    WATCH THE COMPARISON: VIBERG VS ALDEN • FIGHT! Viberg Vs. Alde...
    A lot of people consider the Viberg Service boot to be literally the best boot in the entire world. In many circles, the word "Viberg" is practically shorthand for top tier boots: if you have Vibergs, you know boots.
    They're unlike any other boots I've worn, but are they worth that much? Read the full review: stridewise.com/viberg-service... ‎
    OVERVIEW
    A very classic, traditional look help support the idea of this boot as an icon of masculine style.
    There’s no fancy stitching or unusual toecaps - not in the Brown Chromexcel anyway - but a few things stand out: the stitchdown welt, the leather selection, the wide last, and the fact that these are very heavy boots.
    LEATHER
    This is Chromexcel® leather from Horween Leather Company, a beloved American tannery founded in Chicago over a hundred years ago. Chromexcel is their flagship product and it’s made with 89 processes over 28 working days, resulting in a leather infused with a huge variety of oils and waxes and fats, including beef tallow and beeswax.
    Chromexcel has great depth of color, but the top finish scratches pretty easily.
    LEATHER CARE
    Venetian shoe cream every few months should be enough to keep this leather conditioned and happy. If you want a shinier leather, try Saphir’s Renovateur. Don’t stress too much about care - this is pretty durable leather.
    ** Compare with the Alden Indy: • Alden Indy Boot Review...
    SOLE
    There’s a lot going on here: a slip resistant Dainite outsole, then a leather insole, then a thin cork midsole, a steel shank, a leather insole, and a leather heel seat with foam in it. I’ve never seen such a complicated sole and this is really where the boot shines.
    The stitchdown welt means the upper is sewn directly into the sole. It’s just as water resistant as a Goodyear welt, but it’s a lot harder to resole. It’s not impossible, but there’s a good chance the leather will stretch during the process.
    FIT & SIZING
    Order a half size down from your normal sneaker size. I’m an 11.75 on a Brannock device and I’m a size 11 in Thursday, Red Wing, Wolverine, Chippewa, and Viberg as well.
    These shoes are available in size 6 to 13 and it’s made on the 2030 last, for which ONLY ONE WIDTH is available - and it’s an E with. Many consider this the best boot in the world, and it’s not even available in the “normal” (D) width. The 2030 last is roomy and it’s perfectly okay for a D width, but I want a perfect fit if I’m paying this much.

    PRICE
    With shipping, it’s $695 for a pair. You won’t find them cheaper if you look for them outside the regular Viberg store.
    PROS
    Great, traditional look
    Heavyweight sole makes you feel indestructible
    Great leather selection
    Dainite sole is great for inclement weather
    CONS
    Hard to resole
    Not sleek or formal
    Only available in E width
    Insanely expensive

    I wore Vibergs in the woods for 45 years they were a very strong boot for work, three pairs. i don't know how many times I had them resoled . The new fashion line, so to speak are maybe a little pricey but all the employees make really good wage, enough to own a home (and that is saying something around Victoria B.C. Canada) and with one bread winner it is possible.

    I recently bought the Viberg Country Boot. It's based on a traditional British hunting boot, slightly taller than the service boot. I initially ordered the Thursday Captain in Natural but I just felt it was too light, not substantial enough for the look/feel I wanted, so gave them to my son-in-law who loved them, and I went for the Viberg. I live in Vancouver, was heading to Victoria for a couple days vacation so made an appointment with their office and had them lay out 4 different models for me to check. I chose the Country Boot over a couple horse-butt pairs, and their service boot in natural CXL. Impressions after 2 months - I love this boot. It took a good 30 days of every day use to break in, including a blister on my first day but now they are moulded to my feet and are incredibly comfortable. The Country is just enough different that is doesn't look like every other service boot out there. The colour is a rich brown with a hint of red, the leather is thick, the boots are heavy as Nick states in his review, and yes they do seem to throw your legs out while striding. I like that, but it was a little odd at first, like I was being propelled along. Ridgeway sole, 1035 last, stitch down construction. I don't profess to understand what all that means but it looks good, feels good, and I won't have to worry about resoling them for a long, long time. Yeah they are super expensive and there are probably better "value" boots out there. But I am Canadian, these are Canadian, they are made a 90 min ferry ride and short drive away, I worked the price into my vacation, got yelled at by my wife for spending $900 Cdn for a "$%#@*!! pair of boots!!!" and I am happy.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  4 года назад +1

      That is a great looking boot! I love how thoughtful your approach to buying it was, you visited them at their office and really thought it through. That slightly red leather is gorgeous as well, I'm jealous. The boots do feel like they're walking YOU, right?? But I can see the appeal :) Glad you're happy with your purchase. (and I hope the wife forgives you eventually!)

