    What a lot of people probably don't know about this championship battle which is interesting is if Dale Jarrett led a lap in the final race than thabeast would have lost the title by 1 point. Back in these days in NASCAR you got 5 points for leading a lap and another 5 points if you led the most laps. Since he didn't lead a lap he didn't get the bonus points.
    this was the point system used in 1998 (the year of the game's release)
    1st - 175 points
    2nd- 170 points
    3rd - 165 points
    4th - 160 points
    5th - 155 points
    6th - 150 points
    7th to 11th drop in increments of 4 points per postion with 7th being 146 points and 11th being 130 points
    12th to 43rd drop in increments of 3 points per postion with 12th being 127 points and 43rd being 34 points

    My mom wanted me to play this when I was kid since she was a diehard NASCAR fan. She was upset that it lacked the necessity of pitstops, and back then I begged to differ, but know I see it differently. Pitstops add to player control and calculation. Not having them is like doing a precision level in Mario but with unlimited mushrooms.

    • @T3n50r
      @T3n50r 2 года назад +4

      Ye, this game went for what the Gran Turismo series has always done. Realism etc. That the car could break down and lose a tire etc. is what set it apart from other driving games. Automatic handling and lack of pitstops takes away from that aspect of it tho. This is the type of racing game that shines with the details as "player control and calculation" as you put it. Definitely not the game for ThaBeast but definitely a game that was enjoyed by a lot of people when it was released because it wasn't unrealistic.

    I don't think you really comprehend the extreme technical limitations of the N64. This game also released on the PS1. That version had better graphics, full, licensed music tracks, higher quality sound effects, and pre-recorded FMV sequences. The PS1's maximum size for a game was 660 MB. For the N64, it's only 64 MB, less than 10%. The fact that they were able to get all the cars and tracks into the game without any sacrifices is a real feat. Once that was done, there wasn't a lot of room left. Graphics and sounds are expensive data-wise, so they had to compress everything down, loop what little music they could fit, and sacrifice the FMVs in favor of text walls. It's easy to look back on this game, nearly a quarter of a century later, and wonder why every driver looks like a cursed mannequin. But, we could play as ANY driver on ANY track, in 3D. We could wreck up our cars and have them drive like crap. We could race a full season at 100% length if we wanted to. Those were the real NASCAR commentators delivering those voice lines. That was groundbreaking stuff in 1998.

    As someone who was raised on NASCAR (Rusty Wallace fan, #2 Car), this game was in rotation a lot as a kid. The funny thing is, you say you prefer more unrealistic racing games...but this was actually very unrealistic for a NASCAR game, it was more Arcadey, and they became more sim based with each installment. I eventually stopped watching NASCAR a few years back and stopped caring about the games around NASCAR Thunder 2006 or so...but these were a lot of fun back during this time.

    The differences in nascar tracks are pretty big in some cases, and pretty cool too. Different tracks have different banking angles around the corners, some are paved with different materials, some of them were made with a tractor and willpower, and some were measured out meticulously and laid out the same. Drivers will talk about certain bumps on certain parts of the tracks they need to avoid as well, but that's more of a real life difference between the tracks, rather than something that could be put in gameplay.
    Just tryna say nascar is cool as hell, and it always upsets me a little when people just say it's turning left

    • @aridwyer187
      @aridwyer187 3 года назад +5

      Yeah, it is just an oval, but those drivers have to optimize every single detail of that oval, manage changing lines based on how the track changes and tires wear, and do it all consistently for hundreds of laps in wheel-to-wheel traffic on the limit. Insane how underappreciated oval racing in general is, though to be fair most of the detail that makes it cool isn't super evident if you're just watching a bunch of dudes drive in a circle with no context.

    I think the perfect analogy to NASCAR games if you’re not a fan of the sport, is it’s kinda like Pokémon... if you want to just “drive left” - and have fun bumping and racing a few laps on different tracks, ya, you can do that...
    Just like you can follow the story of a Pokémon game, catch the Pokémon you think are cool, and just level ‘em up...
    But if you really want to nerd out, and get deep into it and figure out the absolute best ratio’s to find shiny Pokémon, or find the best way to max out EV’s and IV’s you want, etc etc...
    Just like the point of the “driving left” simulator for some like me who actually like these games, The point is to do better and better, go faster and faster, etc.
    But ya...the graphics and stuff on this are just straight awful compared to some of the nascar games starting around 03’ which is when I came across them and then started following the sport a bit because of them...those games actually felt very realistic compared to this.
    They had a 20 year career mode where you started from the bottom with the crappiest crew and the crappiest engines and the crappiest engine and chassis builders and lowest paying sponsors (with lowest expectations atleast) on and on and on...
    Man I had so much fun growing up playing Thunder 2004...

    This has a problem which shows up in many "true" racing games (vs kart games) where the line you are trying to hit is pretty important for achieving a good time. Very few games teach this well though, so unless you actually have learned it outside the game, it takes away a lot of the potential play from the game.
    For turns, you are trying to use as much of the track (side to side) as possible. Right before you start your turn, you break. This allows you to accelerate through and out of the turn, reaching the top speed faster. The different courses all have slightly different turns/shapes, so the optimum break, turn, and acceleration is all a little different. Thab often tried to take a turn too early or too fast, putting him on the outside of the curve when he wants to be on the inside.

    It's weird that the N64 has so many racing games and, like, 3 JRPGs. The N64 was great, but genre diversity was not it's strong suit.

    I've only played one nascar game that I enjoyed. It was a PC game and the car damage and crashes were amazing. That's the only reason I liked it haha

      I remember having a nascar pc game with a stearing wheel.
      Back in the days as a kid, having a stearing wheel game controller was just amazing in its own right.

    Dick Trickle committed suicide in 2013 after a prolonged struggle with chronic pain, and after his granddaughter died in a car accident. RIP
