A very happy time for a tremendously happy band These memories for them are irreplaceable as well as for their fans. Gillan, pace, glover ,Lord, and blackmore.. the magic.!
Blackmore has played bass on "Long Live Rock 'n Roll" (so named in the song), as well as remasterd version of "Who Do We Think We Are" jamming with Paice and Lord. The track is called "First Day Jam" and plays the bass
I love Ian's scream in the beginning man Black Sabbath drove his voice into the ground in 84 he could barely scream but in 85 it seems it came back magically If only they had waited until 85 to record Perfect Strangers.
Amazing...newly I realize that at the end of this video (after 3:40)... Ritchie greets with a reverence and then there takes the thumb of the right hand (opened) with the left hand as a symbolic greeting as he did it to me on Sunday show 30/06/96 in Argentina! ...Little before it I could touch Ritchie and your guitar with my hands ! Eternal Glory My Teacher!
it makes me think so mush more of Richie Blackmore that he would get on bass to let the other dude shine a bit. It means he's not a total prick, rare in this business.
It's tough switching from playing bass through most of a show to playing guitar for a song. The strings and frets are so tiny. So Roger sounded pretty good. Couldn't see if Richie was using a pick.
@wilerson Thanks for the clarification. They sure look like they're having fun, which belies "Blackmores" (he is the guy in black?) often grumpy persona which I have read about in magazines. If this is Deep Purple Mk2 then I wish they could reform, but it is a shame that one of them is no longer with us. Timmy Bolin always in our hearts if not on bass in this video in Malmo in 1985.
In the show they did in Jacksonville Florida in March of that year they did a song where they switched but it wasn't Smoke on the Water. They did not play that at all. I was disappoint.
Ritchie on Bass?. how about renaming it to Ritchie on LSD? What the hell got into him I wonder. He never interacted with fans on this level that i know of.
@redtedinbed not in 85, Bolin died in 76. 85 was just after the MK2 return, with Ritchie Blackmore on the guitar and Roger Glover on the bass. In this video, Glover and Blackmore swapped their guitars just for fun.
@keithh1999 I thought Tommy Bolin is dead. If that is the case, how do you know him? Is it the same Tommy Bolin who appears in this video, or is a different Tommy Bolin? If it's the same one, can you get his autograph for me please?
as i know,Ritchie started on bass in his earliest bands, before DP,so he can play on bass. stranger thing is that he gave his guitar to Roger.it's like to give him his wife fro a night;):)
Nice to see Ritchie in a happy and playful mood... a very rare occasion indeed!
+Yelling Elk
Glover and Blackmore did it really well.
+Yelling Elk I was thinking the same thing...Dio told some stories about him going as far as spitting on his audience
+Yelling Elk It must've been a good audience, it seems to make all the difference.
Saw them do the same thing at Alpine Valley Wisconsin in 1987. Except Glover was playing a Steinberger at that show.
@@emeronlp Dio went too far bad mouthing.
unbelievable !! Never seen Roger playing Ritchie's famous Stratocaster ! Great footage !!
A very happy time for a tremendously happy band
These memories for them are irreplaceable as well as for their fans.
Gillan, pace, glover ,Lord, and blackmore.. the magic.!
the video should be named "Roger on guitar" :)
"Ritchie and Roger trade guitars" ;)
i was going to comment the exact same thing lol
MoonchildMindaugas2 "...trade instruments" :)
And the spotlight was on Roger. If he did the guitar solo too it would have been AWESOME-r!
Same!
Wow! Ritchie was in a "rare" good mood, that night.
I think he said, "\Rodge, if i play this bloody song again i'll set myself on fire!"
Blackmore has played bass on "Long Live Rock 'n Roll" (so named in the song), as well as remasterd version of "Who Do We Think We Are" jamming with Paice and Lord. The track is called "First Day Jam" and plays the bass
For a moment there I thought Jon was playing congas !
Roger Glover is a very talented musician.
Doug Batterham yeah they all were cant be bettered
2:04-2:13 and 2:44-2:46 incredible high screams by Gillan....really impressive, astonishing, wonderful Gillan!!!!!!!
This was the best reunion for them. So many surprises and house of blue light to
I love Ian's scream in the beginning man Black Sabbath drove his voice into the ground in 84 he could barely scream but in 85 it seems it came back magically If only they had waited until 85 to record Perfect Strangers.
I've never seen this before, go Roger!!
Fantastic!
Amazing !
Thank You so Much !
Cheers!
Good to see this video. Thank you.
...I was at the beginning of this tour in L. A. There was none of this banter. So glad I saw this upload, thank YOU for posting....
Mark II are by light years the best line up ever. No only in Purpleas life - but in ALL bands. !
Bo Finn Poulsen No way. Deep Purple MK3 is by far the best line up.
Maybe he just got so sick of playing that song. "Hey Roger, want to switch?"
Its all the same chords as theyr other songs, anyway. I'm sure iys a nice change for him
Didn't see THAT at the show in Columbia, MD that summer! But I was deaf for about a month afterwards...
Well ....That was a Pleasant Surprise!
Malmsteen's probably in the audience somewhere!!!!
I read about this years ago. Didnt know there was video!
Very cool. I've been looking for footage on the guitar/bass switch for a while now. Thanks
Cool, and Ritchie was smiling.
