You should consider reviewing another pair of Trumans. Since moving to Eugene, quality seems to be way up. I just got a pair and they seem flawless. They're also goodyear welted now instead of stitchdown.
@@timfok18 Not sure. It doesn't make for easier construction; pretty similar to the difficulty of stitch-down. But you can in theory get more re-soles out of a single pair (2-4 as opposed to 1-2).
I had the opposite experience with comfort and sizing. I had no issues at all with the heels. The boot did take shape after a week and a half. I sized down a half a size as usual with heritage style boots and it fits perfect. I did get the 20 last boots, so maybe that is why. But just wanted to give my experience. They are a bit more tougher to break in, but nothing as brutal as red wings iron ranger boots. I wore them laced on the lose side and gradually laced them tighter and tighter until i could laced them tight the way I like them (1 1/2 week later).
Thinks change/things stay the same. Truman has dropped the price of these boots to $480 and relocated their manufacturing to Eugene, OR since your review They have also changed the shank from fiberglass to steel, and have now gone to a GoodYear welt. I have a pair made in 2022 and QC is better than my Redwings, but not as good as Viberg or Grant Stone. The lasts used now are the 79 or you can get a 20 last if you have a wider foot. I'm a D width in most boots and these are extremely comfortable with about the same arch support as my 2030 Vibergs and Redwings. I really like the niche that Truman has created for themselves, slotting right in between Redwing Heritage line and the higher price PNW brands. I'm a fan! I love the Java Waxed Flesh so much, that I've also ordered a pair of their Coach Ramblers!
I bought two pair when they were in Penn. Still wearing both. Waxy Kudu/Dainite sole is my summer work boot and the Coyote Rough Out/Commando sole is my winter. Both boots have a couple years at least of sole left. I'm probably going to get the Dainite sole on my summer boot redone with a softer more cement friendly sole when the time comes. The fit was perfect from day one with really no break in.
I had a pair of heavy weight all leather mountaineering boots for almost 30 years. The boot maker advised Sno-Seal be applied for water resistance and consequently my feet never got wet. Turns out it was a waxed flesh leather that was used and I never realized that until recently when researching my purchase of boots from JR. I’ve since talked with Horween and for my new boots they advised very little care initially. Eventually applying a waxed base conditioner like Obenauf’s HD LP, Huberds shoe grease or Sno-Seal, but no oils as you mentioned
Came here to post this. Treating the boots with Obernauf's LP or another beeswax will keep the finish. (I did stop using Sno-Seal because of the petroleum-based ingredients, which allegedly also break down adhesives and leather over time... although I haven't experienced that. Just personal preference.)
I use my pair for work (FedEx Express Courier Driver). I apply Obenauf's LP on them so they look black, but these boots will probably last me well, even past retirement.
Good review. It appears that any high-end boot is going to cost about $500, which is what my Allen Edmons cost. The good thing about AE is their recrafting service ($120), where they restore the boot/shoe to almost new condition. I live in Minnesota and quality boots are essential in the winter. Keep up the great content.
My Higgins Mill boots from AE only cost $350! I've seen some people sell them for less. Might pick up some Sullivan Streets as well, which ones do you have?
I have the Sullivan Street dress boots, originally $500 but currently on sale for about $350. I also bought their Sutter Mill, Tate Chukka, and Surrey Chukka boots. In addition, I have seven pairs of AE shoes, which are great. As you can tell, I am an AE fan. I think they offer high-quality products and can sometimes be found on sale. I'm happy with all of my AE purchases.
Hi, I love your reviews. I have heard waxed rough-out leather was used to stop absorption of poison gas in the war. It had the benefit of being more comfortable with the smooth leather making contact with the foot. I had a pair of rough-out french 'ranger' boots. I used dubbin, a light rub of a beeswax candle and heat to re-wax.
Hey, love the videos. I would be so thankful if you could make a guide on how to care for your boots in different scenarios. For example: what to do when they get really wet, when they are really dirty, general maintenance to do week to week or month to month. Product recommendations would be great as well. Thanks, man.
Thanks! Yeah I'm planning to do a giant video of me conditioning all my boots but it would require like gallons of shoe cream haha, it'd be good though. For now here's a guide I made to waterproofing nice boots stridewise.com/how-to-waterproof-nice-boots/

Thursday Boots make the vanguard's in this same color and finished from Horween . They're called the "Waxed Cacao" I own a pair, the only downside in my opinion is the Cuban heel.