    • @andybone117
      @andybone117 4 года назад +2

      @@Stridewise Yup, just got home from them taking me for a walk, and that's exactly how it feels once you get moving. I forgot to mention, these have the pulls on them too which really helps in pulling the boots on. I'd kinda prefer toe caps, but I suppose that wasn't part of the British hunting boot design. By the way....really like your website and reviews!

    great review man!! so weird, I threw on my brown cxl viberg service boots for the first time in a month, and see this review pop up in my feed first thing this morning LOL! I totally agree about the break in period. I have friends who say they didn't suffer at first, but for me, I was in pain the first 5 times I wore them. I think the main reason is because of the roughout leather on the inside of the Vibergs, they tore up my heel, whereas Alden and other bootmakers have the smooth unlined leather on the interior. i also agree about the weight, they are HEAVY! (but i enjoy that about them) Have you tried out Truman boots? Very similar to Viberg but a smaller operation out in Colorado, i did a comparison video on the 2 brands. Keep up the great work man, your videos are awesome!!!

    Hi there! In terms of sizing, Viberg goes with the UK size. Based on what you described of going half size down to an 11, it seems that you went for a UK 11 / US 12 for your 11.5 brannock sized foot. So you went half size bigger for these I assume..

    Wonderful review and beautiful pair of boots! I would like to note quickly however that chromexcel is a deliberately soft yet resilient leather. It scuffs and scratches easily on the surface but these wear marks should buff away very easily, leaving it looking almost like new due to the high wax and oil content infused into the leather. This is what makes chromexcel so unique and so beloved by boot makers-it’s takes a beating handsomely and cleans up very well. So, the scuffs and scrapes on the boot that you mention around 4:30 should disappear within 10 minutes of brushing if desired! :)

    I don't know ... after about five years of heavy use my two pairs of "entry level" Chippewas are well broken in but otherwise look like new. So do my Red Wings and Wolverines. The Vibergs are nice looking boots but if you care propperly for your shoes I cannot see what makes boots like theese so much better than their competitors. The only thing that really wears down over time and needs to be replaced are laces and the soles and they all are jusing the same ones anyway (mostly Dainite and Vibram). For me it's just a matter of looks. I have not found any fault in any of my boots that would make them inferior to others. Maybe I was just lucky with thge pairs I got.

I recently needed to pick up a pair of Moc Toe and they only had E’s so 12, I was swimming, no 11.5 and had to go to 11’s but even dropping to 11, just way too wide.

    Would you recommend Vibergs to someone with a wider foot? I went to a Red Wing store recently that has a machine used to size feet very accurately. Found out I'm an EE width in Red Wings. I got a pair of Iron Rangers but would like something a bit dressier and I'm finding that not a lot of dress boots have wide widths.

    In regards the your complaint about the width of the boot. These are faithful recreations of Viberg's original "service" boot. Meaning they were meant to protect soldiers feet in combat. They (soldiers) would have worn thick woolen socks, so the E width was a standard to accommodate this. // Do you use shoe trees? I noticed some curling on your toe box.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 лет назад

      There was a bit of toe spring when I got them, actually, but I just got a shipment of shoe trees today and jammed 'em into the Vibergs. I don't know about the E width, I've worn thick socks and they still weren't the best fitting boots ever. Which is a high water mark but when so many people call these the best boots on Earth, I expect a nice fit.

    • @98LuckyLuk

      Stridewise
      What are you expecting? Fit has not much to do with quality. Feet are very different. Some lasts will fit good and others won't, that has nothing to do with the quality of the shoe and is most of the time not correctable with socks.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 лет назад +3

      I'm not saying it's a poor quality boot at all, the boot itself is very well constructed. I'm saying the company has done a bad job of providing optimal fits for their customers.
      There are a lot of fantastic boots out there that don't have a C width, if I had a C foot it would be a legitimate complaint that I couldn't wear them and I hadn't been catered to, although C widths are a small part of the population.
      D widths are the vast majority of the population, so Viberg should have options for them. I know they expect D people to just wear thick socks for their 2030 last but even then it's not a shoe that's made to fit my foot, it doesn't feel quite right. Most people are D, they don't sell a D. That's a downside, especially for people who aren't boot fanatics and just want a nice fitting, well constructed boot. Viberg has the second part down but not the first, and for something that costs $700 that's going to be frustrating.

      thePowerPlant I noticed the same thing about the toe. For some strange reason he really doesn’t take care of his stuff. No shoe trees. No rotation. Just wholesale negligence and abuse. And yet he thinks that a single loose thread is a defect. It’s a very baffling and annoying dichotomy. Not sure why he expects absolute perfection from these products and then turns around to treat them with such disregard. The whole thing reeks of poor stewardship if not outright entitlement.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 лет назад

      Relax, I use shoe trees and I don't think a loose thread makes a boot a bad boot. I'll point it out, but the Higgins Mill is one of my all time favorite boots and it had tons of loose threads. I just note the things worth noting. It's kind of like arch support, very few boots have good arch support but I'll still point it out because there are some that do have great arch support. There are some boots that have *no* loose threads because they have awesome quality control. I'll point that out.

