Nascar 99 review on the nintendo 64. Recorded using a dazzle and on original real console hardware and game cartridge.
DAYTONNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAA! LET'S play that instead
Expecting Brainchild a much better idea indeed!
I still play this game every once in a while just to remember old NASCAR.
My dad rented this because he loves pro racing. It took my sister and I about fifteen minutes to figure out that the only enjoyable part of this game was to turn 180° at the start of the race and drive straight into the pack, over and over. "WHOA, THERE GOES A TIRE! WHOA, THERE GOES A TIRE! WHOA, THER- WHOA, T- WHOA, THERE GOES A TIRE!"
That's friggin hilarious!😆 It's like $5 now. I might just buy it to try it😜😁
I liked this game for a bit for some reason. Probably Surfing With the Alien.
Joe Satriani ;)
Scuttle buttin was pretty cool too
I used to love causing huge wrecks in this game and then go back and replay from different angles. it was awesome.
The driver view during a night race was one of my favorite ways to play back in the day.
Lieutenant Yoshi that is very cool
"Teeters on trying to please them but also appeal to the mass market at the same time"
And there you have it, someone outside of the country who claims to know nothing of NASCAR nails down the problems the organization started to face around this time period.
There was a major shift around this time from the core Southern US market in an attempt to appeal to a nationwide audience. In fact, 1999 was the last time that NASCAR saw a champion from the region in Dale Jarrett.
From improved safety features and the deaths of legends to expansion of the league away from traditional tracks with character to cookie cutter superspeedways or cookie cutter cars, NASCAR took a turn for the worst at this time. Overall, this game is a microcosm of all of the problems NASCAR was facing and was about to face in that time. This NASCAR game was about as fun as NASCAR was about to become.
For being a NASCAR fan and owning several games during this time. Even though the game had 99 on it, it was a port of NASCAR 98 just with a updated field.
Dat joe satriani (surfing with the alien) playing in the background
***** Non the less another great review!
Best racing sim from that era: Grand Prix Legends on PC. Came out in '98 and people STILL make mods and updates for it today. There's a healthy multiplayer community as well. Blows my mind. The physics were amazing for the time, and you can use modern force feedback wheels with it. There's just something about driving in that '67 F1 season, especially on the original Nürburgring layout. Fantastic. It's super hard, but exceptionally satisfying to master.
KyoshoBallard ill have to check that out although i did like some racing sim i played on oculus a while back i forget its name though
KyoshoBallard Yeah GPL was brilliant. I still have it installed and play it with my G27 on occasion. The physics in the game were light years ahead at the time and still make it fun (and challenging) to this day IMO.
Why didn't you play on Seaside Street Galaxy or Dinosaur Canyon? :D
***** because i still have all my own teeth and so NASCARs appeal wore off too soon ;)
Lmao we got jokes about your teeth too. Look at Austin powers. Not gonna lie this game looks like shit!
Jason Mahar this game is shit. I have this game.
Awesome video glenn!! I actually just picked up this game complete! Awesome video and keep up the good work!
"woooooooooooooooooo! we gon' go fast and turn left" - 'Murrica 1999
Hands down Grand Tarismo, I know I misspelled that. Shut up.
As for the game at hand, I grew up in Indiana so Nascar is in my blood. The main appeal of it is more for the racers and mechanics than the spectators. It's about who can get a stock car to go the fastest rather who can maneuver their car the best. This is why they race on your basic circles.
All that being said, I didn't play this game but I did play the follow up Nascar 2000 and.....it was okay.
I'm not a nascar fan at all but i really liked this game back in the day. Its one of the most realistic racing games on the system i think.
And the soundtrack/music on the game is amazing
For some reason I had this game. The only track I ever played was Bristol at night. I remember there being a track called Watkins Glen that was impossible.
The game was more arcade like = high sensitivity turning which makes it harder, I like the early 2000's nascar games the most
my home track just remember to turn right sometime and put the breaks on for the bustop
This and Turok were actually the first games we got with our console. Turok scared the fucking shit out of me so I only played this game. I loved it. The song was sick, and the gameplay was actually great imo.
A friend and I were buying us new games as kids in the local store. I wanted to buy "Nascar 99" but my friend wanted to buy it too, so I decided to buy "Beetle Adventure Racing" and borrow Nascar after my friend played it. Sadly "Beetle" wasn`t the right game for me and "Nascar" was much for fun for me. I was very unhappy with my decision. I bought "Nascar 99" later and played it for many hours.
Oh wow beetle adventure racing is a much better game in my opinion - at least you enjoyed this when you got it though
I used to play this a lot,I couldn't keep straight on the track so I would just try and cause crashes by going the wrong way!!
As someone who loves to play sniper, and accuracy matters I loved this game. My favorite feature by far was that after it locked on target you could immediately easily re aim and go fore head shots. I almost exclusively used the hand gun as I went through the game head shotting everyone.
Wrong game video dude. 🤣
my favorite racing simulator on '98 was Colin McRae Rally
Love your intro music it's the best on RUclips for me and l subscribe to many gamer channels.Keep up the sublime work that you do Glenn from a fellow N64 fan.
