World Rugby Org has work to do but in my opinion they are leading the way in terms of head injury. Any time there is even a hint of head contact it's a yellow card. Many times it is completely unavoidable given the situation...so of course fans scream about this. But I think it's the direction we need to go. It needs to be enforced from a game level, and a post-concussion protocol level. The problem is, in lesser leagues (non-international play), there is less desire to keep the players healthy long term.

As a Bills fan, this is really bothering me. The visual signs should have been enough to at least err on the side of player protection. Yet, the whole system seems to have failed Tagovailoa, placing his career and life in jeopardy. Also, the fans are gas lit into believing their eyes are deceiving them. It's not right.

Thanks for brining this to light... I'm a health care worker and have to assess patients for a concussion which is called a mild TBI when they hit there head.. whether a fall, motor vehicle accident or any other hit to the head...at times I feel our health care system does not look at the big picture. Unfortunately we never know how that patients does when they leave the hospital. Its very concerning and frightening.

Thank you for sharing this video Emmanuel; American football reminds me of the Roman gladiators; people who were put into an arena in Rome to be eaten by lions for entertainment. The owners of these football teams do not care about their players; they care only about making money and keeping their fans entertained. Watching this sport from a distance is heartbreaking especially because it is usually my black brothers who are affected the most.

The difference being that in Rome, most of the Gladiators were slaves.
There's no way to avoid these kinds of injuries while keeping the integrity of the sport. What they can and should do is warn players. They should be able to make an informed decision on whether they want money, fame and glory or live a risk free life.
The same goes for every extreme sport. I confess I don't understand this crusade against the NFL when boxing, MMA, Formula 1 and Moto GP, for example, are way deadlier sports and people treat deaths as fatalities, a risk that comes with the sport. With the NFL it's as if the medic community is desperately trying to undermine the sport. I understand they're worried about these kids, but shouldn't they be worried about boxing, for example? An Olympic sport!

The entire sports community needs to hear this, understand this, & implement this! From the time children learn how to play a sport all the way up to the college & professional levels concussion prevention must be implemented! I can't tell you how many times I've seen the NHL & NFL throw their players back onto the game only to literally be carried out because the team was "that desperate" At that point you're only going to hurt the player further & that also teaches the kids who look up to these players that when your bell gets rung you just get up & go back into the game. Changes must be made! Create better helmets, inforce rules & regulations, & do better!

The NHL has one huge impediment to adopting a comprehensive concussion protocol....Gary Bettman. The man still won't acknowledge that CTE is a thing for the players, both current and retired. Remember Sidney Cosby sitting out almost a full year because of concussions back in 2011? He was the face of the NHL at the time yet Bettman still downplays the long term effects of head injuries. Stan Mikita had CTE, and it essentially led him into dementia. Bettman is the reason CTE won't be addressed by the NHL.

I suffered a fairly bad concussion in the mid-90's in 7th grade. Obviously the only thing people "knew" at the time was that you didn't let someone with a concussion fall asleep for 24 hours. But I suffered in so many small ways that no one (including myself) knew were related to my concussion for months afterwards. I was an excellent student with a crazy memory, so no one noticed any cognitive impairment, but I couldn't physically exert myself without getting sick. This physical trauma led to the psychological trauma of getting bullied by kids on my team for something I didn't understand. First just on the field but soon actually in school, which cascaded not only to me not playing football anymore, but to not playing any organized sports at any level. So I get pretty angry any time I see any league let someone back on the field after a concussion, and I get even more angry any time some know-nothing commentator speaks to that player's "toughness". That player is being pushed to greater harm by the culture of the sport and by irresponsible team "leaders" that are supposed to know and do better.

I agree that the protocol needs to be changed and I believe that is what's happening. Anyone who shows gross motor instability will be out now. Of course that will mean some people who actually did hurt their back momentarily, or some other issue like that, will be getting removed from games, because we can't believe the player if he indicates it's anything other than a concussion, which is what happened in this case with Tua.