Nice! I saw a dude in a pair the other day and thought he was wearing Truman or Thursday but he was wearing Mark Albert, who do the same markalbertboots.com/collections/mark-albert-direct/products/uptown-boot-java-waxed-flesh

Hahah dude I’ve done the same thing. I discovered boots through stride wise reviews and started on the redwing IR, moved up to an Allen Edmonds Higgins Mill and now I’m looking at indys. My sneaker collection is collecting dust atm.
Awesome review as always. When I wanna buy a boots, I always check the review on your channel first. I have a question: I am thinking of buying these boots but also found out that Thursday Boots company has a very similar style called Vanguard in waxed cacao leather from Horween for half the price. What do you think about the Vanguard compare to these boots? Are they worth $250 more? Thank you for your help.
Hey man I'm honored you consider this channel an authority. Truman is definitely a different boot, it's a lot broader and bulkier and heavier and the leather is thicker. Nothing against Thursday boots, it's just a different beast. It depends on what you're after, I guess! Truman might last longer as they're so solid, just know they're not as versatile. Or cheap, haha.
Truman now does MTO for Java Waxed Boots tho. U can also choose dainite rubber outsole atm! Man I am drooling over these bad boys. How do u dress with these boots Nick?
Stridewise for sure man!! I’ve contemplated asking Vince if he could stitch another layer of leather inside the heel to eat up some of the volume, but I have a feeling that would be difficult, lol!! Plus I’ve never heard of anyone doing that
@@DalesLeatherworks I wonder if Vince is watching both of your vids. My Javas seem to fit snug. Heel is nice and tight and doesn't seem chunky! Love them.
@@SugarMapleForge that's good to know, they may have tightened up the heel a little bit more recently!! though I actually like the generous fit of the heel when I size right, I find it generous in a good way!! Glad yours fit right!!! :-D
@@DalesLeatherworks Please ask them to do it. In the Nicks factory tour video from Wranglerstar's channel, shows Nicks always doubles up on the inside curve of the heel and that's how they achieve that snug heel fit.
I waited 6 weeks and concur that the heel is very roomy and can create some instability especially if you have weak ankles. I wear them on a construction site all day then walk three or four blocks to the subway. Mine are a little different and have two sets of speed lace hooks on the top two eyelets.
Sorry man I haven't! The sizing is a huge pain in the ass with Nick's, I have to print out pieces of paper and sketch my foot and mail them in and everything... haven't had the patience yet haha. Will get to it though

Hey Johnathan, they told me they've changed their sizing a bit so you might want to reach out to them for some info. I've asked them to send it to me so I can make an update and they keep not doing it haha
Thanks for the new vid! But you were showing off walking straight through that puddle, there was plenty of room to go around it. Kidding! No sense in babying a good pair of boots, right?
I really struggle with whether or not I should kick the crap out of a new pair of boots or baby them, and sometimes I make the wrong decision (like with Taft's Jack) and they get all scratched up! But these Truman boots seemed like they could take it :)
great review dude. I have been meaning to pick these up. Good to know what your first hand experiences were like. ONE thing that bugs me about Truman is that they apply that white stitching in most of their shoes (around the toe). It looks fine in these in most of thier boots, white stitching just sticks out like a sore thumb. I love the structure design on them though. I sort of wish i got a different color for my Taft Dragons. The Rust ones I got look way too similar to these lol. Im about to have 2 boots that look the same :/
Didn't think about the white stitching being an issue, people say the same thing about the line of white in the sole of Helm boots but I like it, too. I guess it's the sneaker head in me! Do you really think the Dragon looks the same as this? Taft's rust is nice and golden colored, these Trumans are super dark!
Great boots, if you can get them in a size that fits! If you are like most people and your left and right feet are different sizes, then this may be a challenge. It was for me. I am an 8D on my left foot and a 7.5E on the right. Truman recommended that I go with their 7.5D and, in reality, it is probably the closest fit for me, but it's is not a good fit. I really needed a 7.5E, but they don't make boots in an E width. I would have had to jump to a EE, which would be way too wide for my D left foot. I'm left hoping that the 7.5 D will stretch enough to become comfortable. So far, it's not looking good. I'll be looking into a pair of Nick's Americana next to see if I can get a better fit with their boots.
How long had you had those boots when you made this video, Nick? Crazy how you were able to just squeeze the structured toe box down. You sure they weren't unstructured toe caps? If you had only had them for a few weeks by that point then Truman had to have been using some of the worst celastic they could find because that didn't seem right. Disappointing about the arch support too. I'm surprised they still made your top five boots list, even for being the toughest. At least when you consider Whites or Nicks - similar price points and both build their boots (work and heritage) like tanks but with stellar arch support. Not to mention legit structured toe boxes.
