between this and the usb pass through they really seem to be going all in on mix and matching. very nice
Not really sure why Asetek had to invent-the-wheel, and not simply stick with the standard 6-hole arrangement which could also fit custom or car wheels as well.
I think the solution from Simagic is way more practical in that case. Just recently got the GT-Pro Hub with it's standard 6-hole mounting for any wheel rim out there.
Other than the three central encoders - you don't compromise on anything else. And if you consider the GT-Pro(K) option - then you only lose one rotating encoder.
Obviously if you have Asetek eco-system then it would make sense to get one like that, but still, I think it could be better if they just stuck with universal rim setup IMHO.
Yea Simagic has by far the most customer friendly options at the moment. Standardized QR and Standardized wheel pattern. Compatible wheels can be had all across the board and for great prices without any issues.
Yes GT-Pro hub its better solution
It is way more stiff and sturdy then the 6-hole pattern. That was the reason. You can still use almost all USB Wheels with the QR from Asetek.
Thanks Davey Boy ! I enjoy everything you give us Dave. Im so curious about Asetek as Im currently running Moza r9. Those wheels look great ! Thanks again :)
Great stuff Dave, went ahead and ordered myself a la prima box with the comfort+ wheel, oh and a forte wheelbase and some QR's for the wheels i allready have. It was time to finally upgrade to a DD, asetek feels like they have the best upgrade pathway in mind, for instance i can install a QR on my cube controls F-pro and use it wirelessly with the internal usb passthru. No more charging the battery and hoping the bluetooth doesnt act up during a race.
You'll love it 😁
Well, these look lovely 😍 Sadly, ill need to wait. As this week I'll be buying the La Prima base and wheel for 880 euros/£770 and will go over my budget if i choose one of these new wheels. But, definitely pick one up later on, for sure.
Christmas came early for Dave. Yes Asetek.. such an intelligent design.. the modularity is super smart. ....
😂 exactly my first thought… he’s bringing in the pizza! 👏 I wish you had used a pizza cutter to open the boxes! 😊 what a lineup by Asetek! 💪 have a good week, Dave! 😊👋
Went for an Asetek base over Simucube because you can get these great value first-party wheels. For Simucube, they have the Tahko which is amazing but also super expensive. Asetek will have an Invicta line eventually, but they also have lower priced lines, I don't need a €700 wheel for Rally. And you can't find a better third party button box for €280 (or rather €210 because you'd need to add the €70 Simucube QR) than the La Prima with all its dials and functionality
For a simucube you could get an Ascher, Cube Controls, GSI wheels, there's unlimited options, their QR is really simple so you can take any wheel and just slap it on.
@@tomimar2001 I have a GSI wheel on my Asetek base... again, there's no better button box for €210 to slap on a Simucube.
@@tomimar2001 I just got the SC2 pro w/ a Tahko wheel and absolutely love it so far. Haven’t looked into other wheels yet though, but I’ll eventually want a round leather wheel for rally. Do you know of any good, affordable wireless options?
Thx for 5% discount Dave and a great channel
It looks like a very good solution Dave.
The prices seem pretty reasonable too.
yes the price of a full rim form other brand :))
Nice looking button box and wheel rims. It looks like you can only fit Asetek wheel rims on their button box. Because they put the encoders in the center,They voided out the universal 70mm bolt pattern so you probably can’t use any aftermarket wheel rims.
Which is exactly why this isn't the "game changer" people want to claim it is. If anything, it's a step backwards. They made a button box that only works with their rims, and vice versa. Most manufacturers that make button boxes make them fit a universal standard so you can use any rim you like. Can someone please explain to me why making your products more restrictive is "game changing" and "innovative"?
They already have one of the best systems to fit any wheel rim you want to the quick release. I just hope this is strong without any real flex.