I like the phrase ”brain trauma” - the lack of transparency and independence from the NFL is one of the biggest issue in my opinion.
Issue is - we weren’t on the field with Tua neither on Sunday nor Thursday, and most of us lack the knowledge to really understand if both injuries were unrelated (which it doesn’t look like) or if the current injury could have been avoided.
But who will trust guys most likely being paid by the NFL, being selected by the NFL and then potentially being fired by the NFL on this one?
Maybe it would be an idea to include this in CBA? The NFLPA will hire people to perform all brain trauma related issues - from diagnosing it on the field to clearing them - for all teams - and the NFL pays for it - but has no say in how it’s getting used.
Clearly, the concussion protocol today is not getting it done.

He stated that why Tua stumbled on Sunday, "Is clearly a back injury. I've done that myself." Curious as to why everyone wants to link what happened on Sunday to Thursday. Does noone understand that the hit on Thursday was vicious enough to cause the brain injury alone?

As a long time Dolphins Fan, Late hits/2 situations within days, all the impact of 2 big guys directly into the Helmet area, Tua was obviously wobbly vs Bills & another dirty playby the Bengals, spun Tua on his head. This combination of late hits, I doubt we see anybody but Teddy B for at least a month. To your main point, Tua's future is riding on these next few hits, how many more can he take? I think we need a combination of some stiffer fines, immediate ejections for late hits. & he's going to have to get rid of the ball sooner. We've seen other quarterbacks try to hold on to it too long, try to make plays & start to take beatings. I'm a big fan of Teddy B, so I'm not worried he can get the job done, he's going to have to sling that 🏈 out of there quickly too or we're going to be out of quarterbacks☕✌️

What frustrates me the idea that it was ever anything other than his head. Like any athlete at any level has hurt their ankle at some point. You don't walk fine and them just fall; no limp no hoping nothing. I've unfortunately have had a server neck and back sprain. The worst pain I've ever felt in my entire life. I didn't walk like I was drunk.
You saw Tuas head bounce back off the ground. You saw him wobble and collapse and need help off the field. At some point an organization needs to just tell Tua "no man your life is too important and you mean too much to this team to play right now " I find it hard to believe that a professional organization wouldn't expect a player to want to play despite the risks. You have young men who think they're invincible wanting to do best thing for the team you as an organization have to be the proverbial "adult" in the room.

Yes, yes and yes. I love football. But I don't want to see these guys leave the field on a stretcher because they have a concussion that impacts their lives often shortening them. As you said, I want them to protect the player rather then "clear' them from the quarterback to the lineman to the defense. I recall watching one came where Joe Montana was so badly hurt that they took him out the game, but left him on the bench. My husband and I refer to his obvious confusion as he looked around as him asking "what are all these people doing in my living room?" it was so obvious and bad. Thankfully for him, it doesn't seem to have made a long term impact. I thought the NFL had come much farther than that, especially in the last few years. Tragedies such as Jr. Seau don't have to happen. I've watched a lot less football in these few years because I am torn about supporting a larger organization that seems to care little for their players long-term. And things like this don't help. If someone is dazed, can't get up on the own power or with the help of others, no matter if it is head trauma or a back issue, they should be out for the game.

It becomes normalized for people to play with pain so you seem “weak” for complaining about possibly concerning things. When Aaron Rogers said he played while playing with Percocet in his system, it’s not to feel good, it’s literally for pain. Arian Foster is another one. Played on pain killers every game while his clavicle bone was broken for years. This game comes with the unfortunate cost of your health which is why I can’t appreciate it like I once did. My opinion is irrelevant to its popularity but I hope one day the health of these players is the main priority.

Giving them time to recover from a concussion, only for them to get into another head trauma inducing event, makes no sense to me.

