    Good video
    But on 0:46 it says all you need to know about the club industry and DJ world today and the problems it has
    Quote " The fact is if I'm booking a DJ , I look at his social media and then I make a judgement "
    So that DJ could be brilliant at mixing records , create a vibe
    But you don't want to give him a break because he's not popular ???
    That's just a fine example of a promoter, booking agent etc being lazy right there and that's the issue today

      That’s not really just the promoters fault. Unknown DJs just don’t sell tickets. Of course some promoters will just be greedy but we’re in an age where it does take a lot of money to setup a night - club booking fee, fee for DJ, travel costs, equipment hire, event promotion etc. It’s not like the 90s where people could pick out any abandoned warehouse and setup a night at *a very low cost.* If you combine that with growing festival culture which allows casual music listeners to go to see 25 big names play in 1 day, it puts pressure on the promoter because you’re going to have less people going to clubs.

    • @FSwiftDJ
      @FSwiftDJ 5 лет назад +2

      @@TwStTempo club's and bars can't continue shelling out for EDM brand djmag top100 artists mate with pre recorded DJ sets , they might sell tickets but surely it's easier to book unknown djs with a passion for it that don't want loads of money and build them up like how it was back in the day
      There are too many so called djs ( artists ) buying controllers and making tunes on FL studio to get in the djmag top 100 , they simply are skipping the basics and foundations of DJ skill or technique for popularity

The world is not going backward so we have to get used to having social media around. I believe that it's smart to become more aware of your own behavior on those platforms and how it affects your life as an artist and person. From the artist's perspective, I see there's tons of value in this video about how to properly brand yourself on those platforms. Amazing tips which I completely agree on as well. • @TwStTempo
    @TwStTempo 5 лет назад +2

    A lot of people here are acting like social media is the main issue at play in the deterioration of the club, but it’s really not, it’s a combination of a lot of factors. A few more examples:
    In this age where it’s so easy to find obscure music online and DJ on CDJs, the standard of DJing has increased significantly to where someone inexperienced can string together a decent set, so of course social media is going to be a deciding factor.
    Festival culture and massive lineups are a huge problem to the local club scene, which is where talent is cultivated. If you’re only casually into music - why would you bother spending so much money and time going to so many club nights, when you can just go to one big festival lineup?
    Commercialisation of the club as a space plays a huge role too. In the 90s people could set up raves in abandoned spaces at little to no cost, nowadays - more often than not - you’ll have to fork out a large fee to even get a night in the venue. As a result you’re going to have to charge bigger cover fee, which no one is going to want to pay if you’re an unknown local up and comer.
    It’s a bit hypocritical for some of these bigger DJs to complain about social media being the “end of the dance floor” and “damaging the club space” when they are actively allowing their agents to charge upwards of 25,000 per DJ set and play at festivals, which is arguably as damaging to the club scene.

    Great documentary and very well done for tackling the subject. Personally, I couldn't agree more with Annie Mac and Carl Cox about phones removing people from the whole experience of getting lost in the music and atmosphere. I can't stand 'screenheads' constantly filming and obstructing other people's view at live shows. So glad I went clubbing back in the 90s/early 2000s when smartphones and social media weren't around.

  • @Waxadisc

    I have been djing in clubs since 1993 and I can tell you, the dancefloor before phone cameras was way more fun and engaging. The club I worked for had one professional photographer who would do a few shots, put his camera away and then he would go off dancing :) The DJ could do what they were paid to do and his/her set was experienced far greater by the crowd. I never considered it before that if you are being interrupted for a split second for a picture with someone, that can throw your set off track if you are not concentrating fully. A Good documentary , thanks

    I've been club manager ( big successful venue )
    Let me tell you right now
    All these Artists here apart from few have not a clue
    It's ok for them, they have made it !!!
    But let me tell you how many super skilled mixing djs without a following get over looked today , you have dj's pretending to be dj's today as a result ( brand wannabe dj's ) who can't mix records together without computer tech aid , the multi skilled dj's are left to even try and play for free to get out there or find themself's on RUclips etc making demos
    That's the reality of all this
    In the rave days a DJ as talented at mixing like Carl Cox , probably not many knew of him at first , but he built his popularity by letting his DJ mixing do the talking

I blame DJ tech companies also for giving them the platform because if it was not easy to DJ today , we wouldn't have these problems , I mean some these djs can't mix on cdj 800 even let alone a Technics turntable

We called people who came just to bee seen "Eye candy" & they were not appreciated. Later, Always ignored the "kids" strapped to their phones texting because they were not experiencing the vibe. Crazy how technology can separate & dehumanize us. Hopefully, we can all agree to come back togther device-free. Peace Love Unity Respect.

    Overall an insightful documentary but it would have really benefitted from a marketer's perspective. Social media is also responsible for the recent growth of electronic music. It led to new festivals, megabrands and ultimately a lot of new jobs. Dance music wouldn't be where it is today without social media and a lot of these megastars would still be bedroom DJs without it.