@@kerrwharrie4385 If they release a grip set so the box can act as a formula rim, I can see it being a nice alternative to having to buy a formula rim and then a round rim, but as it stands, I don't see how it's better than a universal 70mm hub either, unless you really need a lot of encoders (which if I'm racing a car with a round rim, I usually don't)
Very nice, Davey.
I'm more impressed you letting the wife spend 120quid on a kettle, I nearly fell over when she brought ours back with smeg on the front 😂
She bought the matching toaster too. I was wounded 🤣
@DaveCamYT noooo I would have cried! 😆 🤣
But if you weren't sponsored you be spending 500 minimum for round wheel/ button box!
Oh man, I don't know what to do. Fanatec has massive black friday deals right now, but this Asetek solution is amazing. I don't know what to do!
I hope you will use this in a video soon would love to see how it performs.
Thank you Dave! You just made me change my mind regarding the wheel I want to get. Instead of Formula Forte it will be open D shape Forte, size matters LOL
Very good stuff coming from Asetek. Wish I could afford any of it. Lol
good price on the wheels and buttons
Love this from Asetek.. Cheers Dave is there a big difference in weight between the f1 to the open D, you showed about 13 minutes in when you got sidetracked?
I like that the button box gives people options, but honestly this doesn't do it for me. I'd much rather have a *cheap* round wheel option without buttons for the Asetek QR, so that I can use the normal La Prima or Forte formula style wheels for when I need those buttons / dials, and easily switch to a round one for drifting / rally / cruising where I won't need any buttons anyway. I could get a simple wheel and use the Asetek QR of course, but that QR would be twice as much as the wheel itself
And? If your wheel is cheap it's very likely for other components to be significantly more expensive than the cheapest part.
It would be better to hava a cheap QR without ectronics for asetek, not just the 150 one
"obviously you get a bit of play in that.." you dumpling Dave. :D
I want to see a kevlar button box also seems like they could make some handles that bolt on the button box and could be more like your wheel
Hey Dave! I have the gt omega prime cockpit and noticed you have the asetek universal wheelbase front mount, wanted to know how you like that mount? I’m looking to get one with zero flex and hoping that will work. Also do you know if it fits a simagic alpha U wheelbase?
They all look great! You need to be careful opening boxes with knives though!
Only an idiot would cut themselves though 😁
@@davecamm Absolutely 🤣🤣
At the beginning of the video, I thought Dave was coming with Pizzas....😁
If they made a button box that I could put a 300mm gt3 wheel on and also a 280mm F wheel, I would buy their bundle
love this product, its just that orange color puts me off buying one, option would be nice. 🙂
How do these compare to the FORMULA 2.5v and WRC/BMW wheel from fanatec
Honestly I don't understand this technical design. Ok it allows a smooth blend of the hub and the rim... but apart from that, it's in opposition with their strategy from the beginning of opening the ecosystem. I would prefer a hub that allows any kind and brand of rim. And to blend it the same way for the design, they could have gone the fanatec rally hub way.
The website was a shit show this morning. I tried to put the forte button box in my cart. I wound up with three. I added the orange closed D and the open D, and when I went to the cart to fix it, I got a message saying there is only one orange closed D wheel and it's already in my cart. I fixed the count and went to check out and got a message saying the orange closed D is sold out. Given the cost of shipping ($90 for me), I will wait until all of the items are back in stock. It will also give me some time to appreciate and think about the Forte wheel I already have.
I would like to see formula style also , and maybe bigger and smaller diameter. But yeah , they look really good
They already have a formula style wheels with optional different grips so they will not add this to the new button boxes.
Hey Dave, which mic stand do you use in your sim room?
I use one of these 👍
amzn.to/40MPr7y
Asetek gave notice of an extraordinary general meeting yesterday, it will be on 5th Dec. Not typically a good sign, they are used as emergency meetings between businesses and shareholders for urgent matters like removal of directors or legal proceedings.
? These are wheels you can buy, not stock afaik.
@@EricW6800 the wheels you can buy increase/decrease the value of the stocks.