The heel was not made for this last. The back part is not shaped right. If there is no lining it is not a good boot The reviewer mentioned arch support there is non. The boot does not fit you. After wearing a laced boot for 1 to 2 weeks the opening where you lace them should come closer so the holds your feet. The material used is excellent. Workmanship I have no comment since I have not seen how they produce the boot. The stitchdown is good but they probably forgot one operation that would make it better.
Same exact as you and I wear an orthotic. Truman rep. told me a Size 9 would be just fine as (I think) they don't have 1/2 sizes. Said it might be tight but ok. Eventually went with Iron Rangers in a Size 9 Wide. They fit like a glove. In a year or so I may get these Truman's too.
Hey there's something for everyone! Glad you like it. Talk to them before you buy it though because I think the last has changed a bit since this review
Waxed flesh, from what I understand, is full grain leather that has been sanded down a bit to remove any imperfections in the leather. then they use wax to put the hairs down so it looks smooth. Since it's from horween it should be really high quality
The middle cross commando sole portion of the sole actually pokes the bottom of my mid foot which makes these shoes a pain to walk in. I had these for 8 months, I would recommend dainite only, the commando sole looks cool but very uncomfortable.
If you are paying $500 for a boot, they should come custom-fit to your foot. I can't really argue up the $150+ more for one of these over a Red Wing or something. There just isn't THAT much of a difference in quality. Considering I can get custom-fit Nicks for just $20 more than this, I can't imagine buying these one-size-fits-all boots.
Prices are at 440 now 420 with discount code. I think they had qc issues and they were charging too much. Hopefully mine wont have the issues yours have when they finish making my boot.
I ordered em before they had that spinner discount code thing unless it only works when you're viewing on a desktop. When did you order yours? I placed my order April 22 and still haven't shipped yet, maybe they are paying more attention to qc now?
So I looked over the boots and they are flawless. Mine aren't stitchdown, they are the 270 storm welt. I really like them, the soles mean business and the leather is very thick and supple. Edit - i reinspected them again and found a slice on right shoe where the toes would bend behind the cap toe part. Its really deep. Im kinda disappointed in this. 450 bucks to have damaged boots. I emailed them but, not sure what they will say.
Nick I can't find any where a vid or written review of these vs iron rangers I know you have or had both can you please tell me are thetrumans worth the extra $ here in Sydney these will be $600 plus shipping are they really that much better than the red wings? Can you tell me or anyone please tell me what the difference is between the two? Could be a cool vid? If you know of a link can you forward to me please
$600 to get them in oz, eek. That's a lot of pressure. Truman has cooler leathers than Red Wing and they stand out more. That's about the long and short of it.
Can you review the Woodlands tractor Sole boots? They are extremely popular in India and yes no ...no company in India makes as sturdy and durable boots than Woodland.
Yeah I've already filmed it, actually! It's over 16 minutes long I'm a bit worried it's too much boot talk even for my viewers, haha. Should be up in the next couple of weeks
Excellent, I'm looking forward to it since reviews on Oak Street Bookmakers are hard to find. Also, Redwing just put out a dress boot named "Williston". Don't know if you plan on reviewing it, but I would certainly be interested.
I wonder if they watched your video and changed their QC. I just got mine and don't see any of these issues that are clearly present in your pair. Also I wear a d width ordered a d width and they actually seem a bit narrow! Next time I'm going with ee. Maybe they watched your video! :)
The opening for your feet is a bit tight. It takes some effort to get your feet in the boot. I purchased the coyote rough out version which looks great and feels great once you get your foot inside the boot.
can you do a review on Dayton Service boots? they've got a thick cork insole, Canadian and thick leather. i don't see any other youtubers reviewing them
I’ve had mine (exact pair) 6 weeks. Great review. I will not purchase boots from Truman again. Definitely not worth the money. Spend the extra 150 on Viberg. Fit like Walmart Boots.
Man I am learning about brands I never heard of!!! I want the best walking boot $ can buy. I would like to find a custom maker. Who makes a last based on my foot.
Ah, my mistake, I thought there was some connection between them. Either way this is a commando sole made by an Itshide affiliate and not at all a Vibram sole.
Vibram originated and patented the Commando sole, the articles I read (www.heddels.com/2014/11/know-soles-8-common-options/) say that Vibram makes all the Commando soles but I guess some other companies may have bought permission to make them too. So it doe originate from Vibram but this particular one may not have been produced in their company - might make an edit. Thanks guys
Horrible customer service experience. I bought 3 pairs and 2 were built to the wrong size. They took one back and refused to take the other one back since it's been 2 months! One pair came as a size 11 and a half size larger for the other foot. Their Quality Control is non existent. Your purchase is like a shot in the dark, you might get lucky or you might end up with a beautiful pair of boots that simply doesn't fit.
