Judge Jay laying down the truth!
at what point are a VPN company trustable ?
@@davidfox6630 honestly it is nearly impossible to tell. One of the main things to look for is they don't keep records.
and one thing that is both a good flag and a bad flag is if they have a great it is fixed as soon as they hear about it. And disclosed as soon as the period of vulnerability has expired (ie. Cert expired/replaced).
Until you have something like that you have to take them at their word. Also being not based in the u.s. is also a major plus. In the US the government can request a wiretap and they can't tell you that you are being monitored.
Yay insufficient accountability and oversight!
So, as an expert who works in network & security, I want to make a few points here.
Even though this security key was compromised, those compromising would not have had ANY way to compromise your data. Just because a person gains the security key to your VPNs, the only VPNs you are able to connect to are those listed in the app. The remote hackers, had NO way to adding their servers to the list of authorized servers. Secondly, they had no way to spoof a connection server with DNS, as they do not have the certificates needed (nor a way to push a new server to the app) to allow this to happen.
The only way they would be able to get any information is if they were able to compromise a live server, run software on that server that actively monitors the traffic going to that server, and then decrypt the SSL traffic to see any data.
This is in no way a breech of your personal privacy, or data.
It is just a breech of a VPN key, that is randomized, and localized for every server.
Also, to clarify I am not defending NordVPN, nor am I an employee, or advocate in any way. I do not gain any monetary benefit for stating this information. I just feel the need to clarify these things from a technological perspective. Security is defense in depth, and they did not even get to the 1st layer.
The first rule of internet security: A hacker needs to get lucky once. The security provider needs to be lucky every time.
so true
If you are relying on luck you are doing it wrong. Instead companies should hire people who know what they are doing, follow best practices and have a plan in case something goes wrong after all in advance.

@Chris , you would be surprised what VPN’s log, they are usual required by governments as to not be taken to court. And if you believe IP is the only way to identify you I hate to break it to you but that hasn’t really been a reliable source for decades, IP of the average user is not likely to be static. Your computer information, spec and usage habits are all logged and can better identify you than any IP could. No VPN can block that.
Tor guard ?
@Chris Ain't nobody got time to steal data, you can instantly find out a facebook person where he/she live with all their personal information and their relative information by using certain free site. Their website also still says:
"We, NordVPN, confirm that we take full control of our infrastructure. It has never been compromised or suffered a data breach. We have not disclosed any private keys or any information of our users, and we have not been forced to modify our system to allow access or data leakage to a third party of any kind."
Incredible.
I'm not sure if I'm the only one, but the claims about Nordic ideals seem funny for a company based in Panama, Central America
Whats your point?
NordVPN is actually a really shitty company. I was using their services for some time a year ago and i was disappointed. Their servers are so bad, they can´t handle spikes in the daily hours with highest traffic, the service just kept disconnecting during that time of day (usually around 6-8 PM). Also support is non-existent, just a robot sending messages and no one really cares about any user issues.
They´re on top only because they spend a LOT of money for marketing purposes.

Use a burner laptop with a removable battery and when you're done store it in a RFID storage bag. Only use burner accounts and NEVER AT ANY TIME turn it on or use the accounts at your house. Drive to places with open WiFi and only places with no security cameras. If you happen to buy something at that place, only use cash and only visit twice and the first time is to check just for cameras. (THERE SHOULD BE ABSOLUTELY NO CAMERAS ANYWHERE. . . . VERY IMPORTANT.) Make sure to LEAVE YOUR PHONE AT HOME and drive in a plain white van with no fancy features. Keep it in your garage (or out of sight) when not in use and drive to an empty parking lot first to check for bugs, then go to the WiFi location for that day. Never use the same hotspot more than three times and never for more than 1 hour. When at home use a burner laptop just for home use and only to transfer over the files from the flash drive and check for malicious code before going to your main PC. Build a large RFID cage in your basement or a spare bedroom just for this use. If theirs any malicious software you don't wan't it connecting to the internet and giving away your location (sometimes it can connect and jump to your phone instead to wait for a better time to connect and give away your info so you gotta be extra careful). If you do find anything, incinerate and destroy ALL OF YOUR burners and get a new ones with all new accounts. Live alone and never have anyone over. If you need a burner phone for text messages (Some websites need to "verify your identity") get a burner phone and pay for it in cash. Use gift-cards if necessary to refill and only buy from small family-owned style stores with no security cameras.