    Hey Nick. Really enjoying the videos....Easily the best boot reviews I've seen on RUclips!
    So, my Viberg experience: I recently purchased the exact same service boots you review here. Exchanged the first pair due to some erratic stitching on one boot's "welt". This was not a structural problem, but I just couldn't abide the cosmetic flaw in a $695 boot. Got my exchange pair and all the stitching was immaculate. Definitely some wheeling present (As on the first pair), but that really doesn't bother me at all personally. Right boot exhibited some minimal loose grain on both ankles right away, but definitely within what I guess is tolerable. Otherwise these are prefectly great boots, and although they don't attain the level of abject perfection I'd built up in my mind they should have, I'm pleased with the purchase and am looking forward to beating them up for years to come.
    Also, although I measure slightly narrower than a D on a Brannock, and have always worn D's, I really am having no prob with the width in these. They really are barely any wider than any other D boots I own. Weird....and just an observation.
    Also worth noting, Viberg's customer service was EXCELLENT throughout my purchase/exchange process. ZERO hassle, and my refund was processed very promptly. Total thumbs-up there.
    The catch: IMHO, although excellent boots and still pretty unique even though others are beginning to imitate this look (I tried some made in USA Thursday's...they were nice and a good bargain, but not in the same league as the Vibergs), these are terribly overpriced. I own two pair of Red Wings (Iron Ranger, Rover) and these Vibergs are in no way twice(+) as good. Honestly, the Redwings should prob be more $$ and the Vibergs less $$. You can definitely feel the expensive components that went into the Viberg's sole, but I mean damn. If one has to exchange a pair, you can tack on about $110 in shipping, so then your looking at $780! All things considered, I'd prob have to recommend buying three pairs of Red Wings.
    Anyway...just wanted to add my two cents to the chorus. Keep up the good work Nick!

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 лет назад +1

      So grateful you shared your thoughts, B Dub! Especially because they made me feel less crazy - Vibergs *are* overpriced, right? And Red Wings *should* cost more, right?? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills sometimes. Certainly the Vibergs are better constructed and better quality than Red Wings but yeah, it's not two times better. I had wheeling on my Vibergs too, I don't care that much but like you said when a boot is this expensive I really don't want any defects at all. Some say I'm unrealistic for feeling taht way!
      Viberg is indeed super responsive, I really liked chatting with them on the phone. I'm kind of surprised you had to pay to exchange a faulty boot, though? That said they're so damn heavy, shipping is nightmarishly pricy.

    • @bdub8573
      @bdub8573 6 лет назад

      No, no cray at all there man.
      Vibergs are pretty top-notch, but I guess a little buyer's remorse is prob unavoidable when one makes such a pricey purchase of a boot one has only ever seen online. Like I said, I don't regret getting them. I just pretend I paid $400 for them.
      Viberg's position on the return was that my issue wasn't considered a defect (I sent pics), and I consider that reasonable (I reckon I'm a bit picky). That said, they didn't hesitate to take them back, and they also gave my exchange pair expedited shipping at no extra cost, so I was satisfied with that rightly or wrongly.

    You missed a very big reason why Viberg boots are expensive and what sets them apart from basically every other Goodyear weleted shoe makers (save for one): the welting process. Virtually every other shoe maker that use GYW use gemming: a piece of fabric that is used as an intermediary between the welt and the insole. The catch is, gemming is connected using glue. Thats it. Hence, every shoe made with this method relies on glue to be held together.
    Viberg on the other hand use a very thick insole that allows them to carve a piece of it out and raise it up to sew the welt to. This process is time consuming and what proper handwelting uses.

    • @spoolindsm127
      @spoolindsm127 4 года назад +2

      The shoe is still held together by the Goodyear Welt. Just the insole is glued to the fabric which is stitched to the welt along with the upper. The shoe won't come apart if the insole happens to separate. So not accurate to say the shoe is held together by glue...

      this is info from nicks not viberg, but they use the same kind of construction. the welt itself is significantly more waterproof since there aren't any holes in the leather like a goodyear welt. however, the leather itself can still soak in water since it isn't waterproof. if it's got some oils in it or waxes on it, then you can basically romp around in puddles with them. chromexcel is a good leather for that.

