Watching the bars bounce and camera shake caused me to think "Wow, he could actually use a suspension fork right about now" just as the front end washed out. Uff-da that looked painful. Great video!
This was imo your best video to date. One can get a good idea of what it's like to ride 435 miles in this case in two plus days. Everything about the video was interesting and sure glad you survived that crash and were able to peddle on to the finish. Great scenery as usual too.
Agree. I started watching this channel to educate myself on the Tour Divide. It's really cool to be informed of these other more "manageable" endurance off-road(ish) events.
Sitting in my work truck on break watching this just making me smile. Great vid, great commentary, and one of the best attitudes to life. Lovin your work fella.
Dude ur positivity is inspirational and ur hack/prep videos are super useful. Rode my fat bike for the first time today on some awesome slushy/muddy trails near Ottawa, ON. Now chilling out eating turkey burgers. Hope that crash didnt hurt too bad!
Awesome video. I'm just starting to look into these bikepacking races. They look epic. Thanks for sharingyour experience. It got me more excited to get out there !
Hey Alan, I rode the 2021 SnF 400 your recording brought back a lot of great memories and let me relive it from the couch. I am stoked to ride it again in 2022. Thanks for sharing this great content. Take care and all the best.
Alan, speaking for myself, do not question how motivating ( and entertaining) your videos are. I have a ( several ) sayings as well , one being Dream Big ! Your videos are helping in keeping a +60 year old dreaming !
I thought this was gonna be a stoner ride not 420 miles! Lol. Your tuff as nails bro. Your videos help more people than you know. This spring im going on my first bikepacking trip.
wow nice ride! I'm attempting this ride this year. I have 3 friends that say they are attemping it too. so we shall see. I've done more than a centry so I'm looking to finish in 5 days. Loved the content it s actually gives me a good idea of what to expect.
it's a fantastic ride, and you'll have a great adventure... let me know if you have any questions or want any ride beta... dirtyteethmtb at gmail dot com - ride on!
I am slowly adding to my kit based on your videos. Thanks for all the info. I am very surprised you are not wearing a mask while inside the shops. I am in Canada. Best
WOW! Man you nailed it!. Just over 2 days. I Rode the Hot Springs Tour in 2019 and the somewhat strange Covid, Wild West Route in 2020. Crossed paths with the S&F 420. Considering the S&F 420 when it warms up in 2021. Greatly appreciated video, lots of good memories. Love my Cutthroat.
Andrew - thanks for watching and commenting! You should definitely consider the SnF - the Cutty is perfect for it... and it's a tough, rewarding route... well worth the price of admission :) - If you ever make it to the Wood River Valley, hit me up for a ride - Cheers!
Alan aka dirty teeth was hoping you'd do smoke n fire again this year. i did a warm up run this past weekend to sun valley..because of you i mumbled that long drop looks inviting every time i saw one.. lol..
Super video! Congrats on your accomplishment! I've been following your bikepacking prep/gear videos and have learned a lot; this video added more info and lots of inspiration. "My Race,My Pace"... I'm going to use that. Thanks for your content and candid, positive attitude.
I’m sure glad you have dirty teeth 🦷 and not rock teeth, but it look like it hurt, this is the sign of greatness and will power, ride hard when young ride slow when your old, but remember one thing just love what you do, love all your videos great advice 👍
DT, great video. I believe I was doing the Pioneer 400 around that same time. Wasn’t nearly that cold, especially the night I was in a hotel 😉 BTW- I crashed too, but it was at night when i encountered a bull moose staring me down at 8,000’. Scared the crap out of me!
Light Racer - that's crazy! I can't even imagine a bull moose staring at me at night!!... the Pioneer 400 is on my list too... bummed it overlapped w/ SnF... hoping to do it next year, so I might have to hit you up for some beta :)
Awesome ride. After that hard get off you are definitely hardcore to keep going like you did with a great attitude. I’ll be honest after that wipe out I would have turned around and said the hell with it. Keep it up!
Nice video! Definitely a challenge accomplished! Hoping to get into some bikepacking soon, going to do it via fatbike though (Salsa Beargrease). It’ll be a trade off between efficiency and stability, comfort, and trail capability.
Excellent adventure and you showed some real grit after an early ride crash! I am just curious what you were riding? I have done sections of the gravel but not any of that single track you were enjoying!
I really like your content. If you are ever touring in Germany let me know, I would like to accompany you even for a little bit. I'd like to think I ride like you. Ride my own pace and smiles per hour. Keep up the good work and ride on!
Hi mate! I finally had a chance to look at your RUclips channel, and I immediately got hooked. Great content! This was the first video I watched. Super useful info, given that this July I hope to be able to do a shorter version of the Idaho Hot Springs route, which overlaps quite a bit with SnF. BTW, are you on Patreon? Hope to see you around soon!
Yo Marcelo! Looking forward to riding with you soon and catching up :) Lots of good south valley gravel right now!! Yes, I'm on Patreon - I use the money to give random gifts to unsuspecting people via Trail Magic Monday... you can learn more here: www.patreon.com/dirtyteethmtb
Hey dirty teeth! Love your stuff. My wife and I are riding the smoke and fire next month. we're lucky enough to have a hard tail and cut throats. What would you recommend for a ~7 day touring pace? We rode the divide a few years ago on our cut throats. Thanks.