"They don't keep logs"
And how would you _know_ that to be really true?
Well the hackers kept the log.
I guess a silver lining of the hack is that since the hacker leaked the keys, we can probably assume he would've also leaked the logs if they were there. So there's probably no logs...
Logs cost money to make and store so unless there was a law requiring them to or some profit to be made somehow from those logs then it's unlikely (especially given the industry they are in) to have logs. You are however correct that we don't really know what they did and didn't do/keep so at the end of the day it's a matter of do you trust them to tell you the truth about whether or not they kept logs and that trust is very much so the topic of discussion right now.
@@theeiszeitmann928 it was probably only the nsa anyway, precious metadata!

Not to mention a MiTM attack is exactly the kind of attack you would use with against a VPN user.
Script kiddies MITM
@@9Blu yup.... goodbye Nordvpn, Vikingvpn, and torguard. All 3 have been compromised.
In a broad sense you're correct, but in this specific case the truth is found between those quotes. This attack is not a broad spectrum attack, it really is a pin-point MITM attack that has such a complex setup with a terribly poor payoff that no hacker would ever go through the trouble. The biggest misunderstanding here is that the hacker did not intercept some "NordVPN Master Key" that allows them to decrypt all encrypted tunnel traffic. They didn't even steal the keys to any of NordVPNs servers. They stole an old expired TLS certificate that would allow them to make a cloned website of NordVPN[dot]com and NOT have the "This connection is unsecured" warning pop up. They would still have to somehow modify the DNS record of the individual target to repoint the NordVPN website request to their own hosted IP. Oh, and they'd also have to run a time spoof attack on the target to spoof their system time to before March 8th 2018 when the certificate expired. You might have seen my similar comments in a couple threads here, but the truth is you are buying into the forced narrative. I couldn't possibly stem the tide of thoughtless agreeance here, but I hope this will at least encourage you to not join in on the meritless bashing of a great company.

Love how my cybersecurity training said to watch this video as homework. Like yay it's Jay and not some dry explanation.
Ironically, I was shown an ad for a different VPN service when this video finished.
NordVPN: "We don't keep logs".
Also NordVPN: "No user activity logs were stolen".
Yep, noticed that as well. Only fools think that these companies don't keep logs of everything. They just don't sell the information.
As opposed to them saying that they were leaked despite not having logs? What do you want them to say?

The irony of a VPN company getting hacked is too funny
What's so ironic about it? VPN exists only to hide your identity, has nothing to do with security on their part. But ofcourse every internet service must have top security especially VPNs but still it's not ironic at all.
@@HotShame0 If you know what irony is, yes, it's ironic.
Irony is preparing specifically for something and having the opposite occur.
i think people use a VPN to hide their data and in the end, all of their data was exposed.
Maybe you're thinking of _Socratic_ irony.

Plus don't worry, VPNs are a bunch of hype and lies anyway, coming from an actual network engineer. They barely protect you.
Use antivirus, ad/tracker blocker extensions, try to use Firefox not Chrome, and use DuckDuckGo. Oh, and delete your Facebook. And boom. You're already 50x safer than if you were using a VPN, all for free.
It's more than knowing what you watch especially if you use public WiFi. They can access all the info on the device you are using, passwords, home addressees, email addressees etc. And I don't do social media either like Facebook and Twitter. Also one way or another everything can be hacked.

It’s too often that companies believe that the end user doesn’t have a right to know that the services they used may be compromised
Glad I never did a sponsor for them, they reached out to me a few months ago.

you dodged a bullet right there, not because of this incident, but because they are a employing various scams to get people to purchase their subscriptions.
Even their "limited time offers" are scams, which are easily debunked if you just clear the cookies you received from them and refresh the website.

you dont need a VPN to access internet. Your local ISP is enough.
Lionel Lim The reason people get VPNs is because your ISP spies on you
@@lionellim1101 I think we all know how the internet works. The added security is super nice, especially since I'm on a college campus 50% of the time (with a university network that tracks and logs every bit of data), a vpn is just a nicety that those of us with the funds take advantage of.
Clyde Cash It’s not only to protect yourself from your ISP watching what you do. It’s also an added layer of protection against people who might try to steal your personal information online. Not to mention the benefits of being able to get around region blocks on things like Netflix.