@@liljuanito123 I ordered them in Natural Rowdy smooth leather on Tuesday. Planning on ordering the Autumn CXL next month. I really like the java color but I'm not big on waxed rough out/suede.
@@holdthatblaow man, just checked the site again and they're out of the black waxy, i waited too long. I really want the black chromexcel, i may wait but they just stocked java flesh back... so tempting.
That is a super popular belief but it actually is slightly corrected, that's why it's so smooth - Horween themselves said as much in my interview with them: "“The whole world thinks Chromexcel is full grain because when you look closely at it, you can see the grain. But we correct it, we just correct it so little that we leave part of the grain on the leather.” stridewise.com/top-grain-vs-full-grain-vs-split-grain-leather/

Great review. Just wondering what the interior looks like. Does it have a gusseted tongue? What does the insole look like? Cheers
So what happens when the wax leaves? Does the leather start to crack and they're done?
Just buy leather wax and take care of your boots. :)
What is size should I get for these models?
-I’m a 9US (D) in Iron Rangers
-A 9.5US men for Adidas & New Balance sneakers
Contact the boot maker.
Are these the 79 last?
The opening theme music to this video sounds like Beast of Burden by The Rolling Stones 😉
Nonetheless!
You mentioned a Vibram Sole but i think I saw a Goodyear Sole on this pair
How do you retreat the wax? Or how do you clean/condition those?
wide heel? I love it!
Hey there's something for everyone! Glad you like it. Talk to them before you buy it though because I think the last has changed a bit since this review
These boots are made with Horween brown waxed flesh right? If so do you know if it’s considered a full grain leather?
Waxed flesh, from what I understand, is full grain leather that has been sanded down a bit to remove any imperfections in the leather. then they use wax to put the hairs down so it looks smooth. Since it's from horween it should be really high quality
@@carlitos366everything you wrote is incorrect. Erase it.
@@matttherrien9608 how is it incorrect then
@@carlitos366 it's rough out, right? It's the hide reversed. Not suede.
Looks a lot like Viberg service boot and that is a good thing
Yeah it's up there in quality but not quite as great as Viberg imo
Does Vibram have a factory in England? This Commando sole must've been made by Itshide.
right those were made by dainite in britian
Glad to see the cuffs down
Back when I was buying jeans with a 30 inch inseam and I didn't need to cuff
I'm going to save up and buy a pair, they look fantastic and appear to be very sturdy. I hope the company ships to Europe.
They are very sturdy, that's for sure! Good luck with the purchase.
The custom fitting is a really good point for expensive boots, I'll be sure to mention that in future reviews at this price point. Thanks, Reeze!
Truman boot have any arch support?
Prices are at 440 now 420 with discount code. I think they had qc issues and they were charging too much. Hopefully mine wont have the issues yours have when they finish making my boot.
I ordered em before they had that spinner discount code thing unless it only works when you're viewing on a desktop. When did you order yours? I placed my order April 22 and still haven't shipped yet, maybe they are paying more attention to qc now?
@@liljuanito123 I just ordered them last week. I didnt hear back from them cause I think they are working on it. I also used the spinner code.
@@MetalsForBrunch awesome! Mine are actually getting delivered tomorrow. So 31 days to ship out. I will let you know how they came out.
Good luck, Luis!
Just buy red wing iron rangers, better construction, more durability, way cheaper and last but not least red wings have a good history behind them .
I don't know if I'd say Red Wings are more durable but they're certainly very very durable boots and better value for money. Go Red Wings!
For the price I would rather get the Nick's Falcon. Much more customizable with different leathers and sole options.
Agree, that's a better boot
Drinking game: take a shit every time he’s says “chunky” 😂
Can you review the Woodlands tractor Sole boots? They are extremely popular in India and yes no ...no company in India makes as sturdy and durable boots than Woodland.
Just ordered a pair after jumping on the waiting list you wouldn't happen to know the turnaround on these?
A few weeks for me, but ask them yourself!
Will you make a review of a pairs of OakStreetBootmaker's boots. I heard they made very good boots and can compare with Viberg
Yeah I've already filmed it, actually! It's over 16 minutes long I'm a bit worried it's too much boot talk even for my viewers, haha. Should be up in the next couple of weeks
@@Stridewise everyone come here to watch a review video. I like your videos, so i hope you can make more :),
Excellent, I'm looking forward to it since reviews on Oak Street Bookmakers are hard to find. Also, Redwing just put out a dress boot named "Williston". Don't know if you plan on reviewing it, but I would certainly be interested.