Hi Brad, thanks for watching and commenting - always give and take on which rig to ride with... my cutthroat served me well on the route overall... especially Boise > Ketchum. I did get beat up a bit on some singletrack sections, especially the new approach to Refish Lake, the western trail @ Deadwood Reservoir, and the final miles through the Bogus Basin to the finish... but that's expected. Either way, the route is fantastic and you'll have a blast - good luck!!
Good stuff . Looks like you were prepared for this race .I wonder if there are any craks inside that carbon frame after the crash ? I hope dynamo wheel is reparable . Thanks DT .
Hi Marcin, thanks for commenting - I gave the bike a very close inspection, seems to be ok... sent in the dynamo wiring to get repaired, should be good soon :). Ride on!
There are def sections where a sus fork would’ve been nice… especially towards the end, but the cutty did fine overall - 2.2 tires and redshift stem helped 🤙
Gary, thanks for watching... if I did it again, I'd probably use the Continental Race King 2.2's again. They were a good balance -fast rolling enough on the gravel sections, and they weren't outclassed on the rowdy parts - it's subjective of course... but anything in the 2.2 width world should be fine... ride on!
Loved the video! Keep up the positivity and never stop schralping! 🚲 🤙🏽 Being from Boise as well as an avid cyclist/bike camper, this route, possibly even the event is on my list for 2021. Quick question: what aero bars do you have attached to you handlebars? I’ve been aero bar curious for some time now for those long days in the saddle. P.s. Don’t tone down your intro. Keep it rowdy!
Welyas 406 - thanks for watching, and chiming in about my intro :) haha! Definitely put SnF on your list for 2021, it's worth it. I'm currently using Syntace C3 areobars on my bike, but I'm pretty sure they discontinued them. They are great, but if I was in the market for aerobars now, there are some sweet ones that have flip up arm pads that make it easier to reach your feed bags... here's a vid discussing my setup: ruclips.net/video/smFH2jsiSoQ/видео.html - ride on!
Hi DT, another great vid, and another ride to add to the ever growing bucket list, thank you. I have a question: with hindsight what would you have changed to have stayed warm in those vault toilet buildings? I think I am right in saying that you know the area reasonably well so was the fact that you got as cold as you did just an accidental miscalculation?
Lee, great question... I was actually ok in the vault toilets... a good 10 degrees warmer inside with no wind chill... I got cold sleeping under a table at Galena Lodge (1st night) - fairly exposed... and while I was riding the 2nd night. yes, I miscalculated. I expected first night to get cold (mid 30's per the forecast in that area) but it dipped into the 20's. The 2nd night got me by surprise as we were riding to a "warmer" part of Idaho when we left Stanley... was not expecting an inversion as we dropped a couple thousand feet to Deadwood Reservoir... in hindsight, I would've carried warmer gloves (I had a warm pair with me, but I would've brought some downright winter gloves), and either shoe covers or some dog poop bags to windproof my feet...my fingers and toes going numb was the main issue... I also would've brought a sleeping pad, the insulation from the ground would've been nice... 20/20 looking back:) thanks for commenting!
Alan, what an awesome video! That crash looked brutal glad you're ok. Thanks for sharing such a great experience with us. You're videos are a welcome break from these crazy times we're in. Quick question, where does the yelling/screaming at the start of your videos come from? I love it makes me laugh everytime. Thanks man
hahaha... the yelling at the beginning is just a free sound bite I got from youtube's audio library... it makes me think a Braveheart battle cry or something, and it stuck :) - as always, thanks for the kind words Shane - ride on!
Get Lost Photo Club - syntace c3, but I think they're discontinued. some now come with flip up arm pads which I'd be looking into... here's a video about my bars and bags setup: ruclips.net/video/smFH2jsiSoQ/видео.html - Ride on!
honestly Ryan, I'm still not sure exactly what happened. I got caught enjoying the views, and lost focus for a sec... started initiating the turn late, overcompensated a hair too much... felt the wheel start to slide out, tapped the brake... I had more tire pressure than usual and hadn't been riding this bike much lately... riding lots of singletrack with my full squish... forgot how different this bike handles... especially when loaded... bottom line, I screwed up - good wakeup call, super lucky it wasn't worse!! thanks for commenting, ride on!
This is GREAT bike porn ! Something I can share with friends who may or may not bike, but gives all a great idea of what it is like to tour on a bike on dirt roads. But I never did figure out that crash. I knew you were going down with the first, massive twist of the front wheel. But WHAT HAPPENED?
Dog's Boy, thanks for watching and commenting - I just lost concentration... still not sure exactly what happened... there were great river views off to the side, the endorphins were pumping... the terrain got kind of sandy in the turn and I washed out a bit, over-compensated, and high-sided... oops!
Hi, fairly new subscriber here, I do enjoy your content, could I make a request please? Could you adjust the volume or change the yelling/cheering at the very start, always catches me off guard and is deafening if use earphones. Cheers!
Hi James, fair request :) many people say that's their favorite part of my videos! I'll try and see if I can adjust the volume - thanks for taking the time to comment - ride on!

Nice one Dude, stay safe and drink beer you've earned it ;-)
Thanks James, about to have a beer right now... cheers to you!
If doing this course again, would you opt for a suspension fork or stick with the rigid setup?
I would probably go squish for some more comfort... sorry for the late response - ride on!!
Just got a hardtail (TimberJack). Planning to to it this year 2022. What tires and width would you choose to run?

hahaha! Ray, you definitely have a valid point!! Thanks for watching and commenting - much appreciated :)
I don't even bikepack and/or do distance rides but it's definitely something I'd be interested in. Your content is great so far, keep it up!
