In a Black History Month special, Democracy Now! airs excerpts of the 1970 documentary, "King: A Filmed Record... Montgomery to Memphis," a rarely seen Oscar-nominated feature about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the rise of the civil rights movement. This clip shows scenes from the three historic marches from Selma to the capital Montgomery. The first took place March 7, 1965, and became known as "Bloody Sunday" after police attacked 600 marchers with billy clubs and tear gas. The second march came the following Tuesday, attracting more than 2,500 protesters, who were forced to turn around by police after crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge. We hear from Dr. King as he successfully crosses the bridge along with thousands of others on the third march, under the watch of federal troops mobilized by President Johnson. Finally, we will hear Dr. King's address in the capital of Montgomery, where the march triumphantly ends.
REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.: We have the right to walk the highway. We have the right to walk to Montgomery if our feet can get us there. We must let the nation know and we must let the world know that it is necessary to protest this threefold evil: the problem of the denial of the right to vote to police brutality-that we continue to face and faced in its most vicious form last Sunday-and then the attempt to block First Amendment privileges.
REPORTER: How do you feel about the protection being given you on this march?
REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.: I think this is a real demonstration of the commitment of the federal government to protect the constitutional rights of Negro citizens. The protection has been a very thorough, as you can see. And the men are working under the guidance, and certainly under the power and influence, of the federal government to see that things are carried out in an orderly manner. So I think that everybody has to recognize that this symbolizes a new commitment and a new determination on the part of the federal government to take the kind of vigorous line that will assure the rights of the Negro citizens of this nation.
REPORTER: Dr. King, how are things shaping up now for tomorrow?
REV. DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.: Things are shaping up beautifully. We have people coming in from all over the country. I suspect that we will have representatives from almost every state in the union, and naturally a large number of people from the state of Alabama. And we hope to see, and we plan to see, the greatest witness for freedom ever taken place-that has ever taken place on the steps of a capitol of any state in the South. And this whole march adds drama to this total thrust.
Last Sunday, more than 8,000 of us started on a mighty walk from Selma, Alabama. They told us we wouldn't get here. There were those who said that we would get here on their-over their dead bodies. But all the world today knows that we are here, and we are standing before the forces of power in the state of Alabama, saying, "We ain't going to let nobody turn us around."
Today I want to tell the city of Selma, today I want to say to the state of Alabama, today I want to say to the people of America and the nations of the world, that we are not about to turn around. We are on the move now. Yes, we are on the move, and no wave of racism can stop us. The burning of our churches will not deter us. The bombing of our homes will not dissuade us. The beating and killing of our clergymen and young people will not divert us. The wanton release of their known murderers will not discourage us. We are on the move now. Like an idea whose time has come, not even the marching of mighty armies can halt us. We are moving to the land of freedom."

Brittney Carr..... really? Then how come so many gave up on voting? How come so many don't remember what this was all about? White supremacy wants the Black youth to forget. I work in Selma, and its the highest homicide rate per capita in Alabama, already #3 highest in the Nation. On a brighter note, there are many inspirational leaders trying to improve things. May God bless all of them!

I had just turned 11 years old at that time. I can still see those days in my minds eye. Being black and waking each day to the fear of what ugly package racism would be delivered. I feared for the protestors as well as myself and family. Then as a child and even today as an elderly black woman, I never understood the hate, it still boggles my mind today. Finding yet, that no matter how I try to get those to understand and believe that racism is a prevalent today as it was back then, the only difference is that they have found sophisticated ways of presenting it. But to those of us who has seen its evil face it can cover it with outer make up, all that it wants, for we see through its disguise.

MLK the conscience of America and the world. His legacy resonates more than ever today because racism is the most overt form of hate for mankind, it will not disappear before God's intervention, because racism comes from the evil spirit.Pure and simple. The seed of Cain, son of Satan, is running through humanity since the beginning, when Cain killed Abel, Abel was his half brother, Eve slept with the Serpent, so there is two types of human beings walking on this earth, the evil one, Cain's offspring (Satan offspring) see Genesis 3-13,15 and Genesis 4-16,25. The God's offspring is from Adam, Genesis 5-1,5. So it is a war that will end only with Jesus-Christ intervention. Better be on the right side of the story.