I understand that Tua felt under pressure to return to play but, I'm not at all sure that it was coercive pressure from the organization. His career and contract pressured him to play. The season was on the line as well. But ultimately he is a grown man and if he lied to his doctor and the team about his injuries then that needs to be part of the discussion. We can't just say the player is supposed to lie to everyone and its up to the coaching staff to catch him. That road leads to more players playing hurt and having scary injuries. I do think that its possible that he wanted to sit out but I don't think that is likely.

I was so very upset about what happened to Tua. Someone has to be responsible for this. He should have been taking out last game. It really made me cringe last week seeing him wobbly after that play. The NFL needs to do better for the players.

I agree with him I just not a fan of his show he talks like every other word is emphasized sort of like Capt. Kirk which is ok in a sci fi show but not a talk show, irregardless he makes a lot of sense.

this is on tua period, stop blaming everyone else, seriously this 100 percent on the player, i dont want to hear they shoulda , someone shoulda, tua has already come from a career ending injury by the grace of god, that hip injury most people dont come back from. im excited as hell for him and the dolphins, i was loving his success after all the media hate who now love him,,,,,,,,,,, but he knew, in the quiet of the nite when god speaks loudest, he surely heard god say dont play son, but when the lights get bright we roll the dice, i truly hope he can play again, but this is on him, im not being mean, im being real

Every one knows the dolphins didn't follow protocol in the bills game but it will get covered up if they had did what they was suppose to do he wouldn't have got injured again with another concussion because he wouldn't have been playing don't feel bad but the NFL needs to do there job and punish the dolphins for getting there QB hurt worse

So when are people like Chris canty going to take some accountability. All he talks about how tua is fragile and needs to prove he is tough. They just talk about how he still has not proved him self because he’s fragile. Come on you and I both know if you are an athlete you are competitive. So when a young player like that hears he’s to fragile. Of course he’s gonna want to go out their and play hurt to prove you big time media guys wrong. The three seasons of belittling would definitely get to a young players head. Not saying it’s your fault, but I feel the big time media should take a small accountability.

I usually like your takes. And I agree with you that something needs to change with the NFLs concussion management. But the examples you are giving are not a good representation or good examples. As a nurse, I don’t agree.

Call me crazy but sometimes I see these "types" of injuries and think bro has been balling out after he been through it all injury prone or not... THESE TYPES OF INJURIES seem more like the Montreal Screw job although 'faked' but still real in a sense and are more like 'hits 4 hire' like its a job. Hitmen per say... All I'm saying is this, it was PREVENTABLE.

One: A concussion in an adult and/or teen athlete is the same as the experience a baby goes through in a Shaken Baby episode. That baby is delicate enough already and you are violently shaking that baby so MUCH that you dislodge his brain stem and kill him. That baby may not die right away in that instance BUT he is on his way to dying. The same should be said about concussions in sports. I am not an avid sports fan, but my heart was in my throat watching what was happening to Tua and him being carted off the field.
Personal opinion time: The dolphins lied about his condition on Sunday. They put their need to win above his health and now we have a potential NFL sandal (again!) and while he didn't die last night, just like a violently shaken baby, he's now on borrowed time. Who in the NFL is going to be there for him when his wife is struggling to feed him (and wipe his butt and change his adult diaper) and he has trouble recognizing his children? No one. they got what they wanted from him in 2022 and now it's 2035 and well, it sucks to be him. It is not for nothing that NFL stands for NOT FOR LONG. The new head coach is a lying piece of crap and he, alongside the ENTIRE Miami Dolphins organization, has lost my respect.

I am not a lawyer, so take this with a grain of salt. But it sure looks to me like someone should be charged with criminal negligence for allowing this to happen.
Oh--and the concussion test that asks "Who is the President" will be failed by far too many Republicans.

He was clearly concussed Sunday. Plenty of neutral medical experts have come out saying he was clearly concussed. That he was playing less than a week later is utterly criminal. McDaniel needs to be suspended. Miami needs to lose their 1st round draft picks. The owner should be fined.