    So is this the boot that Allen Edmunds copied in their Higgins Mill boot? The only difference I can discern is that AE used a Goodyear welt and on certain pairs the welt itself is a different color than the upper. The AE version also weighs in at just over 1 and 1/2 pounds. The Higgins Mill is also cheaper but being made in the good old USA (not imported), I would expect that.

    • @Stridewise

      It is similar to the Higgins Mill, but yeah the Vibergs have the different welt and are way heavier. I guess they feel more sturdy, but the Higgins Mll fits me way better and I really prefer it, it's more reasonably priced and I think they're more versatile because they're not as wide and they don't have those gaudy eyelets, which I didn't really like on the Vibergs. Higgins Mill is an underrated boot.

For the same money as the Vibergs, you can have the Higgins Mill done in shell cordovan, Goodyear welted, leather-lined and finished with edge piping, and in a full size range. If you take your shoes that have stitchdown welts to a quality cobbler, it really isn't an issue. Also the inner seam is sewn to the leather midsole and the outer seam is sewn trought the midsole as well as the outsole. So you really down have to remove the inner seam. Obviously it messes with the look because you have one white stitch and then a faded white inner stitch but it'll look the same after a couple of months.
    Viberg and Alden are basicly the same when it comes to quality. Different construction methods but still the same. Take it from a cobbler who's re-crafted both brands.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 лет назад

      Damn Daniel, I really appreciate your comment! I think I just said it was harder to resole but it can still *be* resoled, right? You just might have a harder time finding a skilled cobbler. And it's harder to keep on resoling after many soles but that issue probably isn't an issue for most people buying it. I didn't mean for that to become the whole focus of the video, like it's worth mentioning but I don't think it's the biggest problem.

    •  6 лет назад

      Stridewise You’re absolutely right about the resoling part. Stitchdowns obviously use the upper for a welt and therefore it’s weaker (that’s the reason for the leather midsole) than a traditional welt.You made an honest review with a good amount of knowledge and the stitchdown wasn’t at all the sole focus, I just thought it was worth mentioning and yeah.. sadly good cobblers are hard to find these days.
      Thank you for your reply :) You make some really good and interesting videos! Have a kick ass day/evening 👊🏻

    Hm. I was going to get a pair of these someday, but if they're that much harder to resole... I think I'll stick with Red Wing. I don't want a pair of $700 boots that I can't get resoled because it's too hard or too much of a pain.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  6 лет назад

      They're not crazy hard to resole but when I say the leather is more likely to lose a bit of its shape, that's from Viberg themselves who told me that. The average joe probably wouldn't notice too much, to be fair.

    • @JesseDylanMusic
      @JesseDylanMusic 6 лет назад

      Hey, thanks for the reply! I'd be okay with the leather losing some shape, I bet, but if they could only be resoled once or twice, or if I had to seek out a specialized cobbler and pay a lot for the resole, that might be a dealbreaker...

    I bought pair from Brooklyn Clothing out of Calgary, the left boot fits perfectly and the right boot is to tight in the toe cap. I was hoping the right side would stretch but after 4 weeks the right side is still very tight and hurts my foot. After measuring the boots at the toe cap I have discovered that they are indeed different by a few millimetres on the right side and believe this to be a quality control issue. Not sure what I can do to remedy this.

    • @bfettrulez6734
      @bfettrulez6734 4 года назад

      I agree but there will always be a minimal break in period. These have to mold to your feet & that does take a little time. Break in on a pair of Vibergs should be no more than a month IMO. When people are still breaking their boots in after 6 months, u know it’s a crappy brand. I just bought my first pair of viberg service boots in black cxl. I have some viberg derbies & a pair of bison boots in 1035 last which I love. The bison boots took a month as did the derbies. Now, they fit like a glove. So far the service boots are seem to require zero break in.

    As someone with foot neuropathy for 25 years, a broken toe that never healed and a badly broken ankle years ago, ANY boot or shoe that protects your feet is worth it. However, speaking of reality, most people simply can't afford 700 for boots. Not to mention professional inserts from a podiatrist or Chiropractor. But if we learn from you guys and wear the right footwear, things will go better.

  • @sandgmiddleton6588

    To be fair, if you're considering a hand made boot such as these at this price and quality, why would you buy a pre-made from a retailer or online, when you should be contacting Viberg directly and voicing size/colour/construction concerns? They will make the boot to your exact foot profile if you give them an outline with all your dimensions...add a toe-cap, different colour leather/stitching, eyelet style, same thing. Get the boot for you, don't settle for pre-made. Especially for a top tier brand.