Sales can only help them indeed, but what does this have to do with this video?
sim racers seem obsessed these days with companies.
Have fun.
@@EricW6800 you assume a lot from a few words on screen. It makes sense to research if a company you buy expensive equipment from will continue to support them.
I assume little.
I even started my sentence with a clear ?
You finally answered you are worried.
So maybe be a bit clearer next time.
already sold out of the round wheel rims
Sold out after 45 minutes
330mm is good for a round rally wheel, but 300mm would be better on the open d shape for gt cars.
Let’s hope they come to console (Xbox X & ps5 ) soon.
All this new equipment sure makes it difficult to choos your first upgrade from an entry level setup. Will the weight of these new wheel rims and button boxes be an issue for the lower powered DD bases?
Not at all. The La Prima would handle these with ease 👍
Good morning dave
I'd like to have a simplified button box option, lighter for rally and drift
That's a great idea!
Dave I am planning to get into Sim Racing next year, how can I contact you directly? I'd like to do a podcast with you, discuss the sim racing with you from an absolute complete beginners perspective (me) and go from there... I am really excited, I hope I can talk to you soon.
nice kitchen! :))
Hello Dave is this modifiable for simcube?
I've no idea Mike tbh
Hi Dave, it certainly a good concept! but what happened to your four points non review😛😜
Ah, I hadn't tested these though. Different type of video 😁
Still deciding if I go simucube or asetek for the base, asetek wheels just look like toys compared to simucube wheels. But hen there is the price difference… I just wish they would have different colors and designs on their wheels and bases.
The wheels / rims look very decent irl. I think videos usually don't do it justice. Also you will see be able to buy cube/ascher wheels later because they will be supported with the asetek wheelbase.
You can use any wheel you like on the Asetek wheel bases now they have released the QR. 👍
Sweet kitchen, Dave
Is it genius or something we have all been asking for for years? 😂
Some would say Fanatec have been doing the same for years.
Yes but with Fanatec, they are you only option. With Asetek, they're one of a million, including DIY.
Plus with Fanatec, you can use their rims without their button module. I just wish more f their rims were compatible with their button module.
@@EikeSkyI'm unsure what you mean? That button box from asetek is only for asetek rims. The Fanatec hubs at least take a normal pcd wheel.
@@searching4x4campingfishing86 the Fanatec requires a Fanatec wheel/hub to function, whereas the other wheelbases still output the FFB. Fanatec don't advertise their hubs, and don't have the same embedded functionality as the Asetek wheels.
I totally agree, this implementation isn't as generic as the Fanatec hubs, but the other way of looking at it is you _have to_ use a Fanatec wheel or hub, whereas the Aseteks you don't. So the more specialised design on these wheels don't matter because you need never touch them. But if you want to stay in the Asetek ecosystem, they are more versatile choice and means you can have your formula and round rims with 1 button box (the expensive bit).
Fanatec did it way better u can use any steering wheel u want n it looks amazing, this is hideous and limited to a few wheels.
Nice but I'm confused. Suede is leather (actual leather) but Alcantara is obviously a synthetic material. So the fancy one is suede or Alcantara?
It's suede, but more hard-wearing than normal suede. Not sure how, but apparently so 😁
@@davecamm thanks!
I will take a 3 cheese thank you
Makin a proprietary system when there is already an established, open standard for existing wheel rims, tying you in to a specific set of items isn't a "master stroke". It's absolute bullshit. Especially when people are giving hem praise for the USB passthrough that prevents lockout they should be equally yelled at for doing this.
Anyone with experience with these button boxes and rims have input on how easy it is to access the buttons/encoders? I have medium hands and am afraid that I'll need to take my hand partially or fully off the wheel to reach some of them.
I don't have the biggest hands (they're as wide as they are long) and I have no issues 👍
@@davecamm Nice. Debating on getting this with the C rim or sticking with the formula wheel. I race mostly GT and LMP so it may make more sense to get the button box.