Let alone in all those cultures, they have fought against themselves, killed themselves in the name of god or whatever monarchy at the time.
The illusion is prejudice that’s instituted by large entities with that type of control. It just doesn’t start with peasants mustering up malcontent towards random cultures, it’s the whispers and gossip spread from the source of power.
That’s how religion was distributed to every country essentially, evangelics and clerics destined for one sole purpose, to institute the word of god, and the law of god, delegated by those in power.

One day, you’ll know Who you’re offending and what He offered you, but you’re suffering from immense blindness and can’t see Light. All you have to do is ask instead of mock. 🙏🏾 The one thing I know without even knowing who you are is you’re miserable on a level you can’t get free of. You’re tormented with confusion and this life grips you with a bitter reality. 😓 I pray for you because you serve satan and yet you breathe God’s breath. Jesus died for you just as He did for me. It’s a free gift, but sadly those that choose satan (and self) for their life raft will always sink...actually stay sunken.📖✨ I’m so glad He’s patient in His return because ppl like you need a last hour to know that eternity in hell 🔥is a longer time than it took for Him to come back and end your story in misery! So be glad He delays His coming! 😉📖✨ We’re patient because He told us already, so that’s why your words are aimless.

I'm Indian and I don't live in America. But I'm here because I had to study the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movt. as part of my English major. I'm proud to say that MLK was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, the father of my nation, to use non-violence in his activism.
It's wonderful to observe from MLK's speech that he was not against white people, but against segregation and racism, unlike how it is in our day (as far as I've seen on woke American tiktok), where blacks are against whites, and whites feel "white guilt" (I'm not generalising) and everyone is just fighting with each other. MLK understood that it's not a black v/s white war, but blacks and whites v/s injustice, racism, and segregation.
He's a powerful orator; I got chills with every word he spoke. God was really with him. America needs God even now, so does the whole world. God bless America, land of the free, home of the brave

I've been sitting here the last hour reading thru these posts. I'm a Black man. Born in 1960. That's right I actually experienced what many of you talk about. Had to beat down those obstacles and succeed. What's going on today happened 50 years ago. I see so much hate beginning to lace itself within the soul of our young people. Please stop. You don't realize it but you're sounding like the racists did when I was little. If people want to help, let them help. All White people are not racist and all Black people are not your friend. Sound judgement and common sense should have taught you that by now. I lived in VA (BIRTHPLACE of slavery) all my life. I ALWAYS heard and read the stories of racism in the South. I recently moved here (FL) 2 years ago and what a culture shock. I finally realized why I love myself (thank you Panthers). And before y'all go off let me make something VERY CLEAR. No Black Panther EVER told me to hate or kill or lunch anyone. What they did instill In me was to love myself, be the best person you can be and ALWAYS be morally stronger than your enemy because if you're not, you'll become him and you won't even realize it. That's how hate infects. It doesn't care about race either. It just cares about destroying people; just like racism does. So young people, you have a one time opportunity to create another progressive narrative for change. Don't let hate eat you up like it did your enemy. This battle is about human morals. So why would you deny someones help simply because of how he looks!!
    Yeah.
    See what you just did.
Hate infects everything it touches. It destroys and demolishes everything that touches it. We have more allies than you guys realize. Don't be foolish and create another enemy yourselves.

Charismatic social movements tend to create a quasi-religious atmosphere, on the lines religious enthusiast revivalism. I believe religion is an inherent feature of the human spirit; what Nietzsche called the "Dionysian"; It is the collective conscience of the crowd, of being at one with all, and losing one's ego. It is a force that can be used for good, but is as often used for evil, and can lead to collectivism and totalitarianism.