Did they change these? On the site they’re $440 and Goodyear welted
Yeah they did, this video's a bit out of date
I wonder if they watched your video and changed their QC. I just got mine and don't see any of these issues that are clearly present in your pair. Also I wear a d width ordered a d width and they actually seem a bit narrow! Next time I'm going with ee. Maybe they watched your video! :)
They've changed a fair bit since I made this video (including their prices), I might need to do an update!
@@Stridewise Yeah it seems them have. I think with shipping I paid around 450 USD for mine. An update would be awesome! Love the videos.
@@SugarMapleForge Thanks man! I wasn't so great at it when this video came out so I really appreciate that one haha
The opening for your feet is a bit tight. It takes some effort to get your feet in the boot. I purchased the coyote rough out version which looks great and feels great once you get your foot inside the boot.
Glad they worked for you!
can you do a review on Dayton Service boots? they've got a thick cork insole, Canadian and thick leather. i don't see any other youtubers reviewing them
They JUST arrived in the mail! Probably won't be a review up for a good month or two, but be patient :)
@@Stridewise thanks for the prompt answer. I appreciate your fair reviews and look forward to the video
Love, love to hear it. Thanks Christopher
I can’t believe this video is 4 years old… 😮
@Stridewise How do your Truman Boots compare to your Dayton Service Boots?
Daytons fit better and they're less blocky.
j
Java another name for coffee..coffee was was once nicknamed "Java", maybe because that area was known for coffee
Any idea if these are the 79 or 55 last?
79! Well they do now, not sure what these ones are
I’ve had mine (exact pair) 6 weeks. Great review. I will not purchase boots from Truman again. Definitely not worth the money. Spend the extra 150 on Viberg. Fit like Walmart Boots.
I'm really enjoying Tricker's and Dayton right now, Dayton make them for your foot's measurements as well. Got a discount code if you want it :)
Could you also flex your toes in your boots during the review to see how well the toe box of the boots flex please?
So you're telling me Thursdays are more comfortable than these boots?
what boots for south FL?
Man I am learning about brands I never heard of!!! I want the best walking boot $ can buy. I would like to find a custom maker. Who makes a last based on my foot.
I don't know about making *lasts* but you want a brand like Nicks or Whites if you want boots modeled after you!
Inquire with Brian the Bootmaker. U can email him at : Brian@rRoleClub.com
Isn't that an Itshide commando sole? Same company that makes Dainite soles?
Itshide and Dainite are two different companies.
Ah, my mistake, I thought there was some connection between them. Either way this is a commando sole made by an Itshide affiliate and not at all a Vibram sole.
The Vibram company makes Commando soles!
Commando sole is a type of sole that is made by many manufacturers. This pair is Itshide though and not Vibram.
Thanks guys
This is alpha male boot bratha
Notice!: Truman uses foam, and fiberglass shanks, instead of cork, and metal shanks. Beware.
Damn I wanted to be first lol, awesome vid!
You're first in my heart, Matthew
BIRCHEES Birch Tar Conditioner & Wax
those guys are hardly ever in business hey
This company drags their feet and takes an exceptionally long time you deliver any kind of refund. I would avoid them
Would love to see a review of Markalbertboots locally made in Pennsylvania new company makes beautiful boots! I have no relation too then just a fan!
So many boot companies, so little time!
Any coupon codes
Beware of DHL when ordering from Truman’s boots!
Fast Forward 5 yrs. $480
What last is that?
Your shoes are always untied in these videos... perhaps you should double knot =)
You're out of control
Truman sells a wax now to re wax this leather.
You're right, just checked. Can't decide between java flesh or the black waxy commander.
Chromexcel is not corrected grain leather.
Well thanks for that info! Very good to know. I appreciate it :)
Darn, you could buy a pair of Nicks for a little more.. by the way.. review Nicks 😂
Heel is too big.
Fist!
Frist!
Aww🙁
for that money you can buy a real boot.
Your pants are about two inches too short lol
Yeah I hadn't quite figured out pants yet when I made this video
@@Stridewise I was just joking as it seems like everyone in boot videos does it on purpose to show off the boots for the camera... but I still think it looks funny... we all that "high waters" where I'm from 😆
Worthless boot i bought truman and nicks same time but truman boots sucks just like 200 dollar boot but nicks i love the grip the quality
Horrible customer service and a non existent quality control department. The owner is also a mean SOB who doesn’t deserve my business.