Just ordered the Invicta wheelbase with quick release and front mount. Thanks for the 5% off Dave!
I did consider getting the wheel but ultimately decided to order the cube controls f core.
Better in your pocket 😁
@@davecamm Thanks Dave, with the impressive slew rate I’ll expect to be over 5k in iRating this time next month. 😂😂
Easy peasy 😁
Also they don't look horrible like their current wheels
What their diameter is? There is no info about it on the website.
Sorry I should have mentioned it. 330mm 👍
I got my orange D shaped wheel Friday- super fast shipping to California- nice wheel but the stitching is so rough that I had to stop after half an hour of driving - I don’t really like wearing gloves- so to those of you who don’t like wearing gloves on leather wheels think twice before getting this. It rubbed my skin raw right where you grip it between thumb and index finger…. A little disappointed to be honest due to that
Seems to me like they’ve just tried to reinvent the wheel here… we’ve had universal hubs with the common 70mm central bolt pattern for years. Same 6 bolts (some only need 3) to switch a wheel as this design but universally compatible with almost any wheel on the market. To me the main benefit of this design is purely aesthetic. I must admit the rims are very reasonably priced by the looks of it though!
I also can’t help but feel they could have designed this to use 3 bolts. 6 seems excessive.
330mm is a little too large imo, would have been nice to see 300-310. Think I’ll get the la prima formula wheel for this reason.
Thats really cool, i hope other companies do something like this aswell, i just don't like the design of azetek.
Fanatec already do
At first I thought Asetek had sent you a few pizzas.
Shame not usable on other bases. They can make so much more opening up.
Damn Dave, nice kitchen 👌 Now the gf has ideas
They could have made it a standard 70mm pattern for use on any rim... they are acting like fanatec at this point. Poor form
This is OK for customization, but it is limiting to the wheel rims Asetek makes.
Well done Simagic! 😂
Isn't Fanatec doing it since some time now?
Yes they have but not at the same quality levels and pricing.
@@davecamm thank you for the clarification Dave. I really appreciate your contents and I learned a lot from them. You've been a great way to learn many things about iRacing (and Sim racing in general) when I started on the service one year ago. Keep pushing!
@davecam Congrats to the new foreign minister, welcome back. LOL ;-) Do you think he is ever mistaken for a top sim racer?
Haha, I've no idea but he's made my life a misery over the years 🤣
Looks similar to Fanatec wheels
Eh, they are all 330mm rims, I don't get it, no 320mm option & they still don't have GT Style rim around 300mm, personally If I moved to the Asetek wheel base I'd be buying third party wheels.
Bald bloke in glasses reviewing gadgets, is this Jason Bradbury's channel?
Cammus C5 👀
Could you imagine if they fitted!? That would be amazing!
@@EikeSky Wondering if it could be adapted with a mod. Good idea for Cammus to copy for the future.
@@JoeGaffey I've been dying to get my hands on a C5 to take apart and mod. I have the LP8 already and that's a fascinating model in itself.
@@EikeSky I was waiting on the LP8 but due to availability in my region went for the C5 instead. It's great so far but I miss the wheel changeability. Round would have been a better default.
Can anyone shed the light on wheel diameter
330mm 👍
@@davecamm thx for the reply
Well they look good i'll give them that but couple times you put on table and clicked the paddles, they sounded very cheap plastic. I'd like some clarification on material strenght they are built from would be nice. Now onto the price, in my opinion these are not entry level prices i mean come on. The one you priced at end for button box and rim at 499 euro that is 832 aussie bucks just for a wheel not to mention a base and peddles so not entry level at all. These are not for the average joe blow who wants to sim race, if this is you just stick to the logitech g29. If you have a full blown passion for sim racing and a wallet that can handle it then yer go for it and buy these over priced sim equipment.
these are extremely sturdy wheels. The Forte wheel is literally impossible to bend. Yes they use a little bit more plastic than competitors but the shifters do have a satisfying click/feel to them. A toy is something like the GT3 wheel from fanatec. That thing snaps under the DD1 or 2.
