    This was based on an old NES series that made its way through the SNES, Gameboy, up to the N64. There was also a PS1 version of this. This game was obviously inspired by Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive and Tekken. Very fast paced though

    I LOVED this game. Had it as a kid, so I came in with no pretense, but I thoroughly enjoyed SD mode. Having so much stuff to unlock, a storyline and connections between characters that you simply had to play through different perspectives to really get and the transforming bosses and unlockables kept me entertained for a LONG time. Lol
    There was just a LOT going on. As I got a little older, I started playing the Virtual mode (maybe supposed to be virtua fighter influenced?)
    Anyways. I'm a long time fighting game fan, and even played competitively in a few games for a while and I still look back fondly on this game.

    one reason i like about this channel is that he will show us games and gameplay of games that we never knew existed. when we see them a lot of us are thinking this man is now just wasting time trying to find good games but when some of us look at the game we ask why did these games not sell well. because of this channel i now have amazon busy as hell (no joke). another thing i like about this channel is that he shows off games not only that were good but games were companies took risk. even though those games didn't fly off the shelves they were really good games and maybe games that other companies should have advertised better because a lot i feel most of these games that never did too well had the potential of making the n64 sell twice the amount of units

  • @Razorblade1812
    @Razorblade1812 9 лет назад

    Jeez. The characters in this game look like characters that have been used in other games and even animes for that matter. For instance: Powers looks like he was taken from Virtua Fighter as a character named Wolf, and Ryuhi looks like a cross between Kazuya Mishima (Tekken) and Jann-Lee (Dead or Alive).
    As for the game itself, this surely had potential to become one of the best fighting games on the N64 next to Fighter's Destiny.

  • @Yuuretsu

    I think I picked this game up on a whim after searching for N64 fighting games after playing MK4 and KI Gold. The game didn't keep me interested for long because I'm generally not a collector in anything besides 3D platformers of the time. I would still mark this a hidden gem due to the surprising amount of content the game has and because Natsume made a really good effort bringing a fighting game to the N64 that is generally fun to play.

    This is my Favorite fighting game of the time, and even today. I played the SNES and NES ones, and am really bummed I never got to play the Japanese-only version of this game with more characters. I rented it when I had the chicken pox and literally played it for two weeks straight. Got it for my Birthday a few months later. Still played it up until last year when I had to sell my games. I always ticked the store owner off. Just A really good game all around. Suzaku ftw.

      Yeah, I never knew anyone else who had even heard of it, or tried it around my town. I'm glad you have made all these videos in the way in which you did, as they are basically Historical Archives. I didn't see Robot Ponkottsu 64 on the list, which makes sense. It does have the capabilities of using the transfer pak that came with Pokémon Stadium to transfer data from the Gameboy Robot Ponkottsu games...(Robopon). Idk if there would be enough filler to make A full video or not though. you pretty much have everything covered though.

    Ah ha! I was waiting for you to review this and I really thought your thoughts were good ones as per usual. As for me, I can remember being like 11 or 12 and spending hours playing the circuit mode. This one is extremely nostalgic for me, but it was sad that hardly anyone else I knew played it. It was fun however, to invite friends over and have them play a VS match against me only to show them how powerful my character was. I always hoped that a game like that would come out again. Can you imagine how cool it would be if a customizable 2-D fighter came out like this with online play? I've always wanted something like that. Where you spend a fair amount of time in the one player game building up your character and customizing them and then pitting them against others online to see if your combination of items and player skill matches up with the competition. I think there are a lot of online fighters now, but none of them to me had quite the leveling up and customization aspect that this game's SD mode had. Is it a perfect game? No, not by a long shot but as you said simply for this innovation alone I think it should be counted as note worthy for what it was trying to do :).

    Whenever I try to perform the secret treasure busters with the treasures at max lvl, nothing happens but the regular animation. anybody help me figure it out in this old game? I held down the button the item was on for a second or two and it just did the regular animation.

    This is something I never understood: Why are pretty much all fighting games on N64 sluggish? It's better at 3D than the PS1, yet you have high framerate and good quality models on the PS1. If I remember correctly, all the Tekken series is 60 FPS on PS1... and this looks like 20-25 FPS. :/ The controls on the N64 also often felt soggy.

    • @n64glennplant
      @n64glennplant  9 лет назад +3

      Yeah it's very weird...and you're right I know at least one of the tekken games was 60fps

    • @odinsplaygrounds
      @odinsplaygrounds 9 лет назад +2

      When reading up some, there are tons of PS1 games running at 60 FPS, many of them being fighting games, and even many of them surpassing the standard resolution of PS1. Having a smaller arena to render and only 1 characters obviously makes something like that easier to pull off - but all the more reason to wonder why the N64 could pull off way bigger 3D levels than the PS1, more advanced graphics in 3D - yet a limited 3D arena with 2 characters and it was always quite laggy. :/

      Odin's Playground The hardware architecture was more efficient in the PS1, and with it being a 32bit system it required less resources to run the games, where as the N64 was a true 64bit CPU, which required more resources to run the games overall, and had a less efficient hardware architecture. It was not till AMD came out with the first true 64bit X86 CPU the Athalon XP that 64 bit architectures where done right.

      Odin's Playground I second that it's weird that N64 3D fighters all look worse than PS1 and Sega Saturn 3D fighters.
      I had a Sega Saturn at the time and was used to the superb controls of Virtua Fighter 2 to me that was like near Arcade perfection to see in motion at 60fps but when I compared the supposedly more powerful console the N64 the fighting games always looked worse.
      However with that said 3D worlds was where the N64 excelled PS1 and Sega Saturn 3D levels often felt cramped or if they were large the draw distance was kind of small and sectioned into different areas.
      It would be nice to see a 3D fighter on the N64 with good character models and 3D backgrounds only seen Soul Blade do that on the PS1 at that time but it was 30fps

      Odin's Playground N64 had Anti -Aliasing (that reduces jaggies) but tends to slow down graphics. Besides, N64 had no Namco, Sega, Capcom or Team Ninja. However as for fighters, these N64 fighting games are 60 FPS:
      *Dark Rift (solid 60fps framerate & animation on NTSC). *Killer Insting Gold (Frame is 60fps, but character animation is not). *Rakuga Kids (solid 60fps both framerate & animation). *Super Smash Bros (solid 60fps on NTSC). *Mortal Kombat 4 (quite solid 60fps on NTSC).

    I still to this day play this game on a regular basis.
    Mostly just trying to come up with insane combos nowadays, but I did spend a lot of time in versus as well.
    I only really play the Viritualhiryu mode in 2D but I find lots of enjoyment finding glitches that let you do insane block pressure and I've found insta-kill combos with most characters.
    I have one combo showcase that's really dated, but I'm working on a new one. And I have all my combos written down if someone's interested :]

    Favourate fighter on the 64. I liked it because it feels like a cross between Street Fighter EX and Dead or Alive, and was pretty balanced overall. I think SD Shouryu has an infinite, though... It's been so long, I'd love to pick up a copy sometime!
