  • In this game of Hail Caesar we see armies of approximately 520 points each do battle. A Pyrrhic army fights a Republican Roman Army. I use the opportunity to try out some house rules. These are written here
    1. Triplex Acies!
    Triari, Hastati and Principes will be fielded in STANDARD size unit.
    Hastati and Principes can ‘exchange’ positions (SWAP PLACES) in the battle line if within 6 inches of each other once per game. Similar to ‘Feigned Flight’ the unit in contact (for example Hastati) can swap its position with a unit of Principes IF from the same division AND WITHIN 6 inches to the rear IF the Division commander passes a command roll. If successful the units swap places AND the unit in contact recovers 1 stamina. ALL units in the division must carry out the exchange at the same time.
    2. Rear Support ‘Like for like’. / ‘Who’s that in my rear’?
    Pike can only be supported from the rear by other pike.
    Hoplites can only get rear support from other Hoplites of the same or lesser quality or Skirmishers with javelin or bow from their division
    Triari, Hastati and Principe can only get rear support from velites from their division.
    Warband can only get rear support from other Warband of the same quality or lesser quality and from their own division (tribe)
    3. “Whoa Nelly”
    No REAR Support from mounted troops AT ALL. Even mounted supporting mounted.
    4. Deep Pike.
    Pike can be fielded as LARGE units but the increase is in DEPTH not WIDTH. Large pike blocks cost 39 points, (+7 points) with stats increased as appropriate:
    Clash 9, Sustain 9 Short range 3/0 Long range 0 Save 4+ Stamina 8

    Thank You, Scott & Hayley, a great game to watch and follow and certainly a useful introduction to Hail Ceasar II, especially as a copy has just landed on my doorstep. As ever, Scott, lovely armies, Cheers👍

      Occasionally we made mistakes. I keep forgetting that units can operate on initiative when within certain distance and I think I might have forgotten that troops lose their charge bonus against pikes attacked frontally on one occasion. Regardless, these are interesting and dare I say ‘good’ rules.

    A great video, really 😂like your thoughts and house rules on the use of triple acies formation, they are similar to what we used when playing with Neil Thomas’s Ancient and Medieval rules. As mentioned in your previous video we shall give them @ try when we next have the republican Romans on the table next.

    Scott, don't worry about the pronunciation of principes. Using a hard c (like a k) is perfectly acceptable for classical Latin, some ecclesiastical Latin users pronounce a soft c when placed before an 'I' but no arguing with the church (or should I say Kirk!). The legacy of attending a school founded by the church 700 years ago, and partially remembered 4th form Latin lessons from both classical and ecclesiastical Latin masters. Oh and a great games and love the look of the armies.

    Great job Scott. Way to get the kids involved! You have 1 more daughter than me. I think my daughter number 3 might be my war gamer too. My son is a bull in a china shop, so he made me too nervous to touch my troops 😂).

    Great video! I'm just putting the finishing touches on 2 units of Tarantine hoplites as I watched this, as part of my own Pyrrhus v Rome battles with Hail Caesar. I still haven't got it out on the table though so it's nice to see how these games play out.

    Units fighting to flank or rear hit one worse. Also you don't have to allocate attacks to the flanking unit, the rules say you must put "at least half" of your attacks to the front, and that if you are only fighting to the flank, you can only put a maximum of up to half your attacks to the flank.

      Enjoyed this tremendously. Beautiful terrain and miniatures with tactics. Always special playing with the kids. What about a mis-matched scenario, ie “hold until relieved”, rearguard action, etc. These often can tell some great stories. Victory conditions adjusted accordingly.

    Supports only get "surplus hits". They don't automatically "share" the hits.
    Note that supports don't get any combat bonuses/special rules. They are a straight hit on a four, except for shaken/disordered.
    Also fall back from shooting you fall back through any units to their rear. In melee, the units to the rear "give ground", i.e. they move out of the way.

    • @CheckYourLeaderTV
      @CheckYourLeaderTV  Год назад +1

      So all hits go on the fighting unit it reaches its 'stamina' limit and then hits are moved to supports?

    • @seleucusxxx7216
      @seleucusxxx7216 Год назад +2

      @@CheckYourLeaderTV Yes that's correct. Once any tests are resolved the hits over and above the stamina level of the fighting unit get shared evenly amongst any supports. If no supports then the excess hits simply disappear.

    Hi dear, I use to follow many if not all your battle reports. Matilda's Filed is one that I liked the most. That said I'd humbling suggest that the name of the third line of the Republican Roman Legion has to be pronunced in latin. TRIARII and HASTATI are quite well told because even if latin, letters match the english pronunciation as well. Not the case for PRINCIPES . Basically the latin word is the root of "Prince" (Principe in italian) where the correct pronunciation is the one for "ch" in english. This is a mere topping and does not dilute the value of your bright battle report in any way.

    • @CheckYourLeaderTV
      @CheckYourLeaderTV  Год назад

      I’ve been told multiple pronunciation so I just go with the ones I’ve heard uttered most often. I was never taught Latin so it’s all guess work and given it’s essentially a ‘dead’ language I simply hope no one takes offence 😁