I used to watch my share of NASCAR and indeed owned this game when I was younger and managed to put dozens of hours into it. The controls got rather touchy at times making the two road courses in particular excessively difficult (particularly Sears Point). The AI served to move the computer cars around the track in the proper direction and little else but as I was limited in choices for oval racers I made do. And the comments in the review about the appalling amount of pop-up were spot on. Needless to say, this arcade-y racer has aged quite poorly so simple nostalgia is about the only appeal it holds for me. Back then I think any NASCAR fans looking for a hint of realism were busy playing Papyrus' NASCAR Racing series on PC.
And to answer your question, yes, Gran Turismo was about the best you were going to do as far as racing sims back then. Too bad I was a staunch N64 person :D
My favorite thing to do in these simulator NASCAR games....driving against the flow of traffic and ramming into everyone. lol
That's no fun, racing other cars is fun,
Grizzlygaming88
Destruction is fun. Destruction is love. Destruction is life.
Grew up playing this game. It’s the only nascar game I’ve played that you had to brake in the corners of Talladega. 😂
Gotta love them talladega nights!
Ok this isn't the best NASCAR game, Nascar thunder 2003 is. But this is still a good game, you have to understand the sport to understand the game. The game is waaaayyyy more arcade than sim but that's the 90's for you. A few short years after they REALLY made some sim nascar games. All in all I don't agree with you. NASCAR is real racing and I would die for it.
As an American I can honestly say that I never understood the allure of NASCAR. Then again my first racing game was XG-3 on GameCube and it sorta set the bar for me. When I finally learned about formula racing I was much more interested in that. Because honestly, why go around a simple oval track turning in one direction when you can go through twists and turns to really test your skill
lol you don't decelerate enough before you take your turns so it's not "occasional tap on the break" you have to break almost each turn
TheInuitGamer ill remember that for 2000 :)
but I agree with you on everything you said, I played the hell of this game cauz I received it as a gift so I know everything about it and it's true it's not that good of a game announcers are really annoying this is not a simulation or not an arcade game this game don't even know what it is. I always wondered how when you lose a tire it magicly reappears without getting to the pit lol keep the good wotk I love your vids this is a really cool project to review all N64 Games I loved this era in gaming
Even at dega lol.
Was not expecting to hear some Joe Satriani during a N64 review!
Whoa there goes a tire simulator!
ill have to get 2000 uploaded soon
@@n64glennplant This was one of my first two games. I used to leave it on just for the music sometimes.
I have Nascar 2000 for the N-64. I'm thinking on the Taladaga track I should be able to hold it wide open through all the turns, not the case, I have to slow for the turns or I hit the wall.
Surfing with the alien, I had that album on vinyl bro!
loved this game as a kid. it hasn't aged well tho
only thing i remember from this game when i was younger, was me drive the wrong way and trying to crash cars lol
Great video, man. I use to own this and I remember the cars being really difficult to control. The most fun I had with it was just driving the wrong direction on the track and hitting all the other cars head on lol.
vistahater44 i did that off camera too ;)
It's perhaps Cliché but Gran Turismo is by far the best racing game of the era
Absolutely not! Didn’t Kong Racing was the best of the era.
Back on the n64 I had this game and it only lasted a day but back in the day I only had a n64 so my favs were nascar 2000 (mainly because I am a nascar fan) and the f1 game
Ridge Racer 64 was such an amazing port.
RobertJosephGushue yeah i reviewed that a while ago - great game
I love the N64 version cause it was awesome and I had tons of fun since I played newer NASCAR games before it
This was one of the first games I played for PS1
I'm more an arcade racing fan so I've only played a few sims, being some GT(3-4), Forza(1-2), and Test Drive Le Mans.
I never played any Nascar games, closest thing is probably Daytona USA which to me seems more fun.
Pimpalicious1987 yeah daytona gets a lot of support which id agree with
“Woah! There goes your tire!”
nascar 98 on playstation was the best
I played alot of Gran Turismo growing up, so i'll definitely say I prefer that
ShadowThePika yeah the second one was sublime, the endurance races were brutal!
You should try the first next gen game, NASCAR 2001
As much as I love racing games I find it really hard to enjoy nascar in the same way that many USA people don’t get our love for f1 in Britain
Love this game
I've never been much of a simulation racing game fan, but I enjoy the Forza series for what it's worth. As for arcade racers, Stunt Racer 64 is a blast
Tyler Krszjzaniek i love forza too, great series - you know i have stunt racer recorded i just have a few more videos in my schedule to cover first
keep at it, Glenn! You've been uploading a ton of great videos lately
Tyler Krszjzaniek rush week is next week :)
I really enjoyed Sega Rally on the Saturn when it came out. Granted, it doesn't have many cars or tracks but the solid controls and arcade style gameplay really got me hooked. I'd play Sega Rally over Gran Turismo any day. Too bad Sega has essentially turned into a mobile developer these days.
ashfury yeah it sucks they could easily now try a new console, theres that many people who'd pick it up for nostalgia it may help get them going again
You should review rocket robot on wheels (or should I say wheel) that was my favorite platformer next to dk64
Boom Dude ill do it soon enough :)
Want a good nascar like game?play daytona saturn/dreamcast.
