I have been to a talk given by the man responsible for the care of the Australian ice runway at the Davis Antarctic base. There is a massive amount of care that goes into ensuring that the runway is kept in a pristine state; for example, a single drop of oil can cause a hole 1.5 metres across and 0.5 of a metre deep to develop in 24 hours because of the extra heating from the sun that it attracts so all vehicles going to the runway have to be decontaminated before being allowed onto the airstrip precinct. Braking action on the ice runway is actually quite good and the Australian runway does have GPS approaches but they have to be recalibrated every so often as the runway is built on a glacier and it is moving.

Wow thats amazing, bravo to all of you! A perfect flight and so well presented too. I dont necessarily hope for many more, id like to see less pollution and the few remaining pure places on the earth left alone, but I love that we explore and know everything too. Explore without damaging. What an amazing scene, white, white and white, and also its the first time ive seen an airliner land normally with no airport, terminal, support or anything. Its like a new world, like HiFly landing on Mars. Historic flight and historic video too.
Too fabulous. I felt quite emotional over this and I'm neither a pilot nor worked on the ice.
