, so probably about 1 oz. Especially with an overproof rum.
Great channel, I appreciate how informative and REAL you are
@Derrick Schommer: Nope, I bought it here in Switzerland. Strange... I like The Kraken though it has a bit of a strange aftertaste, though not that it's ruining it.
You guys ever try the black label kraken?
In canada we Get Private stock just about the same price as the cheaper one ... never going back to spiced one.
In canada, a 750ml of private stock costs 30,75$. still worths it
What would you consider the best ways to enjoy the kraken?
Thanks
Morgan Black is pretty good. Only too intense coconut flavor. Not as bad as Gold does with the vanilla though
I feel like a total noob but why do you add water when you do the tasting?
Hi Derrick, have u tried the Havana Club 7YO? if u have, is it any good and how does it compare to other brands?

Kraken at one of my local liquor stores goes $18 for a 750 ml, and $20 for a 1.5 L. I reccomend it to everyone, especially fellow college students on a budget.
Kraken mixed in a one dimensional cocktail is a quality drink. CM Black with multiple pairings in a complex cocktail will get the job done.
which one is better for coke?
Thanks a lot for your advice ! I think the kraken would be fine for cocktail "Damoiselle". I'll try, and I tell you it is appropriate for this cocktail.
hey guys I just picked up a bottle of Black Magic Black spiced rum to compare with Kraken, which is my go to. Black Magic is less refined, not as smooth, but has a much stronger spice flavor, not so strong on the vanilla, more licorice and pepper flavors

I don't understand why people don't like Brussel sprouts or broccoli.
I prefer vegetables waaayyyy over fruit.
sorry :)

+Thomas Bayes I guess, I just subscribe to "better ingredients make better cocktails", so I'd probably go with Captain Morgan Sherry Cask. It's freaking great.
ScopedPewPew becoming life-threateningly alcoholic isnt an easy thing to do. if youre just tasting alcohol, youll be fine. the only way youll become an alcoholic is if you are getting shitfaced every day for a few weeks.
sweatshirt029 huh, and here I thought that was called College :)
+sweatshirt029 More than a few weeks.
Once you go black, you never go back....
what do you think of captain morgan dark vs captain morgan black
what is captain morgan dark? I believe "black" is there dark.
its differnent in the uk
Yeah, I find it highly unlikely that a rum label would attempt to name themselves after something so offensive. It's more probable that they just named it after the old quote. Either way, still haven't tried it. Would like to, but not one of my friends have ever heard of it (I've only seen it a few times at Spec's and whatever that junkie liquor store was called...).
"...I like wood...."???
Seriously, really good video. Thank you.
no problem :)
I really enjoyed watching you guys
Doug getting Butthurt over "The Lash" is the best part of the video.
i get kraken for $12.99/750ml. makes it my go to spiced rum.
BiteThis I get it for free #swipernoswipey
Whoa how is it that cheap here in canada its $31.95 for 750ml
@@jrhinktown9171 i also live in canada and it costs $16.99/ 750ml
as for your opinion of black vs regular morgan, I COULD NOT AGREE MORE
then you are my friend! :)
How do you train your nose
Well that's just wrong. So does everything generally cost more? How come?
for months now i have been having dreams where i mix one of these into a really nice spicy ginger beer. not really a coctail but i have been really curious about how that will taste. will be buying one of these soon, just for that!
Iam a little late to this video lol but my absolutely favorite drink is with a black spiced rum and either ginger ale or beer (dark n stormy). Hope you do try and enjoy 😉
Any chance on reviewing cruzan blackstrap. I'm curious on your thoughts.you like goslings.
there is always a chance, just not always the time :) I like blackstrap, I can tell you that. But I use it more sparingly because it's so much more molasses sweet than Goslings.

Can you do any cocktail recipes using kracken
Overall, I think the Kraken is better if you consider the price but I've never had Captain Morgan Black.
Even here in the states some brands have lower proof for certain states (this is especially true with beer sales in places like Oklahoma)
they really wont tell me anything ive tried but hardly any response if you guys tried it oud b hooked
First where in Germany you get this for this prices @ Nils!,
Kraken and a slash of cane sugar soda. That's my go to drink.
thanks for the reply
Crazy accident try 1 shot kracken 2 shots monster/Import.The taste is very smooth shocking I call it a (mojo Jojo) Serving with a slice of lemon and ice.
@least you were being brutally. honest when you said the lash....great review.
I like your Glenn Cairne glasses!
How much water do you add to a shot
I don't know what you mean...? water with a shot?
everybody, remember that you should always add one ice cube to your glass of rum. Like they say in the vid, it really does make a difference
Never had it. Thinking of getting some tomorrow.