Ciprian Mogosanu ill second that
But does it have Joe Satriani?
Nascar 09 to 360 was great.
Daytona on the Saturn was dogshit. Champion Circuit Edition was far better.
Service Merchandise lol wow I feel old.
Gran Turismo 2 is no doubt the best simulation racer of this era (and some would argue of all time).
CoolAsDan i spend MANY hours on that beast of a game :)
This almost looks like the game that should have been Destruction Derby 64 but it wasn't .. I only say that because of the realism of the damage you take while racing!
***** its more like the ps1 DD than the n64 one was :)
I miss playing Top Gear for SNES.
To me, the best racing game is Need For Speed Underground 2. Amazing still to this day. Well... I'm a huge racing fan for any type as long as it's racing. But I never really focused on NASCAR. I was more focused on Street Racing and Drifting. Tell me, tho. You think I'll be satisfied or at least OK with this game?
It's got to be GT, unless of course Wave Race 64 is considered a sim!
My childhood
Wow really? Are you a nascar fan then I take it
@@n64glennplant I am not really a nascar fan, but this was one of the few games I owned as a child. Great memories.
My thumbs hurt just seeing the thumbnail…that N64 joystick was horrible and painful
This game is good for the first 10 minutes.
two things one the n64 game was made more arcadey two I had this as a kid and loved it
nascar raceing 3 on pc is some good shit
It's actually decent
NASCAR games are always going to be niche
Loved the ps1 version, and enjoy the videos! & for the question, Gran Turismo 2 no doubt
CSProductions918 i loved that too
Does it count if I don't really like Sim racers? I'd take an arcade racer any day over a sim...
...but I guess Gran Turismo really is the king of sim racing.
timmer919hep i liked the first few but after that GT seems to be a little dull - almost too realistic
That's a new one...too realistic
Too realistic? -.- WTF! Arcade racing games are trash, simulator racing games are where it's at. Now people get confused on what games are racing sims. Like grand turismo and forza Motorsport (not horizon) and NASCAR 2002-2006 are all racing sims, games like need for speed, grid, any NASCAR games from 2010-2015, project cars and the crew
Grizzlygaming88 ...exactly what i said...Gran turismo is a sim?
the only good Nascar game I played is Nascar racing 2 on PC. That game was far ahead of any nascar game from EA.
I snorted at the Satriani.
Need for speed Porsche unleashed ps1.
Hate to break it to ya, that's not a sim.
I was big into Gran Turismo back then. I rented this and remember not liking it. It was boring. I would usually just drive in the opposite direction and crash my car. lol
+Sean Ryan GT is the schiznit - can't wait for Sport to be released
I cant wait for Sports to be released either. I preordered that game two years ago for the VR mode
its grating my nerves that they dont have a release date for it. :P
Aren't NASCAR cars blocky anyway? Lol
World Driver Championship is good. But I think my fave sim racer of the era would be GT2
***** WDC is okay...i dont rate it as highly as many do though
Nascar is just one of those notoriously bad N64 ports. Quite a surprise from EA since their (excluding FIFA 64) FIFA, Madden, NHL, Supercross games all featured higher polygon counts, better textures, more advanced lighting and higher resolution (640x480) whilst playing better than their PlayStation (320x240) counterparts.
liveswired everything with excluding fifa 64 in the sentence is 100% correct :)
never got the whole nascar thing, other than Daytona hahaha
TootyUk had that on the saturn - great game :)
Beetle Adventure Racing
Mohamed Wardi pure classic!
After you are done with n64 you should review playstation games!
Jeffrey LaButte it may surprise you to know that i had a ps1 at the same time with around 400 games
***** Review'em next!
Grand 3
never like sim racers and this looks as dull as they get
Ollie Martin i never got the appeal of nascar but i guess people will say the same about f1
F1 confuses me beyond comprehension. Nascar however, is simple, exciting and very intense. When I'm fav driver is in the lead I go nuts I love NASCAR even tho everyone hates it
F-1 is the king of racing. The best of the best. Kills Indy racing! Indy are cheaply made f-1 cars. Nikki Lauda was a true hero!!!!!!!! I need a good f-1 game for the 360. I unlocked all the sweet ass f-1 cars in GT 3. Glenn I'm with ya. I don't mind NASCAR games but the complexity of f-1 beats all into the ground and keeps em at 6 feet under. Nikki and his Ferrari! Omg!
Your not very good at this lol
WonderboyF1 ill second that! racing games are normally my thing - couldn't see a reason to invest too much time in this one though as its really not my cup of tea
Fav sim of the era has gotta be granturismo 2! All day! Didn't have a pc so I couldn't play that real complex shit.
Any one got a fastest time on nur? For any game.
did you know that nascar drivers aren't actually driving in a circle constantly turning left? they're actually driving in a straight line, the track turns their cars for them using steep slopes. so its even more boring than you might have initially thought.
Haha I don’t think it’s possible for it to be more boring!?!?!?!
