SUVs are more popular because they are way more comfortable to sit in as well as significantly safer during a collision. I just financed a 2021 highlander hybrid, 99% of the time, I will be the only person in the vehicle, but I went with it over a sedan simply because of the seating comfort and ease of getting in and out of the vehicle. It also give me the option to have 3 other full sized adults as passengers comfortably and a few kids on top of that if ever needed, or the seats can be folded down to transport large items. I would agree with your assessment that other economical factors, such as rent/housing, are taking a larger chunk of a person/families earnings, leaving less for personal transportation budgeting.
I agree with your sentiment about SUV’s. Like I said, my last 3 new vehicles have been SUV/crossovers. And I like your reflection on how most to of the time their extra space goes unused. My Lexus RX was such a comfortable vehicle and the seating position, unbeatable. As far as safer: I don’t mean to impose, so it is just my opinion, their center of gravity is usually higher and the handling can’t match that of a sedan. Camry vs Highlander, the Camry would handle better. Maybe in the sense that it is a heavier vehicle so whatever it hits will be more advantageous? Maybe. Thank you for your input.
@@JuanCarlosLTO they do flip more easily, but their larger size allows for larger crumple zones to absorb impact damage, causing less physical trauma to the passengers.
@cybernoid001 yeah, that makes sense. Definitely worth some research. I’d say that car-based crossovers/suv have an advantage over body on frame; they handle closer to what a car would. I wish I could find a video from Savagegeese, (I think) where they talk about how cars nowadays are built tougher and better than before with reinforcements, etc with waistlines way higher than before and smaller glass, so more metal, less glass, more beams and they’d do way better in a worst case scenario accident but in return they’re full of blind spots etc which makes it harder to look out around. Sure, sensors and cameras help but obstructed they are. Then we have the electric mammoths, the heavy duty trucks that we buy for lifestyle reasons more than utility with such disparity in weight and size to other cars… 🤷🏻♂️
All the computer crap drives up car prices and most of it is not even necessary just add on tracking junk that distracts you! I rather buy a fuel efficient stripped down car that I can afford to buy and maintain than some overpriced computer garbage. Unfortunately that leaves me with buying a classic car from the 1960s that costs a lot due to rich collectors.
I feel the same way. I don’t know if I’d go as far as the 60’s though. Unfortunately the structural integrity/safety features of that era of automobiles aren’t great. I mean, they make for awesome looking vehicles but I don’t know if I could daily drive one of those in the freeway jungle of today. Unfortunately in some metropolitan areas California anything newer than 1975 has to be smogged every 2 years which makes it hard. I’ve tried to think which era remains relatively affordable and at the same time offers certain modern safety features and I’ve arbitrarily found it to be 2000-2010: modern airbags, structural integrity and modern driving dynamics. Not my favorite era of car design though 🤷🏻♂️
It’s crazy. I do remember how around 2013 there were economy cars for around 10k if I remember correctly. The Nissan Versa bone stock was advertised for $9999.