@@Synicaly Appreciate the info on the build mate. I still stand by it not being entry level at that price tho.
@Synicaly its not entry level their la prima is midlevel
Don't like the fact that this system traps you in the Asetek ecosystem, while an aftermarket 70mm rim costs less and can be used on any other brand button box and even in regular cars.
it's just a limited ecosystem, there's nothing interesting about it.
They have an adapter for brand agnostic wheels which removes that limitation. This is just there internal offerings. Ecosystem is gaining traction.
@@lukefisher328 Not overly, having to buy an adapter is just an extra step for a problem that wasn't needed we have had the standard 70mm bolt pattern on other brands for ages, meaning you could just go buy a actual real car rim (like your OMP's etc) and just bolt it on
there's nothing genius about this, all they have done is make a normal button plate require their proprietary wheels, basically more eco locking
Asatec toy rim 199,99€
Real OMP Superquadro 238,90€
I have chosen!
119.99
How is this a Master Stroke ? not being funny but Fanatec Simagic Asher Racing Simucube etc etc all have these and have had them for years. Nothing new here
They look like nice wheels, but I have to say, i can't stand stuff like this from manufacturers. It's over-engineering something for the simple sake of making things proprietary. what if i wanted to sell my Asetek base and move to a Fanatec base but wanted to keep my rim? I couldn't because it doesn't use the standard wheel rim mounting holes and the button box is fixed with the QR. whereas a Fanatec R330 v2 I could move that to a simucube compatible QR/button box system, and equally i could move a simucube compatible wheel to a fanatec system because they use largely standardise mounting systems.
It's nice if you're really happy within the ecosystem and never see yourself moving out of it, but otherwise it's a highly anti-consumer move to try and keep people locked in to their ecosystem.
They are expensive for what they are for similar money you can buy full rim even with branding like sparco or porsche rims from Fanatec , also the desing its ugly look lie a toy. Idk why Dave call them master stroke when its a money grab basicaly . Maybe on the half price they make a bit of sense but on thre price of complete rim they are no go
The wheel rims are 80 euros less than wheel rims from Fanatec. That's the clever part. Giving us (sim racers) something more affordable.
@@davecammits not true the rims from fanatec are from 129 Euro from asetek 119 Euro and you get just half a rim. The rim with genuie alcantara fro asetek its more expensive than sparco or porsche brandet wheels from fanatec. Its a interseting idea but not a master stroke.
Dear Dave, I've been an avid viewer of your videos and reviews, always appreciating your genuine and unbiased approach. This particular review, however, felt different and I have left a Dislike for the video. It felt somewhat similar to other channels I've seen, especially when covering Asetek products. It subtly promoted the product without explicitly disclosing it as a sponsored video, unlike an unbiased, unfiltered, and honest assessment that presents both pros and cons.
I'm willing to reconsider my feedback if I've misconstrued something, but this video struck a different chord compared to your usual style. All the best Dave, Jay"
It's not a sponsored video, that's why I didn't say it was a sponsored video, nor does it say on RUclips that this video contains paid promotions of any kind.
Maybe this is a good product if everyone is saying it is? Just a thought.
Thank you, Dave, for the quick response to my message. I appreciate it. Kind regards, Jay
1st 😂
Is it just me or does anyone else think asetek button box looks cheap and plasticy? Idk but those wheels do not look premium to me at all and look like something on a kids power wheels
Honestly, this just looks ridiculous. Cant understand how anyone would like it. Also the button box material looks very cheap
Many like it, I do
The button box material is a 100 times better than any other “plastic” button box made by others.
If you want a milled aluminium one, you have to pay double or more.
I’ve worked in the plastics industry for many years, it’s a reinforced high quality material with zero flex.
The moulding quality and wall thicknesses of these can’t be compared to others.
