I was surprised to see engine oil that was dark red. I always associate red oil with transmission fluid, so I've learned a new thing today. Like you, I'm dismayed that the engine oil filter is SO tight! What kind of T-Rex tightened that in the first place? LOL! The way that engine "gallops" when you try to start it makes me wonder whether or not the compression is at an even level across all 8 cylinders; perhaps a cylinder or two are low on compression. That starter sounds very strained, too. Wishing you all the success in diagnosing her and getting her back out on the road. That is an enviable wagon, and I would enjoy driving her across the continent and seeing the sights. Aloha...from an island...without road trips, lol!
Find and print out a diagram that shows the firing order of the engine. Check that the spark plugs go to the right connections on the distributor. The drivers side front cylinder is number 1. You can remove the plug and crank the engine a small amount at a time while holding your finger on the spark plug hole. When you feel pressure against your finger or thumb, it is on its compression stroke. That will help you verify the position of number 1 connection on the distributor cap. You can also un-snap the clips that hold the distributor cap on and see where the rotor is pointing. It needs to be pointing at the distributor connection that has the wire going to cylinder number 1. You neve know what someone else has done to an engine trying to get it to start. They sometimes get spark plug wire connected to the distributor incorrectly.
Put something like Marvel Mystery Oil in the spark plug holes and let it sit overnight soaking, this will help free up the rings. Be sure to remove any excess after soaking, before reinstalling the plugs, Failure to do so can cause the engine to hydrolock, and cause severe damage to the engine.
My 72 Chevrolet wagon has points now it's backfiring doesn't run right I parked it I'm going to convert it to HEI in my 76 LTD I'm going to convert it to HEI. That's usually what is the best thing to do get it running and then convert it to high energy ignition
2 things check your compression if you haven't already and that starter is not spinning very fast You may need to rebuild the starter or just get a new one. Cause it should be turning over way quicker than that