    Social media is what we make it, no need to demonize it. We just need to be open minded and willing to adapt and thrive than complain

    One of the reasons what im asking myself all the time. why Im working so hard? why I use to do a live performance? .. Im not falling down in depression or something like that but. is really hard to make people remember you after a performance with the actual situation. maybe everybody had a great time but for a club resident DJ like me is very hard to make people remember you after a performance. because everybody is paying attention to the phone. Maybe we have to start think how to use all of this in a positive way because this is our reality right now and I don't think there will be an awareness about all this very soon

      They will remember you.
      You see if they record thru their phone they post on facebook and Instagram you get more viewers and more users will share it and there. Embrace technology

      @@DJNicShogun It is a double-edged sword. If I'll ask them to follow me thats will happen. but immediately will kill the vibe. only when im doing a performance on a festival or big party where I'll have a big Led screen I can put my name and they will have everything recorded on the phone. most of my performances are in nightclubs where the managers are interested in promoting theirs clubs. not the DJ , in places like that you don't have choices if you don't want to kill the vibe. But that does not mean that you do not have followers who do not enjoy the experience. yes there are and there are many in my area .btw thank you so much for your comment.!

      Alex Armani the point of the film is t o say it's all about the music.
      All these dj's and producers looking for more likes etc on social media, their music should be doing the talking not them.
      That's supposedly the point of DJing or making music , talking without words....
      Well that was in the old days when we had Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles,Ron Hardy instead of Danny Howard and Nervo who say absolutely nothing with their music (or in real life as well actually).
      We want artist to create art not computers , that's the point of art.

    as absolutely everything, each thing & new tech. has its pros & cons. its up to each one of us to decide if we will be controlled by the devices and numbers of likes & plays or we will go back to actually listening and deciding on our own who we will like instead of being dictated who we should like & follow.

      although it does not solve the social media addiction. personal tip - turn off all the notifications from facebook, IG, twitter and so on.

    I am mixing Trance on Vinyl only, but I dont even try to get out of my bedroom into this business. I just dont want to be in this "new world" with Paris Hilton as DJ for example. I really enjoy vinyl mixing process, I enjoy music that I play. That's enough for me. Ok, I dont have crowd infront of me, noone even knows that there somewhere I am existing. So what? But I dont need to do selfpromo in socials to show how "cool" I am, I dont need to get in touch with clubowners or event organisers etc. And most important: nobody will tell "Aaa, a DJ? You are one of those Sync button pushers, yes?". I just like that I am honest with myself and I am not trying to be someone that I am not. :D

    • @langlang420
      @langlang420 5 лет назад +1

      @Caleb HOLLOWAY The message of this video is about how social media has become too important in determining who is thought of as a good and or popular dj and is a good dj determined by likes or by skill. It's also about how club behavior which used to be about actual dancing is now a video and selfie fest. It is not about the same old beat to death vinyl vs. digital nonsense. Spinning 2 black discs does not make you or anyone else superior to any other skilled dj who chooses to use a different method.

      @JONATHAN VILLALOBOS damn. Went way way back to name drop those two guys. So if we're playing that game how about FLASH and JAZZY JEFF whose skill is unquestioned and now use and rep digital equipment. Records don't mean anything they are just tools just like a file and a sucky vinyl dj won't suddenly become carl cox because he has some serato software. Real dj's can and do spin on anything and with all types of media.

    • @jonathanvillalobos7994

      @@langlang420 Well allow me to retort.""Went way way back to name drop those two guys"" Those "Two guys" Are still around and touring around the globe.But I'll get back to those "two guys" in a bit.Now, as for GRANDMASTER FLASH,& D.J. jazzy jeff.(who stole his name from an old school rapper)Are paid by serato & pioneer to play that software. (sellouts)just because flash,and jeff play digital that dont make me wanna.Im a leader,not a followerREAL.D.J.s' PLAY VINYL.Why can't digital djs just be honest and tell the truth.and say it's fake,and cheating?It's okay just play and move the crowd.and move on.Now,getting back to those "Two guys"BAD BOY BILL & RICHARD VISSION.a few years ago they did a back to vinyl tour.where they played nothing but real VINYL. in a Q&A w/ Bad boy bill.a young DJ ask bill for advice.he ask what can I do to make it?Bill replied,they is no answer to that,you have to practice,there's no magic button.then the host said yes there is,it's called the SYNC BUTTON.then bill said and I QUOTE "Oh yeah,it's CHEATING!""(finally some honesty)When a reporter,ask Richard why go back to VINYL?He said and I Quote ""digital djing is so easy my mother can do it!"" Damn!he said he needed a challenge when djing instead of just pressing play.DAMN!!I bet half those so called "superstar djs couldn't mix on two records to save their life.(laughs)Anyway just do you!! Play whatever you want!!Have a good day mate!😉