Masters of the art!
Now that's a switch.
REAL ARTISTS.THANX
Nobody is better than Blackmore!
les meilleurs !
Mr Weezler is right!!
Title should have been "Roger on guitar".

Thanks!
Blackmore all friendly with the crowd.
He seems to like Swedes!
Swedes would help him to beat Ian, don't you remember? 😉
Este vídeo es oro puro.
it makes me think so mush more of Richie Blackmore that he would get on bass to let the other dude shine a bit. It means he's not a total prick, rare in this business.
I think Roger on guitar today would give a more Purple sound than Morse.
And Bring in Glenn Hughes on Bass? xD
No Ritchie :-)
Bo Finn Poulsen Isn't the whole point that Ritchie is gone and not coming back? :P
Sadly yes
Probably not, did you see Richie´s new Rainbow thing? Not good.....
I was there!
MW I was there as well the weather was bad wasn't it. I was impressed by the size of the speaker stacks they looked the size of tower blocks
Where it was?
I was there 👍🏻
Jon was always the first to leave the stage, interestingly enough.
incredible high screams by Gillan!
Song starts in a very nice pleasant order, they should add that starting rythem to the beginning of "Smoke On The Water"
grande Glover!
Very Rare!!
Woah! Blackmore interacted whit the crowd?! Can't belive this! Usually he doesn't even notice them... What was in the air that night? 🤔😏
I like how he runs around at the end like a fairy
Yeahh!
\m/ muito bom!!!!
It's tough switching from playing bass through most of a show to playing guitar for a song. The strings and frets are so tiny. So Roger sounded pretty good. Couldn't see if Richie was using a pick.
I waited for Roger to play the guitar solo, surely he can give some...
@wilerson
Thanks for the clarification.
They sure look like they're having fun, which belies "Blackmores" (he is the guy in black?) often grumpy persona which I have read about in magazines.

Wooao. Cool!. TnK - U!
It's Trade Time!
Ritchie Blackmore on bass and Roger Glover on guitar -- funny!
💜👍
It's not about Blackmore, it's about Glover
Damn, Glover can make that Strat sing. Interesting seeing Blackmore on bass.
I was there the weather was bad got in a fight woke up in a hospital tent missed meat loaf but I didn't care we were all there for purple
Only assholes get in fights at a possible once in a lifetime event, you are a douce bag
Wow what a shock Roger is a beast..Blackmore needs to come back to DP
RIP....Tommy
Ritchie on bass is not a big deal..Roger on guitar is much interesting
Ahh he knew not to screw anything up. He played a pedal note, a couple of bar cords and got the guitars to the roadie. It was still awesome to see.
In the show they did in Jacksonville Florida in March of that year they did a song where they switched but it wasn't Smoke on the Water. They did not play that at all. I was disappoint.
Lmao did Ian even know they'd switched. Jeezus Christ on Crutches Gillan still had that wail even after screaming his head off in Sabbath.
In this video, Glover and Blackmore swapped their guitars just for fun.
wow, glover plays the guitar well
Pedazo de concierto. En el 85 estuve en el servicio militar. Vinieron a Barcelona???
great scream note at 2:07...
Ian was probably never happier to look to his left.
Rodger good on electro guitar)
Ritchie blackmore the BEST!!!!
... and Glover on the lead guitar 🎸
Look at how reluctant Glover is to part with the bass - Blackmore almost has to pull it off him!
So Blackmore did play a G&L in a gig.
He might have been in mk4, but he was also in Deep Purple after mk4 split up.
Born Again is areally good album, i think.
Gillans singings were always wonderfull.
Ritchie laughing and fooling around ... that happened once in 30 years ... probably he just got laid ... or he had his first joint ...
They did the same thing in Stockholm just a day or two from this. I was there, and to be honest, I thought it was a bit disappointing.
I thought it was disappointing too when they did it in Knebworth but not as disappointing as the atrocious weather.
@keithh1999
I thought Tommy Bolin is dead. If that is the case, how do you know him? Is it the same Tommy Bolin who appears in this video, or is a different Tommy Bolin?
If it's the same one, can you get his autograph for me please?
redtedinbed
Ritchie & Roger switched instruments the night of Knebworth 1985 as well. So RB isn’t always a miserable so & so! ;-)
I wonder if this is where Dream Theater & Sons of Apollo got the idea for switching instruments during their cover of Perfect Strangers.
Roger should have smashed it to splinters, that would have been awesome !!
HE WAS ON BASS FOR ONLY A FEW MINETS!
I thank you very much dirdami. Would you be interested to do a trade with me ! I really want this show.
Good for your daughter
@Nacho66 you mean any pro guitarist is an excellent bassist.
@Starpass Ritchie shakes his head like that all the time, I wouldn't see much into it.
as i know,Ritchie started on bass in his earliest bands, before DP,so he can play on bass. stranger thing is that he gave his guitar to Roger.it's like to give him his wife fro a night;):)
Danika The Wild Cat Cronqwist Not really, he has a room full of guitars, but only one wife. ;-)
@Purplesnake41
Nope. Meant what I said. Most guitarists THINK they're automatically good on bass by default.
Just not true.
Title should have been "Roger on guitar".
Blackmore como bajista es un buen guitarrista 😅
your point being...
The video should be called Roger Glover on guitar!🎸
